We are running SBS 2000 with a raid-5 array. The array is
partitioned into "C", "E" and "F" drives and the vendor
(Dell) added its own partition for emergency boots. We
bought additional drives which exactly match the original
drives with the intention of expanding the "C" drive and
adding an additional drive. We understand that there is a
limit of 4 partitions and can live with that, however we
were given to believe that the disk management software
would allow expanding the partitions, but it doesn't.
Server Magic is one option, but $450 is too pricey for one-
time use and rebuilding the system is not an option. Can
you offer any other possibilities?

that'd be a PERC of some kind wouldn't it? I would expect it to support
online expansion of the array but this won't resize your C: (or any other
partition).

More interesting is the question(s). How big is C currently? and why do you
wish to increase it?

have you tried contacting Dell technical support and asking them your
question. I have found recently that Dell appears to be picking up the
quality of their tech support and responsiveness. I've been very pleased
lately.

Dell had us install their Open Manage software and it was Dell that
suggested Server Magic. A little research into Server Magic revealed that
since Symantec acquired PowerQuest, it has reconfigured Server Magic and
renamed it Volume Manager... and increased the price to over $700.

C is currently 25gb (as configured by Dell when we bought the server), and
includes the Exchange database. We have moved the Exchange log files to
another drive, but after installing Dell Open Manage, we are left with only
3.8 gb free space. As for why we want to expand the C drive, we are adding
additional client licenses and we need to upgrade Norton AV and add some
additional software such as the network version of QuickBooks.

25GB?

You need to be relocating Exchange and Shared folders to different
partitions. I have systems with SBS2003 that are runnning fine with an 8gb
C: drive -- but virtually all server apps (A/V, Exchange, Spam filters) are
installed on other partitions.

The C: drive remains fairly static.

at 25G your C: drive should be more than sufficient, I normally use ~10G for
SBS.

You suggest you have moved the Exchange logs, how about the store? KW
mentions moving the user shares, what else is using space on C?

You want to avoid, if you can and I think you can, using a utility to resize
the partition. The use of such utilities is not supported by MS.

and besides, if I was running your system I'd probably be looking for a tool
to reduce the size of C. After I moved the excess baggage off it, of course.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Since there is little except SBS2000 and the Exchange store on the C drive,
I went looking for the "excess baggage" and found that there are nearly 2
million files inside C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\vsi 1\BadMail. I would hazard
a guess that the problem is here, but I don't know why and don't know how to
clean it up. If I do clean it up, how would I prevent a repetition?

With regard to resizing partitions, if I am to move the Exchange store (I
don't know how yet), I need a place to move it to. I have 70gb empty disk to
allocate and no partitions available to put it in unless I resize. At this
point, rebuilding SBS 2000 is not a viable option for us.

Thanks again,
Gerry Kopelman

OHHH, and you wanna get a partner for that spare 70G HDD, run a mirror and
put everything on it.

OK, so you can move a lot of stuff off C: (and delete badmail), rebuilding
SBS is totally unnecessary at this point, unless we can't identify just why
those 2mil files exist.

Re: Adding disks to a Raid array by Gerry

Thanks for your time:

The 2mil files are in BadMail, which I can clean out using the link you
posted in your other message. Once done, it appears that SBS + Exchange
store will be about 10-12 gb.

We are running Raid-5 with the following partitions:
C=25gb
E=42gb
F=35gb
Dell=1gb

The 72gb of new space will net 68gb which I would like to add evenly to E
and F
