    - SBS2003 Hi All, i have installed SBS2003 RC1. Can someone tell me what limitation this has? Im only using it at home for test reasons so its not being used in a company environment. Also I have a Netgear DG814 as my ADSL going into NIC1 and have a normal 10/100Mbps Switch for my internal LAN. I also have a Linksys WRT54G wireless Broadband Router and wanted to use wireless networking for a: my ipaq and b: another PC in another room. How can i connect this to the SBS2003?     - ICW Fails 1. Set Up Router Connection to ISP screen produces the Warning! message: ISA will not be configured in this configuration. I'm using the local IP address 192.168.16.1 for the router (I can telnet to it just fine), and the DNS addresses Sprint gave me. 2. When ICW "completes" after providing an error message and showing the location of the log file, the Configuration status shows the Internet connection configured successfully, the ISA Server settings were configured successfully, but it was Unable to configure Microsoft Exchange Server settings.     - Help with Installation Crashing! I am trying to build a server using SBS 2000. I have an older (2000) micron server with Intel board and dual PIII 650's, 1 GB RAM, and a Promise IDE Raid array (3 drives in Raid 5). I finally got the system to work with the Raid card after flahing the system and Raid card Bios. I start the install Disk 1 and it goes all the way through installation to the final reboot. The system the displays starting windows, followed by preparing network settings and then I get either a) system hangs and will go no further or b) i get to log in and then instead of the desktop I get a blank screen with the cursor only (which I can move) Either way, I have no choice but to shut the system down/reset. When I do the sytem will not boot to the array and gives an error about no system present and then it starts the install process all over again. I read about an issue with dual processors hanging at this point, but the fix is to install the service pack, which I am finding difficult to do since I cannot get to the OS...     - SBS SetUp Completly new to SBS installation. I have purchased SBS2K which comes with 5 users licences what i want to know is this. I have named my server BizNet1. I have installed DHCP and DNS which is 192.168.16.2 as per Microsoft recommend in SBS installtion guide docs for internal network. Installed Exchange 4.5 & ISA but have a copy of Exchange2k which i intend to install and upgrade to. I have a second NIC on the server attached to a BB Modem. Therefore network looks like this. Internet > BB Modem > ISA Firewall > switch > Server > Pc's My Interent connection works fine for users and pc's. Just a couple of quick questions if i may. Number 1 - How do i setup the ISA firewall? I installed during installtion of SBS but i am not sure if i need to activate it in some way or does it automatically configure itself? (Sorry for my ignorance i have only ever used NAV Firewall before) Number 2 - How do i setup my SBS to accept e-mails into exchange and when a user logs onto a PC do they automatically get their e-mail without the need for passwords? Where and how do i setup e-mail user accounts does this come with the creation of a user and if so how will it pick up the user@ourcompanymail.com I do not want to use POP3 mail. I would rather use Exchange as i intend to setup OWA in the not to distant future. Number 3 - If i use a BB Modem to connect to the internet will i need to alter anything in order to get e-mails externally, i don't intend using a router.     - Bypass Exchange for Outgoing SMTP Email How can I bypass the Exchange Server for all outgoing email? I have a client running SBS 2000 and using Exchange 2000 for storing email and sharing public folders. The users all have Outlook 2000 or 2002 as an email client. If I set the smtp address on the server to user@mycompany.local, Exchange uses this address as the reply address, so replies are not received. If I set the smtp address to user@mycompany.com, any emails sent to internal users go directly to the mailbox and can't be retrieved from outside the office.     - SOT: web server in DMZ? This is slighly out of the SBS realm, I know, but there are some very sharp minds here.... I have a client (non-SBS) with three servers in their lan: DC, file, SQL. They are wanting to set up a web server for an IIS-based e-commerce app that will need to access the SQL and file servers. My question is, What is the best way to set this up without overkill? I'm thinking something like: internet | | dedicated isa box ---> web server in 192.168.x.x | | LAN 10.0.x.x other servers The IIS site on the web server will need to be remotely managed by an outside party on occasion, (possibly by manually enabling TS through the firewall only when req'd?) so I will need to really strip this box down before letting anyone access it. Can ISA be configured to allow SQL & virtual directory connections ONLY from the web server's ip, perhaps even ONLY from IIS? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks!     - Failed to open the Group Policy Object Note: I needed to remove the attached screen prints due to newsgroup posting restrictions. I am building a new SBS2K machine. I've finished the build and was attempting to establish user security policies. When attempting to run the Domain Security Policy program I got the error shown in pic1.jpg "Failed to open the Group Policy Object". When I closed the pop-up I saw pic2.jpg. Viewing the application event log, I see Event ID 1000 events as shown in pic3.jpg and pic4.jpg. The Event 1000 items are for Source Userenv and state "Windows cannot access the registry information at \\domain\sysvol\...\Machine\registry.pol. I am able to execute the Local Security Policy program, but those settings are not effective. Knowledgebase article KB294257 is not seem to apply, as step 3's note states that the restricted policy would be displayed with the notepad icon, yet I see it displayed with the folder icon. As indicated in step 7, I have verified that administrators have full rights, and even added the Domain Admins group with full rights, even though the user ID I am using domain\administrator is already a member of both the Administrator and Domain Admin groups.     - Strange SMTP Behavior Hello, Our Exchange Server suddenly stopped receiving emails from a particular email address. This address is not filtered in any way on our server. Additionally, I can actually see that server connecting to ours in the SMTP Current Sessions but no mail acutally gets delivered. I turned on logging to see if I could see what was happening and the results, for that domain, are below: 17:14:10 64.94.119.18 HELO - 250 17:14:10 64.94.119.18 HELO - 250 17:16:44 64.94.119.18 QUIT - 0 17:16:44 64.94.119.18 QUIT - 0 Additionally, any email we send to earthlink takes a long time to get there and when it does arrive it tends to be delivered anywhere from 3 - 12 times. I have ensured that Relaying is not enabled. I have also made sure that the SMTP is configured so that only the "list below" can relay and there is nothing in the list below and the checkbox to allow authenticated people to relay regarless of this is unchecked, i.e. if you are not on the list you cannot relay regardless of if you can authenticate. I am at a loss to resolve either of these problems. Hoping someone can help.     - ISA 2000 - role in domain? Hello, Some time ago, I asked on one of these MS newsgroups about ISA firewall box (2 NICs), what role this W2000 server should be to internal W2000 domain (considering that it should be as safe as possible from Internet attacks and any kind of instability), SO I WAS TOLD THAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MEMBER SERVER OF THE INTERNAL DOMAIN. It sounded logical since there is no local administration and no AD changeable. Now, during DCPROMO on W2000 Server SBS 2000 pack (whom ISA belongs to !!!!)     - Cannot merge mailbox into new SBS Hi, You have probably seen my postings...I have setup a new SBS 2000 box on an isolated network, and I successfully exmerged my mailbox out of the old SBS 2000 as a test.     - Running POP3 Accounts in Outlook XP I am running SBS 2000 with Exchange for email. Some of the users want to access POP3 accounts AS WELL AS their Exchange mail. I ran the ICW and allowed POP3 through the ISA, but on the desktop I'm getting errors immediately that Outlook can't access the mail server. Is there anything else that needs to be done to allow POP3 through Outlok directly alongside of Exchange (as opposed to using the POP3 connector)?     - Shared drive access lost I have a windows domain with SBS2000 as domain controller and an old NT Server (v4, sp6a) as a member server. WinXP clients regularly lose access to a shared drive on the NT Server. Win98 and Win2000-Pro clients do not lose access. WinXP clients, on access attempt, get popup window asking for login credentials. When they respond with username and password they receive message that "Login Unsuccessful, user name you typed is the same as the name you logged in with. That user name has already been tried. A domain controller cannot be found to verify that user name." After user logoff and logon on the XP-client, the user again has access to the shared drive on the NT Server, but some minutes later, the access is denied again. Any help appreciated.     - POP3 stopped downloading I have searched but can't find my problem. The mail is still at the ISP. I tried re-running ICW and get an error during the finalization (where the checkboxes get checked) I will post the actual error in a minute, but wanted to know if anyone had an idea. Had been running great for many months, never a virus, Trend C/S/M updates hourly, use HFNetChkLT manually to update each week, daily full backups, no other problems apparent, no errors in Event Viewer.     - Increasing volume size on Hardware RAID-1 array We have Win2K Server with two hard drives, 18GB SCSI, in a CPQ proliant with Smart Array and RAID-1. We need more space. Can I break the mirror by removing one drive, then insert a 72GB drive, let the system rebuild the array, then break the array again by removing the last 18GB drive and inserting a second 72GB?     - Scripts to Map Drives I am a bit confused with login scripts, etc in SBS 2000. I wanted to map a drive letter H on everyone's computers. I did a search for .bat files on the server and came up with two named SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat One is in \winnt\sysvol\sysvol one is in \"domain name"\scripts It seems like my net use command works in either one. Disk one is installing the Server 2000 element and I've reached the point where it's asking me if I want to use the default or custom network settings (this is just after I enter the Product Key).     - Desperate - Profile is corrupt I have a user whose profile is corrupt. No matter which PC he logs into the the problems persist, problem is a bit vague to go into any real depth. What i would like to know is can i simply delete his profile and create a new one? //I Believe i could be letting myself in for problems doing this. Problem user Has a username "JOHN". I have created a new profile named "Trial" to be sure that new profiles are ok on the system. What i really need to know is if the user logs in as trial can he still use his MS outlook as JOHN and if so how can i achieve this. I tried it under the WindowsXP > MYCopmuter > Control Panel > Mail. Unfortunately when i set the user John as the account to log into when logged in as trial i get a user does not have privellages to open this folder when i try to run Outlook. Basically what i want to know is how to recreate the user JOhn's profile in the easiest way possible allowing him to keep his john@ourmail.com username. Any advice most welcome.     - OWA not working... Outlook Web Access has stopped working on out SBS installation, I know it was working yesterday becuase I used it, since then I have installed SUS1.1 on the Domain Server, and applied the latest MS patches (there were 4, 2 criticals and 2 recommended - I'll post what they were when the server comes back up) Does anyone know why these would cause a problem. What I am seeing is as follows: Outlook Web Access starts up, it asks for a username and password and then loads everything, the tool bar, the outlook bar etc, but it just says 'loading' at the top of the screen.     - SUS and port 80 Does installing SUS open port 80 on the server? Until recently, I know that port 80 was closed on our SBS, from using online scans such as those at GRC.com. A couple of weeks ago I installed SUS and GRC.com now reports that port 80 is open. Are the two related, or is this just coincidence? I haven't installed any other software recently on the server or made configuration changes in ISA, so I cannot think of any other reasons for the change. If the change has been made by SUS, is it necessary to leave port 80 open, or is there something I can do to close port 80?     - POP3 mail, downloaded but not delivered. Hi. Recently posted this in the wrong place :-( I have SBS2000 and download via POP3, the mail is being cleared from the ISP, but is NOT being delivered internally. I have deleted the database and allowed the system to recreate it, added all users back to the POP3 connector etc, but I STILL cannot recieve the mail (although I guess that technically, I AM, just don't know where it is going to!).     - OT: Okidata ML320 on a print server Ok group, hopefully someone will have a solution for this: Working with a new client, and they're using an Okidata ML320 dot matrix printer for their invoices. We're installing new PCs, and they want to move the invoice printer to a different location. The invoice printer is currently shared on a Win2k workstation. We decided to attach the printer to a print server - all fine and dandy - except I cannot for the life of me get it to print using its built-in utility font. I re-attach it to the Win2k workstation, and it works great - put it on the print server and it prints at letter quality (which is approx 5 times slower than utility) and just way too slow for the client. I've tried a different brand print server, and the same thing happens. I've verified that all settings are identical whether its configured for the Win2k client or the print server.     - Spontaneous dialouts Our SBS server dials out within 1 minute of closing down the modem connection and remains open. This happens even though no workstations are connected and though there are no known programmes making this request. SMTP mail is set to dial up only on a request from the workstation.     - Backup Solution Needed I need a recommendation on a backup solution for SBS2K. I need to backup the Information Store and the users files on the server daily, to an external hard drive. The built in NT backup is very limited and cannot do what I need. What I need is basically for the backup software to do a full backup every night, where each night, each full backup is given a new file name. Once the external hard drive is full, it should start overwriting the oldest backup first. Is something like this possible?     - downgrade rights Hi there, I would like to know if I purchase SBS 2003, can I downgrade my server to SBS2000? My client is currently running NT4, Exchange5.5, SQL 7.0, and proxy2.0 (with latest service packs). They want to upgrade to the "latest" version, however they use an older sales program which will probably not be compatable with the latest version.     - Cannot use Additional Domain Controller Hi everyone! I have installed the Active Directory on a separate separate server which would act as the primary domain controller. I'm planning to hava a secondary domain controller in case my primary domain controller goes down I have a server that would be ready to use. However, if I try installing the additional domain controller, this error occurs: "This product option is not available with the small Business Server Edition" How may I be able to around this problem? I really need to have an additional domain controller where users can log on immediately and access their files in case the primary domain server goes down.     - Exchange/SMTP/ICW failure My SMTP outgoing post is not outgoing and I can't understand why. The Internet Connection Wizard falls over with an apparently meaningless error message. I hope someone out there can help me. I have SBS 2000 patched to SP1a. Until yesterday, both incoming and outgoing mail was moving. During the course of yesterday, I realised that no post was getting to the external addressees though post was coming in. The SMTP virtual server cues were showing empty but mail was not hanging up in users' outlook mail boxes.None of it has been delivered. I tried to check/reset the configuration using the Interconnect Connection Wizard. This rapidly completes the internet setup but falls over - after a long delay - when trying to configure Exchange Server. The error message says look in the icw.txt log. This is very long, but right at the end it says Error 0x80072030 returned from call to GetBOConnector(). The wizard then asks me to ignore this or abort. When I looked this error up in the MS KB, I found only article 280038 seemed to refer to this problem but this said that I could 'safely ignore' the error. There is no SMTP connector in my Exchange Server setup (and I can't remember if there used to be. I have tried manually creatijng and configuring a SMTP virtual server and, although it looked alright, I still can't test traffic out through the door. My boot drive (a 4 Gb partition) has only 300Mb left and I was wondering if some of my problems are caused by lack of disk space. I have tried reinstallying the SP1 patch. None of this works. Is this a known problem - and does anyone have any suggestions. How feasible is it to reinstall either Exchange or, if necessary, the whole SBS operation. What woujld I need to do to safeguard my data in this situation? Any help or pointers very gratefully received.     - laptop not dialling in properly I've got a new sbs2000 installation. I've got laptops that dial-in OK, but I have one laptop that will establish a dial-up connection but then can't see any of the network, including exchange server. I get a 6118 error message when I try to browse the network or use the NET VIEW command. This laptop was running w98 so I upgraded it to XP Pro and it still has the same problem.     - Autologon I will be away for 3 weeks with the system being unattended. We run a telephony app that must be running on the server at all times. I would like to setup the server to AutoLogon with the guest acc with this Telephony app in the startup group, this way if we have a power outage etc the server will rectify itself.     - Help DHCP Event ID: 1002 Errors Hello All, My client box (Win 2k svp 4) is returning dhcp errors with event id: 1002. In some cases, this will occur followed by a crashing of internet explorer. The exact error message as it appears in the event log is shown below.     - Intrusion detection Hi! I've been intruded! Sounds personal, but...I like my space to be my space. An IP address did a port scan, actually about 7 of them. I used the whois and found them, contacted the ISP who is supposedly doing an investigation. I've found this site, http://www.columbia.edu/acis/security/aprocedure.html, is it a good one to follow? The ISP told me they couldn't tell me anything, that I'd have to subpeona their records. Who wants to go through all that? I just want to know who it is and why they're doing it?     - Considering Upgrade Schedule Hello, We've been running SBS2000 on a single server for 2 1/2 years, and we're trying to figure out possible upgrade scenarios for the next two years. Being a nonprofit organization, we can get software at a good discount but we can only do so once every two years (not sure what Microsoft's reasoning was for that one). It has been suggested that network performance & reliability can be greatly improved by separating out Exchange onto its own dedicated server. Of course, doing so would mean moving from Small Business Server to a full Windows Server and Exchange Server. Performance has not really been much of an issue thus far. We are using about 27GB out of total capacity of 63GB. It's a single 933MHz processor, we're not using SQL Server. We are about 25 people and we don't plan on expanding over 30 in the next two years. Network speed is pretty quick, in terms of document retrieval. Sometimes Access database operations take a little time, but nothing too klunky. Would our users notice much of a difference if Exchange were separated onto its own server? What other benefits/issues might we encounter? Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated.     - Some upgrade questions and client-add questions I'm going to be upgrading a SBS 4.5 network in two phases soon; it's in two phases because of budgeting issues, among other things. To ease the workload on our present (and old) server, I've talked it over with a contractor that supplies and supports Great Plains financial software for us, and we're going to aquire an inexpensive single processor box to move the GP stuff to, probably just running on Win 2000 pro, as only two people on staff will ever be accessing it. I'm making the assumption here that, since it's not a geniune server OS, I'll have to add it as a client, and thus acquire some client licenses (as we're currently maxed). That isn't a problem, as I'd like to add a couple of people to the network anyway. As I understand it, there can be unlimited user accounts, but machines are limited to the number of licenses. While I've read that SBS 2000 CALs are backwards- compatible with SBS 4.5, does anyone yet know if SBS 2003 CALs will be? Also, while shopping for the CALs online, I've noticed that there are actually two versions of the SBS 2000 5 count CAL packs. They are: SBS 2000 CLT ADD ON-5U 3.5 V/UP $147.92 and SBS 2000 CLT ADDON 3.5-DMF 5PK $ 279.94 Murphy's Law says I'll probably need the later because it's more expensive, but can anyone tell me what the differnces are? The website these are quoted from is www.globalcomputer.com We may buy another server this year, and then replace SBS 4.5 itself next year. We're still considering whether or not we want to go with SBS 2003 or another solution, but if we do: Will there be an upgrade version for SBS 4.5, or will we have to buy the full version outright?     - Modems don't accept calls We have a SBS 2000 server with SP4 2 days ago the modems stopped answering calls from remote clients on dialup and faxes sent through shared fax service began failing. VPN clients are able to connect without problem. Modems test okay. There are no settings to keep dialups out. Error message is 678 modem did not respond. Any suggestions on what may have caused this?     - OWA Just recently my Small Business Server 2000 OWA has stopped working. The VPN connection is still working. Also tested the ping to the server which used to work now but doesn't, although you can see the packet attempt on the icon system tray with each ping. Can still ping out OK. Running SBS2k with several WinXP clients.

Trying to deploy "Firewall Client" from SBS Admin Console, but client never
seems to receive signal to install. All other machines have been
successfully installed, what could be wrong?

Any & all suggestions are appreciated.

Shaq,

The signal to check for and install client applications is a logon script
named SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat. This logon script is configured if you create
the new user using the SBS Add User Wizard. If you create the new user
directly through the Active Directory Users & Computers snap-in instead of
the SBS Add User Wizard, the logon script is not configured. To configure
the script manually, open the user account properties in AD Users &
Computers, select the Profile tab and enter SBS_LOGIN_SCRIPT.bat (full path
should not be required) into the "Logon script" box. Be sure there is a
copy of this batch file in the server's Netlogon share.
