Probably not the right forum, but someone might have a
clue...

Running ArcServe 2000 with agents for BAOF and Exchange on
SBS2000.

The pruning job and saved everyday backup job always shows
ACTIVE. I cannot stop the job or do anything. This has
caused the backups not to backup, as both the pruning and
backup jobs are locked.

How do I make both these jobs READY again from ACTIVE??

I search support.ca.com and found no KB articles.

This should be pretty easy to fix. This may look like a lot to do, but most
of it is just covering you in case you have to undo anything or if you
forget any settings.

1. Go to Arcserve Server Admin/ File/ Configuration/ Database. Note the
settings, particularly those that relate to pruning.

2. Go to Arcserve Manager, Job Status. Click the first job in the top
window. In the Job Detail window, r-click and print the details of the job.
Do the same for any other jobs (prune and backups). This way, you'll be
able to recreate the jobs with the same settings.

3. Stop all the Arcserve services.

4. Find your Arcserve directory (probably under program files/ computer
associates. Find the subdirectory named something.QSD (probably
00000001.QSD or similar). There should be twice as many files as there are
jobs in Job Status. Delete all the files in the qsd subdirectory to the
recycle bin. (These are the corrupted jobs you're trying to get rid of).

5. Restart the services.

6. Go back to server admin and verify the prune settings.

7. Go to Backup in the Arcserve Manager and recreate the backup job(s)
using your printouts of the old settings. Somewhere in the password,
schedule, or similar window (after you hit the run/schedule button), there's
a Save option - you can save this backup script to the my docs directory so
you won't have to recreate it from scratch next time.

8. Go back to Job Status. The backup job you just created should be there,
with all the appropriate settings and scheduling. The Prune job will
probably not be there, but it will be recreated at its scheduled time.
You'll want to verify the successful pruning and backup the following
morning. If the prune job was not recreated, go back to the settings in
server admin and select to submit the job now.

9. Go to support.ca.com and see if there are any patches for your version
of Arcserve - I think you may find one that relates to this specific issue.
There are a fair number of patches, so this might be a good opportunity to
get up to date on all of them.

In addition to the patches part: install first SP3, then SP4.

You probably don't have the disaster recovery option - it does not come with
the SBS version of Arcserve, and I think there may be a reason it won't work
on an SBS2k. If you're considering buying disaster recovery, you should
definitely check with CA on this before spending any money. (At least
request a 30-day trial from CA to make sure it works).

The new disaster recovery option in Arcserve 9 is supposed to be a lot
better. It creates a bootable CD-Rom that will recover your system in the
event of a total disaster. I had an older version in the SBS 4.5 days, and
thought it was more trouble than it was worth. You have to create a small
mountain of diskettes, then test them, and it has to be done every time you
make a hardware change, install an SP, etc. Given a well-functioning
hardware RAID, I thought it was better to risk having to reinstall the OS
and Arcserve to do a restore if necessary, than to go through all the work
of creating the DR disks. I might reconsider with the new version (when it
comes out for SBS) if it's as good as they say it is.
