VPN appliance and domain authentication.
How can a computer that connects to the office network through a firewall
VPN appliance (such as a sonicwall or watchgaurd device) be authenticated on
the domain to provide full access to network resources. The firewall has
its own authentication, but I don't believe that has anything to do with
domain authentication.
Thanks!

Upgrading to Small Business Server 2003
I am assisting a small business in upgrading from Windows 2000 to Small Business Server 2003. I was told we were going to have to format the drives and do a fresh install. I will have a complete tape backup to restore data, but will I be able to restore my Active Directory information? What else must I do to prepare my clients for this upgrade? The documentation I have found talks about migrating from 1 server to another, but we only have 1 server and do not have the $$ to purchase another just to upgrade the OS. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
There are 5 clients and about 30 user accounts. So it would not be a great deal if I had to recreate them all, but I was hoping their may be an easy way to restore my AD info into SBS 2003
I am also changing the server from a single drive to a raid 5 configuration, so reformatting the drives are not an issue, because I have to do this anyway in order to get RAID setup.
Thank You.

OWA Question and sending SMTP
Got a user who is trying to allow users to get into OWA to check email, but
we don't want these users to be able to send external email.
If I remove their SMTP address in Exchange, it still allows them to send
(but not receive) external email. I tried changing their email address from
their domain.com to domain.local - and then blocking the .local domain using
the SMTP forwarder... This works great, but when they are .local and not
.com, they can't log into OWA.
Any advice/suggestions?

CRITICAL ACTION NEEDED FOR SBSers <<<<<How to patch your Network>>>>>>
There is a security bulletin 04-007 that just came out. It's a nasty
one. So here's some steps you need to take NOW... SOON.
1. Reboot your server before patching. [okay I'll admit I don't always
do that, so I'll let you slide on that one]
2. Manually go into services and shut off Exchange as a precaution
[start, admin tools, services, anything with Microsoft Exchange, click STOP]
3. Using whatever tool of your choice [PREFERABLY www.shavlik.com
hfnetchkpro limited or MBSA which scans for all sorts of patches but in
this case with 04-007, Windows update will do just fine] scan for
patches and apply them.
4. REBOOT
5. Scan again to ensure that the patch has been applied.
We cannot stress enough how critical it is for all SBSers to reboot.
I've just finished up my SBS2000 network tonight and all is fine and as
soon as I post messages to various groups.... I'll be patching here at home.

MyDoom: Undelivered mail
Since the MyDoom.A virus has been in action I have been
receiving up to 250 undeliverable messages to my
postmaster every day! The emails are addressed to random
names which of course do not exist within the
organisation. Previously I only got about 10 undeliverable
per day.
Is there something I can do to stop this? Is it best to
send a NDR to the senders or should the email just be
dropped with no response?
I would appreciate any suggestions, tips or bad news.

MDB and stream files are on the D: drive and the OS,
application, Log files and Chk (system path location) are

move the logs to the D as well.
I noticed last nite that the logs have been filling up

Can you switch Terminal Services from application mode to Remote mode on SBS safely?
Wow! I just another inherited another SBS 2000 with some tricky
weirdness. The previous IT company did the following (I only need help
with the last):
1. Installed SBS on an old box with a three year old single hard
drive!
(owner of company said she would have bought ten if it woud have
helped)
2. Named the local domain exactly the same as their external website!
3. Disabled ISA so he could sell them a fancy firewall with a ton of
ports wide open!
4. Installed Terminal Services in application mode just for the fun of
it!
I wouldn't be surprised if this server has one ear and answered to
"Lucky." Sorry, I had to vent.
Anyway, has anyone heard of reverting TS back to remote mode? I would
like to offer this feature, and I can't install certain features of
Symantec SBS 8.1 AV because the server is in application mode. I
didn't know if this is terribly risky or not.

Outlook client on SBS 2003 server
I am wondering if it is safe to run an Outlook client on an SBS2003 server
if I implement dll/com redirection. Despite the warning when you start
Outlook, Q articles on MS web site seem to indicate that you simply need to
copy mapi32.dll to the same directory as outlook.exe and create a blank file
called outlook.exe.local. Any thoughts on this? If my rational is correct,
what about mapisvc.inf? Would a matching copy of that file need to reside in
the same directories as mapi32.dll?

Printing in Terminal Services & Group Policy
Win 2k TS and SBS 2k. 2 printers are directly on network.
4 other shared printers attached to various local
workstations. Everyone uses RDC to connect to TS but I am
having problems understanding printing from within a
Terminal Services session. None of the printers are
attached to the TS or SBS.
Do I need to install all the printers on the TS for users
to be able to use them ? or just the printer drivers ?
Do I need to use the Add Printer wizard, when each of the
users logs into a TS session in order for them to use a
particular printer ? or is there any way of making all of
the printers available to all users without having to go
thru the wizard for each users TS session ?
With regards using Group Policy on the SBS to lock down a
TS session, I know I must create an OU but would I
include all computers and users in this OU or just the TS
or just the users ? Possibly a misunderstanding of Group
Policy on my part.
Thanks in advance.

Some emails not reaching new user; other user cannot open one email
Hello,
Two odd things that are troubling me, that I don't know how to troubleshoot:
Small Business Server 2000, Exchange Service Pack 3
1) I set up a new user, User1. More than one person says that they sent
User1 an email but the user did not get it. Most mail does through. I
tracked a message that did not get through by its message ID, in the daily
log in the company.log directory. The log recorded that it got delivered,
but it never appeared in User1's mailbox.
I then set up another new account, User2, and I specify in Delivery Options
of User1 to forward all mail to User2.
A few days later, User2 is not receiving some emails. However, emails that
were sent to User1 but never received, finally get delivered to User2 (and
possibly User1 as well), a week later.
2) I noticed that I cannot open a specific email in my mailbox. It's over a
year old. I click on it and nothing happens. I try to open it via OWA,
and I get an HTTP 403 (Forbidden) You are not authorized to view this page.
I do have administrator rights.
There's nothing too unusual in the log files. Lots of Symantec Mail
Security stopping Novarg/MyDoom. Occasionally we get Warnings (not Errors)
that two objects in the directory have the same proxy.
This is scaring me, does anyone know what's up?
Many thanks,

Reboot and First Logon takes over 30 minutes
My SBS 2000 Server has developed an issue where by if I
reboot the server it takes about 20 minutes to get to the
point of displaying a log on screen and then takes about
15 minutes to actually work through to the desktop of the
logging on user. The user is using roaming profiles, but
the profile size is only about 1MB and is stored on the
server. This is far longer than it used to take a week or
so ago.
If I look through the event log the System log shows a
gap (lack of entries) for the 15 minutes or so whilst the
logon is being processed. The Application log however,
shows several Userenv errors with Event ID 1000 stating
that:
Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your
computer network. Return value (2102).
I have also had a problem were my machine was unable to
access the Internet (via our ADSL router) although it
could ping other machines on this side of the router and
the router IP address itself, it could not ping any
hostname or IP address on the far side of the router.
Once the server has finished logging on the user it
performs fairly normally. This was resolved by restarting
the server. Everything else I tried made no difference.
There have also been problems of Terminal Service clients
unable to connect today even though all seems well. Also
the Performance Logs and Alerts service and the SNMP
Service both fail to start. The Performance Logs and
Alerts service starts if you try to start it but then
when you refresh the service list it shows it as not
started again. No error message is seen. The SNMP Service
returns an error:
Could not start the SNMP Service service on Local
Computer. The service did not return an error. This could
be an internal Windows error an internal service error.
If the problem persists, contact your system
administrator.
Sorry if this is a lot of information to take in and
consider but it has all started happening in the last two
days and so would suggest that to some degree it may all
be related.
Thank you in advance for any help, comments or
suggestions you may be able to make.

VPN configuration
Hi again,
I've just read & worked through the excellent
post from Jeff. If anyone else has, i'd appreciate some
help! The RRAS has been set up properly with a static
pool on a different Subnet from the LAN DHCP clients. It
doesn't matter that the Remote Client can browse the
Internet - just Network shares are ok! Now when the
remote client VPN's they get authenticated & connected
but can't see anything at all. Using the Route Print
shows that the VPN client routes to the Static Pool I
configured through the RRAS. The Server and any clients
on the LAN do respond to a ping. No need to enter WINS
address (Win XP Pro clien) & Servers IP address is
entered as DNS Server. Any suggestions?
Cheers & Thanks

remote mail recipients
We have a sbs2000 server, and our mail is hosted by our ISP outside our
office. I am running exchange server for users to share outlook etc, and
ISA for internet connections.
Our local domain is wskfarch.local and our internet domain is wskfarch.com.
When the client computers check e-mail they check the pop server my ISP
hosts. They also check an exchange account here locally for local mail.
When they send e-mail to xxxx@wskfarch.com , the exchange server
automatically routes it the the exchange mailbox instead of our ISP's
mailbox. This is good for all but the 2 people that travel. Also when
someone sends an 'everyone' email to the WSKFARCH group in 'global contacts'
the traveling computers can't get it, because it resides locally.
Is there a way to re-direct the global address to actually send mail out
instead of keeping it local on the exchange server? Or, is there a way to
autoforward in exchange?
I have looked in the help and read on other forums, but haven't found the
answer yet.
Thanks.

fine. This can happen at any time during the day, even if other people can
browse the net with no problems, and it seems to be just these 2-3 users. if
they close ie and re open it the same things happen.
The settings for all users are identical, using isa as a proxy etc.

Firewall
Sorry for such a stupid question but here goes anyway.
I thought the point of having the firewall client
installed on pc's connected to the SBS with ISA was as
follows.
1 - So that any rules etc configured in ISA would be

2 -I also thought that if they disabled the firewall

Is this by default using VPN?
Working on a Windows 2003 Server and don't know what I am doing *yet*.
Trying to figure out whether VPN is configured and being used.
RAS is installed, but the IP is set to DHCP, and there is *not* a DHCP
server on the network. I also used RDWC to access the server and did
not see an active connection in the RAS settings. So I must conclude
that when the enduser uses RDWC via the web browser this is not a VPN
connection and I assume this is not secure?

Helpful links give errors on SBS Console
Hi,
I have found a similar post to this from back in January but the
outcome was not posted. I have an SBS 2000 Server (recently installed)
and I'm having problems with the HMTL component of the SBS Console,
specifically in the Backoffice Manager section where the Helpful Links
are listed down the right hand side of the counter page. None of the
links work (they give errors about files not being found) and the
image at the bottom is missing.
I've followed technet articles to reinstall the console and to
manually replace the console but they have made no difference. I've
tried the server with or without SP1a for SBS, still not luck.
Does anyone have the solution to this?
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, the error still occurs after the upgrade.
Just in case it's relevant, when I started there were 15 CALs and 15 =

Question 1: What is causing this problem?

there anything more that needs to be done other than just running the =
Network Identification Wizard?
Thanks in advance,

Login Script hangs
Have just installed SBS2000 and new clients running XP pro. All network connections and resources are fine, but each clients sbs_login_script.bat (which I have not edited at all) seems to hang and has to be closed manually. Why??
\\EASTERN-MAIL\Clients\Setup\SBSCLNT.exe /s EASTERN-MAI
Is this something to do with remote installion services??
Note that netware services are also running on each client for simultaneous authentication on our Novell server - this script run without any problems - though only after the SBS login script has been manually closed. Tag: Accounts in Server Admin automatically disabled... Tag: 151087

No, you shouldn't have to mess with those accounts at all.

I guess it has been that way all along and I never noticed it.
I was onsite with another SBS2K client today and noticed the same thing.
STRANGE!!! Hello Microsoft, what is up with that? Anyone home?
