I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to pull mail in from our SBS 2000 Exchange
server. I created a new account in Outlook Express for POP3 and use our
external IP numbers for the POP3 & SMTP servers. When I try to access it I
get the following message:

The server responded with an error. Account: 'XX.XXX.XX.XXX', Server:
'XX.XXX.XX.XXX', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy
Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

I have a port open on the Watchguard firewall for POP3 mail. I'm stumped, I
can reach the server via POP3 internally using the servers internal IP
numbers. What am I missing? TIA!

This used to work quite well, but I think it stopped working as a result of
a security patch some time ago. I gave up and remote users now use Outlook
Web Access or VPN. OWA itself is restricted if you're using urlscan; some
emails will just appear as blank if the subjects contain disallowed
characters. OWA also only works properly with Internet Explorer: if you
prefer Firefox or Mozilla some of the controls are missing.

It was the firewall. Even though it was open it didn't let me in to the POP3
service until I set up a NAT connection to the Exchange server. Everything
appears to be working now. Thanks!
