    - Delayed mail I am having a problem with mail sending in SBS2K. I send mail to India and Singapore and I don't get the delivered reciept for over a WEEK. This is also when the customer recieves the email. I sent 3 emails between 2/15/05 and 2/22/05 and all 3 were actually delivered on the same day, 3/1/05. It appears that all mail going out of the US is several days late. It does not appear to happen with email in the US. Where can I check to see if they left my exchange server on time?     - Server for MS Access DB I already asked this question of Dell Support, but haven't really gotten a response. Although much of the question is hardware related, I imagine those here would be able to help me at least with the software portion of my question. I couldn't find a NG for MS Server 2k3... The following information is all being asked in reference to a MS Access Database that will be run in-house only. Thanks for any help. I work for a relatively small business, and we are setting up a server specifically for the purpose of storing and protecting our main company information database. This is to be accessible only within the office (so no remote management needed), and I had a couple of questions, as I'm relatively new to the world of server hardware and software. We will have 1-25 (probably no more than 10 at most times) accessing the database via a fronted placed on each user's system. What sort of processing power will it take to run this? 1GB Ram? Less? More? Second, we will be purchasing MS Server 2k3 to run this. Are there any specific advantages/disadvantages to using MS SB Server vs. MS Server? I've noticed that MS Server Standard is more expensive then MS SB Server, but that the additional CALs for SB Server are much more expensive. Finally, I would like to implement a RAID solution, as I understand that means we generate a 'mirror' of the data for both system stability and backup reasons. However, I don't know what sort of 'controller' I need. The system I was looking at here at Dell didn't offer a controller that was compatible, so I had to choose "No Primary Controller". Is that OK?     - Different printer settings for different users I have a client who wants to track who is printing to their networked printers. They have seperate ids for the print driver to identify them but they don't want the users messing with the print driver all the time and they have to clear it out when they're done. Is there a way to set-up usres with specific printing preferences so that if the user logs into XP or 98 boxes the printer preferences are set from the server?     - Really naive licensing question which I haven't researched yet (hows that for being honest up front!) I've got an SBS-2000 installation which is not presently using the Sql server portion. We've had a proposal from a vendor to move an app from a dedicated Unix server to Windows, and the Windows piece runs on SQL Server. So, their proposal includes SQL Server @ $666, and 6 Sql Server User cals @$146 each. Since I've already got Sql Server, how much of this can I save? Do I need the cals? We've got either 15 or 20 SBS cals, as I recall--the sub-operation that will use this software is probably 6 users max, which is why the spec. Pointers about where to read to understand limitations of Sql licensing welcome. As I recall from previous research, I'm not allowed to use the SBS SQL Server as a backing to a Web site.     - New database user Hi, Recently, I've added a new user to our SBS 2000 domain. Then added this user to our database using the enterprise manager, so she can use it. When she tries to open the database, the following error message appears: You don't have access rights to the database.     - OT: disk speed Hi, We are looking to add a new server to our domain. It will primarily be used for storage. I am looking at getting a RAID 1 controller with 2 250GB drives. What is the main difference between SATA and SCSI drives. I know the SATA doesn't spin as fast but is it that noticable? The cost difference is pretty large. I can save over 1k by going with SATA. I originally was thinking about getting a storage server (storage server 2003 OS, can't run applications) but down the line I may need to move sqlServer to this new server (not a ton of people hitting it, just ~10 developers. I know I will need to purchase a seperage copy of sqlServer). Our SBServer is a SCSI drive so I can't really compare anything. If the server is primarily storage, do you think a SATA drive would be sufficient?     - Total rebuild of SBS2000... I have an SBS 2000 server in bad shape. I am the 4th generation admin on it and I really don't think my predecessors had a clue. I have decided it's time to rebuild it. What I would like to know is how do I preserve the user accounts, shared files, exchange mail and most importantly the Active Directory data? I know I can backup system state data but won't that possibly include messed up Active Directory states/settings? I think I can just do a backup of exchange and import it in to the new server right?     - I can't remember OK. I think that the brain bucket has a huge hole in it. Can anyone tell me why I am not able to connect Outlook 2000 on a WIndows 98 system to my Exchange server.     - adding another server. Cals question Hi, We are running sbs2000 and are looking to add another server to our domain (win 2003). It will mostly be used for storage purposes etc. We currently have 15 cals for sbs. Is it correct that the server itself takes up one cal, but we don't need to purchase extra cals for each user accessing the new server. Its cals are rolled into the sbs2000 cals. So technically if we have 14 users, 14 cals are taken up by the users and 1 cal is taken by the new server. This means we don't have to buy any cals associated with the win2003 server.     - exchange backup getting very large Hi, We are running SBS2000 and are backing up exchange via the NTBackup. I have noticed our backup file is getting very large (> 2GB). We only have 13 users and looking at the mail box size for each user, the total only sums to around 1GB Max. Why is the backup so much larger? Is there any way you can reduce it's size?     - SBS3000 upgrade stalled due to underscore in netbios domain name It seems what should have been a straightforward upgrade from SBS2000 to SBS2003 is now a nightmare, because of a little underscore in the domain netbios name (VAN_INT). Microsoft allowed this in SBS2000 but is not allowing it in SBS2003 to conform to RFC. Apparently this is a showstopper for the upgrade and next step is to do a fresh install of SBS2003. (which means building AD and Exchange Server again). Does anyone know of a way to get past this (or rename the domain netbios name in SBS 2000)?     - cannot choose option for OWA When I re-run the ICW, the tick boxes to allow internet users access to my "web based mail server" are greyed out. Consequently users cannot use OWA remotely.     - PC diagnostics utitliy Howdy. I need to get a diagnostics utility. I think that when I worked in a retail repair shop we used one called PC Check (not sure). Is there a decent one out there that is not too pricey that anyone has had luck with? I have a system that has been acting quirky for a while now.     - Default Exchange MDBDATA Directory permissions for SBS2K Hi hopefully one of you kind chaps(eses) can help me out a little bit here. Over the last weekend I had to replace a couple of disks in our sbs2k server in favour of a new hardware raid array. 4 disks in a raid5 config. Now it seems I ballsed up the moving of the exhchange database directories from the old disks to the new. Could someone kindly post for me the default security permissions of the mdbdata directory? the problem I have is that people are getting their e-mails etc, but no-one can add anything to the public folders. The Incoming Fax subject header has the following description: "Fax server ABC received a new fax from +662 872 5002" I was wondering if there was any way to change the description of the subject header to read something like: "Fax server ABC received a new fax from DEF Company Limited", where the company name is substituted through recognition of the fax number?     - VPN needs static IP I have a VPN establsihed and works fine. However, it is either giving the local address by a static pool or DHCP. I need the ability to assingn a local IP to a specific user. I see the option in AD Users and computer, but it is grayed out.     - Exchange 2000 all going to badmail... We have a Windows 2000 Small Business Server that *was* runningInternet Security and Acceleration Server and getting email justfine. After taking ISA out of the picture all incoming email isgoing directly to BadMail and we cannot figure out why. Here's what we did: 1. We unplugged and disabled the WAN adapter. (Internet connection now coming from Enterprise Firewall not ISA.) 2. We ran the Internet Connection Wizard and changed it from a broadband connection to router. We were told that ISA would not be used in this configuration and that made us very happy. 3. It then made the changes to Exchange and ISA and the connection. 4. Next I disabled Microsoft Firewall and the ISA related services. 5. We then changed all the clients on the LAN and things were good as far as getting to the internet but nobody was getting mail. 6. We run ORF and knew it was getting to the server but Message Tracking said it was going to BadMail. 7. At this point we did the exact same thing on the test server we have at another location. Well almost exact. I left the services alone. Everything worked perfectly. 8. So we enabled Microsoft Firewall and the ISA services and still no email. 9. We re-ran the Internet Connection Wizard and still nothing. Presently that's where we are at. We have email being delivered but Message Tracking says it's going right to BadMail.     - Physically moving SBS2000 to newer motherboard setup (drives and nics) I know this may sound like a stupid question, but before I attempted it, I thought I would find out what the majority thought. I'm currently running an sbs2000 machine on an old PIII motherboard. The scsi drives it resides on are fairly new and would not need to be replaced. What I would like to do, is lift the drives which contain all the sbs information and put them into a new machine (motherboard and cpu's). Is it possible to just take the existing hard drives and put them in the mix on the new motherboard without losing the already provisioned 2 nic setup? Will the drives operate as normal on the new motherboard setup? I'm guessing not, but this would be nice if I could just take the drives out and install them in the new box and have it just fire right up.     - Spam Our outgoing email suddely stopped a couple of days ago. After a lot of head scratching I discovered 6000 emails in the outbound smtp queue, mostly from someone I had never heard of. After deleating this lot it left 19 genuine emails which have now gone out. Is exchange bright enough to spot that it was full of spam and stopped sending? It's SBS 2003.     - Trouble Removing Client Computers After disconnecting a PC from our network for rebuilding I'm having trouble removing that PC from inside the Administrator Console under / Small Business Server / Shares (Local) / Computers. The computer name is listed but when I select it, right click and select 'Remove Client Computer' I get an error that basically says 'That computer does not exist on the network'.     - Problem with Backup Hello, SBS2K. Back when I originally set up an SBS, I wrote a script that ran the imbedded MS backup program to back up the entire system each evening. The script then emails me the log file so I can see how the backup went. After working without a problem for almost 3 years, I got the following message in the log from last night's run: Error: You do not have permission to access portions of System State\Registry\software. Please see the owner or administrator to get permission. Warning: Unable to open the file \Registry\software - skipped. Backup completed on 2/22/2005 at 2:19 AM. Directories: 335 Files: 2401 Skipped: 1 Bytes: 510,611,337 Time: 10 minutes and 34 seconds Of course, the part of the message I am asking about is the first three lines about the permission problem. I wrote the script to run under the Administrator account. What could be the problem with this system state area of the backup. I cant think of anything I had done in the past few days that would effect the backup. Is there anything I can do to find out what's wrong? I appreciate the help.     - FYI - MUP.SYS Howdy. This is not a question but an informative post in the hopes that it helps someone else in the future. My parent's computer was heavily infested with spyware including the TIBS dialer. They had been complaining that the system had not been working well for a while so I tried to clean it. Ended up just backing up their data and starting over from scratch. FDISKed and Formatted with a 98 boot disk first and then reloaded their XP Pro with NTFS file system. This is a system that I built them with AMD Processor and Gigabyte MB. It worked great until I took it to their house and started installing their new USB2 card and printer. The system started hanging. Tried to reboot and it would not go past the MUP.SYS file. I googled this and found as many answers as people having this problem. I did the normal troubleshooting (removing pieces a bit at a time, etc.). I noticed that many of the fixes on google had to do with the system BIOS. I Unplugged the computer and removed the BIOS battery for 45 seconds. Replaced the battery. Accepted the default BIOS settings and everything is working fine now. I don't know if this will help anyone else but just wanted to put it out there. Thanks for your time and all of the great help that I have received here.     - event ID 1002, 9004, 1005 I am having trouble getting my exchange to start up. The last thing I rember doing prior to it not working was a windows update. These 3 errors come up every time the server is started and no one can send or receive email. From researching the error, I have removed and reinstalled both IIS and Exchange. During the exchange reinstall an error came up saying to consult Q266418 at support.microsoft.com. From this I have concluded that one of the update put Outlook Express on my server. I cannot find a way to remove or unistall. It does not show up under the programs add/remove from the control panel. Here are the errors from my event log: Metabase Update agent failed to start. If the (2) domain names are the same...i.e. abc.com and abc.com then you
must create a WWW ptr DNS record in DNS that points to the public IP address
of the server hosting the public website.
