I am following the recommendation of MSDN Article 266668 which says:

Perform an in-place upgrade:
a. Run Winnt32.exe from the \I386 directory on the Windows 2000
installation CD-ROM.
b. When the Windows 2000 Setup screen appears, click Upgrade to Windows
2000.
c. Allow installation to complete.

The problem is that the install dialog will not accept the CD key that is on
the back of the CD folder for the SBS 2000 CD. Any suggestions as to what I
should I do?

I assume an inplace upgrade of Windows 2000. At least that is what the
dialog heading said when it came up. I followed the instructions, as shown
below, and clicked the radio button next to "Upgrade to Windows 2000" and
clicked next. That is when it asked for the CD key. I entered the CD key on
the back of the CD holder but the program rejected it.

you don't assume, you _know_. Is the system you are upgrading currently
running Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition? or is it running some other
OS?

If it is running Windows 2000 Server Standard Edition, is it a DC? does it
hold the FSMO roles? is it a global catalog?

I have _no idea_ why you are referring to 266668.

If the system you wish to upgrade to SBS is Windows 2000 Server Standard
Edition in a DC role, and holds all the FSMO roles, and is a Global Catalog
it should be as simple as autoplaying the CD.

I am a software consultant who works with Microsoft/Solomon. I installed the
Microsoft Business Solutions/FRx 6.7 on this SBS 2000 and the installation
blew up and corrupted the registry. The corrupton and a fix is described in
MSDN Article 266668. I showed verbatim the instructions for one of the steps
in the fix in my first post. There is no Windows 2000 CD at this site but
there is a SBS 2000 CD and it has a I386 folder. So I followed the
instructions and, using Windows Explorer, dbl-clicked on Winnt32.exe from the
\I386 directory on the SBS 2000 installation CD-ROM. A dialog came up and I
chose Upgrade to Windows 2000, as per the instructions. Then it asked for
the CD key. I typed in the CD key shown on the yellow Microsoft sticker back
of the CD holder. The dialog refused to accept that CD key with the message,
"The CD key which you entered is invalid".

Yes, this server is a domain controller. I don't know what you mean by FSMO
roles, or Global Catalog. I am just doing the fix according to the
instructions. And it will not work because the CD key is rejected.

what happens if you autoplay the CD (or run cd:\setup)?

BTW I probably wouldn't bother. I'd be more likely to move any data to a
holding point and perform a clean install. Have you installed SBS before? If
not, please do yourself and your client a huge favour, step away from the
problem, grab a spare box, and perform a couple of test installs of SBS. We
normally suggest people get it right by the third install.

If the server is the only DC in the domain we can assume it has all FSMO
roles. Search support.microsoft.com for 'FSMO roles' for more info.
