I have installed a new SBS 2000 as follows:

Internal NIC 10.0.x.x
External NIC 192.168.x.2

Netgear ADSL/Router DG814 192.168.x.1 with Fixed IP address from ISP

Have added Port Forwarding on the Router for Port 25 to the External IP on
the NIC (should this be the internal Nic with a Static Route pointing to the
external nic??)

Have configured SBS using ICW for a router with 2 nic's

Internet browsing great
Sending Emails great

Cannot Telnet to port 25 on the fixed IP address on the gateway (ISP
address)- response is that no response has been received.

NAT is enabled on the Router. Do I need to use the DMZ? Surely this reduces
the Firewall of the Router.

All the settings in the SMTP and Filters in ISA appear to be fine (as per
the ICW configuration requested). Which IP addresse should be selected in
the SMTP connector - internal or external? Would this make a difference?

Any other pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Andrew

I think I read somewhere that the only difference between the 'router' and
'broadband' options was that one of them set the default time period for
accessing the Internet to Mon-Fri 8-5, while the other was essentially 7x24.
I believe that was a "Jeff" posting a month or so ago.

Forgot to add I did actually try the Broadband option.

I have been testing further off site using another DG814 to a win98 box with
ZoneAlarm.

Going to grc.com.au with Port Forwarding enabled port 25 is Stealth/23 is
Stealth, turning off Zone Alarm port 25 is Stealth/23 is Closed, adding a
DMZ Server port 25 is Stealth/23 is Closed.

Would seem to indicate that the Port Forwarding is working on 23 but not 25.
I have the latest update from Netgear.

Also, if you select broadband rather than router then [from memory] POP3
connector won't download at weekends...

Hello Andrew,

If you are still unable to telnet to your public IP address and get your
Exchange 2000 email banner, there are several good troubleshooting steps to
help narrow down what might be causing it.

First, open a command prompt on the server and see if you can telnet to
192.168.x.2 on port 25. (telnet 192.168.x.2 25)
If you do not get the Exchange email banner, then your virtual server is
most likely not listening on port 25, or another application is taking that
port. If you do get the Exchange banner, then the odds are it is something
with forwarding SMTP traffic from your router to the server.

In the Exchange System Manger, verify that your Default SMTP virtual server
is listening on "all unassigned" instead of just a single IP address. This
way when the virtual server starts up, it will open port 25 to all network
interfaces/IP address it finds. If this was not set to all assigned, make
the change and then Stop and Start the virtual server.

If this does not help let us know and we'll go from there.
