    - Kerberos & DNS problem Hi you all, I have 2 little problems on my Win2000SBS network whith mixed XP and a few 2K workstations, on some XP workstations (not all) I have a problem that when starting Windows the user session is not connecting whith the server to synchronise it's offline folders, and also does not showing data on the shared and mapped network server drives, when I logon as another user on these workstations everything works fine ??? I already set the timings on workstations and servers even but no solution.     - SBS 2003 - Manage Users Hi, I'm new to SBS 2003 and struggling with parts of it. I've just lost most of the Manage Users functionality which seems to be because the user templates have all disappeared! I can't create manage users into groups and I had to recover (last known good) after dodgy reboots but it didn;t go back far enough to completely fix the problem. Can anyone suggest a way to repair this? Things started to go wrong when I tried to use NTFS permissions to prevent unauthorized access to a web subfolder.     - Roaming Profiles I am working for a client installing a new Windows Small Business Server 2003, and I am having some difficulty. My client has a Dell server, a Dell 16 port switch, and four client PCs each running Windows XP, as well as a Netgear ADSL modem/router/WAP device through which a connection is made to the internet. I have installed SBS on the server, and have started the configuration process. At the moment I am trying to get roaming profiles working. I believe that I have installed and configured everything correctly to this point. I have created four users on the server, as well as the four client PCs on the server. I have installed Windows XP on one of the client PCs. I have set the users up to have roaming profiles - on the server, I have set a path for the profiles to use. I believe that I have set the correct share and NTFS permissions for the directory where profiles are to be stored. When I attempt to logon to the client PC as one of the created users, I get two error messages relating to being unable to access the roaming profile on the server, and being unable to create a local profile on the client PC. I am, however, able to complete the logon process and can "see" the server from the client PC, whilst logged on as the user. When I change one of the users from being a roaming user to having a local profile, the user is able to log on correctly, with no errors, and the local profile is created without any errors. I am relatively new to administering Microsoft products having come from a UNIX background, but I believe that I understand the theory - it is the practice which is causing me problems. I have searched the internet for a solution to the problem, I have purchased the Microsoft Press "Windows Small Business Server 2003 Administrator's Companion" book, and I have searched the Microsoft web-site, but I cannot find the answer to my problem.     - Keep file server running if SBS 2000 box down I have tried this but when I switch of the SBS box things are not working. Being doing it after hours so maybe a bit tired....lol Flattened 2000 server (file server) and looking for some ideas before I attempt again. All workstations are XP. The idea is if there is a failure of SBS box, granted email and internet are down but working files are put onto file server so staff can continue to work. On paper the concept is straight forward but as my experiances have shown I am missing something. The biggest problem was getting validated on the Domain if a pc was switched off and the SBS box was switched off. Being XP they could logon to the pc but accessing the file server shares didn't work. Anyone actually got the scenario set up ? TIA Tag: hi Tag: 164376

    - install printer on 98 os based workstation Today I want to add a network printer to a 98 os workstaion in SBS 2000 domain. The printer i choose to connect to is a device to another workstation running 2000 pro who worked as a printer server in SBS 2000 domain. I did the same thing for a 2000 pro workstation, it was done smoothly, but when i try to do this for a 98 os workstation, it prompted me insert a 98 2nd os CD. I do not have the 98 os CD at hand.     - POP3 Virtual Server Help Hi Guys One of our bosses works from home and wants to be able to check his emails, and he doesn't want to use Outlook Web Access, he is old and likes his Outlook Express.     - Device/Firewall for SOHO in AD 2003 Env Background: We have three servers with its own web contents available on the Internet. Our servers are not behing ANY firewall and would liekt o place behind firewall (I only want to expose the necessary services to the outside world - nothing more). Each server is Windows 2003 Std. and one is a DC. (1) I have three servers internally that has its own public IP. (2) I want a firewall device to block everything except the web sites (other services) I have on each one. I want o publish any service (FTP, RDP, etc) and punch a hole in the firewall device and port forwad to correct internal IP. Question: ======= What device for the SOHO (cheap), that will allow me to forward traffic from each PUBLIC IP (only 3 servers to forward to) to the correct Internal Server? Basically, I want a device that will function a simple firewall, and also port forwards traffic of public IP to the appropriate internal IP / server.     - HELP HELP HELP Hi All, I hope someone can help here. We had a total hardware failure on a the mirror of a W2K BackOffice box with Exchange 2000. We were able to save the Raid 5 D drive that has the Exchange Private and Public Store. On the new hardware we installed W2K and ran the 2000 BackOffice setup. As part of this setup we joint the box to the existing domain and installed Exchange2000. After reboot, the server had joined the domain and had replicated the AD from the other DC. When starting the Enterprise Admin the public and private store were showing but couldn't be started. The property pages are pointing to the right DIR on the D drive where all logfiles and the Private and Public store files are. We then noticed that there is no M drive and when we checked the services, none of the Exchange services are there. We have no clue what has happened. Does anybody know about a white paper or something that we could use to get Exchange back up again? If needed we can whipe the C drive again and start from scratch.     - Duplicate IP Addresses I have a small network consisting of a server running SBS2000 and approximately 20 PC running either Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 Pro. For the last few days when I have arrived at the office in the morning I find I am unable to access the server. When I look at the server there is a message indicating that the server has detected a duplicate IP address. If I reboot the server the problem goes away. This message also appears on many workstations. I have looked at the event logs on the server and can see this message repeated many times over a number of hours but I am unable to determine when it started. I have now increased the size of the log file. I have checked the event logs on several PCs as well and can see that this problem occurs on and off throughtout the day with the PCs as well.     - Server resources are low, please help, it's urgent Hi everyone, I have an SBS2000 server running SQL2000 and Exchange 2000. For the last 2 weeks after the exchange implementation my server has becomes short on memory. I came back today from a 2 week vacation and got this surprise with a message on the health monitor a warning from Paging file.The % Memory Available is 11MB from 1GB that's too low, why is this happening and what can I do to solve this?? My C drive space is 4.2gb with 38% of free disk space and my E (share Drives) drive is 32 gb. with 56% of disk space. When I go to the System properties in the performance options this is what I have: Virtual Memory: Total Pagain file size for all drives 1830mb.     - Guest administrator access First of all thanks to all the helpful folk who give us answers. Greatly appreciated. The question I have regarding guest administrator access, is as follows. The company wants to have an independant consultant come in and do a network and security audit on the system as we have installed it to look for, I am assuming, security holes, or misconfigurations etc. I have suggested that I create a guest administrator account because I am uncomfortable handing out the administrator credentials to an outside party. As well the administrator doesn't need access to personal folders etc he just needs to look over the logs and performance monitors etc. If this were you, what permissions would you give him/her?     - Max Exchage DB size in SBS Small Business Server imposes a 6gb limit on the size of the Exchange DB correct? Is the file I should be watching the "priv1.edb" file?? If so, I saw this file awfully close to the 6gb mark last week. I then warned users they better clean up their emails, start archiving etc... Many of them have done this. However, the size of the priv1.edb file still shows the same... What gives here? I made sure they aslso deleted their "deleted items" as many forget to do that...Am I looking at the wrong file to determine the size of my exchange DB?     - More fun with permissions and permissions need to print via RDP Using kb article # 244600 I've been doing a comparsion of the folder permissions as they exist on our 2k sbs server because they just seem too open. I think someone has changed something. Is there anyway to tell who has changed security on files? The real issue is that I have changed a few settings because someone had give "everyone" full access to the root of "C" and that just doesn't quite seem right. Can some one correct me on this? Also, adjusting the security permissions on the following folders, Documents and Settings, programs, %systemroot%, %systemroot%\Addins, %SystemRoot%\Connection Wizard according to that of the kb article, suddenly we are having printing fun. According to a previous post we updated everyones RDP client to vs 5.2 because certain users at a remote location where not able to transfer their local printers to the Terminal Server sessions. After updating the RDP client they were then able to print. Now after changing the permissions on the above folders, users establishing an RDP session, their printers transfer to the terminal server but they can print. The print job redirect hits the remote PC but then just disappears. If I assign the user administrator rights they can suddenly print. Obviously I don't want to give everyone administrator rights so I'm wondering what permissions are needed to fix this issue? Again assistance is so much appreciated. thanks. Tag: hi Tag: 164291

    - Compare two SBS boxes We have two SBS boxes installed in two different branches of our company. The setup of two SBS were made in hardwares almost 100% identical (Dell PowerEdger 1600). As the two machines were installed in different moments and by different people, we believed that they have different configurations. Respecting the characteristics that are own of each installation of SBS (domain name, users accounts, users files and folder, etc), Exist some tool or tip to compare the two boxes and detect the differences? Maybe to compare with a third installation, 100% clean and to detect the differences? (ISA rules, DNS and DHCP, Windows configurations, etc) The Objective is to have the configurations the most similar possible. Differences into Registry, INI files, configuration files, version of DLLs. I understand that the task is not easy. Maybe impossible. Maybe the simplest way is reinstall the boxes starting from the zero, writing down and following the same steps in the two branches. Does anybody have some different idea?     - ISA and Sonicwall Hi, a big pat on the back for whoever can help me here? I have an SBS2K ISA server with 2 NICs on separate IP ranges. The external NIC connects to a Sonicwall at the outskirts of my network. The internal NIC connects to the corporate LAN. I want to use the Sonicwall Global VPN client for remote users to connect into the internal network. What is the best way of achieving this as the VPN will terminate at the network between the Sonicwall and the external NIC of the ISA server and we need the users to be able to access the corporate LAN?     - Strange Defragmentation Issue Hello I hope everyone is doing great. I have a file server that just does file sharing. When I defrag the system drive where the OS is loaded it is fine. But when I defrag the data drive, the server becomes unresponsive. through a terminal or console session. This is a Windows 2003 Server. Nothing else is loading except for the virus scan. The array is partitioned into "C", "E" and "F" drives and the vendor (Dell) added its own partition for emergency boots. We bought additional drives which exactly match the original drives with the intention of expanding the "C" drive and adding an additional drive. We understand that there is a limit of 4 partitions and can live with that, however we were given to believe that the disk management software would allow expanding the partitions, but it doesn't.     - Strange PDF Problem Hi All Our users are experiencing delays of upto 5 minutes when saving .pdf documents to the server. If they save them locally, they save in seconds, if they save them to the server, it can take upto 5 minutes! They are not big files either, 3 - 400kb. They have adobe reader 6 on there PC and the server has adobe 5, would that cause any problems? I never use it on the server so I have never updated it. For some reason the root of C: has one permission set, everyone / full control. Seems scary to me and I don't know how it exactly happened but I have suspicisions.     - NAT problems SBS 2003 Some XP and windows 2k clients don't get a translated address from the windows 2003 SBS NAT pool and can't connect to the internet. I can work fine with databases etc on the same server, but to go beyond the server, the 10.0.0.0/24 address needs to be translated into a 192.168.254.0/28 I have excluded from the NAT pool the outside interface of the sbs server which is 192.168.254.7/28 . When I enable the basic firwall and disable it after it works again for a while. I think because then all NAT entries are cleared. Any ideas ?     - Renamed Admin Accounts 30 min Delayed Login to Client Workstations Good-evening everyone, I posted this earlier and several people tried to help me out. I was wonder if someone can help me out with Windows Small Business Server 2000 domain controller and client desktop logon with administrator account. I have a domain controller which has been in operation for quite some time. The original administrator account has been renamed for security as is all our other clients ever since the beginning of the server's life span. But when I try to use the account to login to any client machine joined to the domain, whether it be a new install or not, the system stalls at Loading profile and settings.... window, but the mouse is still active, and the blue animated line on the window still scrolls. When I remove the Home Folder of the administrator account it works fine. But when I add back the home folder it fails. The Home Folder is a network share. After waiting for 30 min or so, the login succeeds and all the mappings are correct. I have a feeling that the login is trying to query the AD for this property and is not returning the value of the Home Folder. The client ip is 10.0.0.25 my enternal ip is 10.0.0.1 my external network is 192.168.5.1 and my router is 192.168.5.0.     - Shared fax problems Has anyone experienced problems with MS Shared Fax? We are experiencing major problems with receiving faxes. Sometimes we receive a partial fax may 3 of 10 pages the next time we receive the same fax we receive 6 of 10.     - Exch2k Rejecting External "Internal" Emails Hi group, hope you can help with this one (maybe 2 problems?)....SBS2k (almost fully patched :), Exch2k, etc. etc., setup right off the whitepapers.... We have POP3 email addresses at our ISP for our on-the-road salesmen. These external email addresses are not set up in our internal Exchange environment, even though the email addresses have the format of salesman@emaildomain.com. When we send an email from our internal Exchange server to one of the salesman, Exchange has an "unresolved" recipient, so based on our SMTP settings the email is forwarded to our ISP's mail.emaildomain.com, where the messages find their way to the right salesman's POP3 account. This has worked great for many months. However, beginning this morning, Exchange is refusing to forward the emails and is issuing the following error: salesman1@emaildomain.com' on 9/8/2004 11:11 AM You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator. <sol.serverdomain.local #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 me@email.com> Access not allowed There were no changes made on the server, no change to Exchange's config, backups running fine, other emails - no problems, and the ISP is fine. Can you all think of a reason why these would suddenly stop working? I don't know if this is related, but during diagnosis I did locate an Exchange warning-level Application Event Log entry that started 3 weeks ago. It is issued twice per day (first time 8/18 12:01AM, second time12:02 PM) and has reissued approximately one-half hour later each day since (today the first warning today was issued at 11:01 AM, the second will probably be issued at 11:02 PM tonight). Here it is: "MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store, MTA Connections, Event 2000. Verify that the Microsoft Exchange MTA service has started. Consecutive ma-open calls are failing with error 3051."     - new server Hi We currently are running SBS2000. This server also acts as our file server and we are slowly running out of room (it is also somewhat old). I was looking into buying a new server to act as our file server (so the current SBS would just manage the domain/email etc). I was on the dell website and noticed you could buy a server with SBS2003 for about the same price as windows server 2003. That being said, is it fairly easy to move the current SBS2000 to a new server that has SBS2003?     - User As Local Administrator on Laptop Hello, SBS2K, WinXP. I have a user that I set up with a domain profile on the SBS. He logs into his laptop both in the office and on the road. He is not able to do some things on the laptop, such as defrag, because he does not have the privileges. I wanted to allow him to be part of the Administrators group on his local PC, but when I went into the Local Users and Groups on the laptop, his profile is not there. I assume it is because he has a domain account and logs into it, not the local PC. That said, how can I make him part of the Administrators group only on his PC. I looked in Member Of tab of his domain account via Active Directory, but didn't see anything. Is this something that has to be set via Group Policy? Also, after I make these changes, how can I get his profile to update? He is currently out of the office and will be for a few more days. He does have the VPN connection to the network set up.     - problems adding client licenses.... We have a Windows 2000 SBS server and an add'l Windows 2003 (standard) server. The win2K3 OS came with 5 licenses. We purchased an add'l 5 licenses to install. When I log on to the win2k3 server locally using the administrator account and attempt to add licenses, I get an error message stating that the "license logging service is not running on the target machine, or the target machine is not accessible". When I check the service in question, it has been disabled and can not be started. I then tried loggin on to teh win2k3 server using my domain admin account and was able to add a "new license" using the Licensing app in control panel. But when I click the client tab and select the win2k3 server in our domain, once again, I get the above listed error...
