Windows can accomodate many nics without problem and only traffic for
subnets routed through that nic will travel across it, with default traffic
going via the default gateway.
ISA can handle multiple nics, bucketloads of 'em. But if you have more than
two the SBS wizards will get confused (well, maybe not confused, it's just
that they weren't designed to accomodate a trihomed system, let alone a
system with 64 nics).
More importantly. WHY?
Does DL have external connections whose aggregate bandwidth exceeds 1Gbps?
(the reasonable capacity of one external nic)
Not from the sound of it, but he is looking at load balancing.
If the external interface of his SBS is able to handle transfer rates a
reasonable percentage (let alone multiplier) of the interconnect speed his
performance is not limited by his server's ability to control load sharing
as much as the connection method's ability.
If DL suggests he has two internet sources who can max out a 100Mbps nic it
surprises me he is running SBS, but wether he is or not is of no real
consequence.
If DL suggests he would like to implement a second internet connection so
that traffic on IC1 does not impact traffic on IC2, or vice versa, then I
suggest that multiple nics on the server may not be the best methodology to
use. A single external nic to a device capable of establishing the multiple
internet/interconnect connections would allow DL to have a standard SBS
setup while accomplishing his requirements.
