Song of the Week - Nov 1, 2003
Gosh, is it already November 1st? It was exactly 14 years ago that I left
my job with Unisys (Burroughs) Corp to go work as the IT Manager for the
regional blood center. Seems like yesterday! Speaking of which, it seems
like yesterday when I installed my first SBS2000 server, and not nearly
three years ago. Now SBS2003 is out! Time does fly.
So, in honor of all we do, we give a tip of the hat to my favorite group,
the Beatles. Unfortunately, I cannot take credit for this particular
parody -- but it was so-o-o good, I had to pass it on, with just a couple of
personal tweaks!
YESTERDAY
---------------
Yesterday,
All those backups seemed a waste of pay.
Now my database has gone away.
Oh I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly,
There's not half the files there used to be,
And there's a deadline
hanging over me
The system crashed so suddenly.
I pushed something wrong
What it was I could not say.
Now all my data's gone
and I long for yesterday-ay-ay-ay.
Yesterday,
The need for back-ups seemed so far away.
I knew my data was all here to stay,
Now I believe in yesterday.

Auto Scan disk program
In an effort to help proactive administration more automated, I've added
another free program, AutoScanDisk. This along with AutoDefrag can be
implemented with scheduled tasks and couple that with SUS, your trips to
keep workstations in good shape are drastically reduced!
Go to www.mcse2003.com and look in the New Downloads section for that and a
couple dozen other GREAT tools like a free password unlock program that
contains just about every controller card driver on the market.

"Automatic Discovery" and ISA
Hi,
I am just wondering if someone can help me? We have a SBS2000 setup
with ISA running just in cache mode and an external PIX (please no
comments about firewalls security etc). The issue has come about that
we need to enable the publishing of the ISA server proxy via auto
discovery due to the company now having a number of VPN and laptop
clients (all Secure NAT). I know how to set up Automatic Discovery and
I also know of the problem of the default port 80 conflicting with the
IIS, additionally the Auto Discovery needs to work via DNS so we
cannot change the default port in ISA. My answer was to set up two
internal IP addresses on the internal NIC and have ISA listen on the
second IP (192.168.16.8) address and remove any listening on the
standard 192.168.16.2, so that ISA and IIS could both listen to port
80. I have set up the WPAD alias and A record to point to the second
IP address
I thought this should work but when a VPN client logs in and trys to
access a web page a login prompt appears for 192.168.16.2 - should
this not be 192.168.16.8? The credentials a entered and seem to be
accepted, but no external web pages can be acessed. Why does the login
prompt appear when the user details have aready been entered via the
VPN login and why does it continue to point to 192.168.16.2 - have I
missed something?
I know our Internet gateway is configured to only allow 192.168.16.2
to access the Internet so no one can by-pass the proxy, can this be
causing the problem. If ISA server listens on 192.168.16.8 does it
also send the request out for the web page via 192.168.16.8 or
192.168.16.2 - I do not know how ISA handles this.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Any Suggestions ...
Okay gang, Here is what I am encountring at the customer site:
The Situation:
--------------
The customer has MS Exchange server hosted at their ASP (Application
Service Provider). They connect to their MS Exchange through the
Internet (Cable Modem - Broad Band)using MS Outlook 2K/XP edition
fully patched and all. There are about 5 computers with WIN2K and 1
with XP Professional, all patched as well. Their MS Exchange server
is hosted behind the firewall (not sure which firewall the ASP is
using). They have a SAV GESTETNER printer which is behind the
firewall as well and hosted by the ASP. They connect to the printer
through standard TCP/IP port, therefore not through the print
server.
Now the customer wants to host their own MS Exchange, have a
firewall and VPN. I suggested SBS and they agreed. The customer
wanted to have Firewall and VPN portion done first and just
configure the MS Exchange portion and transfer the MX record later
on. I installed SBS and configured the firewall/VPN and MS Exchange.
The configuration and installation went smooth and successful.
The Network Configs:
-------------------
They wanted to keep static IP addressing and SNAT so that they can
ping because of some requirements they have because of their
development/programming enviornment. Their IP scheme is as follows:
Internal IP Address: 10.125.1.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.125.1.2
They wanted to keep it that way and didnt want to use any other IP
Scheme because thats what they have been using all the time.
Please note: MS Exchange and the SAV GESTETNER printer hosted with
ASP, NAT'd and behind the firewall.
They have encoded the MS Exchange Server and Printer's public IP
address in their host files on each computer which want to use the
MS Exchange Server and printing. Therefore they can ping with just
the host name and connect with the MS Exchange and the printer with
no problem!
The Problem:
------------
Few problems start arising after the installtion:
1) They were not able to log on to ASP hoste MS Exchange. Now it was
obvious that I needed to change the MS Exchange Server name in their
MS Outlook. So I did! I changed it from the new one (New SBS
Settings) to the old one but it still didnt work. As soon as I
change the name to their ASP hosted Exchange Server, after few
seconds it defaults back to new SBS Exchange Server!! Well I did
some work around and left the new SBS server Exchange settings as it
is and created a new profile specifying the name/settings for the
OLD ASP hosted MS Exchange! What I am thinking here is that once the
MX records are straighten up then I can delete/remove the old ASP
hosted Exchange profile. Now it worked with all computer whose OS
was WIN2K but with the one using XP Professional. It just CAN NOT
connect to the old ASP hosted Exchange server!! It just says that it
CAN NOT connect to the old ASP hosted Exchange server. Well, to work
around I put that computer to use OWA till we get the MX records
straighten up!
2) The second problem is that they can not access the SAV GESTETNER
printer. No one can print from that printer. The error message says
that the printer is disconnected! I deleted the printer and
installed it again but to no avail. Same error message.
Now I know that before SBS everything was working! I have no idea
what could have changed so that they can not print and the one XP
machine can not connect to the MS Exchange server. If anyone have
any ideas or suggestions, please let me know. I appreciate any
reply. Thanks in advance..

some of the reg keys do not get deleted!). My SBS is

Internet Connection Problem
Well it's not actually an Internet Connection problem, it's a delay when
going from a non-secure page on our web site from a workstation behind our
SBS2000 Server.
We have a DSL connection with a Netopia Cayman 3546 Router (DHCP off). We
have static IP addresses, 2 NIC and have set up SBS EXACTLY as described in
http://www.sbslinks.com/sbs2000router.htm .
The most often use of the internet here is to enter orders into our web
store (www.tapeandmedia.com). The site is hosted externally at a datacenter
in NJ, we are in CT.
The problem is: when entering orders, when we go from a non-secure page to
a secure page to enter credit card info, the page seems to stall while
loading and takes 20-30 seconds to load. This does not happen at other
locations and it does not happen if I plug my laptop directly into the
router.
I have spent hours with tech support of our DSL service and have found no
problems with their service.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Has anyone else had a similar
problem?

ISA - IP Address setting for External NIC (2nd)
Setting up a router (which is connected to a switch) for access to the

I know I have to set up the router first, with its information from the ISP
(DHCP PPPoE). My question is what external IP address do I use for the 2nd

Do I : 1) modify the LAT table, make one available by removing it
2) use the same as the router or
3) assign a new external address? if so what is the

Set up OS/RAID
I have a small company-2 remote offices and 11
workstations with the server in one office. We utilize
Access and SQL databases for most all of our data, part
of which is website generated.
I have a server which currently has 5 drives-4 are in a
RAID5 array and 1 is hot spare. I was recently told that
having the OS on that array really slows down the SQL
performance.
I am not a whiz on this so does anybody have any better
suggestions. I can add one more drive to my case and
setup 1-RAID5 array and 1-RAID1 array if that might help.
Thanks for any insight.

Hi,
We have SBS 2000 running on an IBM x232 Server. Of late,
I find that the Exchange Server stops responding to
clients and I find a lot of error message in the
Applicaton log. However, all the Exchange services remain
started. This is happening atleast once a day. If I
restart the server everything starts working fine and it
continues for another 24 hours. I have also noticed that
when this happens, I am not able to get into the details
of the events in the Event logs and when I try to close
the Event viewer I get a similar message saying
that "Close all property pages before you close Event

Citrix/TS server on SBS network
Hi all.. looking for network config options. Here is what I have
1-4 Static IP's with 1.5Mbps up/down ISP
1 Switch (10/100) 24 port
1 Hub (10/100) 24 port (currently unused)
1 SBS server (3 NIC's)
1 W2000 server (2 NIC's or more if needed)
20 clients
Here is what I want: The best network config option using the two servers
for Web, FTP and Citrix/TS.
Currently I have the SBS server acting as the router/firewall using ISA and
the Web, FTP and Citrix aps are on the second W2000 server connected only on
the Lan side. Lately we have started hosting sites with bigger traffic and
are using citrix durring the day. I feel that the SBS server is working too
hard to process all the requests (email, file services, web, firewall etc)
Is there a way to safely get the W2000 server out from behind the SBS server
even though Citrix is being used to host database apps and email from the
SBS server. (meaning the w2000 server still needs access to the Lan side of
the SBS server)(Citrix is currently accessed from botht the Wan and Lan
side)
I know there must be tonnes of info out there somewhere but my searches have
proven unsuccessful. Any direction would prove most helpfull. Tag: sbs 2003 out.. Tag: 139090

permissions as all other users on the network..
This problem occurs when I try to open Outlook - I can't seem to work around

access it's data files.
Other aspects seem to be fine, and the drive mapping is just dandy from what

server, fine using explorer...

Server DNS and 2 NIC's
Hi,
we recently reconnected our ADSL after a time of the line
being down.
We have a server with 2 nics, 1 for the internal address
(192.168.0.199) and one for the external address via
router for VPN and internet access(10.202.1.2 - gateway
10.202.1.1).
There seems to be a problem with dns in that in our
internal network when I ping server1 from our internal
address it comes up with 10.202.1.2
I have tried the fixes in microsoft articles 292822 -
disabling netbios for all RRAS connections, adding host
record for my internal server IP, and 289735 - to make the
DNS interface just listen on 192.168.0.199. but to no
avail. as soon as I connect via the vpn link, the internal
dns IP , gets overwritten by the external IP and when we
ping internally, we are seeing the wrong IP address.
Any help regarding this would be much appreciated.

Disk partitioning on SBS 200 install
Apologies, SBS Newbie here.......
We have been running NT 4.0 & W2K servers in house, but
are installing a new SBS 2000 server (2003 will come

Simple LAN one SBS with 2 NICS and an ADSL connection.
Now that I understand I can run my own WebServer using dynamic DNS I am very
keen on doing so.
I have read many people advising against doing so for security reasons
however if the following are true is there still a concern:
a) I underatnd ISA is a rock silid firewall product
b) Maintain the server fully patched constantly
c) Run up to date AV software on the server
I do not fully understand what is meant by a DMZ etc but is there a
recommended setup of connecting a WebServer to the world or will SBS as
decribed above suffice ?

Wierd Outlook problem
Before posting here, I tried posting to some of the Outlook newsgroups, and
have received no replies.
Issue is that I have one user (Windows XP Pro with Office XP) on an SBS
network. Her Outlook is configured with NO background for her emails. Yet,
when she sends out some emails, the signature line switches to a yellow
font, and her emails go out with a background included - a very light
checkered (square) background with light blue lines.
We've gone in everywhere where we could configure or change the default
text, font and background and everything seems OK.
I found some postings via Google from some other people who have encountered
the same problem, but no real solutions. They appear to lean towards an
issue with using Microsoft WORD as the email editor.

OT: Sonicwall SOHO3 Question
I'm considering replacing my Linksys with a Sonciwall SOHO3 firewall
appliance, because I need more than the single VPN pass-through allowed by
the Linksys. (I don't object to the extra layer of security, either). I
have two questions that I can't find addressed anywhere, and I know several
SBSers have used the Sonicwall.
1. Do I need as many licenses as I have users, or since the Sonicwall will
only connect to one device (the SBS), can I get by with the minimum number
of licenses?
2. Do I have to buy the VPN option to allow VPN pass-through? I don't need
any of their client software, encryption, etc. - just to be able to pass
PPTP and protocol 47 through the Sonicwall to the SBS. Will the 10-user
Sonicwall support 10 VPN tunnels in its most basic configuration?
I could go with a beefier Linksys, but the Sonicwall seems to be a stronger
layer of defense for not a lot of money, unless I have to start throwing in
optional VPN licenses. Tag: sbs 2003 out.. Tag: 139039
HELP! Urgent - Strange Network Problems
Hi all,
I have a customer with some VERY strange network issues. This started about
a week ago. One of the print servers on the network stopped working. We
chalked that up to a connection issue. A couple of days later, they had a
network problem with a couple of workstations. We corrected one with a NIC
and the other by reseating the cable at the wall connection. Yesterday no
one could connect to the server and we tracked it down to a NIC on the
mainboard. Dell came out and replaced the MB and all was well last night.
Today they're telling me that 3 other units and one printer with a Jet
Direct card can't be accessed or connect to the server. The problem units
have been split between three different switches. We tried all the usual
fixes, changing ports, changing which switch the unit is connected to,
reseat all cables, etc.
Any suggestions on where to start looking? This has me baffeled. Could it be
some kind of strange DOS attack? How would I tell if that's the case? At
this point I'm grasping at straws so any help would be appreciated.

Server Security
2 quick questions for a Fri.
1) When installing SBS2000 - Do you need to install the Shared Modem Service
when using an "always on" ADSL Modem?
2) I've been recommended GFI MailEssentials & MailSecurity for SBS2000 - is
this enough or do we need GFI DownloadSecurity for ISA aswell. I am
intending on limiting what files can be downloaded & to what client
machines. I believe the MailSecurity checks the LAN for Trojans etc. Is it
risky or is it worth forking out £350?

VPN connection and IE
After establishing a VPN connection to my server, I am
unable to browse the internet with IE on the client. The
page eventually times out with message "Cannot find
server or DNS Error". I assume it has something to do
with DNS resolution, but I don't know how to correct
this. Could somebody please advise.

ISA Configuration
Please help, I am trying to use MSN Messenger 6.1 with a webcam, I can see
the other person but they cant see me. The chat works without a problem but
no video or audio. Do I need to configure ISA and open a special port to
make this work???. Thanks in advance. Tag: sbs 2003 out.. Tag: 138995

testing web hosting on sbs2k
i have a single nic sbs2k and a netgear router. router plugs into adsl
modem. i can access sbs on port 3389 and 25 (via port forwarding on the
router) from customers offices no problems. as an experiment i set router to
forward port 80 to sbs. i was expecting to see the default sbs web page, but
i get zip.
if i sit on a lan ws in my office and type http://sbs2k i get the default
web page o.k. I was expecting to type my public ip address 203.222.xxx.xxx

all i want is to type in my public ip address and get a web site up.
any thoughts on what i am doing wrong.

Event Viewer - System Log empty for days
Hi
In event viewer my system log has been empty for about a
week now. this is disturbing for me. Does anyone know
what might cause this behaviour.
The only changes I have made were to add GFI Mail
Essentials. I have now disabled GFI, as it really messed
up my backup software (BE for SBS v9).
Still o events though! Thanks

GP to lock down ports on clients
I want to create a GP that allows me as an Administrator
from the SBS to apply Policies that disables the plugging
in of USB devices (such as Pen Drives)!
I also want to disable the CD-ROM and Floppy disk drives
in case someone brings in a virus from home.
Can someone tell me how I do this and what entries in GP
Editior I need to tweak?
Thanks,

Title: SLOW LOGON WITH XP AND 2000 SERVER sponsored by
From: alfatec
Points: 50 Grade: B Date: 06/09/2003 10:12AM PDT
Type: PAQ
I have just upgraded my NT4 PDC to a Win 2000 DC with what
seemed no problems. I have a mixture of Win 95/98 and XP
machines on the network. The 95 and 98 machines all log on
to the system really quickly but the XP machines although
log on they take up to 5 - 7 minutes before you can use
them. When you type your user name in and domain and press
enter it goes in straight away but seems to stick
on "applying computer settings" for ages. I have active
directory running OK and think I have DNS running OK but I
am not 100% on the setup of DNS i.e. forward and reverse
looking zones etc. Once the machines are signed on I have
all the network drives, access to the net and shared
network folders so I am definetly connected to the server
but the XP machines just take so long to logon.

Slow logon to domain in XP Pro
http://www.windowsxpatoz.com/cgi-bin/performance/index.cgi?
answer=1036283899&id=1036282433
You may experience extremely long delays (up to 5 minutes)
when logging into domains using Windows XP Pro. This is
caused by the asyncronous loading of networking during the
boot up process. This speeds up the login process in a
stand-alone workstation by allowing the user to log in
with cached logon credentials before the network is fully
ready.
To disable this "feature" and restore your domain logons
to their normal speed, open the MMC and add the group
policy snap-in. Under Computer Configuration--
>Administrative Templates-->System-->Logon, change "Always
wait for the network at computer startup and logon" to
ENABLED.
This can be fed to clients via a group policy from a
Windows 2000 server by upgrading the standard policy
template with the XP policy template. Since this is an XP
only command, non-XP systems will ignore it in a domain
distributed group policy. Tag: sbs 2003 out.. Tag: 138965
is My SBS Server being hacked?
Hi All,
My server, has been doing strange things recently. I've
noticed that security policies have been set, that I never
set.
My main concernt is that in my security log, under the
event viewer, I can see that "administrator" has logged
on, during out of office hours.. early in the morning.
(nothing is running at this time, i.e. backup etc)
Does this sound dodge?
Does anyone know of a site to help me lock down our
server, as it's connected directly to a router to the net,
and is used for email and web access.
Thanks in advance. Tag: sbs 2003 out.. Tag: 138964
.exe etc. attachments block in Exchange?
Hi,
I would like to prevent .exe attachments to be stored in
the Exchange Database. WhY? We have sales staff that
travel and are not the most IT liturate and I want to
eliminate the possibility them running an .exe in OWA.
Or even better, how can I only allow specified attachment
types and notify the sender with a nice message to pack
whatever they want to send in a .zip if must be?
A search here did not give me results, nor did an hour
spending searching on ms.com (GRRRR!).
Thanks,
Sam Tag: sbs 2003 out.. Tag: 138963

Thank you for posting your question to the Newsgroup.
You can change the default domain used for e-mail
addresses by changing the
Default Recipient Policy....
Start the Exchange System Manager
Expand the Recipients icon
Expand Recipient Policies
Display the properties of the Default Policy
Click the e-mail addresses tab
Add a new SMTP address and set it as the Primary,
After you've added the new address, right click the
Default Policy and
choose Apply this policy now. This will update your
active directory users
to have the new address.

Frank Brown

Modem sharing client on Windows XP
I have managed to configure the modem sharing client to work successfully on
Windows 98 machines, connecting to SBS 2000, but cannot get it to work on
Windows XP Pro.
The XP Pro client has been configured as per the instructions in:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316418
The modem is installed in XP and I can query the modem. However, when I use
hyperterminal and try to make a connection with the shared modem it says
"connecting", then immediately says "disconnected". The modem makes no
attempt to dial. I have tried this on two XP clients and get the same result
with both of them. Event logging is turned on for the modem sharing service
on the server, but there are no messages showing in the event log relating
to the modem sharing service.
Where does the service log events?
Is there anything additional to the kb article that I need to do to get this
working on an XP client?
I notice at the bottom of the configuration instructions it says "IMPORTANT:
The modem that is used for modem sharing should not be used by any other
program or service. Instead, it should be dedicated to modem sharing
exclusively". The modem I am trying to use is also used for the shared fax
for the server. Windows 98 does not have a problem with this. Does this
cause a problem in XP, to the extent that the modem sharing will not work at
all if the modem is also used for another service?
Best regards,
Andrew Stevens. Tag: sbs 2003 out.. Tag: 138953
