    - Consulting Rates Hi, I'm looking for some feedback on consulting rates in the Sydney marketplace.     - ntbackup problem with exchange Hi, Any light that can be shone on this problem would be really appreciated. We are running ntbackup on a smallbiz2000 server. Seeking to back it up to a tape drive. Backup of data files is fine. Backing up exchange causes the following messages to appear in the event log.     - Administrator and Personal Consoles After restoring an SBS2000 system from tape, every time I open either consoles, I get a "snap-in failed to initialize" error.     - Internet Connection Wizard Setup Error Having trouble with Exchange? It was running OK? Now I get this error when running the Internet Connection Wizard. Also noticed the SMTP connector is missing in MMC. I looked at the support files 287172 & 280038 below, but the didn't help? I reinstalled Exchange Server 6.0 and latest updates from MS. Also tried Adsiedit.msc edit to make new container, nothing worked. Any help would be great.     - Undeliverable Email Began noticing this earlier today, that email sent to addresses like hotmail, yahoo and excite were coming back anywhere from 1 to 3 hours after sending with the following message: The e-mail system was unable to deliver the message, but did not report a specific reason. Check the address and try again. If it still fails, contact your system administrator. < remt28.cluster1.charter.net #4.0.0> Other addresses are ok and have been confirmed as received by the fact that they have replied... Seems like this sort of thing happened quite sometime ago with AOL addresses and I had to put "mail.charter.net" or something like that in a field when re-running the ICW to correct the problem (which it did). Not sure if this is the same type of issue. Any ideas on where to begin to look or is it a problem with Charter?     - not receiving mail from Exchange 2000 Hi, I have configured new users on SBS2000 and mailboxes for them. However, their Outlook does not download received mail, even though it is in the mailbox. No error messages. Outgoing mail reaches recipients. Incoming gets NDR with "user unknown" message.     - Hunting that elusive first client ... Hello, everyone! Well, like a lot of people, I was laid off (from a helljob), and now trying to get the consulting biz going. In addition to getting the details like insurance and an ISP I can trust to recommend/resell, I'm chasing the first client. Preferably this would be a B2B client, but I wouldn't turn down a B2C at the moment. We've decided to market Computer and Network installations, upgrades, with staff and executive training. This has generated two questions so far, in addition to the marketing problem. I'd like to get feedback on all three, if possible. Question One: With marketing, so far I've: 1.) Made up fliers and posted them on the public boards in local grocery stores and Wal-Marts. (Hey, people gotta eat, y'know!); 2.) Handed out business cards to people, and let them know I pay a 'finder's fee' for referrals; 3.) Walkabout to local small businesses (mom & pop's) with flyers & cards; 4.) Pulled business info off the state's web site for fictitious name registration, dumped that into a contacts database along with #3, so I can send out mail merge letters. Other suggestions? I'm really in the dark here. Question Two: Are there any preferences between the local white-box hardware suppliers, Dell/etc, and something like Dell's whitebox marketing program? Someone sees a Dell, etc. workstation listed for $399, they don't realize that it doesn't come with an OS or something like an office suite, not to mention printers, etc. This can easily rack up that $400 workstation to an $1800 workstation ... What are your preferences? Question Three: Point Of Sale terminals. Two of my potential clients are restaurants that right now just have the usual credit card box up front, but they'd like something fancier. Now, I can build them a workstation, even wall-mount a flat-panel display, but that doesn't get them the restaurant software, or the POS software that ties in to something like Simply Accounting running on the manager's office machine. I know that QuickBooks offers a POS kit, but you need to buy QuickBooks, then buy two copies of the POS add-on pack in addition. Since Intuit seems to be taking licensing and pricing lessons from M$FT (<g> - Don't sue me, Bill!), I'm looking at alternatives to QuickBooks. How do you handle the retail/restaurant POS problem?     - Help Really need your help! in Exchange 2000, I cannot mount a public folder store. I had a backp so I just renamed the pub1.edb and pub1.stm to old.edb and old.stm then remount the store. it said db file not found so I click yes to create a new one. after that I renamed that old to pub1 but still cannot mount the store it just said "Error 0xfffffbf8 starting database "First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (ABC-SERVER)" on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store.     - Exchange and Email setup advice I recently setup up a SBS 2000 server for a client and have some questions on how best to implement email. Here is the situation: Main office is in CT with 1 branch office in FL. Email and webhosting are through an external server. Right now i am using the POP3 connector to d/l the mail then move it to each users exchange account. The Branch office is not setup on the server because its only one person at this time and really has no need for access. The problem is that the branch office can not recieve emails from the Main office because it sends through exchange returns with an unknown user error.     - make is a domain controller after install?? I installed 2000 SBServer and it is set up as a workgroup and I need it to be the domain controller. I don't think it gave me that option during setup (possibly because it could not find the NIC - bad driver). Anyway, can I make it a domain contoller or do I have to reinstall??? HELP.     - Help - Really Strange Problem on Security Help, I have just installed an SBS2K server. Everything is all OK but when users create new files in the company folder the files DO NOT inherit the folder security. The user becomes the owner of the file and no one else can access this. Reset the permissions and the file is OK. Any suggestions - None of the users have permissions to change / take ownership of files.     - SP1 for SBS2000 - slows system down Hi, Had the following scenario: Two (separate customers) with sbs2000. Downloaded and installed SBS SP1 (Not 1a) on both machines. After installing the systems slowed down considerably. Most noticably on the applications they were running, Syspro Accounting (Encore) on the one using flat files and not SQL, and a Personnel management program on another using ODBC to connect to the database on the server again not SQL only the database was on the server and not the app. Outlook would also be slow and sometimes a message would pop up stating trying to find Exchange server. LAN is 100MB Ethernet. The only common program, either than SBS2000, on both systems was Trend Anti Virus. Removed the Trend and system 1 was fine for a week, then slowed down again. Reinstalled Trend, but with the program updates , no difference in performance. Checked utilisation on CPU, Memory, HDD, Processes etc and all were well within tolerances. I then re-installed System 1 from scratch, applied the individual service packs (not sbs sp1) and everything is fine. Questions Has any body else seen this? If so what was the cause? What might be important is that both servers were single processor P4 servers running IDE Drives One had the Intel Woodruff serverboard and the other the gigabyte serverboard; P4 2,53; 512MB RAM Both have Promise RAID 20267 (RAIDO,1) on board and both were configured for disk mirroring Any help would be appreciated as System 2 still needs to be fixed!     - Shared Fax Problem We have a new SBS2000 server with Shared Fax installed. It will receive faxes from most people, but not from others. We are using a US Robotics External 56K modem, class 1.     - Naming domain .local I am about to implement a SBS2000 system with the .local for the domain. One concern I have is when I telnet to the mail port, it reports the system name with the .local domain. Now I have experience email problems with some clients in the past because the clients mail server couldn't do a DNS lookup for my mail server.     - Caching Just a quick one. I have a few customers with the same SBS2000 Server. When I visit their sites to download some Windows Updates etc, I go to windows update.com and download for example 7Mb of updates. This takes around 8-10 minutes over ADSL. The next workstaion I go to, I visit windowsupdate.com and do the same thing but this time, it only takes about 3 seconds to download and the the updates install. This is fine and have no problems here but when I try this using a workstation on my own SBS2000 network, windowsupdate downloads the updates each time from each workstation and takes a lot longer to complete my task.     - Active Directory Hi There, not sure if this is the correct place for this question, so if i am wrong can you please direct me on where it should be sent. I have a SBS2k Server (i didn't build), that i have been asked to manage. I am used to seeing and looking after the users by looking in the Active Directory Users & computers section, well some of the users are not in there. If you open the SBS Console some of the users appear in the Users section (just under Server Status) & the rest appear in the Active Directory.     - Linksys to linksys by-passing isa??? hy everyone, from what i have read in previuos posts, its not possible to create a gateway to gateway VPN configuration with one gateway being an ISA Server and the other gateway being the Linksys device. however since i only need one workstaion to connect to the other end i was thinking of getting another linksys device establish the tunnel between these two linksys devices, and place the pc on the DMZz, thus by passing isa altogether. the workstation would have the linksys as it´s default gateway. is this possible?     - MSX2000 stops logging NDR's after 2 530's Hi, I have setup a huge application log in eventviewer so I can catch all the info I need on exchange. Today a user received an NDR which I tracked to an eventlog listed below (it is rediculous that I need to do that to start with, to get any info on why the message was NDR'ed: No info obtainable for the user!) After two tries (remove the "read receipt", send to the from address) exchange stopped logging the NDR's. The 3rd and 4th attempt were NDR-ed to the user (with a copy to me as postmaster), but no trace in the application log. Is there a (hidden) setting that I missed?     - MS People ?? - Odd Event Log Problem Hi All, I have just come back from a couple of weeks off work to find my fully patched and upto date SBS2000 servers' event logs "unreadable". I say unreadable because when you first open up the event log viewer, all logs app, system etc are empty, however you can still click and highlight rows in the MMC display even though there is no information being shown, so something must be being loaded in to the MMC. Looking at the .evt files shows that there is information in the actual .evt files, but for some reason the Event Log MMC cannot view / display their content. Any suggestions?     - Moving hardware Can anyone point me in the direction of a best pactice for moving SBS 2000 to new hardware? The new hardware is dual processor Xeon, RAID 5, 3 x 36GB Disks, 2GB RAM. Existing hardware is single PIII processor, software mirror 2 x 18GB disks, 1GB RAM. Also, How do I move the data, especially Exchange? Can the SBS 2000 communicate with each other while I migrate the data or do I need a simpler method e.g. remove disk from existing server, install in the new one, copy the data, move disk back?     - Exchange memory usage Hi I have SBS2K as my server with a vast amount of space for files etc. I have a separate partition that is 10GB in size for exchange. Exchange has almost used this up and I have asked uses to remove e-mail that are no longer needed. The total loss in the end was 2.36 GB made free. but exchange has not released this from the partition and still says it is in use and keeps growing. Do I have a misconception of exchange on how it uses physical memory? I feel very sure that the memory is supposed to be released back as free memory but it has not.     - Memory usage I recently installed SBS 2000 and have not been impressed by its memory usage. I started with 512MB ram in the server and the memory usage went up to about 600MB. Exchange, ISA, IIS and SQL all using large chunks of memory (do I need IIS, I am not hosting a website?). I increased the RAM to 1GB and now the server is running at 1.6GB! I am running SBS 2003 RC, final version. There are a
couple weird issues and I think they related to a problem
the server management consol. Whenever I open the consol I
get "The page cannot be found". If I enter localhost
address bar in IE the same problem. I can ping localhost
in a command line although.

Hi Ray,

Are you seeing any errors in the app or system log relating to IISADMIN or
W3SVC? If so, what are they? Also, in IIS Manager, does the Default Web
Site show as being stopped?
