    - Public Folders contacts I have another newbie public folders question. I would like authorized users to be able to add global contacts to a public folder. I logon to a client PC as administrator and open the address book. When I try to add a new contact to the public folders I receive a message stating "You cannot create entries for this address book". So I look in AD and by default there is an "Internet Newsgroups" public folder already installed. First of all I cannot see this folder from Outlook. Second, Under the client permissions option for this folder the "Folder Contact" option is grayed out. So even if I could see the folder I assume I would not be able to add a contact. You get the picture... So what am I doing wrong? All I want to do is provide my users with a public folder to store their global contacts. Be able to see this folder in Outlook and provide security to specific users to maintain the folder. Seems simple enough.... Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Don Tag: RPC Tag: 130998

    - Question about KB Article 292822 and DNS Well as far as I can see we are still having to use the registry edits even on SP1 integrated versions of SBS 2000. I'm not too thrilled about still having to do these edits by hand but hey, at least it works. My question is regarding this section: 1.e "you need to create two A records in DNS: one in the root of the domain for the domain name (for example, a blank host record in your company.local zone), and an A record for your Global Catalog (for example, your SBS server) in gc._msdcs.domain name.com." What is correct for the A Record in the gc section: Should the A record be the host name "myserver" and IP address of the SBS2K box or should it be (same as parent folder) and the IP of the server, i.e.: myserver A 192.168.12.1 or (same as parent folder) A 192.168.0.1 Thanks, Aydin Tag: RPC Tag: 130993

    - Public Folders Error I am configuring a new install of SBS 2000. After running the IIS configuration tool from the ToDo list, I am unable to access my Exchange "Public Folders" in AD. When I click the public folders icon I receive the following message. The connection was refused. Ensure that your HTTP virtual servers are all started and check that the WWW service is running. ID no. c103b401 Exchange System Manager I have confirmed the virtual servers and WWW service is running. If I go back into the IIS configuration tool and click "Restore Defaults", I am then able to access the public folders. Can anybody explain to me what is happening here and how I should procede...     - No keyboard/mouse after netfinity manager installation I installed the applications that came with my Netfinity 5500 M20 server, ie. netfinity manager and advance manager, scsi management program. After installation, it asked me to reboot. After reboot, it took forever for the system to boot and then I had no mouse and keyboard at console to use.     - trend micro hi I am using a dial up connection to the internet using sbs 2000. I have found out that trend micro messaging suite does not dial up directtly to get updates.     - modem is not disconnecting after use Hi i have setup our sbs 2000 server as per kb article re: one nic card and dial up connection to the internet. I have got an internal ESS superlink +M modem. I did not have the original drivers for this modem and found one on the net. After clients have finished using mail or internet explorer, the modem does not disconnect. It only disconnects after faxes are sent. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is so? My idle time for the modem is set to 5 minutes but the modem still will not disconnect. I had put in the wrong scope for dhcp and had to give my clients static ip addresses but i have since fixed this and they no longer need to have a static ip address. Do i need to run the icw after this step? This is the only thing i did not do as i was not sure. thanks again Tag: RPC Tag: 130969

    - Mac issues in a SmBusSvr network I have recently assumed the responsibilities of a SmBusSvr2000 office. They are graphic intensive and have 6 Mac's for design purposes. They also have 17 PC's as workstations for other daily activity. The Mac's share files via a Mac volume on the SmBusSvr - no issues. The Mac volume is for sharing of graphics production files that all are working on - no issues here. Owners want "all data" on "all" systems backed up nightly to a separate "Backup Server". Problem is - none of the Mac's can be browsed via the Server. I seem unable to map any Mac's Hard drive. So other than the Mac Volume share, I can not see anything Mac related. How do I bring the Mac's into "My Network Places" so they are viewable ?? How do I set up the nightly backups of the Mac hard drives ? The Application Log, however, is full of: Event Type: Warning Event Source: MSExchangeMU Event Category: General Event ID: 1040 Date: 9/18/2003 Time: 7:59:45 PM User: N/A Computer: SERVER Description: Metabase Update failed replication 5 times with error 800cc801. Please change the diagnostic logging level of MSExchangeMU to 'minimum' or greater to find the source of the problem. I have turned the logging level to "Max", but there is nothing showing up in the log. Is there another log to view? Any assistance would be appreciated.     - Printing and Terminal Services I'm having a problem printing with terminal services. We have a program, OMS, that we run from terminal services. We want to install a Point of Sale retail location offsite. The OMS program prints directly to LPT1 and I cannot seem to get TS to redirect that print job to the workstation's LPT1 port which has the recipt printer hook up.     - Multiple Static IPs I need to assign multiple static IPs to my SBS box and also to three member servers within the network. I'm not so hot with the IP routing technicalities but would appreciate any help. This could be more directed to the Cisco 801 router we're using rather than the SBS but I'm not too sure. Anyway, here's the config: Static IP range A.B.C.225 to A.B.C.238 Internet -> 128k ISDN -> Cisco 801 Router (Int IP 192.168.1.1) -> External NIC 192.168.1.2 External NIC -> Internal NIC on 10.0.0.2 I need to map an IP to the SQL 2000 server (within the SBS box), and and IP to each of three member servers.     - Reject spam using Reverse Lookup Recently I have noticed a lot of ISPs using reverse dns lookups to block spammers. I know I can perform a reverse lookup in exchange manager. But doesn't this just identify if it resolved correctly or not? How do I set up my exchange server to REJECT emails that don't resolve correctly. I know there may be some legitimate email that could be affected but it looks like it would block a ton of spam from actually getting to my server. I already block domains using exchange manager and the rest with GFI MailEssentials. They both work great. However, I would prefer to reject the emails that don't resolve, too.     - SMTP Virtual Server problems Hi All, This is my first post to this group. I have had a SBS 2000 installation running for a few months now, but every now and again (maybe 4-5 times a week) the outbound messages seem to get stuck in the "destination unreachable queue". Once one message gets stuck in there everything else seems to pile up behind it. All SMTP mail is forwarded to our ISP via smart host setting (also tried with ISP's ip address instead of FQDN). The other error I get in the event log is event 4003 the domain "whateveritis.com" is currently unreachable" . This relates to the domain that I was trying to get an email message to in the first place and doesn't seem to matter what the email address is. I can send a mail to an email address one day, and maybe an hour later if I send to the same address that succeeded before it goes straight to the destination unreachable queue and locks up all other messages until I restart the smtp service. If I restart the SMTP service all messages are delivered. I found this article on the KB 289808 but my question is this. Have many of you SBS Admins out there had to do this disabling 8 bit MIME? It seems quite complex and I am just wondering if anybody else has had to do it. Any other ideas would be gratefully accepted? thx in advance Andrew Tag: RPC Tag: 130904

    - OT: Win XP Strange Display Issue I have a new WinXP workstation where, when you drag a desktop shortcut with the mouse, the shortcut does not appear to move. Then when you release the mouse button, the shortcut appears at the new location. It appears as if you are just moving the mouse, until you release the button - then the shortcut disappears at the old location and reappears at the new. I could easily ignore this, but it annoys the user. Anyone seen this before? This is a dell dimension 4600 with XP Pro, pretty much in its out-of-the-box configuration.     - ProSeries Accounting on SBS2K I have a new client with 3 users who use ProSeries Accounting from Intuit. All 3 users were created with the standard user template on SBS 2000. There is a feature in PS that allows users to transfer a past clients personal data info from say year 2002 into the new year 2003 for new tax season. The problem is it only works when the users have Domain Admin rights. Intuit says a couple things. First they say, this feature should only be done by an admin. Then they say, permissions on the server or the workstations must be wrong. The Workstations are Win XPP, with local admin rights and Domain User rights. ProSeries was installed into the Company folder which has full share and security permissions/rights to everyone. I have checked & rechecked and can't find what's wrong. I think it is ProSeries. Anyone dealt with ProSeries before? I have installed to different shared folder but same thing. I have upped the users to Power User status still broke. Only Domain Admin works and that won't happen.     - Cannot run Add/Remove Programs on SBS 2000 I have SBS with SP1 for SBS and SP3 for 2000 installed. During installing some MicroSoft patches the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel quit working. I just finished installing SP4 hoping that would fix the problem. It did not. I found Microsoft Article 323496 referencing this problem. It cuts off at SP2 and really doesn't offer a fix. How can I fix this problem? I can run anything else out of Control Panel, but if I click on Add/Remove Programs nothing happens. The same for if I run the executable referenced in 323496. Any Ideas? Tag: RPC Tag: 130883

    - VPN clients with wrong IPaddress When I make a VPN connection to a newly build SBS, I do not get an IPaddress within the servers range the Internal Adapter is: 192.168.16.4 The External adapter is: xx.xx.xx.118 The Routers gateway address is: xx.xx.xx.113 Internet from within the Lan works Ping from within the Lan to outside works.     - Slow logon We are experiencing problems logging on to SBS2000. After resetting DHCP settings to adjust the DNS server (router) like we've done in the past, we now have problems logging on. It used to take 5-7 seconds, now it takes up to 18 minutes to log on to SBS2000.     - Setting up VPN and Internet Access - newbie I've only just loaded our SBS and we're trying to configure it for: 1) LAN internet access 2) VPN access 3) multiple inbound static IPs via Cisco Router We connect via a Cisco 801 to the net. The SBS is dual-homed, internal NIC on 10.0.0.2 255.255.255.0 and external NIC on 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 I have used the wizards to set up VPN and net access but they seem to configure one or the other: either VPN or Net access. I can't seem to get both. Trying to connect via VPN gives me a "no certificate" message from a W2K Pro client. Any and all help appreciated, or point me to a link that will explain everything!! :-)) I used to run 4.5 in the same configuration but I don't understand the routing and remote access server.     - New SBS Install Problems Hi I have recently set up two new SBS 2000 servers on identical hardware and am getting strange results:- Both servers are Fujitsu RX300 servers c/w 2.6 GHZ Xeons, and 1gb RAM and 36Gb RAID 1 HD. The servvers also have dual 1gb Broadcom ethernet cards built in. On server 1 and 2 when restarting I get an error stating that there is a duplicate name on the network and to use nbtstat -n. On server 2 when i try to run the SBSconsole config for internet it tells me that one of the lan cards is disabled, to renable then run the wizard again. neither card is disabled and i can ping the i/p's of both cards. Both machines are not on the network at the same time and they are set up as follows.: Server1 Machine name: Main Domain :Opera Card 1 Details:- IP 10.0.0.5 sub 255.0.0.0 Gateway 10.0.0.1 DNS 10.0.0.5 Card 2 Details IP 10.0.0.6 sub 255.0.0.0 Gateway 10.0.0.1 DNS 10.0.0.5 Server2 Machine name: HYDRASBS01 Domain :hydraclean Card 1 Details:- IP 10.0.0.2 sub 255.0.0.0 Gateway 10.0.0.1 DNS 10.0.0.2 Card 2 Details IP 10.0.0.3 sub 255.0.0.0 Gateway 10.0.0.1 DNS 10.0.0.2 Any one any ideas?     - Dedicated Dial-In Best Practices? We have staff who travel frequently; often to parts of Asia where broadband is unknown (like some hotels in NY/LA :). BigBoss has gotten us an 800# for dedicated dial-in because he can't figure out how to work MSN, AOL, WTnet, etc. Travelers currently VPN in -- if they can get on the Internet -- no problem there. I do have a few questions on direct dial-in to the server though: 1. Hardware: internal or external modem? Any recommendation for compatibility with SBS? 2. Shared Fax: will sharing the 800# with direct dial-in conflict with us implementing shared fax (of course, other than busy signals)? This will be the first modem we attach to the server and might as well use shared fax. 3. Any special security issues for hackers randomly dialing 800#'s looking for open modems? 4. Any recommended articles? I've read the MSFT technet stuff, but it is more "dollars" without the "sense".     - Firewall Client and Permission Errors I have a client with three workstations and a small business server. Recently one workstation was having problems accessing the shared network drives. After uninstalling the firewall client it can access the network drives fine. I have tried static and dynamic IP's manually setting the ISA server in the client configuration and having it automaticly detect. Nothing that I change makes a difference. I also tried reinstalling the firewall client and it can access the drives fine until I restart the machine and then it fails. First it comes up with a logon screen and none of the usernames and passwords work, not even the server admin password. And I get an error saying that I don't have permission to access the drives.     - Shared Fax Service - Retries Exceeded When I attempt to send a fax from a client PC through the Microsoft Shared Fax Service I receive the following error in the Application Event Viewer Section Event ID : 32079 "An error was encountered while preparing to send the fax. The service will not attempt to resend the fax. Please close other applications before resending." If I look in the shared fax outbox, the status of the fax I tried to send shows 'Retries exceeded' I have reset the number of retries on the server to the maximum and stopped and restarted bot the Fax server, and restarted the server a number of times but still cannot send faxes.     - Opening a port on ISA We use a piece of Software over the web which entails having a certain port open, RDP TCP port 3389 to be exact. When we try to connect to the web address whilst connected to the network Proxy we are able to connect to the web address but unable to open the terminal services applet for this software. All that opens is a blank white Terminal services Applet Window. However, if we logon to the same pc as a standalone user rather than part of the domain and then connect via a dial up connection the Temrinal services over the web works fine.     - telnet to my router.... as this ng suggested me some weeks ago, I removed raspppoe from my sbs server, I bought a router that supports pppoe protocol, and I connected it to the second nic of the machine, run ICW and everything worked fine..... All the configuration of the router (ip, username, password) has been made using the software provided with the router, but if I want to set port forwarding (ie to connect remotely to my server) I have to open a telnet session to the router.....but when I digit from the prompt "telnet 192.168.1.254" (the router's ip), after about a minute I receive an error "unable to open a connection to host....". I tried to start manually the telnet service on the sbs2000 box, but nothing changed...... I'm sure the router works correctly, since if I connect it temporarily to a win xp notebook (with the only nic configured as the server's secondary), I'm able to open the telnet session.....but I'd like to work with the router connected to SBS..... can you help me??? thnx bye Tag: RPC Tag: 130791

    - MS Retail Mgmt System Pls excuse this posting here, but this was the closest MS newsgroup I could find...my company purchased MS's RMS (Retail Mgmt Sys) software. We run Lawson financials. And now we discovered that MS RMS does not have any standard import/export/scheduling functionality, APIs, etc. for getting data into/from the SQL Server database it uses.     - Spam issue Greetings Everyone, My SBS 2000 is setup with a static ip address and a registered domain for my email. I tryed sending an email to a client this morning and recieved a return. Here's what is said. Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: Good Morning Kara Sent: 9/18/2003 8:04 AM The following recipient(s) could not be reached: ggentile@tampabay.rr.com on 9/18/2003 8:04 AM The destination system is currently not accepting any messages. Please retry at a later time. If that fails, contact your system administrator. <pappabear.MadisonInformationServices.local #5.3.0 smtp;553 5.3.0 Mail from 66.14.218.107 rejected, see http://spamhaus.org/sbl> My question is how do I check to see if my SMTP Exchange Server on the SBS is being used to send out spam from my server, so I can get myself fixed and removed from any spam block list. Is there a way for me to close any open loops within this system I am not aware of??? I am some what familiar with the Exchange Server and am the only person on it running the email configurations. Please help me. I need to get my SBS off the spam block lists. Otherwise I will not be able to communicate with everyone. Thank you in advance for you time and cooperation.     - contemplating SBS for a small high school greetings, would SBS (2K or 2K3) be a decent choice small high school with 40 total computers, 20 of which are a in a student lab? the available h/w is an older dual processor Dell (P3/700MhZ processors) with 256MB RAM and 20GB (RAID) disk. I have noticed that when faxes come in that the Administrator and anyone else with Admin rights can see all the faxes that have come via the Fax Console but a standard user cannot.     - SBS and D-LINK 300 ADSL MODEM - HELP!! I have tried every trick in the book to get d-link 300 adsl modem happening here with dual NIC and ISA (SBS Internet connect wizard). I have made all changes to LAT and stuff to no avail. I can ping the modem and it is connected to ISP ok.. Just no traffic through ISA. It says gateway cant find IP address of WEB pages.     - TSAdmin connection to SBS via 56K Modem I would like to set-up to TSAdmin connect to my SBS. The office and my home are both in rural areas were there is only 56K dial-up internet access available. The server has two USR V-Everything external modems with one set for fax only and the other set for internet only. Can either of these be shared with dial-in or do I need another one? If sahrable which should I use? I beleive that I'll need to set permissions to allow dial-in on the server, Install the Remote Desktop Client at home and set-up a new connection at home. Does the Remote Desktop Client initialte the dial-up and connection? Is there a link that anyone can provide with a step by step guide to make sure I don't miss anything. On my final install & set-up of the SBS box I has issues with the dial-up connection and internet access that took a while to resolve. The bax has run without any trouble for months now AND I DO NOT WANT TO SCREW-UP MY CONNECTION AGAIN!!! whoops, a bad memory. I was going to try this back in July, but chickened out. I would really benefit from being able to connect to the server like I was sitting at it on occassion after hours, month ends etc. This would save me rather the 30 minute one way drive at least once a week when I would like to check something. If in the same connection I can access my workstation like I am sitting at it that would be a bonus since I could run various reports that take a long time before I leave for the office, they would be done when i get there.     - Copy email to POOP3 account I would be grateful if someone vould give me an insight into how I automatically copy a Client's emails to a POP3 account that they can access when away from the office?     - Help - Server will not log off / reboot / respond to Ctrl + Alt + Del Strange one this, never had it before. Fully patched SP'd and complete SBS2000 install with BENT, and a few GFI products. Our server will not respond to Ctrl + Alt + Del to get the security menu (task manager etc) up, nor will it log off, nor will it reboot or shut down, seems fully functional in all other ways no other probems apparent, nothing odd showing in SBS Admin console server status either Have tried using the shutdown.exe to remotely reboot and locally reboot, count down is reached but nothing happens.     - ISA blocking web access(HTTP) I have recently installed SBS 2000, and am having problems acessing websites. The following message is displayed in the web browser "403 forbidden. The ISA server denies the specified URL (12202)". However, this only happens with HTTP, if it is HTTPS there is no problem.     - CuteFTP & NTLWorld Hi, I'm using CuteFTP to connect to various sites via SBS2000 and ISA with no problems. I'm trying to set up a connection to NTL World for a new site - but can not get a connection. It gets to - Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message... and just sits there until it times out - I have tried different settings etc I have ISA setup for ports 20/21 and have checked the ISA logs for any problems.     - Trouble Accessing IIS from the Internet Hi, I have an on-going problem and as such have not found a solution. SBS SP1a, 2 NIC setup (internal and external IP's on seperate NIC's) and I cannot access OWA, TSWEB, ADMIN web, PRINTERS or any other folder in IIS from the internet. I can access the above mentioned on the LAN using internal and external IP addresses (http://server/exchange or http://212.32.58.xxx/exchange), but when I try and connect through the internet I can see in the IE status bar that the page is loading, eventually timing out and displaying 'website cannot be found'. I don't even get prompted to enter a username / password. I have checked ISA and IIS settings as per MS, IIS is listening on the internal network, ISA is configured to pass all incoming requests on port 80 to IIS. I have checked folder permissions in Windows Explorer and IIS snap-in. Authentication is configured as basic and integrated. Any suggestions would be appreciated.     - Portscan alerts from DNS server ip Every now and then I get ISA portscan alerts coming from our isp's dns servers. dns works fine otherwise. Isp's dns is configured as forwarder to dns server on sbsserver. Clients send their queries to sbs box, they get the setting from dhcp, so no client tries to get directly to ips's dns. What is wrong here? Can it be that sometimes the response comes so late that the isa has already closed the dynamic return port? I don't have an idea, but one of the servers I oversee had this thing come
in last night on the server and I had patched it last month. The only thing
I can think of is that a system on the network was infected with it and then
got hooked up to the network.

I think it is one of the laptops that they hook up at a university when they
teach and then bring it back into the office, but I ain't got a hold of them
laptops yet.
