Upgrade to Excel 2007. You will get thousands of columns and 1,000,000 rows
now. (I know that may not be an option, and of course once you create a
spreadsheet with >256 columns, thos columns wiull be truncated when saved as
old Excel version. Basically you will not be able to share.)

Excel 2007 has 16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows. Previous versions have
256 columns and 65,536 rows or less. You cannot configure Excel to change
that.
