    - A DotNet Severe Limitation ? I believe I have found a severe limitation of DotNet, with respect to hosting Windows Form Controls in WebPages. It appears this is only possible when the web is configured on Port 80. Any other port and the control will not display. After a couple of days of searching the newsgroups/various forums I have found other postings requesting information on this anomaly yet nobody has found a solution.     - Images in PropertyGrid I'm using a PropertyGrid and one of the properties I'm displaying is of type Image. The grid allows the user to pick an image from a file using a standard image browser. However, what it returns back to the property grid is in raw Image format, which does not include the filename - but I want to persist the selection as the filename that the user picked.     - DrawItem lost for MenuItem in MDI app Found a problem: a Form for MDI app contains MenuItems with OwnerDraw=true and added DrawItem and MeasureItem functions. The form contains a Child Form with a normal menu. If you open a few child forms and close them - the OwnerDrawn menu on the parent form disappears - just a blank rectangle.     - Iterating through forms in an application I want to be able to reference an open form in my application. I thought this would be easy by iterating through all forms in the application but I can't figure out how to do this. I have tried using the Form.mdiChildren as recommended in another post but this did not return any results. This does not surprise me as all forms in the application are forms in their own right.     - DTS packages run from .Net fail I've asked this question before, but failed to get an answer that made sense to me.... I have some code that I stole from MSKB article 321525 that I'm using in a windows forms app (framework 1.1, VS 2003) that I'm having some problems with. Basically, if I try using it on a machine that only has the framework installed, then it fails intermittently. If I use the code on a machine that has had SQL installed onto it, then it works perfectly. Running a file monitor over the machine that works shows that it is actually using the dts files (e.g. dtspump.dll) installed under c:\program files\microsoft sql server instead of just using framework files. It generally works without referencing the dll files the first time after an install or update. Could someone confirm that I really shouldn't need the locally installed dts files - and, if I do, explain how it works after an install without looking at the dlls. and Has anyone else had the same kind of problem with 321525?     - Label not showing up on gui form called from within load handler of other form Hi: I'm trying to setup a simple message box that displays a message (like "Exiting Applicaton....). It's a simple form with only one label on it, displayed in the center. The label's text is set after initializecomponents is called from the form's constructor. I'm trying to use this in other forms. Right now, in the load handler for another form, I have a warning message. If the user chooses no, I'd like to have the display message show on the screen for a couple of seconds before exiting app. I create an instance of the message form from within the other form's load handler and call Show(). The form displays on the screen, but where the label should be, is only a white rectangular area, with no text at all.     - Security violation when trying to bring up help Hi, Thanks to the MVPs for all the help the last few days. You guys really saved me. The problem I am currently having is that I am doing the following (C#): Help.ShowHelp(this, "help.htm"); This brings up an HTML page that contains the very simple help information for the application. This help file gets installed in the same directory as the application. It works well on my development machine, but when I run it on a test machine (Windows98 with the .NET 1.1 framework) I get a security exception. It appears that the default security settings for the 1.1 framework do not allow this. So how can I bring up a single HTML help page without requiring my user to change the security permissions (not practical)? The error information is included below.     - disabled textbox I have a texbox which can be in one of three states in my application. 1. enabled, 2. disabled, 3. read only, with a different color background. When switching between these states, going from #3 to #1, I set the backcolor in my program to System.Drawing.SystemColors.Window which seems to be the default back color for windows forms controls. However, once I set the backcolor manually, when I disable the textbox its background doesn't change to gray the way it normally does. It just stays with the backcolor I assigned to it, which is white. Is there a way of assigning the default back color to a control, or undoing the backcolor assignment? Thanks for any help.     - Problems drawing to a 1bpp (indexed) image. I've been tasked with writing a control for displaying previews from scan software we use. These are scans of plan drawings and are roughly 11000x8000, 1bpp CCITT compressed TIF graphics. I can used Image/Bitmap.FromFile to load them correctly, for display purposes I am creating a scaled render of the original image (so that paints don't have to perform scaling/sampling on every draw) which gets costly enough that we don't want to do it Problem; I modified the code this morning to use the PixelFormat of the source image in creating this scaled image, now I need to draw the original image to this new image. But Graphics.FromImage() throws an Exception for our TIF images because the target image is an indexed image, and .NET doesn't seem to support this I found one other post on the newsgroups related to this problem, and Microsoft's solution was to draw to a 24 or 32bpp image and then (for the original author's purposes) save to an indexed format (presumably GIF being that the post dealt with an 8bpp graphic) That would work great (or well enough) for the original author's problem, but let's do some math 11000*8000=88,000,000 elements/pixel Not knowing how the Image class was implemented for holding 1bpp graphics, I assume this requires 11,000,000 Bytes, ~10742.2 KB or ~10.4 M This we could easily accomodate (memory requirements would be low for this image) According to the post I originally found, the only obvious solution is to create a target graphic that is NOT indexed. Going back to the math this would require 88,000,000*4 Bytes = 352,000,000 B, ~343750 KB or ~ 335.7 M Obviously we can't do this. It's almost obvious we need a graphics object that can work with an indexed image My opening pointed out I am drawing to a scaled surface, so my target isn't really 335MB, it's around 30MB (roughly 8% of the physical 'pixel' size of the document). I must display these, but even this allocation is unsatisfactory, especially since my control will allow zooming in to the original document size of 100%, making the scaled image the same size as the source image Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe there is a way to scale the image without creating the new image object and drawing it myself? On the same note, can Microsoft drop the $ into the developer time it would take to make a graphics object that could work with indexed/paletted surfaces? This seems like something a fair percentage of developers might need, and if available, would obviously use, so why wouldn't it be done already (except to save time, or meet some design goal/model I may not be aware of) Thanks in advance for any possible solutions, I'll poke around and look for some solutions and post what I find, we were really hoping to nix the sampling/scaling on every draw (panning code) since it was causing notable lag in the application (being that the original document has a massive resolution on it, even a 2ghz machine with 1gb of RAM takes effort) - Shau Tag: windows authentication Tag: 66443

    - Strange Behavior with .showdialog() Greetings, Take the following example of a form and a form launched from within it. Dim frmCredit as new frmCredit frmCredit.showdialog() Now, in the frmCredit, you have an OK box which does the saving of data, cleanup, validation, etc.... End Sub Problem: When this validation fails, when the exit sub is called, it closes the entire form, rather than exiting just the cmdOK_Click event. This then puts you back at the original form which would create, what I'd term as an unpleasant user experience. However, should you change the original call to: "frmCredit.Show()" when the data validation fails and the exit sub is called, it returns to the frmCredit as expected. What gives? Anybody work around this with the showdialog? I'd like to use this call, as it is imperative and the underlying form relies on the data that is input on the frmCredit.     - Exception on Form restore I am experiencing an odd issue when my form is minimized. Upon activation, my form refreshes some data within a DataGrid control. No exception is thrown until the form is minimized, then restored from the task bar. Upon restore, an exception is thrown in the Activated event.     - VS.NET 2003 Windows Toolbar: How to center text without image? I am trying to create a toolbar in a Winforms application that contains only the Text on the button without an image. It appears there is no way to tell the button to draw itself without an image and center the text. For example, all I want is a button with the letter 'R' on it in the center of a small button on the toolbar; however, the 'R' is in the lower half of the button and the button looks to be anticipating the addition of an image in the upper half.     - Simulate Form's ShowDialog with other control (threading?) I want to extend a ListBox by adding a ShowDialog method that will wait (block) the main thread until the user has selected an item in the ListBox (i.e. similar to Form.ShowDialog). I'm not clear about what threads are running behind the scenes in C# (GUI, etc.). How can I block the main thread while allowing the GUI thread and also (if needed) a separate thread to handle the ListBox events. Once the user has selected an item or has selected outside the ListBox, I would unblock the main thread and return the result I already have this working by putting a ListBox inside of a Form, but the dialog (of ShowDialog) takes focus away from the main application when shown (application title is out of focus since dialog has focus). If I can duplicate the blocking mechanism of the ShowDialog method, I will be able to keep all focus within the application. Note: I use Capture to handle mouse clicks outside of the ListBox.     - MDI App Timeout I have an MDI app that I need to timeout after a certain amount of time, say 30 minutes. I am looking for a way to make sure that if the user selects a childform or types something in the childform or selects a menu item or even just clicks on something in the app it will not timeout. But if the user minimizes the app and does nothing with it for the preset time or just walks away from their PC for that longer than the preset time that the app will give them a warning that the application is closing. So far I have looked at trying to do mouse clicks and keyboard presses but I can't seem to figure out how to do it without having to write something in every childwindow. I have also looked at Application.Idle but it seems that if something else is going on on the machine like I am working with another application the Applicaiton never seems to go idle until all typeing and mouse clicks have stopped all together. Has anyone come up with a way to do something like this? The timer part is easy of course my biggest issue is how to catch all mouse clicks within the parent form as well as keystrokes but ignore everything outside the app. TIA -Stanley Tag: windows authentication Tag: 66402

On 99% of machines I tested, the file is correctly located in the applications startup directory. On one machine however, it looks for the file in c:\winnt\system32.     - Anchor/dock property I have a forms application which has many controls such as buttons,labels,listviews,text boxes etc. If you set the window size to maximum size so that it would expand to the size of the screen the controls tend to move without any proposion. So then I used anchor and the dock property.     - Designtime turns to Runtime when copy-pasted... This is a really bad behavior of the design time, but I am not sure if it can be avoided in some way. Basically: I created a custom LicenseProvider that checks the context for the UsageMode (DesignTime or Runtime). Depending on that it uses a design time algorithm or a runtime one to get the license. However, if you select a control and then use copy + paste (either by keyboard or context menu) the pasted control has the context set to Runtime... This is really bad... Here's how to replicate: create a user control and a LicenseProvider. In the license provider's GetLicense method put a message box to display the context.UsageMode. Add the control to the toolbar, drag and drop it on the design surface. Then select it and press Ctrl+c and then Ctrl+v. You will see that the second control will show "Runtime"...     - custom design UI I am currently working on an application where we decided to have a customized look and feel (as opposed to the standard Windows UI). I took an approach using graphics to define windows borders and buttons, etc... but I'm not satisfied at all with the performance. Windows take a long time to display making this interface less than friendly. The graphics for the windows borders are placed on the form using PictureBox controls. Graphics are GIFs ranging from 1K to 5K with 90% of graphics between 1k and 2K. Am I taking the wrong approach? What would be a better way to go about this?     - Possibly strange behavior with ToolTip. I have a .NET application that seems to have a really strange bug. The following code represents a form that adds a control (in this case, a label) to a form every few seconds. The code is similar to the application I'm working on. As my application receives data, it will add or remove user controls which represents the data on the fly When I create the control I set its tool tip. When the control is added to the form, the form takes focus on the screen. This is a really annoying feature as I don't want the user to work with another application and have my application pop up in the foreground every time my application receives new data. The really strange part is that this behavior goes away when I remove the code to set the control's tool tip.     - How can my application determine when the system is shutting down? I am currently developing a taskbar-icon based program which normally has no open windows. I understand that there is a Microsoft.Win32 event that is supposed to notify the application, but this event fails to fire when the computer is shut down. I have Windows XP. By not knowing when the computer is shutting down, my application stays in memeory when the computer tries to shut down, so all proccesess except the app close. To avoid this, you must manually close the program before shutting down the computer. I hope that I can find a way to make my program more user-friendly in this respect.     - Single Instance of App Per User I have been asked to make sure that a WinForm app can only have one instance and this would not be an issue if that was the only part. I could simply loop through the processes and see if the process name is already in the collection. However, the second part of the request was to make sure that if someone is running the app and someone else does the quick login or uses Terminal Services that they be able to run the app under their network ID.     - Changed dataset values mystery This, to me, screams 'Bug!!!!', but before I get into support calls to Microsoft type stuff, does anyone have any suggestions about how the following can happen.... VS 2003 using VB.Net. I have a Windows form that is used for displaying data from a dataview. The dataview sorts a dataset, and also filters it so that only records relating to the current user get shown. In the particular situation where I know I can recreate my problem, the dataview contains 4 records. There is a field called Nominee. For the record with the reference AG 11 (i.e. the key field), the nominee is NMS. So... DealDS1.Tables("Main").Rows.Find("AG 11").Item("Nominee")="NMS" I now want to import data into the dataset (...fields are set so that the data will also fall into the dataview as well....). I read the first line of data from a spreadsheet, add a new row onto DealDS1.Tables("Main"), set the values of the fields, and then add the datarow onto the dataset. Fine. No problem (normally). Again going back to the spreadsheet that I know makes it go wrong, this works up until the 6th row. Then this happens.... Read the 6th row of the spreadsheet. Add a new row onto the dataset.... newrow = DealDS1.Tables("Main").NewRow Set the values of the fields. newrow.Item("Blah")="Whatever" for various fields Stepping through this code I now look at the value of DealDS1.Tables("Main").Rows.Find("AG 11").Item("Nominee") and it's NMS Next line of code adds the row onto the dataset.... DealDS1.Tables("Main").Rows.Add(newrow) (the new row as a key value of AG 26) And after that line DealDS1.Tables("Main").Rows.Find("AG 11").Item("Nominee") is now NMA I have no code that I can see that is getting triggered by adding the new row.
