 - taskbar grouping in XP/Home of open windows of one app when minmized ? .NET 2.0 C# WinXP or Home SP2, all latest updates ... NOT an MDI application. In the scenario discussed here there is no "main form" : window management is being done in code, and the first open form being closed does not automatically close all the other forms (of course all opened forms have their Form_Closing event handled in a way that ensures the Application exits when there are no more open forms). When I create a number of independent application windows at runtime (i.e., several winforms whose Parent == null), at a certain number of windows open when they are all minimized they are "grouped" in the taskbar and certain menu options appear when their task menu group is context-clicked like "cascade," "tile horizontal," etc. From my observations I think the underlying Windows manager is "deciding" when to group them all together on the task bar when the number of "slots" available on the task bar is exceeded in width. On a practical level, I don't see this effect until I mimimize about four windows simultaneously. I was wondering if there was any API to access the tiling functionality that this presents for your own purposes when Forms are NOT all minimized to the taskbar. thanks, Bill Tag: service pack 2 Tag: 116452

 - Advise on sending messages between remote computers I have a requirement to develop a solution that will allow specific users to send a quick canned message (including the senders user name) to other users when they feel they are in a threatening situation. The message would go to a short list of predetermined recipients. All computers are on the same domain. The current solution uses net send but we are in the process of migrating to Vista where net send will no longer be an option.  - display data in gridview Hi I am using vs 2005 and have a simple windows application. I put a gridview on a form and used the wizard to build a connection string (the wizard placed it in the app.config file). For the dataset I selected a stored procedure that requires no input. I tested the connection and it worked. It looks like the wizard created an associated dataset as well.  - Pictureboxes moving on their own volition when form is displayed I have a user control that has this structure from top to bottom: Label1 Label2 PictureBox1 Label3 PictureBoxes2 through 11 All of the controls are anchored Top,Left. Pictureboxes 2 through 11 are right next to each other in the designer, with 1 pixel of space between them. This user control is added to a form that has this structure: Form TopLevelSplitContainer TopLevelSplitContainer.Panel1 other stuff TopLevelSplitContainer.Panel2 justAPanel myUserControl aDGV Depending on something happening in the background, it displays the UserControl or the DGV. The problem is when I the UserControl is displayed in my form, it spaces out pictureboxes 2 through 11 and ends up chopping off the right side of the last picturebox. I am adding the UserControl programmatically, but even if I just drop it on the justAPanel in the designer, it does the same thing. If I don't anchor the controls on MyUserControl at all, they don't spread correctly vertically, and they are actually wider horizontally than they would be if I anchored them. When added programmatically to the form, the usercontrol is set to dock Left and Top. If I don't dock it, it seems to center it, which chops off both sides of the usercontrol. Any ideas why my controls are being rendered differently in run mode than they are in design mode? My containing form is a user control, too, by the way, which does sit in an actual Form that has a minimum size and a default size that this panel should fit into if it weren't mucking up my picturebox locations. The reason I have 10 picture boxes is because each one has its own click event. Just thought I'd throw that in there before someone says "Why don't you just combine the picture boxes into one?".  - Resize DisplayRectangle on TableLayoutPanel row deletion I am using TableLayoutPanel to dynamically add and remove Controls to my form. The TableLayoutPanel is set to auto scroll. As Controls are added the DisplayRectangle height grows but when the Controls are removed the DisplayRectangle doesn't shrink. This causes extra space on the bottom of the from. Any suggestions on how to fix this.  - Q: Is there a Winforms "accordion" already? Hi everyone. I'd like to have a "accordion" type effect in one of my applications. You can see what I'm talking about here: http://www.asp.net/AJAX/AjaxControlToolkit/Samples/Accordion/Accordion.aspx Just like that, except for Winforms desktop applications. Googling doesn't show anything (one commerical product?), but maybe this concept is called something different in the desktop world? I'm guessing it won't be too hard to write a simple version myself, but no point in reinventing the accordion if it's already out there under a different name. Any suggestions are appreciated.  - ReportViewer Control SetParameters Exception After Report Export ReportViewer.LocalReport.SetParameters() fails after a report has been exported to a file location that no longer exists (media removed, invalid path, etc.). Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.LocalProcessingException: An error occurred during local report processing. ---> Microsoft.Reporting.DefinitionInvalidException: The definition of the report 'Main Report' is invalid. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.ReportProcessing.ReportProcessingException: An unexpected error occurred in Report Processing. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException: Cannot execute a program. The command being executed was "c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET \Framework\v2.0.50727\vbc.exe" /noconfig @"C:\Documents and Settings \...\Temp\_c0gtdjg.cmdline". To demonstrate you will need a win forms app with a main form and a second form with the ReportViewer control. A button on the main form launches the report form and populates the control with data and sets report parameters. Run the app, navigate to the report form and display the report. Now Export to PDF to some sort of removable media. Close the report form but not the application. Remove the media. Navigate back to the report form. The above exception occurs when attempting to SetParameters(). I can catch the exception, but I can not figure out a way to cleanly recover. The only recovery is to exit the application and go back in. It will attempt to access the non-existent media, but it doesn't throw an exception. Thoughts? Please????? Thanks!  - send page by email ( is there just no way ?!? ) "know" i did this once long ago, but for the life of me i can neither recall how nor find it on the web. any help would be greatly appriciated.  - How to prevent window activation when tray icon clicked? Hello, I have tray icon application I'm planning to develop in C# .Net 2.0. What I want to do is have it so that when it is clicked, the current active window will not be changed. The idea is that I want to get a clock event but prevent windows form taking activation from the current window (Word, IE, whatever.) Is this possible? If not, can I at least get the window handle of the window that is losing activation? My application is a tray based dialer that wants to be able to sendkeys a clipboard copy request to the active application so I can then pull the selected text out in my application and use it to place a call.  - Application.Exit After Event Fires I am using the webbrowser control in a winforms app. It is an unattended app, so as soon as the event "form1_shown" is fired the webbrowser control loads a url and then wires the print event as such, prints the document, and is then supposed to exit the app. webBrowser1.DocumentCompleted += new WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventHandler(PrintDocument); the print document event prints the document (without a print dialog) after the webbrowser control is loaded. I've noticed that the actual print does not take place until this event code is run and control is returned form1. My question is, I want to call Application.Exit after printing is complete, but I do not see an event available in the webbrowser control. How do I exit out of the app after the printing is done?  - Update datagridview from related controls Hi, I'm having a bit of a problem getting a particular type of form layout to work as I wish. Please bear with me as this isn't going to be a short post. The basic idea is for a form to view/edit a single table. The layout that I'm after is for a datagridview in a panel at the top of the form showing the 'headline' fields. The bottom of the form (in another panel) contains controls to show *all* of the fields for each record. The columns are a mixture of straight text (so a textbox in the bottom detail section), booleans (check boxes), dates (datetimepickers), and text from a list (combos). It almost works perfectly, but there are a couple of glitches. What I'm doing is this... When loading the form, I'm grabbing the dataset from SQL, setting up a dataview based on that, setting the dataview as the datasource for the datagridview, setting up another dataview (that will always be a single record) that will be the source for all the bottom panel controls and then setting the bindings for the controls in the bottom panel. To clarify the last two parts of that I have... The UpdateDG routine is designed to push the data back from the controls into the datagridview. That looks something like this... The problem that I'm running into is that not all of the controls update the datagridview correctly. Textbox updates are fine, but check boxes, combos and datetimepickers are a flaky. For example, if you click a checkbox in the detail section then the datagridview doesn't update. If you then click the checkbox a couple more times, it starts behaving itself. Similar things happen with datetimepickers and combos - combos especially where the style is set to DropDownList and you update it by tabbing to it and using the keyboard.  - Invoke does not change thread!? Hi, My complete scenario is a bit to complicated to explain, but my problem is this: I start a child-thread from the main thread, the child is not a BackgroundWorker, but a Thread, since it needs to be in ApartmentState.STA because it needs to create a Form and display some stuff. It all works pretty well, unless an exception occurs in the child thread. The application shows the standard error dialog to the user, and I don't want that. If an exception occurs, I want to get (at least) the exception message over to the main thread, and display it there. To accomplish this, I catch the excepion in the child thread, and does an Invoke call with the string message, to the main thread. The problem is, it does not switch to the main thread, it's always the child (using the threads-window in VS to see that)!  - Win Form never gets focus?!? Hi all, In my winform application, I want to check on certain moments if my winform has focus. If so, some code will be executed. I noticed however, that the winform never gets the focus, even when it clearly has focus. How is that possible? My solution consists of a windows project, a service project, a setup project and 2 class projects. After installation, my output produces all the relevant files in a folder "Install" on my c: drive.  - How to launch an app with double-click on filename I have an Windows Form application that has child Forms in it. I have a constructor in the main form that takes a filename as an argument an creates a child form from the data in the file. If I launch the app from the command prompt with a filename as an argument, it works fine. But if I launch the application by double-clicking on the filename in Windows Explorer the child form is not created. I thought that double-clicking a filename was the same as using the command prompt with the file name as an argument at the point where the application is launched, but apparently this is not true.  - Stopping a RichTextBox updating I am trying to do an operation where I find and highlight all instances of a string in a RichTextBox. For some reason getting the table and its children to auto-resize properly (and the flow panel's children to re-flow after) is proving difficult.  - FlowLayoutPanel clipping question Hello, I have a flow layout panel that I am programmatically adding a bunch of check box controls into. Everything works pretty well except when a check box control's label is wrapped to two lines. In that case a few pixels of the top and bottom of the label is getting clipped off, which is a little ugly.  - Focus problem in ToolStrip Hi All, I have a simple windows .net C# form with a toolStrip and a textBox. ToolStrip has 5 buttons in it. Hitting tab from a previous control brings focus to ToolStrip and first item in toolStrip gets focus. Now hitting tab takes focus to next control on form.  - low refresh rate I using a new laptop running Vista and have Nvidia GeForce 7600 graphics card. I'm trying to connect my TV to this computer using Svideo. It has worked in the past however I must have changed a setting somewhere? On my second computer with Xp it all connects right! So it's all connected but the display on the TV is just rolling lines as though it is scrambled. On the monitor setting, the refresh rate is stuck on 25Hertz Interlaced. Is there a way of forcing a higher refresh rate? or is there another setting I need to change? I have been seraching for months for an answer to this question. HELP PLEASE! Works fine. I also have a "Windows menu". The menu has an entry for all open MDI windows automatically (set MdiWindowListItem to the menu entry). Works fine as well. Now the problem: if I have more than 9 windows open, only 9 windows are displayed on the menu, plus an additional item "more windows..". Selecting this item a window with a list box is displayed with all windows. The problem: if the MDI parent window has TopMost set to true, this window is displayed behind the MDI parent. This is especially a huge problem, if the MDI parent window is maximized, because then I cannot move the MDI parent window (the window in the background has the focus). The only chance a user has in this case is to use the Task Manager to kill the application --- which is never good for a commercial app. Does anybody have an idea?  - USB Ports stop working Today my printer stopped working and the message of "One of the USB devices attached to theis computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it" came up when I reinstalled the printer.  - DataGridView column sorting glyph not shown Hello, I am using a DatGridView in virtual mode and unbound data where i listen for CellValueNeeded events to fill the grid with data. I also want to sort the data by pressing on the columns which is why i listen to ColumnHeaderMouseClick as well. It works fine, but the problem is that the sorting glyph (i.e. the sorting order triangle image) is not visible on the column header if the column size is too small. I have tried all the AutoFill options available for the column size/width but none of them seem to be working. The sorting glyph "length" is simply ignored and column width is not adapted to include to glyph (i have to manually resize the column size to see the glyph). Is there any automatic way of handling this or do i have to calculate the column width manually by taking into consern the column header text length, font size and so on? I am showing the value of this property in a PropertyGrid but depending on the type of the object I want to use the correspondant TypeConverter. Here is an example of what I mean: public byte[] Test { get { return new byte[100]; } } public object Test2 { get { return new byte[100]; } } If I have both properties in a property grid, Test will be shown as an expandable item with the text "Byte[] Array".. if I expand the item I will be able to see all of the elements in the array. However, Test2 will only show the text "System.Byte[]" and I will have no way of reading the elements of the array. Of course the property of type object will not always contain a byte[].  - Cascade non-MDI Forms I have code that cascades multiple forms that belong to my application. They are not MDI so my understanding is that the accepted method is to call CascadeWindows in user32.dll and use the desktop as the owner window. The problem is that it's un maximizing all other windows regardless of whether or not I pass their window handles to the method. Is there another way to do the cascade that doesn't have this side effect? I know I could just change all the locations. Within the cell I am placing some labels and checkboxes .
