    - Get caret pos in TextBox The documentation states that you can use the SelectionStart property of the TextBox to get the position of the caret in the TextBox. Well, what if the selection is BEFORE the caret? Say you have the word â??TEXTâ?? and you want to select â??EXâ??. There are 2 ways you can do this. You can click before the E and drag to the X so the caret is now sitting after the X. You can click after the X and drag to the E so the caret is now sitting before the E. In both cases the SelectionStart property has the value of 1 and the SelectionLength has a value of 2, yet the caret is in two different places. Using the SelectionStart property alone canâ??t always give you the correct caret position. How can one get the true caret position and be absolutely sure itâ??s correct?     - Problem using a UserControl in a DataGrid Hi In my Windows Form application I created a File Browser control that was derived from System.Windows.Forms.UserControl. It contains a single line text box and a button. The user can enter a filename in the text box or hit the browse button which pops up the File Open Dialog box and lets the user select a file. The subsequent selection is placed in the text box. This control is placed in a DataGrid using a column derived from DataGridColumnStyle. Everything works great except when Iâ??m entering text in the text box of my File Browser control, hitting Left, Right, Home, or End moves the current cell in the DataGrid instead of moving the caret in the text box. Iâ??ve found that if I derive a class from TextBox and use that in my UserControl instead of using the stock TextBox, override the ProcessCmdKey() method, and move the caret myself, I can get this to work correctly. This seems really sloppy though. I donâ??t know why the TextBox is not using and keeping the keys instead of ignoring them and letting the messages bubble up to the grid control.     - MouseDown, MouseUp Hi, I have trouble understanding why this fails but here is what I'm trying to do: I have 1 form with 2 controls in it. I created a MouseDown handler for both controls (setting up different internal things each) and 1 MouseUp handler for the form since both controls can use the same code. Now, what I was excepting was: - The 2 controls would catch and call their MouseDown handlers: that works. - And as none of the controls have no MouseUp handler the message would be propagated to the parent form where the form MouseUp handler would be called: that doesn't work.     - how to change printer settings Hi All, Does someone knows how to manage printer settings programmatically? System.Drawing.Printing.PrinterSettings class allows to change them for a custom document but I need to do it not for one document but for an installed printer in general, the same way I can do it manually by opening Printers folder on my local computer, selecting printer and changing it's settings. When I do it manually there is no difference if a printer is local or network one. Is there a convenient way to do it via .NET?     - Should I store Graphics object ? hi, We are currently porting our project from VB6 to VB .NET. Earlier we used to make scale transformations on objects like pictureBox , forms etc.Now Such transformations are made on the graphics object of the form/pictureBox. Should It be better if make a graphics object from my pictureBox in load event handler of the form and store it as member variable of the form , make transformations as and when required(we really require such transformations from mils to pixels.). And finally I can dispose it when the form is disposed. But I have read somewhere that Graphics object should never be stored as member varibale of a class.And so I am really confused as to what should I do ?     - MDI child problem (switching between MDI children) Hi, I have an MDI container with several MDIchildren. When more than 1 childform is opened i get a problem when clicking another form to get to it (take it to foreground). It only works when a control is clicked in the other form, otherwise, the first form just stays in the forground and the other form doesn't get selected. I hope this is kind of clear. I thought the problem was with one childform having the topmost-property set to true, but this isn't the case. Anyone seen this behaviour and knows what might cause it. Thanks, Bjorn.     - Drawline on Form at runtime with mouse? Greetings, I would like to draw lines on the form at runtime. Most important are to have the ability to control the line drawn to be Straight horzaontally, vertically and at a 45 degree angle. I have looked at the Scribble program and nknow I will need to capture the moust current position for the Pen tool. I also need to save and these images and recall as needed.     - Label controls inside rich textbox Hi all, i have a situation to place label controls inside rich textbox control and i have done that using richTextbox1.controls.add method. But the problem is the controls are not part of the text which i type it is overlapping my text.In simple words, Is it possible to make a label control work just like a text inside the rich textbox.     - Non-modal dialog Hi, I have a window, where for a certain event(button click), I am starting a new thread. This thread is retrieving data, creating a new window and displaying it. The window is being shown by "name.Show();". As the window is being opened, it is being closed immediately.     - Items in Combo Box list are not visible I am using Visual Basic .Net with Windows XP Professional. I have added a Combo Box to my form and changed the drop-down style to DropDownList. I have added items by typing them into the items property: "Item1" "Item2" "Item3" "Item4" "Item5" "Item6" When I run the code, the items are not visible in the drop-down list -- even though I have verified that the item count is correct when running the code. If I click on the empty space in the drop-down list where an item should be, it appears in the Combo Box. For instance, if I click where Item 1 should be then Item 1 appears in the Combo Box.     - Embedded form and Anchor property The following situation: Panel control with Dock=Fill, inside a panel an embedded form with controls in it. The code embedding the form into the panel is this: pnl.Controls.Add(form1); Everything is working perfect, except the Anchor property of controls on the embedded form is not working. The form has a grid that should be anchored to all four sides, however, because the form is embedded into the panel, this whole design is not working. Am I missing anything? Any workaround?     - Bug in DataGrid.CommitEdit (.Net v1.1) After many hours of debugging, I've finally come to the conclusion that there is a bug in DataGrid's CommitEdit. I have the following situation: I've a custom DataGridColumnStyle (for a ComboBox, who hasn't done one of these?). If no selection is made (e.g. SelectedIndex == -1), I want to abort the commit. Problem is, when my DataGridColumnStyle.Commit override is called and returns false, DataGrid.CommitEdit causes a NullReferenceException to be thrown. Oddly enough, if I cancel editting by clicking a control outside of the data grid (e.g. not causing another cell to gain focus), no error occurs until the data grid once again has a cell gain focus.     - Cannot set form background image I recently started using VisualStudio.Net for the first time. I started a project and created some forms to gain an understanding of how to use C#, Visual Studio, and the .Net framework. One of the first things I did was to create a non-standard window with rounded corners and set the background image of the form. I set the background image by simply opening the form properties and clicking the "..." button next to the BackgroundImage property and selected an image to use as the background, in this case it was a JPG, and all was fine. I could see the background image in Visual Studio and when I ran my application. Sometime later I created a new project and started developing a small and real application. I decided to add a splash screen. I wanted to use a bitmap I created as the backgroud of the splash screen. As before I opened the form properties and clicked the "..." button next the BackgroundImage property and selected the bitmap only to receive an error "Empty path name is not legal". I tried selecting several different images with the same result. I then copied images to c:\ and tried selecting from there with the same result. I thought I must have been doing something differently then I had done with the first project in which I sucessfully set the background image. I tried setting the background image in the first project, thining it would work, but it did not. I got the same error. So I closed everything down and rebooted, thinking this might help, but it did not help. What the heck is going on? Has anyone ever encountered this problem?     - TabControl/TabPage VisibleChanged event problem I am using the VisibleChanged event of the tabpage to add/remove main menu bar items. When I receive the visiblechanged event and the visible=true I add the main menu item and when I receive the event and visible=false I remove the main menu item. Everything works great, switching between the tabs works great. The problem comes in when I remove a tabpage from the tabcontrol. The tabpage receives one final visiblechanged event with visible set to true and I add the menu item back to the main menu. Is this a bug in the framework? The tab page is not in fact visible, but I don't receive any further visiblechanged events to indicate this. Any one have any work arounds for this? Any other suggestions on how to implement main menu items for each tab page? Or any other suggestion on how to hide a tab on the tab control without removing it. Thanks, Tom.     - Tabindex major trouble Hello. I have a form with a tab control with some tabpages. On each of the tabpages I have separate user controls. The user controls constist of labels, textboxes, combo boxes and datagrids. The problem is that I can't move focus between the input controls with the tab button. At all. All my controls have the TabStop property set to True, and have a positive number. The form is inherited from a form which in turn is inherited from a windows form. All of the controls I use are my own, inherited from windows controls. What could possibly be wrong? Where should I look?     - Random Exceptions in WinForms Application Periodically users are experiencing a crash of a .Net WinForms application running on Windows 2000. The application displays a MessageBox that is created in the handler for the Application.ThreadException event and the application terminates. The crashes seem to be random in that the users are not doing the same thing in the application when they crash nor can any other pattern be discerned. We have been unable to reproduce the problem. Resolution: The application needs to be restarted. Any unsaved information is lost.     - Parameter ?_1 has no default value I'm using the HierCube .net OLAP component from rainbowsoft (http://www.rbwsoft.com/) in a vb winform application (vs2003). The data source is an MS Access 2000 table; the data adapter is of the oledb type; and the sql string has two parameters ala =? At runtime the app provides values for the params like so: oledaPivotData.SelectCommand.Parameters("Conversion").Value = cboConversion.SelectedValue oledaPivotData.SelectCommand.Parameters("Year").Value = cboYear.SelectedValue The cube works fine. However the cube control won't let me access the Dimension Mapping facility, it complains that "Parameter ?_1 has no default value". I'm not sure how to solve this. I've written to the control developers, but they can be slow to respond...and this issue seems to be more generic than specific to this control.     - Smart Client and satellite assemblies Hi, we have a Windows.Forms application having several assemblies for which we have defined satellite assemblies in seperate folders according to the culture they were created in. We had to adjust the policy to full trust (each of the assemblies are sign with same key) in order to allow the download of the .exe using IE. The download of the application works but when we try to display information in the correct language it fails to do so because the correct satellite assembly was not downloaded (checked using Fusionvwlog).     - hotkeys trouble Hello, maybe someone have faced with this problem: I have a control with some textboxes, labels and buttons. Buttons have a keybord shortcut i.e. button1.Text = "Bro&wse"; the problem is that this shortcut works only when focus is on any control that has a tabindex number less than a button. It doesn't work with a focus on this button also. This problem confirms only on Windows 2000. The same app on WinXP works as expected, and has no troubles. Framework 1.1 is installed on both.     - Disabling maximise button affects maximised form size...? I've just noticed that if I set a form's window state to be maximized, and also disable the maximize button on the title bar, then the form will cover the task bar. If I enable the Maximize button, then the form does not cover the task bar. I assume this is 'by design'.... but I need a window that has no maximize button (so the user cannot 'de-maximize it) but also I don't want it to cover the task bar.     - Activate issue: not activated or active window on load I have a MDI application, but that isn't important, and why I posted it here instead of the MDI forum. I have class "App Loader" that contains Main. It loads a splash screen that shows up before the main window, and it runs on a background thread. It shows up while the app is loading. Once the app has loaded all the required resources, the main form is shown and activated. On Win 2003 and Win2K, the "app" flashes in the taskbar, but doesn't show up as the active window in the foreground. If you run it by clicking the EXE from within Windows Explorer, after it loads, Explorer is still the active window. I tried: //make this puppy come to front and activated Application.DoEvents(); this.TopMost = true; this.TopMost = false; this.BringToFront(); this.Activate(); This did improve the behaviour on XP, but not Win2K and Win2003.     - Debug makes Windows freezing? I used Visual Studio 2003/Windows XP SP1 to create a window application. At the form, I put a button and run debug. I put some break point on the Load event of form and it works fine. I also put a break point at click button event and click the button, but I never get the break point at the click button event. The Windows system seems freezing. I can not call other program. I can not use ALT-CTRL-DEL keys to restart the computer. But the Task Manager, which I started before debug, still displays the system parameters. The CPU usage is only 2 or 3 percent. The Mem Usage seems to be normal, too. After XmlDataDocument.load function called, I need to load another xml file into XmlDataDocument again.     - Can't access digital camera to copy from in code I am trying to copy pictures from a digital camera in code. When I use the FolderBrowserDialog, it won't let me select the camera as the folder. I have gotten around this by using Shell32.BrowseForFolder. I am then also able to get the names of the files. However, the path is a pidl (i believe). So I am unable to utilize .Net IO classes to manipulate the files. This is windows form that ultimately will allow the user to browse for a camera, pick a client, then ftp pictures to the server for later processing.     - Datagrid exception I have a .NET windows forms application with one form displaying data. I have a tree view on the left side and the datagrid on the right side. Tree view allows the user to select verious items and based on that selection the datagrid is bound to the appropriate datasource and table from the database. This works well. The problem comes when I resize my form and the grid portion is not visible or just barely visible. Now when I perform the same operations by selecting various items in the tree I get an exception System.ArgumentException with Message : '0' is not a valid value for 'value'. 'value' should be between 'minimum' and 'maximum'. Source : System.Windows.Forms. This happens when I call SetDataBinding method. When I again resize the form so that the grid is more visible this problem goes away. I have also seen a bizzare display with red cross over the entire grid area when I resize the grid again. Hi,

I would like to create an app that has the same layout as Windows
Computer Management where clicking on a treeview item (in left pane)
loads a different panel/control in the right pane. What I don't
understand is how to show and hide (or load and unload) the different
controls/panels in the right pane at runtime. If anyone has any
pointers or examples on best practices (minimal memory usage) for doing
this sort of thing, or even keywords to search on this topic, that
would be great.
