    - How to save preferences for an app? Before .NET, I used to use the registry to store app preferences. But apparently now there's some other way.. like storing the data in .xml files in \Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\<your app name>. Could someone point me in the direction of some info or tutorials on how to save app prefs in .NET? I found some docs on XML, but man.. it went way over my head.     - WebBrowser in MDI form messes with other controls focus Hi All, If I place a com "wrapped" WebBrowser control on a form - it works fine if NOT and MDI child. If it is an MDI child, then the other controls (text boxes for example) - will not take mouse input correctly, etc. I researched and found a fix to call form.Activate() if WM_MOUSEACTIVATE is called - but it did not work. I also found a fix to additionally subclass the WebBrowser to call Focus() - which did not work. If you switch to a different MDI child, and then switch back - everything then works correctly. If you switch to a different application, and then switch back - everything then works correctly. This is very frustrating - I have not found any useful info so far. - Again - the Activate() on WM_MOUSEACTIVATE does not work Thanks in advance for any help.     - how to expand and collapse rows in DataGrid to create parent/child Hello al, I am new to Windows Forms and for the past week or so, I have been pulling my hair out, trying to figure out how I can implement expand/collapse in the DataGrid. I do understand that if I setup relations between two tables in a dataset, and then assign the primary table to the DataGrid, I get the +/- buttons and I can expand and collapse, but this is NOT what I want. I don't have two tables. I have 1 table, where there are rows of data, some of which are childern of other rows. This is indicated by a colum in each row, which has the ID of the parent row. There is a really good example of what I want to do here: http://www.codeproject.com/aspnet/HierDataGrid.asp Basically, this person (in the link above) has implemented EXACTLY what I want to do, by adding a colum with the +/- buttons, and then hiding all rows that are NOT supposed to be displayed and displaying those what ARE supposed to be displayed, using the Visible property of the row in the datagrid (setting it to true/false as needed). I have looked all over the internet to try and find out how to do this in Windows Forms DataGrid, have had no luck so far. Your help would be GREATLY appreciated.     - Interface design Hello, I am writing a Windows Forms application for users with a variety of screen resolution settings (800 x 600, 1024 x 768, etc.) What is the best (fastest) way to design an interface in which the controls will be positioned in an appropriate scale regardless of the screen resolution?     - Asychronous events and rendering contexts Hopefully this is the right newsgroup. I figured you guys would be the best experts on this. I am learning C# and .NET and went a little crazy with the events. Now I am not sure how to isolate this problem. Here is my architecture, I have: 1. an OpenGLPanel class derived from UserControl that handles the repainting using OpenGL. A render event is published for subscribers to paint into the window. 2. a Manipulator class that handles mouse and keyboard events to cause rotations, scales, etc. using events. 3. a Camera class that rotates, zooms, etc. based on any subscriptions to a Manipulator and posts view update events. Okay, simple scenario, I have a form with two OpenGLPanels, visible. Each has a camera and listens for the camera events. The camera listen for the manipulator events. The manipulator listen's for the form's mouse and keyboard events (a complete cycle!!!!!). The main form has a method to draw an object and subscribes to the OpenGLPanel's render event. Things work great in a serial world. I even could attach a manipulator to both cameras, etc. Pretty cool!! I was just started to really like this new environment. I decided to switch from just firing the event to doing an asynchronous call (as a first step to remoting the camera). I would really like a OneWay approach for the camera, but both of these destroy the OpenGL context or something. Right now, I am only processing the camera updates to the OpenGLPanel's asynchronously, but would suspect that all of the mouse events are also handles asynchronously. The render events will always be sequential, but I would also like to have the manipulator events happen OneWay to the cameras. The problem with the render made sense to me at first, if I set the active rendering context and then the thread got bumped, etc. I added [Synchronization] in front of the OpenGLPanel class. It and the Form1 class are the only ones that make OpenGL calls. I get one of the Panels not redrawing. The calls are all happening, but I think something in the state got messed up. The other panel starts off blank and then when I force a particular event (set of events) it shows up and works properly. Changing the subscription order seems to reverse which panel works and which one does not. Pretty much every method is atomic and nothing is left in a bad state (if I programmed it correctly). I decided to add [Synchronization] before all of my classes, but nothing helps. BTW, I never create any threads, just those (two) from a default Windows form. I am running on a single CPU machine. Okay, now for the question(s): 1) Is this a correct way to protect a shared system resource? 2) Is there a better way? 3) Any guesses on what might be going on before I attempt to boil the code down to a simpler test case (or assugn it as a midterm question :-) )? 4) I can see the High priority thread preempting the other thread, such that mouse calls are continually triggered before any updates to the display can finish. I would expect, that after I release the mouse and wait idle for awhile the display would redraw. Some other questions on multi-tasking: 4) My counter indicates I am still getting 70-90 frames-per-second, but visually, it is more like 1-2 fps. 5) Are the events queued, or do I always just get the most recent event? If they are queued, is there an easy way to only get the latest. I want to display with the latest camera, not march thru all of the events. 6) How does a Windows form split up its tasks into threads? I know you want the user interface thread to be at a high priority, is everything in the form then issued at a low priority? This would include control updates and displays, so ... This is all educational code for my own amusement, so I happy to give the entire project to anyone interested in looking into this further.     - Good Practice on ListBox Greetings I want to display a listbox on the form which will include two columns from the data table" FirstName" & "LastName" What I've done now, is modify the DataAdapter to include two additional colums as: [FirstName] + " " +[LastName] As NameFN [LastName] + " " +[FirstName] AS NameLN I've selected NameFN as the DisplayMember of the listbox However, I've also selected the Sort option to be true So what I see on the listbox doesn't correspond to the record selected on the form. The record is selected automatically on the form because my DataSource Property is bound to the dataset object. Is this a good practice ? Or its better to create a dynamic Array List on loadup and use that ? If that is the case how can I make the list selection, make the record on the form change ?     - Problem positioning controls within a panel with autoscroll=true I don't know if this is a bug or if I am doing something wrong, but hopefully somebody could help me. I have a panel with autoscroll=true, and I am trying to position controls within it, however they don't position correctly. According to MS's documentation Panel.Left "Gets or sets the distance, in pixels, between the left edge of the control and the left edge of its container's client area." Here's the sample code for you to reconstruct it real quick. Essentially its a form with a panel with autoscroll=true, a textbox of any size outside of the panel, and a button with the following click event handler. int x = 0; int y = 0; private void button1_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { TextBox f = new TextBox(); f.Size = textBox1.Size; f.Multiline = true; panel1.Controls.Add(f); f.Left = x1; f.Top = y1; //f.Location = new Point(x1, y1); x1 += 100; y1 += 100; panel1.Refresh(); } It should draw textboxes diagonally toward the right, with a scrollbar eventually appearing. However, if you move the horiz/vert. scrollbars any bit after creating a few of these diagonal boxes, it jumps a huge gap, then creates the textbox. What I think should be happening is that it should create a lot of textboxes diagonally with no gaps between them regardless of whether or not the scrollbars have been moved at all. I have tried using the commented out location line above and I have tried setting the positions before adding it into the panel. Nothing has worked for me so far.     - Problem/Bug: poor C# windows forms accessibility for disabled? Hi, Because the blind are unable to use a mouse, keyboard navigation is key. A major difficulty is that not all windows forms controls are keyboard 'tab-able' or 'arrow-able' or have "tab order". The application is built and the next step is to create the custom JAWS (Freedom Scientific)screen reader script to read the application. The application uses the accessibility properties for controls provided by C#. JAWS reads properties these fine --using a mouse for access. For example, JAWS can read ComboBoxes and DateTimePickers that are placed into DataGrid cells without any problem. The problem is the lack of keyboard access. Using Microsoft's accessibility SDK 2.0 tools: AccExplorer32, Inspect32, AccEvent32, I can gather a great deal of information. It appears that C# controls can not be given individual unique IDs. JAWS can navigate to IDs. Is there something that can act like a unique identifier? Different classes/objects are simply labeled WindowsForms10.Window.8.app3. This is too ambiguous. JAWS has a limited number of recognized classes it understands, but a substitution could be made if an unknown class was unique. What about custom controls? Is there a way to uniquely ID C# custom controls? There are many very interesting controls being developed in the .NET world, that could be read if there where more identifiers. Looking for help at MSDN and the Knowledge Base it seems that there is a significant difference between C# and C/C++ functionality in this context. I have made some progress. My control is strong names, with allow partially trusted callers attribute. I have created a custom code group with full trust for my assembly. Before, my control would not load at all due to security issues. I would get exceptions outputed into my IEDebug log. Now i get no errors in my IEDebug log but in Internet Explorer (Exclamation mark at the bottom left of IE), I get an error: Request for the permission of type System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089 failed.     - Creating a dynamic grid Hello, I have a question about creating a dynamic grid layout. The grid should have the following: - a rowheader(12 columns). (0) - a detail row with also 12 columns (contains the data). (1) - a second row with 3 columns where the first column is empty, the second column has a description in it like the rowheader above and a third column with the value of this row. (2) - a third row which has the same layout as the second row. (3) row (1), (2) and (3) should be created multiple times depending on the data. Is this possible to create this within C#. At the moment I draw this "grid" with seperate labels. I do this when I retrive the data for it. The data can change when clicking an other row in a different grid. My "label-grid" works fine but it is to slow when redrawing it when selecting other data because the labels must be removed from the form and created again within the code.     - Howto trigger validation of a form Hello The ContainerControl.Validate() method is documented to: "Validates the last invalidated control and its ancestors up through, but not including, the current control." How to I, from a form (more precisly a base form) trigger the validation of the form itself. I want to ensure that the Validation events is triggered and all values transferred (trough databinding) before I peform a Save operation, however, calling the Validate() method does not cause the validation events to be triggered on the form itself.     - Form transparency issues Recently I wanted to create a small little program that could sit= on the desktop and not block the desktop wallpaper=2E There are= two methods to accomplish this ( that I am aware of )=2E 1) create a solid color bmp as a background image and set the= transparency key to match its color 2) specify the form's background color with a matching= transparency key Now my issues with both methods, but first it should be known= that I have set the forms to have no border or title bar and= have implemented code that allows me to click-and-hold anywhere= ( with exceptions listed below ) on the form and move it=2E The= data actually displayed on the form is just text and one= rectangle, all drawn by me ( there are no controls on the form= itself )=2E 1) I have two issues with this method, although it is what I'm= prefering to use at the moment=2E The first seems to be the= discrepancy between how the program is handled when the= computer's Color Depth is 32bit or when it is less than 32bit (= 16bit )=2E When the color depth is 32bit then I am able to click= on the entire area the form inhabits ( even that which is= transparent ) and move it, but if the color depth is less than= 32bit ( 16bit ) then only the drawn text or rectangle outline (= since it has no fill ) can be clicked to drag the program= around=2E Clicking on the transparent areas just passes the click= through the form to whatever is below ( even when I know the= form has focus )=2E I'd like to be able, regardless of the= desktop's color depth, to click anywhere within the form area= and move the application=2E The second issue I have with this method occurs when I take my= executable and put it on another PC ( my PC is XP Pro, the other= PC is XP Home=2E=2E Both SP2 )=2E The problem is similar, but a= little different=2E When the 2nd PC's color depth is at 32bit,= the transparency does not work=2E The green/lime ( that's the= transparent color I'm using ) background shows=2E Needless to say= this is not acceptable=2E When I change the color depth to less= than 32bit ( 24bit this time ), the transparency actually works,= but I come across the same issue of clicks on the transparent= areas just passing through=2E 2) With this method I have not tried it on a 2nd PC yet ( I don't= have it available where I am atm )=2E Its basically the same= "issue" as mentioned above with color depth less than 32bit,= except it does it with a color depth of 32bit and 16bit=2E Clicks= on the transparent areas just pass right through=2E I'm tempted= to just go with this method and possibly make one area on the= form that is meant to be used to drag it around ( similar to the= idea of the box that appears to move tables in MS Word ), but= I'm hoping there's a solution I'm unaware of before I do that=2E Anyways, all of this brings up some interesting questions=2E -What does color depth have to do with transparency handling? -Does the version of XP ( Home or Pro ) handle transparency= differently? Probably some more questions also=2E Not sure if it matters, but I'm doing all of this in C#=2E So any ideas to get pass any of these issues?     - Embedded WinForm Control in IE crashes... Hello, I have a WinForm control embedded in IE that crashes everytime I close my browser. As a workaround, I've been able to use the SendMessage with WM_GETTEXT to poll the control on a timer to retrieve the text, but ideally I'd like to intercept the messages to the textbox instead, if at all possible. CText has properties like Value and Text, where Text is used to display formatted Value.     - Hiding non-databound hyperlinks in a DataGrid I am brand new to ASP.NET and am now required to take over maintenance of a .NET/C# web application. On one of the pages I'm working on there is a DataGrid which has multiple columns. One of the columns is not databound and instead has up to three hyperlinks in it (Edit, Award, and Cancel). A couple of the hyperlinks should not be shown in certain cases. Now, mind you, I don't know if it's being done in the way that's best to do it. It looks like there is a "panel" being created to contain the hyperlinks that may not be visible. I don't know why though (i.e. why not just set hyperlink's Visible property and be done with it without a panel?). That being said, I want to change the page so that one of the hyperlinks does not show (i.e. Visible = False) based on a certain value for a session cookie.     - File.CreateText fails I am developing a Windows application. The source is stored on a network share, probably 6 directories deep. When I say: File.CreateText("G:\temp\" & _dataSourceInfo.Csv_filename) the file is created OK on the local disk G in directory temp. I have a form where user can enter some query parameters and execute the query. Each control (TextBox, DateTimePicker etc.) has Validating, Validated handlers. If the user edits query parameters manually validation code is executed upon leaving control which is just edited. The application can also read default data from config file/command line. Such data is used to populate form controls upon form creation/loading but it does not trigger validation process.     - Windows XP ComboBox bug when using "Windows Classic Style" I found a very odd bug while developing a Forms app with Visual Studio 2003. If you have a ComboBox with no items in it, when you click the arrow, an empty drop down list is displayed which is the height of 1 item. In Windows XP, this all works fine if you have your "Windows and Buttons" Display Setting to "Windows XP Style". However, if you change it to "Windows Classic Style", when you click the arrow in your combobox, it does not show the empty drop down list. Worse yet, the system "thinks" it is displayed so the UI is "locked" (just like when a drop down list is displayed) and your next click on the app will do nothing, because this is what would normally close the drop down list. A couple things to note: -If the combo box is not empty, it always properly displays the drop down list -It is not limited to .NET, I built a C++ app with Visual Studio 6.0 and get the same behavior -There are rare circumstances where it does work correctly in "Windows Classic View." Sometimes an empty combobox DOES display the empty drop down list, but it seems to be very rare. I can not explain why sometimes it does and sometimes it doesnt. I have not been able to come up with a scenario where I can consistanly get the empty drop down list to display in "Windows Classic View", in fact, I have only gotten it to happen a couple times. Here are the steps to reproduce (Must be running Windows XP): -Set your style to "Windows Classic Style" by right-clicking empty space on your desktop, select Properties, click the Appearance tab and select the "Windows Classic Style" in the "Windows and buttons" drop down list -Open Visual Studio and create a simple Windows App. Drag a ComboBox onto the Form.
