    - Possible Help Provider bug! Hi! I have a strange problem with connecting help file to windows forms. I am using the helpprovider and attaching the help in the usual way via designer. I have another popup form and whenever I open that form, the help stops working. So, after I start my application and open the popup form, and close it, then if I press F1 on the main form, the help does not come up (seems like the cursor changes to busy momnetarily and then dies). However, if I open the help file once before opening the popup form, everything works fine (even after the popup closes). I am using COM interop on the popup form (that may be screwing it up...)     - Text margins in a control I'm finding some odd results trying to use exact margins in a control. I'm using Tahoma 8.25pt bold font. I need the text to start exactly 5 pixels from the left-hand edge of the control. When using the Graphics.DrawString method, I have to pass a left edge of 3 in the rectangle for the text to begin 5 pixels from the left edge. Since it's 0 based, a value of 3 works out to 4 pixels. A value of 0 passed into the rectangle leaves a 1 pixel margin. What if I wanted my text flush against the edge, though? Where is the extra pixel coming from? Thanks.     - resource icons Hi I've just created my first application that registers an icon in the taskbar. In the process I noted that my icon doesn't show up as external file in the project, it seems to be registered as a resource somehow. Now I'm wondering if I could add additional icons so that I don't have to deliver them with the executable, but since I don't know how the first icon belonging to the NotifyIcon has been added, there's no way I can duplicate that process without adding another NotifyIcon.     - No touch deployment, load unmanaged dll Hi, I have windows form application that uses unmanaged c library. When I am using no touch deployment, I am trying to load this dll from url that this application came from. for example http://Myserver/Depl0y/analytic.dll I am geeting exception File not found. My problem with doing this is that I don't understand the "Attribute[] attributes" parameter. The help says only that it acts as a filter.     - .NET Application Updater Component: how to handle an OCX? Hi, I have an VB.NET application that uses an OCX for some control. I integrated the application with the .NET Application Updater Component (http://windowsforms.net/articles/appupdater.aspx) to copy automaticly new versions of the application to the clients. The problem is: it copies the OCX, but the OCX isn't registered. Everything works fine until the the directory of the old version is deleted: The application doesn't find anymore a registered ocx, and therefore throws an error. Is there anyway how I could work aroudn this problem? Can I make it registered automaticly? Or make it in some way that it shouldn't be registered? Maybe be playing with the way I reference it in VS.NET? Or some way I can put it in my first setup so I won't have this problem with other updates?     - Problems with the display of the tabs in my customized TabControl I want to change the the color of the tabs and the color of TabControl itself in a TabControl. Does anybody have an idea how I could change the color of the tabs and also the color of the tabControl itself in a proper way? I know about "dotnetmagics", but I am not willed to purchase it, because I think there has to be a different way of implementing this comparative simple task.     - NumericUpDown ignores Minimum/Maximum Everyone knows by now that the NumericUpDown control does not fire the ValueChanged event when the user has manually entered a value. However, I just discovered that manually entered values are also never restricted to the Minimum and Maximum values, not even when the user tabs away from the control! The attached sample program creates a NUD control with a value range of 1-10, and a button whose sole purpose is to allow tabbing away from the NUD control. Note that you can manually enter whatever value you want, and the value will persist even after tabbing back and forth. The only workaround that I've found is to attach a Validating event handler that cancels any change that would cause the value to leave the range defined by Minimum and Maximum. Is there some secret trick that I'm missing?     - problems displaying forms correctly Greetings I have a very simple question. I'm having some problems working with forms. On my winforms application, I have a form (main_form) that display another form that shows a listing od data. This sencond form (listing_form) is displayed with the ShowDialog(this) method (called from main_form). On this second form I have a "new item" button that displays a third form (data_form) for data input. What I want is, when the button "new item" is pressed, the form listing_form closes and the form data_form appears. So I cannot use ShowDialog(main_form) from listing_form to display the data_form because listing_form does not closes (it waits for the data_form to close). What I need is the data_form to be called/displayed from the listing_form and be modal relative to the main_form, and close the listing_form at the time the data_form is displayed.     - datagrid scrolling...capturihng rows displayed in view of datagrid I have a datagrid on a property tab sheet. Lets say that the grid contains 50 rows with 12 displaying on the first page. For this example lets say the user scrolls down to record 3 and records 3-14 display. The user clicks off to another tab and comes back. They do not select anything on the grid. I want to remember when they come back to scroll to position 3 at the top through 14 on that page. I know how to handle this if a record is selected on the grid but that is not the case in this example. I was looking at the paint method to get the rows and the scroll event but I don't know how to capture the rows displayed in the view of the grid.     - Inheriting forms by code, Nullreference exception I have a project which has two solutions, one for .NET on the PC and one for .NET on mobile devices, most of the code is shared between the two projects in a commmon folder, but both projects have thier own version of Form1. The problem is that there is a lot of code in Form1 that could be shared between the two projects, really the only major differences are in the windows form designer code. I recently have been trying to make a new class that inherits the project specific Form1, i have stripped out all but the Constructor and the Form designer code (declarations,initializecomponent) from form1. The new class inherits simply inherits the controls and initializecomponent from Form1. The new class contains all of my worker subs and the control events etc. The problem i am having is that when i go to access one of the controls (after the constructer and initializecomponent have been called), it gives a System.NullReference Exception "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." yet i can see the control and its properties as part of the ME reference under locals in the debugger.     - How to clean out existing installation... This was the closest newsgroup name to the problem I am having. The application is actually a Windows Service but I think the problem I am having may be familiar to forms developers. I have installed an application with one forms project and two windows service projects that the form controlls. When I was doing a re-install this morning I got a System.IO.FileNotFoundException. Since then I have been trying to uninstall and delete files and remove registry entries and renaming the project files. By this time I think I have completely hosed the configurations and everything related to this solution. Is there any way to remove it all from my installation history and pull this thorn out of my system? I'm on the verge of a melt-down. But I would like the information on how to hunt down all the hooks that have been sunk into my machine. Where can I find this kind of info? Any keywords I should look for?     - Drag & drop remote file on Windows Explorer Hi NG, I would like to drag items from my own ListView-Control to the Windows Explorer. Those items are remote files which are *not* locally present. I know drag&drop to the Explorer works fine if the files are locally present and the data part of the DoDragDrop operation contains an array of all files to be copied: data.SetData(DataFormats.FileDrop, new string[] {@"C:\test01.txt"}); To prevent my application as well as the Explorer from being blocked, while x MB are being downloaded, I guess there must be some other way to deliver files to the Explorer (e.g. via named pipes or directly via IO-Stream).     - Form Textbox Problem I have an inherited form which has some textboxes on it. After I load my data into the textboxes I try to click in the textboxes to edit the data. When I click the data I am only able to put the cursor at the beginning of the text box regardless of where I click. I am also unable to select text with the mouse. if I put the focus on another form and return to the form the textboxes work as they should.     - Datagrid Bug - Known Workaround? Hi All, I'm getting the following error which I can't fix by the workarounds I've seen suggested: "Error when committing the row to the original datastore. Index was outside the bounds of the Array" This occurs under the following circumstances: I have a dataset which gets returned from a WebService I create a dataview based on a table in this dataset which is used as the datasource for a datagrid in a Windows Forms Application The datagrid is set to readonly - I want to be in control of all updates and deletions. I delete a record which was displayed in the datagrid, and get a new dataset from the database and rebind the view to the datagrid. I then click on any row in the datagrid and get the above error. How can I tell the datagrid to forget the original data? Discard it? That I don't want it to commit anything to a datastore? I'm finished with it. Let's move on, I have fresh data?     - Toolbar icon images disappear when docked vertically - Bug? I have a simple C# Windows Forms application with two toolbars, using the standard .NET toolbar and imagelist classes. I want to dock one toolbar at the top and the other at the left edge of the form. In the designer they look fine but when I run the app the vertically-docked bar loses all its icon images. I've tried various settings like flat vs. normal, and I tried adding Application.EnableVisualStyles() and Application.DoEvents() before Application.Run(), but no difference. Is this just a bug (hard to believe one simply can't have vertical toolbars in .NET) or is there some setting or method I've overlooked?     - NullReferenceException in UnsafeNativeMethods.PeekMessage and multithreading concepts in general I'm developing a simple applications that extracts data from files, that can eventually become large. I have logic that scans a particular folder, and for each file in the folder instanciates a parser class and processes the specified file. I want to start a background thread with the main logic to not freeze the UI. I am new to windows forms, so i had to try some scenarios and I am wonder what is the best approach. Also, when i manipulate the UI controls on the form from the worker thread it sometimes yields an error, the cause of which i can't exactly understand. More detailed explanation follows. I do the following: On the click event of a specific button I start the worker thread with: ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem( new WaitCallback(ReadTree), this ); ReadTree is a static method that scans the directory and parses the files found. While doing this, i want be showing percentage and a progress bar. It used to work with no problem - the background thread accesses and manipulates the controls of the form, that is passed as a paremeter. The problem is not caused by the pool, because i tried to start the thread also as follows: Thread t = new Thread( new ThreadStart( ReadTree ) ); t.Start(); Then, I did some change in the logic and the UI and i found that the application crashes, yielding a NullReferenceException in the following code, that updates the percentage label and the progress bar and adds a new record for the parsed file in a dataset, that is bound to a grid in the main form: ((frmMain)state).progressBar.Increment( (Int32)fileSize ); if ( parsedBytes < ((frmMain)state).totalBytes ) parsedBytes += fileSize; ((frmMain)state).lblPercentage.Text = Math.Round( ( (double)parsedBytes/(double)((frmMain)state).totalBytes ) * 100 ).ToString() + "%"; newRow = ((frmMain)state).dsFiles.Tables["Files"].NewRow(); newRow[0] = fileName; ((frmMain)state).dsFiles.Tables["Files"].Rows.Add( newRow ); However, if i simply run the method in the same thread there is no problem. The error does not fire every time when i change properties of form controls - it just happens on a particular file. No division by zero or anything wrong with the numbers. And, as i see it, the error is not actually taking place in the above code, but just happens in the mean time, because if all this is in a try-catch block, the exception is not caught. Also try-catch wrapping the starting of the thread - also nothing. When I do the following: try { Application.Run(new frmMain()); } catch( Exception ex ) { String txt = ex.Message; } I manage to catch the exception. Another issue, that I find curious is that when i QuickView the state object (that is, the main form) the viewer takes very long time to load. Then, some properties are displayed correctly, while others show "error: cannot obtain value", for example the Text property of the label that I try to access. I see that this is a problem caused by a background thread accessing the forms elements, which doesn't seem to be the best approach, but where can i read more about this problem, and what exactly happens behind the stage. And also, what is the best workaround concept for this. I intend to do create a new class, that manages the scanning of the directory and the calling of the parsing functions, which does not tuch any form members. It will expose an event, for which the form will subscribe, and will alter the UI appropriately, according to the EventArgs passed. Is this the best approach?     - Catching events in separate thread? Hi all, I have a windows form that uses an imported COM class to talk to a legacy system. The COM object works asynchronously - An even is fired when data has been returned. This works fine, except that Im getting too many events fired! Thus my windows form becomes pretty sluggish and unresponsive, and CPU utilistaion is pretty high. Is there any way I can set up another thread to recieve and handle these events instead?     - ThreadPooling in Grid Control Dear All, We have a Grid Control that fires a WebService in a thread to make UI responsive while the Grid Control is fetching the data...we had used ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem for this...this works fine if there is a single Grid object in a Form...if there are more than 3 Grid objects in the same form then we start getting http 404 errors... I would like to execute the population of the Grid one after the other...I guess this is not possible using ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem...     - TreeView flashing when resizing a form I've seen several posts from people who have seen this flashing in TreeView's when resizing a form. I've noticed it in my app, but only in the child windows. For example, my main form has a splitter with a TreeView and I do not get the flickering with it. I created a new Form based Windows app. Added a TreeView (dock left), then a splitter and a property grid on the right (dock fill). For this test, I added a panel and button at the bottom so I could create the child form. I created a second form and created it the exact same way - TreeView on the left, splitter and a property grid on the right. In the click handler for the button on the first form, I create a new "Form2" and call "ShowDialog" passing "this" in as a parameter to make the main form the parent for the dialog. After adding some nodes to each of the tree views, fire up the app. If you resize the main form, you won't see flickering in the tree view. Click the button to show the parent form and resize it - you will see horrible flickering. Now, why is that? With the exception of the extra panel to hold the button on the main form, they are identical, yet the child displayed with ShowDialog shows terrible flickering. If I had to guess (which I guess I am guessing right now :-) I'd say Microsoft was expecting that forms shown with "ShowDialog" would not be made resizable so they left out paint optimizations when resizing.     - ListView Control I am wondering if it is possible to easily duplicate the ListView control behavior in the Windows explorer when a new folder is defined. I am talking about the scenario where the user wants to create a new folder, the control displays a folder called New Folder which is highlighted inside a rectangle so that the user can easily change the name of New Folder. That is a really slick interface but I know that Microsoft is famous for having slick interfaces that are very difficult for most developers to implement.     - activating windows from a separate thread Hi: I'm running a chat application that when called by a remote caller, opens a chat window. Currently, I'm using Application.Run() to create each new window, because I am having problems accessing the window from the non-gui thread. However, I imagine this is very resource intensive, and would rather find a cleaner approach, if possible. In testing possible scenarios, I've noted that a form instantiated inside the constructor of the main window can be called (invoked, actually) from a different thread....if it has already been shown before. By that, I mean if a call to show has been placed on the child form from the parent's gui thread, then subsequent calls work out fine. In debugging, I noted that if the form hasn't already been shown, then the first InvokeRequired call to the form comes back as false. Obviously, this isn't true, since I do need to view the form from the thread that instantiated it. I've tried tricks to get around this with no avail. I've set a flag up so that the first time Load is called from the child form, it's visible flag is set to false. I've done the same with calling hide the first time; i've combined the two. I've called Close on them (which has cancel set to true and hide set). Then I've called them first from the parent's constructor with Show(). They child window doesn't hide. I've tried calling invoke directly without testing...I get an exception because the window hasn't been created yet. I'm running out of options. The only other option I can think of right now is to setup an invisible button and invoke it, which will show the window. I think....that would work...I don't know, though. I've always had problems for some reason with the button.PerformClick() method. Does anyone have any suggestions on ways to get the gui to do its loadup stuff without displaying the child window, so I can call the child window from another thread safely?     - Changing alignment of column in datagrid I thought I had done this before, but I'm apparently overlooking something. All I want to do is set the alignment of the first column to the right. The dataset gives me 5 columns and will auto-format the grid, but I really want to align just one column. Thus the code below. However, the app blows right past my attempt to impose a new table style and auto-formats the grid with everything aligned to the left (I have deleted all table styles from the Datagrid properties, so there is no "default"). Is it possible to set alignment for one column or do ALL need to be manually aligned? Anything else I'm overlooking?
