    - DateTimePicker Fast Data entry problem Hello, When i enter a date in datetimepicker (vb 2005) i have to press to key "/" or the key right to get from day to month and then to year. That can be a major drawback for fast data entry. I want to type just the day and the month and the year.no other characters Is there anyway to overcome this behaviour with the specific control?     - Elegant lookup? I have a commaseparated string of integers (from My.Settings). I want to check if a specified number exists in the array. My idea was to first convert to a string array and then do some kind of search. I can of course add them all manually to a hashtable, but is there some kind of direct conversion that might help?     - Passing Value back from a form In a windows form application created in VS 2005 VB.Net I have one form which calls another form and supplies a value.     - Refresh databinding? I have a form where I want to populate a grid wih a dataset table. To get the convenient designtime help I have dragged a typed dataset onto the form, thus receiving a dataset control and a bindingsource control on the fly. As the dataset is quite heavy I want to reuse an existing dataset of the main form, already loaded with data. The dataset is sent to the subform constructor as a reference. Problem is that when I change datasource of the grid I loose specific formatting, set through the designer bindingsource. My idea then was to try switching the datasource of the bindingsource control. This seems to partly work. The bindingsource reports to have the correct number of records. BUT they still don't show up in the grid! Me.TblFeedbackBindingSource.DataSource = _ds I expected some kind of refresh mechanism, but the data is not shown until I add this line, where I specify the datasource of the grid ONCE AGAIN.     - constraint programming Hi, How can I include contraints in VB.NET (Windows Forms, 2.0), using Objects with Propertys? I need several property's be recalculated when others change, but not in a straightforward way: When A is changed, B has to change, but when B changes, A has to change (or C or ...). Untill now I added routines in the Set-Property that calculated the other Property, but I'm loosing the overview, and I would have referred to have all this rules centrally placed. Also, I'm kind of affraid of endless loops: A changes B, B changes A, which changed B again etc etc... Is there a way to do some kind of constraint programming in VB.NET? Or how should I implement such a thing the best way? I need constraints like this: - When the Currency changes, the AmountNewCurrency must be automaticly changed to AmountOldCurrency * CurrencyRate but: When the user changes the in the TextBox the AmountNewCurrency, the AmountOldCurrency must be changed too (AmountNewCurrency / CurrencyRate). - Another one: TotalBuyPrice = the total Price we pay for all the Articles TotalSellPrice = The total Price at which we sell the Articles Percentage: the percentage we add to the TotalBuyPrice to have a sudden TotalSellPrice. -> Is Percentage is changed, TotalSellPrice must be changed (and the ArticleSellPrice accordingly). but: -> When the TotalSellPrice is changed, the percentage has to be calculated automaticly, and the ArticleSellPrice of each article has to be changed proportionally - and many many more...     - Design Question: onChange Event populating a second list box I'm looking for thoughts on the "correct" design for this problem (DotNet 2.0 - in winforms). I've got two combo boxes (combo1 and combo2), both are populating via database calls (using a separate DB handler class). "combo1" contains a list of countries and is fairly static, it can be added to but no other external events cause a change in its population. "combo2" however is populated with a list of options specific to a particular country. Changing the selected item in "combo1" causes a refresh of the items listed in "combo2". In my solution, I've extended the ComboBox for "combo2", allowing it to contain a reference to both "combo1" and the DB handler class (they are passed to, not created in the extended ComboBox class (note "combo1" has also been extended to contain a ref to the DB handler class and set itself up from it). This has allowed me to attach the code that populates "combo2" to the OnSelectedIndexChanged event of "combo1". It produces really nice tight code, but I've just run into an issue that makes me think that I may not have the best design (it's close but not quite). Basically the issue is: how, if you persist the previous user selection, do you safely set up the control(s) the second+ time that the user enters the form. Pseudo-code of the issue: { InitialiseComponents(); ... combo1.DbHandler = dbh1; // Populates list with contents of dbh1 combo2.DbHandler = dbh2; // Assigns db2 to control, no list population as no country selection yet. combo2.CountryComboBox = combo1; // no have implied country selection, and populates list accordingly ... combo1.SelectedItem = UserSetting.cb1Value; // Changes selected country, which fires updating of list in combo2 // I'm worried about this next line! combo2.SelectedItem = UserSetting.cb2.Value; // Should set selected option for previously selected country ... } I think in the above example, the line of code that tries to set the selected item on combo2 could be run before, or at the same time as, the event that updates combo2's list (triggered by setting the selected item in combo1). Is this true, do triggered events run in parallel to the code that triggered them? If so, what's the solution? Please note in the actual form, I've got 4 copies of this user control and adding a country or option in one of them, needs to update all the others - this is why the extended combobox contains a reference to the (shared) db handler. The Create function in the dbhandler fires an event that the extended combobox attaches to. This in turn causes the list to update accordingly. I feel that I'm not far from a MVC design pattern, and it may be the answer - but I don't want to just end up moving the same problem out into another class.     - Composite UI Application Block - Thread Safe Does anyone have any input on setting up my CAB application so that the application is thread safe, and cached appropiately? I read that this can be managed through Services, and dynamic injection. On the contrary, I was told that this can be handled using Enterprise Library cached application block. Last, but not least, i read you can implement this at the class level, creating immutable classes, and caching them accordingly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?     - Help needed with Asynchronous threading Hi, I have the below code in an MDI childform which saves a dataset to a temp file. Trouble is, while this process is running (can sometimes be up to several minutes), the interface is effectively blocked ... so I want to try and run this process in another asynchronous thread in the background, and when it's finished it would raise an event on the MDI app and the form that started it to tell the user the file is written.     - Dialog form closes when hidden using ShowWindow( hwnd, SW_HIDE) Hello, I have a windows forms application (AppForm) which opens another form to configure its settings (SettingsForm). I also have a windows desktop manager application called VirtuaWin installed on my computer. This program allowing to maintain multiple desktops. When the active desktop is changed, it hides all windows in the current desktop and then shows all windows that belong to the new one. Here is the problem: if I open SettingsForm from the AppForm, then switch to another desktop, and then switch back to my original desktop, then SettingsForm disappears. In the debugger I see that the SettingsForm was closed with DialogResult::Cancel result. By the way, this happens when the SettingsForm is shown using ShowDialog() method. Show() method does not do this. Could anyone tell me why does the form close when its window is hidden and how can I override this behavior?     - How do convince a DataGridView it's been edited? The situation: * I have a ButtonColumn in a DataGridView. * When the user preses one of the buttons, a dialog appears. * Based on what the user selects in the dialog, data is entered programmatically into the the underlying cell (i.e., I'm setting Value property of the cell based on user input, but the user is not directly entering any data). The problem: The DataGridView doesn't seem believe the user has edited the row, so if the user clicks or tabs somewhere else (which causes the DataGridView to lose focus), all the changes to the row get cleared/canceled. Other information: Looking at the RowHeaderCell for the row as it's being edited, it changes from a large asterisk [*] to a right arrow + asterisk [>*]. This is different than if the user directly edits a cell by typing (in that case, you'd get a pencil icon while the cell is in edit mode followed by a large right arrow after the change is committed). My question: So, how do I programmatically tell the DataGridView that the user really has touched/edited this row and that the data should stick even if the DataGridView loses focus.     - FlowLayoutPanel, why can't I remove the space between my controls? Hi, I want to make a toolbox form (like the one in Adobe Photoshop), so I would like to put many buttons one beside the others (beside, over and under, just like the toolbox in photoshop). I thought FlowLayoutPanel would be the thing to go, but I can't remove the space between my buttons even if I put all zeros (0) in margin and padding. Is there something I'm missing?     - Stupid VS2005/ .NET 2.0 splash screen restrictions. Is there a solution. I have just moved from 1.1, where I had my splash screen to a tee, to 2.0 where I find it impossible to get a satisfactory solution and its driving me mad! This is how a splash screen SHOULD work (and did in 1.1) when you load a program (MICROSOFT, please take note!!!): Splash screen appears Login screen appears, user enters credentials. If the login was successful the login box disappears, and the main form starts loading. Whilst it is loading (which can take a few seconds) it spits out messages to the splash screen (e.g. "retrieving accounts", "populating listboxes" etc etc) once the Main form has finished initialising it should appear BEHIND the splash screen. The splash screen should then disappear. The whole time the splash screen should remain responsive with no unpainted areas etc. It is also useful to show a "please wait..." with an increasing/decreasing number of full stops or a progress bar to show the user that the program is doing things. In 1.1 I achieved this by creating the splash screen on a different thread to the main one and then calling delegates to update the message etc. Unfortunately in .NET 2.0 this has changed. With the built in methods for showing the splash screen, it basically shows the splash screen for a predetermined amount of time and then it disappears and then creates the main form. Only then can you initialise the main form, at which point the user is confronted with a blank screen whilst the initialisation occurs. No good. With my old 1.1 way in 2.0, the program complains about crossthread exceptions all the time because the splash screen is created on a different thread. Turning them off (with control.checkforillegalcrossthreadenabled = false)causes random crashes, and isnt an ideal solution anyway. So how can I do it? I need the splash screen to be responsive to painting the whole time. I have tried putting a thread on it which updates it every 250 milliseconds, and then calls Application.DoEvents. This works fine as long as nothing else is happening, but as soon as I initialise my main form these stop as they get held up in the message queue.     - The amazing, vanishing programmatically-entered data in my DataGridView I'm trying to automatically enter some data into a row when the user first enters the row. So I created a RowEnter event handler that contains several statements like the following: _dataGrid.Rows(rowIndex).Cells(columnName).Value = newData When I do this, data actually shows up in the row when I click the row. But as soon as I tab away or click a button elsewhere on the form, the data vanishes. If I hand-enter the exact same data, I don't have this problem at all (I can click anywhere else on the form and the data remains). Anyone know what could be causing this?     - toolbar button with colour stripe Hi Ok this is probably really easy and i am just being really stupid, but how do you create a toolbar button similar to the highlight/fill or Font button as seen in microsoft products where the colour stripe changes depending on the colour selected.     - How to cancel this event Hi there, Does anyone know how to actually "abort" the event (component change) described in the following link. Apparently it's doable as mentined in the "Remarks" section but how. Alternatively, it would be better to prevent this event from being raised in the first place if anyone knows the procedure.     - Windows Forms Binding to HTMLElement Events Hello Everyone, We have a production WinForms Application that uses a WebBrowser to display readonly data. In the html document we have SPAN elements that facilitate menu selections. We also have a TABLE object that is bound to an XML Data Island, each row of the table has an option to "View Details" or "Delete" When a user clicks a SPAN object we would set the WebBrowser's Status Text to the desired command, then back to "Ready". The windows form would then capture the statustext change event and process the command. We were testing the impact IE7 has with this application and found that this solution no longer works. We have now decided to listen for the click events of these SPAN objects from within the windows form. This is working wonderful except for the SPAN objects in the databound table. Here in lies my question, how do we get the click events to fire in our windows form? Below is a snippet of code that we use to add the event handler, first for the top level menu items, then for the menu items on each row of the table.     - Record Filtering MS Visual Studio 2005 Pro, C# development: I have a child form with datagrid view showing customers/locations which is bound to text boxes, also have a second datagrid view showing workorders related to locations.     - Datagridview bound to a dataview Pardon my ignorance here for I really can't find a direct answer to my question concerning the DataGridView. I have a Winform with a DataGridView on it. Its datasource is a DataView. Life works great with the grid. I am able to sort, move columns, and edit cells by clicking on the cell and making the change. How do I update the changes to my DataView when I make a change to a cell within the grid? I'm sure there is an easy answer to this and I truly think i'm just having one of those days.     - Design Question regarding Events I'm looking for input / ideas on the following design problem: As an example for the business layer, there is a class "DataObjectHandler" with one method "Get()" that returns an initialised list of the class "DataObject". It also contains a method "Add(DataObject)" This adds the passed DataObject to the list and fires a "ListChangedEventHandler" event handler informing any subscribers that the list has changed (the event args contains the newly updated "DataObject" list). For the UI I have a simple form with two combo boxes (combo1 and combo2) and a corresponding "Add New" button (AddCombo1Btn and AddCombo2Btn) for each combo box respectively. The method "UpdateCombo1" subscribes to the "DataObjectHandler.ListChangedEventHandler" and updates combo1 list with the new list supplied in the event args. A corresponding method "UpdateCombo2" does the same, but for ComboBox2. Clicking on either button creates a new DataObject and passes it to the "DataObjectHandler.Add(DataObject)" method. This in turn fires the ListChanged Event, which in turn updates both combo boxes (as they both subscribe to the event). I've got this up and running and it appears to work fantastically, clicking either "add" button updates both combo boxes with the new list. However there is an additional requirement that if "AddCombo1Btn" fires the event then as well as updating both lists, the selected item for "combo1" should become the newly added "DataObject" (but the selected item for "combo2" should stay "as is"). Accordingly if "AddCombo2Btn" fires the event, then the selected item for "combo2" should be updated, but not "combo1". Technically the solution should scale in that the each list / button pairing maybe on different forms (but obviously sharing the same instance of "DataObjectHandler") I can think of two solutions. The first is an additional method DataObjectHandler.Add(DataObject, List<ComboBox> comboBoxes). The 2nd parameter contains a list of the comboboxes who's selected item should be updated to match the newly added DataObject. This would be added to the event args so it is passed back to the subscribing methods (whose responsibility it would be to check that list). The second solution would be to update the tag property of the combo box that corresponds to the "Add" button clicked, this would occur just before the DataObjectHandler.Add(DataObject) call. This seems to be the cleaner solution as it doesn't need anything to be passed through the event handler and back. Of course, I could extend the combo box class with a specific flag if using tag wasn't ideal.     - Client Location of Published Application When using the Publish Application option in a Windows form application in VS.Net 2005 to a file share, the client successfully installed it on their pc and can run the application. However the application.exe file can not be found on the pc and the start menu shortcut does contain a string that has file share\MyApp.application,plus some other settings. I'm using .NET Framework v1.1. >From time to time, on Windows 98 systems, I somehow manage to actually see WindowsFormsParkingWindow window. I mean, it just showed-up - with title bar and zero size (0, 0). Now, this is a bad thing, but to avoid it I want to enumerate the controls parked to this window. Furthermore, is there a way to disable this window? I mean, a way to inform the framework I don't want this window to be used (for recycling purposes or any purpose).     - Opening / Saving word doc in Web Browser control Hi I have found this control to be very handy for viewing word docs in windows forms, works nicely. I have a problem where I would like to be able to open the doc and save it elsewhere, as part of a system I am building, so the document becomes like a sys doc and not like a word doc anymore, can I attach code to the the normal save toolbar that is present in the web browser control when I open the word document?     - FolderBrowserDialog doesn't let us select folders in a FTP or HTTP sites Hi All, I'm using the FolderBrowserDialog to select a folder I want to upload. I'm unable to use this Dialog to access a folder inside a FTP or HTTP site. These sites show up in my FolderBrowser Dialog but I cannot expand them.     - Drag and drop file to list view in Vista I wrote a c# winforms application in .NET 1.1 which uses DragDrop functionality to allow a user to drag a file to a list view. It works fine in Windows XP, but in Windows Vista I get the "No drop" symbol. This holds true even when right clicking the application shortcut and choosing to run as Administrator.     - Cursor.Position I want to move the cursor in a MouseMove event callback. I'm using Cursor.Position to set the new mouse position. Unfortunately this seems to prevent the rest of the form from updating until I stop setting Cursor.Position (for example, I have a textbox and a progress bar that should update while the MouseMove event is being handled, but they don't update if I always set the Cursor.Position property.)     - Modifications to DataGridView aren't reflected in Rows[] Good morning, I'm trying to update a DataSet based on data that has been modified in a DataGridView. The DataSet isn't binded to the DataGridView because of a couple conversions. (In this case, a time interval, or TimeSpan, is stored as number of milliseconds). I haven't found an elegant way to use the DataSource feature of the DataGridView and allow the millisecond timespan representation to be displayed as a user-friendly TimeSpan. To handle this disconnection, I'm simply creating a DataTable that contains the data the way I want things to appear in the DataGridView. This works well. My problem is when I want to save the changes back to the database. After the user makes a change to a cell and hits 'enter', the "New" row below is highlighted (indicating that the change was performed on the cell / row in question). Programatically, I read in the values from the DataGridView.Rows[] collection. The values I find are the original values from before the changes were made. Is there some magic property I'm missing or certain way to get the modified rows of a DataGridView? I have found nothing in the documentation that sheds any insight. Should I just hold a reference to a DataTable locally, bind THAT to the DataGridView, then just look at the table for changes? Why aren't the Rows[] giving me my changes?     - adding a blank to a ComboBox How do you add a blank to the top of a comboBox in a Windows Form? I've done this with drop down lists in web forms but the ListItem that I used there doesn't appear to exist in a win form. I'm loading the ddlCategory comboBox with an ID(int) for value and Category(string) for Display out of a SQL DB using a SP. Once these values are loaded I want to add a blank to the top of the list and have it be selected initially. Hi everyone

It is now more than a month that i'm trying to write some code that can
drag drop a file (which is stored remotely) from my app to the
explorer.

Actually the way Windows work, i don't have the destination of the drop
and i found it impossible to to block the system until the files is
actually retrieved...

Has anyone seen some code doing that ?
