    - Windows Service and Threading What is the proper way to terminate a Thread in a Windows Service? I have a windows service which starts up three threads which run in a while loop as long as a boolean flag is set to true. These threads each sleep for X ammount of time then start processing again. Since this is a service it's basically running in an infinite loop. When the user goes to stop the service, I have been calling the Thread.Abort() method, which throws a ThreadAbortedException. I've also tried using the Thread.Interupt() method to wake any sleeping threads, but that too throws a ThreadInteruptedException. What is the proper way to kill these threads in the 30 second timeframe that the windows service framework gives a service to respond back? If catching these Exceptions are the correct way to stop the service, what is the correct way to know if the service actually dies on it's own for some reaon (i.e. god forbid locking)?     - TLB using problem I created very simple Class Library in VB 2005 (let's call it COMInterop). I set Register For COM Interop property to true to make it accessible by VB6 program. After I compiled it, I got COMInterop.dll and COMInterop.tlb files, I have no problem with using both of them on the machine where the project was compiled - TLB with VB6 clients and DLL with VB 2005 clients. I copied the tlb and dll files onto another machine and registered TLB file with regtlib.exe. I've got a message about successful registration. I created a new VB 2005 Windows Form project, added the reference to COMInterop.dll and it works fine. I created VB6 project, added a reference to this TLB. I'm trying to use it with the simple code which works with VB 2005, but produces an error in VB6: Run time error '429': ActiveX component can't create object The code in client: Private obj As COMInteropTest.COMInterop Private Sub Command1_Click() Set obj = New COMInteropTest.COMInterop 'The error occurs on this line MsgBox obj.myFunction End Sub What am I missing?     - Treeview problem I'm trying to create a treeview that will show data from access database in hierarchical way.     - Interacting with modal and modeless forms Hi all I am writing a piece of control software that monitors data from a data source and controls the data source peripherals. I am using a Modeless Form to monitor the data and to change the data source parameters in real time. I am using Modal Forms to control the peripherals, because these are popped up, used and closed again when required. My problem, is that whenever I open one of the Modal Forms, the Modeless Form no longer responds to input. I could do this in C++ / MFC by giving the Modeless Form a NULL owner, but it seems as though in DotNet a NULL owner impies the Main Application Form.     - Cached Configuration Data Hello, I have stored some new values in the .config file of my app. They were stored using a configuration object. If i read the value from the config object i can get the lastest values. But if i read the items using ConfigurationManager, i get old 1.1 behaviour, in that values appear to be cached.     - ClickOnce and login on as a different user Hello group I'm developing an C# Windows Forms application that I would like to deploy using ClickOnce. One of the computers that the application is deployed on, is a computer that is always loged on as a generic "controlroom" user. This is necessary for some of the other applications running on the computer. On my application, the user should always logon as himself or herself. Therefore I need to present a login form to the user as the first thing. I have been considering using RunAs, but I'm not sure that is possible along with ClickOnce, at least nok using the GUI of RunAs. I have looked at the Windows API LogonUser, but that seems to be requiring unsafe code permissions and FullTrust, and I was hoping that I could avoid giving those permissions to the application, especially when I'm deploying it using ClickOnce.     - FontDialog Only Allows Integrals? I've noticed that the FontDialog only allows positive integers as input when you show the dialog. Is there some reason for this? The font that it returns allows singles and I can't really find anywhere that explains why this might be.     - Bug in SaveFileDialog Hello there, I found a bug using SaveFileDialog and I was not able to find any similar issue on the web. This seems to apply to any .NET Applications using SaveFileDialog. To perform the bug: 1. Open a SaveFileDialog and save any File, e.g. TestDocument0.txt: This should create a document named TestDocument0.txt 2. Call once again the SaveFileDialog, select the TestDocument0.txt you created in the File Window: The name of the File appears in the Text Box, left of the "Open" Button. (Notice, the Selected File is still grayed in the File Window) 3. Rename the Text in this Text Box, e.g. TestDocument1.txt: (Notice, the Selected File is still grayed in the File Window) 4. Click in the File Window, but not on a folder or a file. The previously selected File is not grayed anymore, the focus is set on nothing. 5. Press the "Save" Button, you will get the following Waning: "File TestDocument0.txt already exists. Do you want to replace it" The error is obvious, it should save my file as TestDocument1.txt, and not TestDocument0.txt, as it appears on the Text Box. Could you reproduce such strange behaviour?     - usercontrol with readonly property that can be set at design time Can someone tell me if it's possible to create a property for a usercontrol, that is essentially readonly, but able to be set via the designer before runtime? I have a property for a control that I want to set essentially one time. This property is basically a static property that can change at the developer's wish, but only one time. I need to be able to reference the property later. I've tried setting the property to readonly, but that hides it from the designer properties window. I've tried various attributes to no avail (i.e. DesignOnly(true)). When I do this, I cannot set the property at design time(the value doesn't hold).     - Accelerator keys broken in Winforms I'm having a problem with accelerator keys (also sometimes refered to as shortcut keys or mnemonics) on Winforms. To reproduce, simply do this: 1. create a new C# "Windows Application" project (I'm using VS2005) 2. Add a button to the form and change its default Text from "button1" to "&button1" Now run the app. Press the alt key on the keyboard and the keyboard cue is displayed (the 'b' becomes underlined) as it should. Press the alt key again and the underline does not go away. You will also notice that pressing the 'b' key fires the button's click event regardless of whether the alt key was ever pressed, or whether the cue is visible. Surely this isn't "by design" (Menus don't work this way! OS supplied dialogs don't work this way!) Any pertinent suggestions on how to work around this would be welcome. In developing a smart client application, I'm lead to beleive that only assemblies that have changed get updated during the next time the application runs. But if you have a assembly that is referneced by other assemblies, don't they need to get recompiled which changes there version which in return everything needs to get downloaded again.     - Getting Icon of Files All - How can I get an icon associated with a particular file extension and then get the icon displayed in a picturebox? I have an app with a picturebox. The picturebox displays pictures and other files stored in SQL. If the SQL data is an image, it displays the image but if it is, say a word doc, it displays an image I created that says "Not an Image". I would like to display the icon associated with the particular file type inspectead. So, when a user adds a word doc, the icon is shown in the picturebox or adobe or whatever else the user might save to the database.     - hiding form from alt-tab In the 1.1 version of the framework setting ShowInTaskbar to false and FormBorderStyle to none was enough to stop a form from showing up in the alt-tab list.
