    - Cancelling Form.Load event I load some data from the database during the forms load event. If this load fails, then I need to bring up the error message and abort loading the form. How do I do this in .NET 2.0? There doesn't seem to be a way of cancelling the forms construction from within the load event. Also if an error occurs I don't want a blank form displayed under the error message that then vanishes after the user clicks OK.     - TreeNode editing and clipboard problem I have Cut/Copy/Paste in the menu, that works with my TreeNode derived objects and not with text. When someone enters the editing of the node text, TreeView process the Ctrl+C and puts the marked text into clipboard. I wish my functions do the same with menu Cut/Copy whenn the node is editing (it should do the same as shourcuts Ctrl+C). I can copy whole node text, but not only the marked text or the text that was just changed. How can i do this, especialy if the text is editted and only a pice is marked?     - Controls Hide/Show display performance Hi I have a quite complex GUI in C#, where i save space by using many Panels, Pictures which hosts controls. When the user needs a function, i hide the "olds" panel, pictures.. then show the necessary ones.     - combobox with command items Hi I want to have a combobox with some commands in it and a data source. Basically the list should look like command1 command2 ----------- data1 data2 data3 To solve this problem i decided to derive my own combo box form standard ComboBox control. I exposed 2 properties in this class 1) List of CommandItems 2) ArrayList as data source Now i tried to merge these 2 sources as 1 source and set the data source for the base class. I also set the DrawMode to OwnerDrawVariable and subscribed to DrawItem event. I thought that i would be able to draw the items on my own. This way i am able to insert the separator between command items and the data items. However when i do this i am unable to set the DisplayMember of the combobox it doesn't work at all. Additionaly i also am thinking even if i am able to do that it has to be different for data list and the command list.     - Anchoring issue. Lets say I have a control at the bottom of my form and I have it set to anchor Top, Bottom, Left, Right That does exactly what I want it to do.... Ok here's my issue. I have recently taken the contents from that form and placed them on a user control instead. I set the output type to dll for the project with the user control. I implement my own interface, compile, and then place the dll in a plugins directory of my host app. My host app then rakes the directory, finds any types that implement the interface and when it finds one it loads that user control as a new tab in the host apps tab control. The interface requires that there be an init function. The host always runs this when it finds the dll and passes in DB information. Inside the init function I have tried to also set the user controls anchor like so: this.Anchor = ((System.Windows.Forms.AnchorStyles) ((((System.Windows.Forms.AnchorStyles.Top | System.Windows.Forms.AnchorStyles.Bottom) | System.Windows.Forms.AnchorStyles.Left) | System.Windows.Forms.AnchorStyles.Right))); I'm not sure if the syntax is 100% in this posting because I've commented and uncommented and recommented so many times trying different combinations. Just know that I'm setting it the same as if I were using the designer. Top, Bottom, Left, Right... Now the Host app has a tab control as I've already stated. It has it's anchor set to Top, Bottom, Left, Right so that it expands if the form does. Now when it loads, everything runs off the screen. So let me lay out the context more clearly: Host Form - Tab control - Anchor Top, Bottom, Left, Right - User Control found at runtime - Anchor Top, Bottom, Left, Right - Control - anchro Top, Bottom, Left, Right I can create the same app with just a tab control and place the end control right on a new tab page and anchor it. That works as expected and everything expands as it should. but once I put the control on a user control and then load that dynamically into the tab control setting it's anchor, everything expands way off to the right and bottom.     - How can I use C++ codes with .NET Framework codes? I would be pleased if someone gives me a general idea; how I am going to do this. I am using visual C++ .NET 2003. I made a simple program using conventional C++ code. This program accepts data from the user, does some calculations and outputs the result back to the user using the console. Now, I want to use the .NET Framework to interact with the user through Forms, Dialog Boxes and Controls. I managed to create all the forms that I need to interact with the user and they work very well together. But, now I want to use the first program that I made from conventional C++ with .NET Framework.     - How to tell if file is text based I want my application to load any file that is text based (php, txt, rtf, asp, etc) - - just not any binary file In the Open file dialog, that's easy, but I want users to be able to load the files by drag/drop - - so therefore, I will need to check for the types of files.     - MaskedTextBox with negative double numbers I am trying to use a MaskedTexBox to accept positive and negative DECIMAL/DOUBLE numbers. I tried by setting the Mask to a custom mask of "0000.00" but that allows for no negatives. I tried with "+00000.00" but the same problem. According to the documentation there is a design variable ValidatingType. But at least in VC# Express 2005 such property does not appear in the list of properties at design time! So what I did was to manually set the ValidatingType to typeof(double) in the constructor. But the same problem persists. Any ideas? or was this some great half-baked idea?     - MDI Child Window Toolstrip does not go away Hi, I have an MDI child window with a toolstrip contained in a ToolStripContainer. The MDI parent also has a Toolstrip contained in another ToolStripContainer. If I drag my ToolStrip onto the parents ToolStripContainer and then close the child window, the toolstrip does not go away. This is not a merge issue. I am not using merge.     - Dbl-Click to load a file when app is already running I'm using the GetCommandLineArgs (VB.Net 2005) in my form load event GetOutsideFile(Environment.GetCommandLineArgs()) so that, when I have files associated with my app, and double click on a file, they will run the app and load the file in it. However, when the app is already loaded, double-clicking on a file will not load it, since the application is already running, and the only reference is in the frmMain's load subroutine.     - weird problem with ComboBox - DataSource contains data, but the Items collection stays empty I created a custom control which simply is a data-bound ComboBox. It has a custom property that causes an ArrayList of KeyValuePair elements to be passed to the DataSource property. It also sets the DisplayMember and ValueMember properties. What's weird, is the fact that my control sometimes works fine and sometimes it doesn't. I have no idea why, but when I put on Form1 everything is fine, while on Form2 the Items collection stays empty, although the DataSource property contains data and it is exactly the same data (pulled from the database in the same way) that I use in case of Form1. Here is my problem, in the simplest scenario: - an Access 2000 format database (created with Access 2003) - a simple table that contains one single field defined as Number, Decimal, 18,2 - VS2005 standard, C# - a data source / dataset that cotains that simple Access table - a DataGridView, created by drag and drop, with all the helper objects (adapter, navigator etc) that edits that simple table - WinXPSP2 with ***Regional Options in Control Panel set to Romanian*** , with no other customization And here's the problem: what magic do I have to do to enter decimal numbers in that grid and save them in the database? Because as long as I type in 1,23 (given that the decimal separator in Romanian Regional Options is the comma), the grid displays it correctly, I can save it to the daabase, but when I reload the data by reopening the form, my number is 123 (and it really IS 123 in the database!).     - HttpWebRequest and Vista Business I am using the following code to send a request to a web site. It works fine on XP and Vista Home, but on a machine running Vista Business it gives the error, ConnectFailure. I can browse to the site in IE7 on the same laptop with no problem.     - Expired certificates in the clickonce manifest. My VB apps written in Visual Studio 2005 are starting to have their certificate expiration date older than the current date.     - No more type ahead searching for treenodes in VS 2005? In Visual Studio 2003 one of the default treeview behaviors I relied on was the ability to do type ahead searching for treenodes. Like if my treeview had nodes for the fifty states, typing "ark" would make the treeview select the Arkansas node. But, now that I've upgraded my project to VS 2005, typing "ark" makes the treeview select Alabama, then Rhode Island, then Kansas. Has anyone else noticed this?     - Installing VS 2003 after VS 2005 Hey guys, Is it possible to install VS 2003 on a machine that already has VS 2005 installed? I am not sure what the ramifications would be.     - Settings for Windows Service I have a requirement to create a windows service application that will need have settings (e.g. list values, connection settings, etc.) stored externally (i.e. not hard coded). To allow administrators to manage the settings I'll be creating a windows form application, very simple one, that will run in the system tray and when a setting needs to change (once in a blue moon) the administrator can right click and change/add a setting through a dialog window. The dialog will give the user the ability to restart the service so the settings can be read by the service at start up again. Here is my question. To store the settings i'm inclined to add an app.config to the windows service and have the windows form app read/save settings to the config file.     - Teredo tunnelling pseudo interface I just checked in 'Device Manager' to see if everything was OK, and saw a question mark against Teredo tunnelling pseudo interface. When I clicked on properties I got the message - 'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged.     - UserControl inheritance and the designer I've created a base class from which many usercontrols will inherit. The base class contains declarations for controls and event handlers. A derived user control contains the actual form controls (labels, textboxes, etc.). Everything seems to be working fine at run time but at at design time, the designer cannot display the derived control unless I place declarations for the various form controls in the designer code. See the code below for an example. Note that if I remove the comment from the line 'Friend Shadows Label1 As Label in the derived control, the designer is happy and works fine but of course this effectively breaks the link between the controls and their handlers in the base class. If I retain the comment, the designer gives the error "The variable 'Label1' is either undeclared or was never assigned." How do I overcome this? Is there a way that I can fool the designer without commenting/uncommenting code? Am I simply doing this all wrong? Bill E.     - seems pretty simple but.. maybe not. (if this is the wrong ng, plz point me to the right one).. i'm trying to add simple text find capability to a tool at work and am having problems. i want it to work just like Notepad - that is the Find dialog remains in focus after clicking the Find button and at the same time, the found text in the edit control is hilited and remains so even while the edit control does not have focus. i can get the text to hilite alright but it's only visible if i set focus to the edit control just after calling the Find method. this is totally opposite of what Notepad is doing. does anybody have any idea how Notepad accomplishes this?     - Running ReportViewer report in another thread using BackgroundWorker Hi: I'm trying to give user something to look at while a ReportViewer based report runs. It takes a while because app connects to data over the internet. Problem is report locks-ups when launched in DoWork event. Backgoundworker seem to work with non-visual stuff. Is the problem because report renders in a Window? A simpler approach is just pop-up a nonmodal form and release after report finishes. That works, but controls look transaparent.     - Application type question Hi My vb winform app updates between site sql server and in house access db. The app needs to always run and is in the start-up of client's sbs 2003 (windows 2003) server. Problem is if client restart server and forget to login the app does not run. I am resisting doing it as a service as a service has some development restriction as well as installation complications making it difficult to debug too among other things. What is the best solution to this situation? Should I go the service route?     - ListView CheckBoxes hello everybody, I had a problem with a ListView - Object.. I want to list some stuff in a ListView, I created some columns and startet to fill it. In the properties of the ListView I set "VirtualMode" to "true" .. so I could define the values for the columns. I want to select each entry by an checkbox, but the ListView didn't draw the checkbox. If I set the ListViewItem.Checked = true, then I will see the Checkboxes .. but if I don't set it to true, then there will be only the entries without the Checkboxes.     - cross-thread UI updating? hello, i am a long time asp.net developer, but new to winform programming. in the application ive been assigned, the mainform spawns a new thread to fetch a bunch of data from a method. this takes time, which is why its been placed into its own thread, allowing the rest of the ui to be usable: Private m_getDashboardDataThread As Thread ...     - Drag and drop image? Environment: VS05, C# I'm trying to come up with a good way to create and handle drag and drop images like those that are created by the File Explorer. My first attempt was to use ImageList but this only seems to work within a single control. Drag images are limited to the control in which the drag begins. Would someone be so kind as to suggest a better way to create and show a drag image that will be created by the control in which the drag begins but will still be visible in other controls?     - Creating Files / PDFs I am not sure where to post this (I think this is appropriate). I have an application that loops through a dataview, and opens a PDF template, and populates the fields of the PDF, and saves the files on a network drive. Ih yeah, the application is a network app. Anyways, when the app runs, it will loop through the dataview (employee records) and create the files. For some users the app will only create 1 employee PDF, however for other users the app will create all 20 employee pdfs. I thought it may be issues with the creation routine, however it works some times, and not others for select users... Any ideas? I am mainly looking for debugging suggestions.
