    - IDE design problems??? Is there any way to make the forms designer work? A simple but complicated problem. I am designing a "grid" type user control. It is composed of panels (as a column) with a label (header) at the top, a control (to be used as a "cell") and there is to be a splitter between each column. I know that each panel and splitter must be docked left. So I add a panel, make the dock left , so far ok. Now add a splitter. It goes to the extreme left. Why??? Ok I will try it in reverse. Same result. Why?? Ok I send the panel to the back and we are in business. Add panel, add splitter and away we go. Now I need to add a new column (panel). How can I add this in the middle of existing controls??? I have been trying this for several hours and no luck ( should not have to rely on luck should I). I have looked at the generated code for a clue but no such luck (there is that word again). Any ideas or a designer that will accomplish this??     - Detecting Internet Connection I'm facing a problem where I need to verify that my windows forms application has access to the internet before it can do anything. Currently, the only way I can think of is by creating a HttpWebRequest and point it to the specified URL I wish to connect to later on, and if that throws an error, I know I don't have an internet connection. Is this the best method for detecting an internet connection, or is there some sort of routine that I need to follow that is more tuned for performance? Thanks for your help!     - Splitter Class Heya I am having trouble using a Splitter to divide a Frame horizontally. For some reason the top panel automatically fills the entire Frame area, while the splitter lets me move the bottom panel up over the top panel. What I expect to occur is to have both panels resize to fit the available space when I adjust the Splitter. I attempted to implement this code myself only to have very weird behavior (which mostlikely had to do with the order the events were firing).     - Transparancy I have a picturebox on my form, and I need to put other controls (like a panel) over the picture box, but I need the graphic to show through the panel and other controls. From my searching, I believe I have learned that this is due to a limitation / bug as controls do not allow other controls to show through. I have heard (read) that some people have overcome this though - how can I do this? Vb.Net examples / sites would be preferred.     - RichTextBox and Tables Hi, I have problems with the Windows.Forms.RichtextBox Control of the VS. I have a text that is written with WordPad. In this text there are tables. The cells in the tables are holding multiple lines. When I copy & paste the whole text, including the table, the table does not show up properly in the richtextbox control. The cells are only single line. The text in the cells does not wrap. The text in the cells actually leaves the cell.     - Adding controls to a panel in a UserControl? I'm developing a UserControl that has 2 panels - one docked top and the other fill. I want to be able (at design time) to drop controls on the panel docked to fill, but when I do so, the newly added control is added to the base UserControl's control collection and not the "fill" panel. Intercepting the OnControlAdded event and changing the parent of the new control just gives me an error message "'child' is not a child of this parent". Bringing the new control to the front doesn't work either as it's still parented by the base control and is "painted over" at runtime by the fill panel.     - Strange ComboBox Behavior I have two ComboBoxes on a form both set to a different datasource. When retrieving the SelectedText from one the other's SelectedItem property goes to -1. If I remove one or the other they work fine independantly. If they were both set to the same datasource I might understand but they are connected to two seperate datasources. Any ideas?     - No-Touch deployment - IEExec - Duplicate Entries in Assembly Cache - Strongly Typed Datasets - InvalidCastException I've been struggling with a problem using No-Touch Deployment for 10 days now. Searching the newsgroups, I can see that people have been experiencing parts of the problem, but I haven't seen any posts about my particular circumstances. I have a client/server database application. Both Client & Server are running .NET Framework 1.1.4322. The client is a VB.NET winform application. On the server, I run a VB.NET Web Service that accesses a MS ACCESS database and returns Strongly Typed Datasets (STD). The Web Service uses the SOAP serializer to convert the STDs into XML (Marshal By Object) and my VB client app converts the returned SOAP messages back from XML to STD objects. So far, so good. My client/server application works perfectly and is humming along until one day my boss suggests that wouldn't it be good if we distributed the client application using No-Touch Deployment. I place the client app on the server and run it from within Internet Explorer. I start getting Exceptions when I run the client app: "System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid". The exceptions happen only with Web Service methods that return Strongly Typed Datasets (Web Service methods that return untyped Datasets or other types of data work fine). Every now and again, I compile a version of my client app that works. If I recompile again with no changes, the new version doesn't work. A version of myClientApp.exe that works once, always works. A version that doesn't work, I can usually eventually get working eventually by emptying various caches, restarting the server, etc. Once I get the .exe working once, it continues to work. I conclude that it's not my code that is the problem, but something about the assembly & versioning. Following various suggestions on newsgroups: (1) I set the version number manually in AssemblyInfo.vb so it is not automatically incremented with each compile <Assembly: AssemblyVersion("0.0.1.2")> (2) I set the http channel in the Web Service to make sure the SOAP serialization is on: <channel ref="http"> <serverProviders> <provider ref="wsdl" /> <formatter ref="soap" typeFilterLevel="Full" /> <formatter ref="binary" typeFilterLevel="Full" /> </serverProviders> <clientProviders> <formatter ref="binary" /> </clientProviders> </channel> (3) Whenever I test the application, I clear out both the download assembly cache (with gacutil /cdl) and IE's browser cache. I also reset IIS from time to time. NOW HERE'S THE WEIRD PART. By studying IIS's log, I see that whenever I launch the app using No Touch Deployment, I see that IEExec is making over 20 GET requests of the server. Even though my http request is for myClientApp.exe, IEExec also tries to get myClientApp.exe.config, myClientApp.DLL, myClientApp.resources.DLL, etc. Most of these time out with 404 errors (no wonder it takes so long to launch), but TWO GET requests actually succeed: "myClientApp.exe" and "myClientApp.EXE" (spelled the same but with different case sensitivity). Checking the Global Assembly Cache with gacutil /ldl, I see that there are that two copies identical copies of the assembly (same name & version#). More useful is the IE InvalidExceptionError Window which also shows that there are two copies of myClientApp assembly except one has the lower case extension .exe and the other has the has the upper case .EXE extension.     - Using icon file I've modified the icon file in my winforms project and am now using it so that when someone drags a shortcut for the app onto the desktop the icon shows up. This seems to be working fine except that if the user drags the shortcut onto the Quick Launch portion of the Task Bar then the default icon shows instead of the one I made. Does anyone know why this is happening? H I have 1 regular windows form with a datagrid which is populated from an SQL Server with data adapter etc The 2nd form has a Crystal Report Viewer on it. I've created the report.rpt, set the datasource to the DataSet.xsd in the report with the fields where I want them.     - Losing icons from .resx file I'm losing icons from a .resx file, and I'm not sure why. I'm adding the icons using ResEditor (the resource editor that ships unbuilt with VS.Net). I add the icons, save the .resx file, and all seems well. If I reopen the .resx file, the icons are there, just as expected. But after a couple of compiles, the icons are gone. It I reopen the .resx file, they are no longer there.     - .NET Framework form creation/swap-space problem? Hi all, I have a really odd problem with some Visual Basic .NET 2003 code; I have a program that creates a number of windows which contain RichTextBox, Timers (disabled) and menus. The code runs fine and creates the windows as required, BUT if the program is left to do nothing for several hours, when it is brought back into focus it generates an exception error (Object reference not set to instance of an object - this always coincides with a LOT of disk activity) when it tries to access a window handle. The really odd thing is, if the excepton is trapped with a breakpoint, examining the values it's trying to manipulate (and which presumably causes the exception) reveals nothing wrong. The code is: Dim NewForm As New Form2 Dim MyWindowHandle as System.IntPtr NewForm.Show() Try MyWindowHandle = NewForm.Handle ' this occassionally goes "bang" Catch ex As Exception MsgBox("Exception") ' by this point, NewForm.Handle has a valid handle in it. End Try If I put a breakpoint on the MsgBox line, when the code generates an exception, NewForm.Handle has a valid value; I can see absolutely no reason why this code causes an exception. The NewForm.Show() works without a problem. I wondered if my code was hitting some resource-limit in XP (like the limit on the number of window handles that existed in Windows 3.1) so I tried running my "create window" code 1,000 times via a loop, and it worked fine. In general ("real") use, the code doesn't get called more than about 30 times. The code is far more likely to crash if it's run in Debug mode via VS itself; if it's compiled in Release mode and run outside of VS, the crashes are less frequent. My theory is that if the program is left doing nothing for several hours, XP or .NET swaps the code to disk and when the program's brought back into focus, it's retrieved from disk but (I'm guessing here) the code starts executing _before_ all the bits and pieces are restored to RAM, hence the exception. By the time the breakpoint is activated, everything's in place and that's why my VS 'watches' on the variables show nothing amiss. If my theory is correct, is there some way a program can test whether it (and its objects) are all present and correct before accessing things like window handles? A couple of other programs I've written also exhibit this problem. Since things like MS Word and Excel don't go horribly wrong when brought into focus, surely there's something Microsoft & others are doing that I'm not (like not writing programs that use the .NET Framework, I suppose ;-) ). Changing the code to look like the following seemed to confirm my theory: Dim NewForm As New Form2 Dim MyWindowHandle as System.IntPtr NewForm.Show() Try MyWindowHandle = NewForm.Handle ' this occassionally goes "bang" Catch ex As Exception MsgBox("Exception") ' This gets called fairly often Thread.Sleep(10000) ' sleep 10 seconds Try MyWindowHandle = NewForm.Handle Catch ex As Exception MsgBox("Exception #2") 'This rarely gets called End Try End Try The first "MyWindowHandle = NewForm.Handle" crashes more than the 2nd one, yet they are both the same thing. My PC is running Windows XP Home Edition SP1 with all the latest fixes, I'm using Visual Studio 2003 Standard Edition, with the latest patch (the 75MB one released last year to apply "documentation updates" (75 megabytes of them??)).     - Form Loading very slow Hi All I have a Winforms App writing in vb.net IT has a Main MDI Form called frmMain. When ever I create a new object of an existing form and then show it , it takes a long time to render when a child form creates another form object. All I?m doing is calling the form object's show or showDialog methods. This looks very ugly and unprofessional.     - Problem in Zero Deployement Hello Folks, I am trying to develop a Proof Of Concept for a Zero Deployment Created a simple winform. Created a simple WebService. Call a method from WebService on a button click and display results in the TextBoxx So far so good, Everything works as expected but when I try to deploy it over the web I am gettingh the following error. An Exception 'System.IO.FileLoadException' has occured in IEExec.exe This error happens first time when I click on the Exe(http://servername/appdir/appname.exe) It asks me if I would like to debug I decline and next time I try to load the application works fine. This happens also when I try the same on my local machine(I got everything on the same box). And goes away when I try for the second time. It happens after everytimg I compile the application. I have a work around as I explained but I would like find out from the Great Minds what is causing this error.     - Listview Item.Selected not populating Listview.SelectedItems collection Hi, I'm having some trouble getting the Listview.Items[0].Selected = true to populate the SelectedItems collection. The code that I'm using is: CtrlTransferSettings tester = CtrlTransferSettings() if (pos < tester.lstStrings.Items.Count) { tester.lstStrings.Focus(); tester.lstStrings.Items[0].Selected = true; tester.lstStrings.Select(); } What's happening is that the SelectedItems.Count is staying at 0, even after setting Items[0].Selected to true. While in debug mode, if I go look at the "Autos" listing and drill-down to the lstStrings.SelectedItems.Count property it updates itself and then lists the count as 1 and everything works correctly. But, it will only update if I drill down the 'autos list' in debug-mode. If I just run the code, the count always stays at 0. Is this a bug in the ListView control? Or am I missing a step? Has anyone ever used the propertygrid in conjunction with the error
provider? My app uses the errorprovider extensively in other areas of the
app, including bound grids, and I'd like to keep the same look and feel for
areas that use the property browser. Is this feasible?

Unfortunately, PropertyGrid does not support using with ErrorProvider now.
However it sounds like a good idea to me, if you wish to have this feature
in the furture version VS.NET, you may submit a feedback to our product
team, so that they could take your feedback into consider when planning the
next version of VS.NET.
