It has a polling loop and not surprisingly this is the part that keeps = doing it. I can watch the memory = usage of my app go up and never down. So mostly I've been ensuring that I never create an object in one of = these loops. But I thought that the garbage collector would deal with these objects = once they go out of scope .. and I dont know any other way except the = above snippet to ensure I dont cross thread for the control update. Will the garbage collector keep my memory under control if I use it = implicitly ??? or am I doing something fundementally flawed when = marshalling threads ?     - Windows Installer projects adding to startup. There is a MSN like windows application developped in C#, for which i have created a setup (installer) project using visual studio 2003, and the setup works fine for me. I am writing a desktop application that uses multiple GUI threads to interact with the user. Secondary GUI thread creates a main form for this thread, having application's main form as its parent and calls System.Windows.Forms.Application.Run() with this newly created form. The problem is that, under certain conditions (described below) secondary GUI thread strangely crashes after it has exited the 'threadstart' function. The crash is 'Unhandled access violation exception' (0xc000000a) in ntdll.dll with the following call stack: ntdll.dll!_RtlFreeThreadActivationContextStack@0() + 0x1eda4 kernel32.dll!_ExitThread@4() + 0x39 kernel32.dll!_BaseThreadStart@8() + 0x3d My environment is .NET 1.1, Microsoft Windows XP SP2. And yes, it crashes on another machines, too. Condition for crash is that thread crashes only after I create and display a modal dialog box (another custom form), heaving main form for GUI thread #2 as Parent. This dialog box is used to display messages to the user instead of System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox (it has enhanced functionality like "Don't show this anymore" checkbox and timeout timer allowing it to be dismissed if user haven't clicked any buttons. When I switch back to System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox everything is fine. As this issue occurs in a big solution, I created new simple little CrashTest project to simulate this behavior and isolate my problem, but so far I haven't succeeded.     - Good "pattern" for data entry forms... I am new to .NET Windows Forms but am currently using Visual Studio 2005 primarily with VB.NET. I am in the process of creating an application that is going to have several different forms that allow for editing records in a table in my SQL Server 2005 database, each form serving a different purpose and showing some same and some different fields. Let's say it's a table called Tickets. My question is this... It should be noted that there are business rules associated with Tickets, and the fields contained therein. Can you suggest a pattern for these data editing/entry forms which will allow for creating new records, deleting existing records, and updating existing records? The pattern would include things like 1) how I should get and store data for the current record while user is working on it, 2) How should data be populated into controls on the forms (e.g. databound vs. manually filled in from some class or dataset, 3) how should I implement business rules, 4) how I should persist data out to database, etc. Any guidance would be very much appreciated.     - Show method of Panel is very slow Hi all, I'm looking at trying to improve the performance of showing a bunch of controls on a panel. I have a class that extends Panel. In that class, I do the following: this.SuspendLayout(); this.Hide(); //add controls to "this" AddControls(); this.ResumeLayout(); this.Show(); I have placed timing code in the above and the invocation of the Show method is extremely slow (relatively speaking to everything else). All of the other operations (including my custom AddControls method) take less than half a second. Meanwhile Show always takes anywhere from a second and a half to two seconds. I have to use the above ordering in order to ensure the Panel gets scroll bars to display properly since each invocation to the above code can result in a completely different set of controls (ranging from 1 control to 50 or more controls). Also, if I don't use Hide first, then the insertion of the controls can end up taking over 2 seconds. The only paths I can think of pursuing are either: a) finding some other way to get the Panel to figure out how much it needs to scroll (i.e. something like Invalidate), and/or b) determining why the show takes so long on each of contained controls Any suggestions on how I could pursue A or B or if there is an option C?     - Strange resizing problem with datagrid control I have a standard windows datagrid on my windows form and a custom combo box datagrid column as one of the columns in the datagrid. Sometimes when I start scrolling the datagrid it goes into a strange resizing mode and lets me change the size of the datagrid at runtime while I hold down my mouse instead of scrolling. It's really strange and seems to be related to the custom combo box datagrid column that I'm using. Any ideas as to what I should look for to fix this?     - Found GDI leak in TreeView (anyone know about it?) I have found what seems to be a leak of GDI resources in the .NET TreeView. I'm not entirely sure it's the .NET code or the underlying OS Common control but here's the skinny: If you use the Checkboxes property and set it to true on a TreeView it will leak 1 or 2 bitmaps and 2 memDCs every time you create and dispose of such a treeview. Our application has a browser-like UI parts of the UI are changing as controls get removed and destroyed. This leak eventually leaks too many GDI resources resulting in a crash. I was using the GDIUsage tool posted at http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/03/01/GDILeaks/default.aspx to verify this and I put together a small app that exhibits the behavior. Start a new project, create a new form and paste this into your code to try it out. Click the create a tree, then the middle button to remove/dispose/GC. You'll notice that the tree with the checkboxes leaks resources and the one without checkboxes leaks nothing. We are on VS2k3 using .NET 1.1 SP1.     - Capturing mouse events (Mouse up and down on the desktop) Hi, I am trying to capture the mouse events when the user clicks on the desktop not the winform. I looked at the mouse_event function but MSDN documentation says that it is suppressed in win NT/2000/XP. What I am trying to do is to get print screen for a section on the desktop every number of seconds. And I want the user to be able to select that region. Any help will be appreciated.     - Smart Client Fails When Run On Machine With .NET 2.0 I have a Smart Client application that was written in .NET 1.1 long before .NET 2.0 ever came out. It works great. It uses web services and because we have many development environments, it dynamically gets the base Url to construct the Url for the web services by simply calling Application.ExecutablePath. Like I said, this all works great on a computer with .NET 1.1 Framework installed, but it now fails on a computer that has both .NET 1.1 and recently installed .NET 2.0! So much for Microsoft's side by side execution!     - Saving settings to app.config using C#? Hi, How do I save updated values for Application Settings defined with an Application scope? I created the Application Settings using the Project Properties dialog in VS2005. I am trying to create a dialog box where users can save their preferences. The dialog reads values from the app.config, then update those values. I want these setting to apply to all users of the application.     - CancelButton & ShowDialog Hello there, I have a form that gets shown using the ShowDialog() method. This form then has it's accept and cancel button properties set. If hte user hits the cancel button / hits ESC, the form is closed and they're returned to the parent form. If the use then clicks the accept button / hits enter, a different part of the form become enabled for them to work with. Here's where I'm running into a bit of a problem: When I enable this new part of the form, I also change the forms Accept & Cancel button properties to a different set of buttons to save / cancel data changes. If the user hits the second cancel button, no changes occur, the new part of the form becomes disabled again, and the control focus is returned to first part of the form (which was also disabled when the second part was enabled). However, in my testing, if the user hits the ESC key, the form is closed no matter what is in the button event handler. From my trial and error testing, it seems that this is a global property of any dialog that is displayed using ShowDialog, and has it's CancelButton property set. Now, I've coded up a work around for this by having the cancel button set a form variable, and then writing a Closing event handler to check to see if that variable is set.     - link two datagridviews? hi, i have two tables, related by a one to many relationship. i want a form with both tables showing, and when i click on a record in the 'one' datagridview, i want the 'many' view to show only the related records. also...i want to be able to see all the records in the 'many' view when i want. and...i want both the 'one' and 'many' views to have navigation menu strip. i've been searching around and have created a relation between the two table adapters, but am not sure how to make the form behave the way i want? i would think this could be pretty automatic, so i am holding off writing code for click events until i hear if there is a better way. thanks!     - Form resource files Hi there. I apolgize for posting this again (from June 2nd) but I've been researching for many days now with no success. I have an app that will be reading arbitrary ".resx" or "resources" files passed on the command line for instance. Given only a resource file IOW, does anyone know: 1) How the app can determine if the passed resource file contains (localized) form resources (i.e., it stores a form) 2) If it does contain (localized) form resources, how can I then generate that form dynamically Note that the native .NET utility "Winres.exe" is able to do this but I can't figure out how (not without using techniques that appear to be undocumented).     - ClickOnce and installaion icon When a ClickOnce app is being installed there is a window that says "Installing" which has the application name, an icon (defult square windows icon) and a progress bar. Our app does have a custom icon set,but it doesn't get used in this windows. I have looked all over, even checking into custom comman line build of the manifest, but don't see how to get OUR icon into that window during installation/updating.     - Caching Application Block fails to initialize Hi. I'm trying to use the Caching Application Block in a Windows Forms application. I've configured it and all worked fine. But after some tests it does not work anymore. When I call the method CacheFactory.GetCacheManager("Application Cache Manager"), it throws an exception with the following message: "Could not find file 'Application\2085804222\Val'." The problem is not the name of the cache because it was working. I don't know whether there is a limit for the cache, but I couldn't get it working.     - Dataviewgrid horizontal scrollbar not appearing? I have the scrollbars property of my grid set to "both". When I have lots of records, the vertical scroll appears ok, but if the user resizes columns wider so they go off the side of the form, the horizontal scrollbar never appears.     - Binding, combo and 2 dataset Hello, The situation, I have 2 tables(TABLE1 and TABLE2), the first one with all the information, the second one has the language code(fields LAN_ID, LAN_COD), the first column is a foreign key in the first table. Most of the online examples for datagrids are for webforms, so I didn't get much useful info from my search. I did learn enough to have the D column from Excel (composed of true or false values) show as a checkbox column in the datagrid. What I want to know is how to update excel so if a user checks a box in that column, the proper row in the spreadsheet is updated.     - datagridview column sort question I'm using a windows form in Vb.net 2.0. I have a datagridview that is populated with data. It is for viewing only, i have turned of allowing edits, adding, deleteing and column reorg. when i click on the datagridview and go to edit columns and select a column and look at the SortMode, it's set to automatic. However, when i run the app and click on that column (with data in the grid) it doesn't sort, it doesn't have the little markers on the column header either. I understand that you can code behind to get the data to sort, but I was thinking this was suppose to work as well. anyone know what I'm not doing. seems if the sortmode is on automatic it should sort them.     - "Re" Configure DataSet with Wizard Once you have created a dataset in the Data Sources tab, there does not seem to be a way to change the Data Connection. When you open the Configure DataSet Wizard for the second time you begin on the second screen (the first is the "Choose Your Data Connection" which is not enabled). Subsequent refreshes always refer to the Connection established during creation in the designer. However, what happens if your development environment changes and you need to point to a different connection? You don't want to delete the datasource and start all over. Isn't there a way to change the connection which occurs at design time and therefore governs the refresh? Changing the connection at runtime is not a problem, just change the entry in My.Setting. When a user selects an item in the dropdown, I am trimming the value and making some changes to the value and setting ComboBox.Text equal to the new value. I know this is possible with other components, but am curious as to what BackgroundWorker can do. 1) All the documentation indicates a single DoWork. Can I assign multiple delegates to the DoWork event? It seems like I ought to be able to since it is a general event. 2) If I do, will it spawn a thread for each delegate? The events can fire sequentially. 3) Do I need a RunWorkerCompleted delegate for each DoWork delegate? Here is where the simple utility afforded by BackgroundWorker starts to break down. I am reading and converting hundreds of files and what I want to do is have 3-5 threads working on this (with the ability for the user to cancel all of the work). For example: I have a datagrid that is filtered on Level. The records in the datagrid show only those records. These are records 50-54. On a form, there is a button, that when clicked loads a user control with ShowDialog; btn_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { ucForm1 UCForm1 = new ucForm1(); UCForm1.ShowDialog(this.ParentForm); .... } in the ucForm1.cs there is a Load event defined; ucForm1_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { ..... } When the app runs and the user clicks the button, the dialog form appears but the the load event is never triggered. Does the Load event not get fired when a form is presented using the ShowDialog method? If it doesn't, is there another event I can use to run the code that I wanted to run in the load event?     - Microsoft Feedback Center Bug: .NET User Control errors after installing Some of you may already be aware of this problem, I directed one previous poster to this bug some weeks ago. I reported this bug April 12th. It is now ranked third!!! But, after 6 weeks, Microsoft have responded by resolving the bug as "Not Reproducible" not once, but twice!! I know it is reproducible, every one I have asked has been able to reproduce it. The bug is this. If you statically embed a .NET Forms UserControl into web pages using OBJECT tags, Internet Explorer will blow up once you install the ActiveX disablement patch/patches KB912812 (and the subsequent rollup). Depending on the version of .NET you have, Internet Explorer will a) crash (.NET 2.0), or b) fail to load/unload the UserControl correctly leaving orphan controls strewn over subsequent web pages (.NET 1.1). This is a serious problem which MUST be affecting consumers of .NET Forms UserControls right now. Not everyone will have been able (or even desire to) rejig web sites and other material delived as web pages to use dynamic loading techniques. Anyone affected by this, please reply. I need some noise to stop this bug from being ignored / swept under the carpet. Does anyone know of other channels than the Feedback Center I and others affected can pursue? For the record, my team have reluctantly moved to dynamic loading. But this comes at a cost when authoring pages. I am continuing to agitate for this bug because I opened it and if I dont pursue it, others can't. That's the way the Feedback Center works. This is how I am currently doing it: 1. Added the COM component Microsoft web browser to the form. This actually generate a couple of wrapper Dll's AxInterop.SHDocVw.dll and Interop.SHDocVw.dll. Everything works fine and I can navigate the HTML document using the control . However, I need to deploy these two additional DLL's AxInterop.SHDocVw.dll and Interop.SHDocVw.dll in order for the application to work at runtime.     - CAS permissions problem I have a line of code that looks at My.Application.Info.Version. When I hit this line in the debugger, it passes just fine. After I publish the app, it fails when run, saying I need FileIOPermission permissions. However, I've explicitly included FileIoPermission in the CAS settings. Also, I have "Debug this application with selected permission set" selected. So, why does it fail in production, but not in the IDE and what more can I do to increase the permissions for this?     - Microsoft has let me down -- form breaks in designer Sorry for cross-posting this all over the place, but I've already lost two days to this problem, and I'm at my wits end. I've searched the usenet archives up and down and tried everything I can think of, but I just can't get the Visual Studio designer to stop breaking on me. My problem is that, when I open my form in the designer, I get an error dialog, and then when I accept the dialog, one of the TabPages of the TabControl is broken--there's an error message with a big red X plastered all over it. This happens even though I've just been using the designer (i.e., the GUI). I haven't written a single line of code yet. I can't reproduce exactly what I did (too many steps), but here's a rundown of what happened (with links to screen captures): == If you need more info to help me, please ask and I'll provide whatever I can. == 1. Create TabControl (contains Tab1 and Tab2) 2. Place a bunch of controls 3. Add data bindings for two DataGridViews (one on Tab1, one on Tab2) == everything fine so far == 4. I've used the property grid control in the past and it is a very nice
control.
But i wonder is there a way to switch the left and right columns, for
languages the use RTL the left column should be the value column and
the right column should be the property name column.

Is there a way to achive this without writing the control from scratch
?
I've explored all of the properties and methods of the property grid
and didn't found a hack for this , MS are you listening , why dont you
expose a property for this ?
