    - Drag and Drop Outlook attachment into a Windows Form Control I previously performed drag and drop between 2 lists within a Windows form. Right now I am looking for something a little more complex and I am not able to find a way to do it. In just few words, I want to drag a file (in my case a PDF file) which is an attachment to an email in Outlook 2003 client and drop it over a control (in my case a command button or anything else) within a window in my application. When file is dropped over my designated control, I do not need to open it I just want to save it into a SQL database. Saving files in SQL databases is not an issue because I am already doing it, my only problem is I don't know how to capture the dropped file into a variable in order to be afterwards able to save it into the database. The same question would apply for other formats too (e.g. BMP, JPG, TIFF, DOC, XLS, etc.) if each type should be handled in a different way. I appreciate any hints into this issue.     - Using vbTab to create tsv files I'm attempting to create a tsv file (i.e. equivalent to what Excel produces when you use the Text (tab delimited) type when saving. I'm trying this...     - Data binding to a NUmbericUpDownBox I have 1 row of data in data set and want to bind to a numeric box. I figured that nUpDwnMin1.DataBindings.Add("Value", ,"Min_1"); but I having an issue figuring out the source notation. Unfortunately, I am getting confused about setting the value from the data set. I created all my tables with table[0]. Do I have to use a get and set statement for the valuesl in the class? Can I directly load from the dataset? Also, these are numbers that will be updated that's why I decided to use a dataset to write back easily? This data set only contains 1 record. I put the code below to see if I am going over board.     - .net framework configuration Hi everyone, I have to install a .net executable on every machine in my network. Done. Now, when this executable runs, it stops with an unhandled exception. The only machine where it runs OK is the one on which I put up a .net framework security policy that enables the application to run.     - "Global" objects I am new to .NET and am wondering how to accomplish having certain global objects that could be referenced by other forms/user controls. I have a main form on which I show various user controls depending on which item the user clicks on in the NavBar on the left of the form. Each user control has certain program functionality on it. What I want to do, for example, is have certain object variables on the main form (e.g. m_oEventLogger) that I can reference from my user controls, or from other forms that I might show. 1) How do I declare these in the code for the Main form? 2) How would I refer to them from user controls shown on the main form? 3) How would I refer to them from other forms that are shown separate from the main form?     - Problem with MDI child form behavior I'm working on a C# program in Visual Studio 2003. The main form has a treeview control on the left side, a splitter, and the right side of the splitter has nothing and is used as the MDI client area. I have several MDI child forms open (typically maximized) and can pick which child form has focus by clicking on it's node representation in the treeview control. The event handler for the treeview figures out which mdi child form is associated with the selected node and does Child.Focus(). Everything works fine, except one of my forms. It is fairly long, has AutoScroll = true, and has a vertical scrollbar even when maximized, because of the length of the form. The form will look normal the first couple of times I choose it's node (is maximized with a scrollbar). But eventually when I select another form, then switch back to this form it will be resized as if the windowstate is "Normal", even though it is actually "Maximized". The middle controlbox button shows as if the form is maximized and I can see the other child form maximized behind it. If I click the "maximize" controlbox button, it will stay it's same size, but switch to "Normal" windowstate, where I can click the "maximize" button again to maximize it to the proper view. Also, if I've switched to this child form so that it is in this messed up state and just start to resize the main parent form, the mdi child form will immediately snap into the proper maximize state. If I turn "AutoScroll" off, the child form won't ever go into this weird state, but I don't have the scrollbar, which is needed.     - .NET windows service does not autostart I have created a windows service in VS2005 .NET, which works well. The service is set to "Automatic", however it does not autostart on bootup. The eventlog shows the error "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" My service uses TCP/IP sockets, so I have specified "Tcpip" as a dependency service (For some reason, the DependOnService shows up in the registry entry for my service, but not in the services management MMC). My service also tries to connect to a SQL server on a remote database at startup (I am using ADO.NET). Should I be adding any other DependOnServices? I read a post about this error happening if the Application event log is full, however, on my machine it is set to "overwrite events as needed", so I dont think thats the issue.     - TreeView missing QueryContinue..Event I am trying to get a QueryContinueDragEvent per the MSDN tutorial on Drag&Drop from a TreeView control. (List of controls / user controls) Hi, I have a problem where i need to show non-standardised information in a list and would like to provide in place editing if possible. for example Line 1 A B C Desc 1 3 5 6 Line 2 I II III IV Desc 2 2 4 5 5 The numbers under thier respective headers are the ones i need to provide in-place editing for. There should never be 100s of lines/items so i'm not too worried about creating lots of window handles cos there shouldn't be too many. However, should I... a) use an owner drawn list / control and provide editing in a custom control shown from a Dialog window that is opened after user has selected the item he/she wants to edit? (no inplace editing) b) create a user control which creates all the fields, labels etc and show them in a scrollable control? inplace editing ok, but nightmare to code, esp i'm additing and removing lines c) use a datagrid, with an owner drawn column? is this possible? I already have a user control which renders itself and child text boxes etc for a single item, is there any control anyone knows of that can render a series of user controls? or how do you create an owner drawn datagrid column? (if it's possible) there are a few options i guess, but none seem to be that good.     - BindingNavigator: does it have a 'Current Item Changed' type of event? I need to do something extra every time the position of what is the 'current' item changes. This could be the user clicking one of the buttons, or typing in a new number However, there doesn't seem to be an event that just says " the user selected a different item from the navigator". In fact, it seems I have to handle the Click event of every toolstrip item that could change the position. Plus, trap the lost focus event for the textbox that displays the current number, and probably trap its KeyDown event in case the user enters the new number and hits Enter. I can't seem to find an event on the navigator itself that would notify me of when the position changes. Not even a property that says what the current item index is - I have to parse out what is in the textbox?     - Need assistance with DSO Hi gang, this is pretty critical to me. Any help you can provide is appreciated. I have a WebBrowser control placed on a form. I am not getting the same results as I am in IE. Here is the deal, I dynamically load the HTML into the WebBrowser control, then I invoke a script that passes in XML data to the document. The XML data is not that large, say if it were recipies, it would have maybe 4 recipies in it. The script that loads our "recipies" first populates the master DSO for safe keeping. Then it loads the first "recipie" in the the working DSO so that the user may view it. What is not working properly is that the data never displays in the WebBrowser control on the WinForms application, in IE, it works just fine. I have explored using the onreadystatechange() and ondatasetcomplete() events in attempt to determine what is going on. I have also traced the data being sent to the working dso, it just never appears to load the data in the WebBrowser control. The WebBrowser control is intended to be a read only view of the data on the system.     - DataGridView non-focused selection appearance I have two DataGridViews on a form. (I'm using .NET 2005) When I run it, I can't tell which control has the focus because the selection looks the same on both controls. I'd like the selection appearance to work the way Windows Explorer does where only one control has the regular blue selection, and the other controls have a gray selection when they are not selected.     - ListBox: only repaint the items, not other area, in some cases Sorry I can't clearly describe how to reproduce this problem. Only what I can confirm is that, in some cases, the listBox just repainted all items in it, the other area kept the content before. For example, if another window overlaped on it, after removed that window, the listBox's items can normally refresh, but the other blank area kept the content of previous window. It's very strange.     - MouseHover event during drag and drop operations Hi, I am writing a classic, "Explorer"-like app in vb.net 2003 (dotnetfx1.1). I have written code to handle the dragging and dropping of items from a ListView on the right hand part of the form to a TreeView on the left part of the form. When the user pauses over a node in the TreeView in the middle of a drag and drop operation, I'd like the node to automatically expand to reveal the child nodes, just as you see in many commercial applications. However, I am unable to create this behaviour because the TreeView control does not fire the MouseHover event whilst in the middle of a drag and drop operation. Are there any workarounds to this? It has a polling loop and not surprisingly this is the part that keeps = doing it. I can watch the memory = usage of my app go up and never down. So mostly I've been ensuring that I never create an object in one of = these loops. But I thought that the garbage collector would deal with these objects = once they go out of scope .. and I dont know any other way except the = above snippet to ensure I dont cross thread for the control update. Will the garbage collector keep my memory under control if I use it = implicitly ??? or am I doing something fundementally flawed when = marshalling threads ? The problem is that, under certain conditions (described below) secondary GUI thread strangely crashes after it has exited the 'threadstart' function. The crash is 'Unhandled access violation exception' (0xc000000a) in ntdll.dll with the following call stack: ntdll.dll!_RtlFreeThreadActivationContextStack@0() + 0x1eda4 kernel32.dll!_ExitThread@4() + 0x39 kernel32.dll!_BaseThreadStart@8() + 0x3d My environment is .NET 1.1, Microsoft Windows XP SP2. And yes, it crashes on another machines, too. Condition for crash is that thread crashes only after I create and display a modal dialog box (another custom form), heaving main form for GUI thread #2 as Parent. This dialog box is used to display messages to the user instead of System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox (it has enhanced functionality like "Don't show this anymore" checkbox and timeout timer allowing it to be dismissed if user haven't clicked any buttons. When I switch back to System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox everything is fine. As this issue occurs in a big solution, I created new simple little CrashTest project to simulate this behavior and isolate my problem, but so far I haven't succeeded.     - Good "pattern" for data entry forms... I am new to .NET Windows Forms but am currently using Visual Studio 2005 primarily with VB.NET. I am in the process of creating an application that is going to have several different forms that allow for editing records in a table in my SQL Server 2005 database, each form serving a different purpose and showing some same and some different fields. Let's say it's a table called Tickets. My question is this... It should be noted that there are business rules associated with Tickets, and the fields contained therein. Can you suggest a pattern for these data editing/entry forms which will allow for creating new records, deleting existing records, and updating existing records? The pattern would include things like 1) how I should get and store data for the current record while user is working on it, 2) How should data be populated into controls on the forms (e.g. databound vs. manually filled in from some class or dataset, 3) how should I implement business rules, 4) how I should persist data out to database, etc. Any guidance would be very much appreciated.     - Show method of Panel is very slow Hi all, I'm looking at trying to improve the performance of showing a bunch of controls on a panel. I have a class that extends Panel. In that class, I do the following: this.SuspendLayout(); this.Hide(); //add controls to "this" AddControls(); this.ResumeLayout(); this.Show(); I have placed timing code in the above and the invocation of the Show method is extremely slow (relatively speaking to everything else). All of the other operations (including my custom AddControls method) take less than half a second. Meanwhile Show always takes anywhere from a second and a half to two seconds. I have to use the above ordering in order to ensure the Panel gets scroll bars to display properly since each invocation to the above code can result in a completely different set of controls (ranging from 1 control to 50 or more controls). Also, if I don't use Hide first, then the insertion of the controls can end up taking over 2 seconds. The only paths I can think of pursuing are either: a) finding some other way to get the Panel to figure out how much it needs to scroll (i.e. something like Invalidate), and/or b) determining why the show takes so long on each of contained controls Any suggestions on how I could pursue A or B or if there is an option C?     - Strange resizing problem with datagrid control I have a standard windows datagrid on my windows form and a custom combo box datagrid column as one of the columns in the datagrid. Sometimes when I start scrolling the datagrid it goes into a strange resizing mode and lets me change the size of the datagrid at runtime while I hold down my mouse instead of scrolling. It's really strange and seems to be related to the custom combo box datagrid column that I'm using. Any ideas as to what I should look for to fix this?     - Found GDI leak in TreeView (anyone know about it?) I have found what seems to be a leak of GDI resources in the .NET TreeView. I'm not entirely sure it's the .NET code or the underlying OS Common control but here's the skinny: If you use the Checkboxes property and set it to true on a TreeView it will leak 1 or 2 bitmaps and 2 memDCs every time you create and dispose of such a treeview. Our application has a browser-like UI parts of the UI are changing as controls get removed and destroyed. This leak eventually leaks too many GDI resources resulting in a crash. I was using the GDIUsage tool posted at http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/03/01/GDILeaks/default.aspx to verify this and I put together a small app that exhibits the behavior. Start a new project, create a new form and paste this into your code to try it out. Click the create a tree, then the middle button to remove/dispose/GC. You'll notice that the tree with the checkboxes leaks resources and the one without checkboxes leaks nothing. We are on VS2k3 using .NET 1.1 SP1.     - Smart Client Fails When Run On Machine With .NET 2.0 I have a Smart Client application that was written in .NET 1.1 long before .NET 2.0 ever came out. It works great. It uses web services and because we have many development environments, it dynamically gets the base Url to construct the Url for the web services by simply calling Application.ExecutablePath. Like I said, this all works great on a computer with .NET 1.1 Framework installed, but it now fails on a computer that has both .NET 1.1 and recently installed .NET 2.0! So much for Microsoft's side by side execution!     - CancelButton & ShowDialog Hello there, I have a form that gets shown using the ShowDialog() method. This form then has it's accept and cancel button properties set. If hte user hits the cancel button / hits ESC, the form is closed and they're returned to the parent form. If the use then clicks the accept button / hits enter, a different part of the form become enabled for them to work with. Here's where I'm running into a bit of a problem: When I enable this new part of the form, I also change the forms Accept & Cancel button properties to a different set of buttons to save / cancel data changes. If the user hits the second cancel button, no changes occur, the new part of the form becomes disabled again, and the control focus is returned to first part of the form (which was also disabled when the second part was enabled). However, in my testing, if the user hits the ESC key, the form is closed no matter what is in the button event handler. From my trial and error testing, it seems that this is a global property of any dialog that is displayed using ShowDialog, and has it's CancelButton property set. Now, I've coded up a work around for this by having the cancel button set a form variable, and then writing a Closing event handler to check to see if that variable is set. I have an app that will be reading arbitrary ".resx" or "resources" files passed on the command line for instance.     - ClickOnce and installaion icon When a ClickOnce app is being installed there is a window that says "Installing" which has the application name, an icon (defult square windows icon) and a progress bar. Our app does have a custom icon set,but it doesn't get used in this windows. I have looked all over, even checking into custom comman line build of the manifest, but don't see how to get OUR icon into that window during installation/updating.     - Caching Application Block fails to initialize Hi. I'm trying to use the Caching Application Block in a Windows Forms application. I've configured it and all worked fine. But after some tests it does not work anymore. When I call the method CacheFactory.GetCacheManager("Application Cache Manager"), it throws an exception with the following message: "Could not find file 'Application\2085804222\Val'." The problem is not the name of the cache because it was working. I don't know whether there is a limit for the cache, but I couldn't get it working. Is there a simple method to set the renderer to one of the three standard XP
themes without having to set each property?

I want to give the user the option (on pre XP systems) to set the
application style to one of the XP themes.
