    - trouble with events (Paint event) question - please help Hi, I have a Splash form in my Windows Forms app. It has a label on it, and in the Paint event of the label, I draw some text on the label. But I also want the Splash form to load my MDI form and carry out the initialisation of the application...     - Problem: Serialization using "<NonSerialized>" Does this attribute really work? I'm trying to "deep" serialize one of my objects which has a member variable pointing to a Form object. I don't want to serialize this form (and I know that I can't do this anyway because the Form class is not marked as Serializable). I try marking this member variable with the <NonSerialized> attribute, but the BinaryFormatter seems to be ignoring this attribute; It throws an exeption "Class frmReport {some info about the class here} can not be serialized, because it is not marked as Serializable" Is there any other way to prevent the serialization of a member variable that I don't know?     - Slide-out and Splitter Two questions. First, what does MS recommend / offer for creating those nifty slide-out dialogues (?) that Visual Studio has? Yes I'm talking about, for example, the default behavior of the Toolbox, or Properties dialogues in Visual Studio, which slide back and forth (Unless you select the push-pin).     - IME window question I wrote a text input aware control. in C# 2.0, inheriting from SWF.Control. Users eventually use the IME input window to enter text. I would like to be able to do just like Notepad (or the text boxes), that is position the IME window at the position of the caret and set its font to the current selection's font. How do I do that?     - DataGridColumnStyle Format Property One of the columns of my datagrid is an account #. The actual field which is coming from a sql server database is defined as a character. Within the database the account # 200300001 come across in our financial system as 20030000.1.     - Setting a control focus in OnLoad event. Based on data present when I load a form, I need to be able to set focus to a specific control. I have added code as the last line of my Load handler setting a control to have focus. e.g. control3.Focus(). But when the form is displayed, the first control with tab stop has focus instead of the control I set. This should be a very basic thing to do but I can't figure out how. In the WIN32 API, you would return false form the OnInitDialog() method to allow retention of focus you set programmatically. Anyone know how to do this?     - Opening a ContextMenu without a parent control Hi, I am writing an Excel addin with C#. I have some ActiveX objects embedded within the spreadsheet and when the user clicks on one of them I want to show a context menu. Now the problem is that ContextMenu.Show() needs a Control object as parameter but in my scenario there is no Winforms control object. I have the HWND window handle of the ActiveX object but I can't figure out how to pass it to the ContextMenu object. Any ideas how to do this?     - The dreded EnableVisualStyles and External exception error We really want to use the visual styles in our app but get that stupid external exception error at the weirdest times. I call it like this: static void Main() { Application.EnableVisualStyles(); Application.DoEvents(); Application.Run(new MyForm() ); } The problem seems to occur sometimes when DoEvents is called again within the application but not actually at the call. The exception is throw during other code execution. Although, if I comment out DoEvents() it will work in most cases. I need to call DoEvents in some cases so I can't completely remove it.     - VB.NET Screen rendering issues. Folks, We have written a VB.NET application with Access database. When we open any screen (Form) all the text fields and grids (we are using ComponentOne TrueDB Grid) and some other controls render as a "hole" and then once all the data is retrieved then the complete screen rendering is done. We tried to hide all the controls before it loads all the data and then show all the controls once the data is retrieved but it still does that empty control ghosting display issue. Because of this the application appears to slow even though the screen load time is just 3-4 seconds. Has somebody faced this kind of issue before? Does anyone have any recommendations?     - Wierd sorting in DataGridView I have a DataGridView control on a form which is bound to a class that is derived from CollectionBase and implements IBindingList. This works okay except that the sorting acts really strangely in certain situations. To sort my class I implement IBindingList.ApplySort and in the method I use CollectionBase.InnerList.Sort and pass it an instance of a class that implements IComparer to sort the data objects in my list. The implementation of the IComparer.Compare method is relatively straightforward: object a = MyType.GetProperty(PropertyName).GetValue(x, null); object b = MyType.GetProperty(PropertyName).GetValue(y, null); if (a != null && b == null) return 1; if (a == null && b != null) return -1; if (a == null && b == null) return 0; return ((IComparable)a).CompareTo(b); Now this sort of works okay. For example, if my data object has properties a, b, and c which are displayed on the DataGridView like this: a b c 100 1 1 90 2 1 80 3 1 70 4 1 60 5 1 50 6 1 40 7 1 And I click on the header for row a I get this: a b c 40 7 1 50 6 1 60 5 1 70 4 1 90 3 1 90 2 1 100 1 1 And if I click it again I get back to the original. So far so good. If I click on column b, I get the expected behavor too. However, if I click on column c (where all the values are the same) I get this: a b c 60 5 1 50 6 1 40 7 1 70 4 1 100 1 1 90 2 1 80 3 1 Clicking a second time gets me to the second table above. Clicking a third times gives me this: a b c 80 3 1 90 2 1 100 1 1 70 4 1 40 7 1 50 6 1 60 5 1 And finally, clicking a fourth time gets be back to the original order.     - Control Flicker while switching TabPage Hello, I created a windows form with vs.net 2005 / c#. This control has a TabControl with 16 TabPages. On every TabPage there are a diffrent number of Controls. - Every TabPage has a background picture. they are all the same picture (from a resouce file). There seems to be no way easy to make a TabControl transparent... my problem: while switch the visible TabPage the form / TabControl begans to flicker. it takes a second (and I mead "1 sec") before all controls of the TabPage are drawed.     - Display List<int> inside DataGridView Hi, i have bound my list of objects to a data grid view (i have actually used BindingList) and can add, edit objects ok. However, as you can see my object also contains a List<int> but i am not given the option to display this in the properties when i goto add a new column. How could i go about displaying a list of ints (ideally i would like a custom display, where i can list the ints, one to five in this example, in a text box seperated by commas ie "1, 2, 3, 4").     - help with .NET TreeView control - rightclick/mousedown & context m Hi, I have a tree-view control on my form, showing two levels of nested nodes. I want to show a different context menu depending on the Tag of the selected node. The trouble is that the tree-view doesn't change the SelectedNode on a (right-click) mousedown event, only on the left-click. How can I force the selected node to be the one that the user has right-clicked on during the mousedown event, so when I test the tag of the selected node in the context menu popup event it is correct?     - Open Documents of Arbitrary Type from .Net I'm developing a win form based add-on to a document management system using the .Net runtime. When a user is using my add-on they could be dealing with documents of many different types, e.g. Word, PDF, Excel, RTF. I have a problem with it when entering international text through the IME window.     - Toolbar Image Distortion Hi I have an image that i want to use as a toolbar image. Its been created with a transparent background in Photoshop. I have tried saving it to both a png and a gif format and loading them into an image list and reference that for toolbar button images. I did this in an old COM/VB6 application and I had to have code behind practically all visible UI controls (triggered on the Mouse_Move event) that reset a global variable monitored by a timer. If the global value incremented past a certain point, then a Timer event procedure would cause a dialog to appear. If the user failed to respond to the dialog after 10 seconds, then the app would shut down. Does .NET give us an easier way to accomplish the same? I don't want to have to detect the mouse_move event of practically every UI control and have a timer running in the background the whole time, if possible. Thanks! I am no expert at winforms but I can't understand what I am doing that would cause this to crash out the IDE. Not an exception.. a hard crash where VS.NET has to restart. To replicate the problem, add the attached CS to a class lib and build, then create a winform project and add an inherited form using the DLL that was built from the class lib. When the form loads you should see a gray gradient pane going across the top of the form. In the properties under section "Info Header" there are three items, start, end, and height. Change the start color.. works fine.. change it a second time.. and bye bye VS.NET =( If anyone has the time to take a look at the code, and provide a little direction I would appreciate it.     - Making use of BehaviorService, Glyphs, Adorners in runtime? I recently stumbled upon the BehaviorService, Glyphs, and Adorners and they seem pretty powerful and extensible. However, they also appear to be geared towards design time. Can they be used at runtime to provide a framework for creating a control? From what I can tell they should be able to provide support for both windowed and windowless controls. We need to provide a mechanism for people to put their own controls into our grid control. We're also looking for a very high performance mechanism for doing this.     - MVP and DAL Operations I'm designing an implementation of the Model View Presenter (MVP) pattern for a Windows Forms MDI application. Question: From where would it generally make sense to *initiate* data access (e.g, CRUD) operations - the Model or the Presenter? Please note that I'm *not combining* the data access layer with the MVP objects. Rather, I have a completely separate DAL. Even so, the DAL methods must be called/initiated from somewhere within the MVP objects. My tendency is to put DAL calls into the Model (e.g., DAL.UpdateThisThing(thingID)), but doing that would seem to have the model doing much more than the MVP pattern intends for it to be doing. But I am not able to capture Key events when the focus is on the webbrowser control in my winform. Options tried. 1. Wrote a class which extends this WebBrowser and override its onkeyup event - didn't work. 2. Same as option 1 but override preprocessmessage - didn't work. 3. Hi, We are working on a project in need of some sophisticated thumbnail generating: Miguel de Icaza (of Mono fame) has shown a Thumbnail generator (for screenshot of webpages) as detailed in this blog entry (http://tirania.org/blog/archive/2004/Jun-14.html). They do it with GTK# and GECKO#. Can we do the same with Windows Forms 2.0's WebBrowser control? We think it will need to draw to an off-screen buffer, a snapshot will be taken of the buffer, and returned back to external callers like ASP.NET pages and Windows Service daemons. Our main interest will center around: 1) whether it's possible to make use of functionality the Forms namespace if I never intend to make a program visible; 2) whether such functionality can be bundled into an callable assembly; 3) and whether WebBrowser 2.0 is a better way to take snapshots (we will need features like: w/ or w/o scroll-bars; w/ or w/o GUI elements; and customizable width and height) or should I look for ActiveX access methods. This sounds like some serious Windows Forms 2.0 fu, and we would be delighted if the kind Windows Forms 2.0 experts in this channel can show us the path. I am having a big performance problem with a smart client application done
in .NET 2003.
When accessing the web server, the version check takes ages to complete if
the client download cache contains
old versions of the application. After deleting old versions, the
application starts again working at full speed.

Any hint would really be appreciated,
