    - Building My Own DataSource Control hi All, I'm hoping to build my own datasource control, and hoped that someone would point me in the right direction to start. I have already created a class, which accepts a form, a tablename, a connection and a collection of field object (which contain information about which field binds to which form control). I build all this in code, and then the class gets a dataset, binds the controls to it, and allows modifiaction and updates etc. then saves them back to the database. However, I'd like to build a control, which would automate all of this, by getting the fields at design time, and allowing the user to bind the fields and then the user could simply change the connection string at run-time to point to the correct database when deployed. I am trying to kind of replicate the method by which you build bound forms in access. Any pointers to articles, or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks Alex Tag: Problems with child forms Tag: 65280

    - Licensing an assembly with components We are developing an assembly that will expose a multitude of components and controls. Many of them are inherited from one another and some of them represent user controls that group some other controls on them. We need to license all major types. We created a LicenseProvider that works very well by checking the design time license and embeding the runtime license in the result assembly. The problem is that if a user uses a large number of controls a separate license for each type gets embeded in the result making the file larger than needed. Also, the process of running the license check for each type might decrease performance a little. So, my idea was this: to create a special class inside the assembly with a static constructor. This means that everytime the assembly is loaded in one app domain the static constructor will be called. I would then run the license check in the static constructor and set a static value to true or false meaning the license was good or not. Then in each type I can simply check the static value and continue or not. Then, in the end result assembly only one license, corresponding to the special class, will be embeded... Considering that all other security issues are taken care of (sigining the assembly, etc...), does this method present any danger? Can anybody think of any security issues? This assembly will be sold entirely and there will be no licenses per type, but just per the entire assembly so this approach makes sense to me...     - Legacy Application Reengineering (Basic to C#) We currently have a financial application running on an HP 3000, written in Basic ( the old kind, with line numbers and single-character variable names, etc) with about 500K lines of code. It uses a no-longer-sold, non-relational, HP-proprietary database called Image. This application has many very happy customers, each utilizing it via terminal emulator software in remote locations. We are tentatively architecting a phased migration to a .NET solution, for obvious reasons. Likely, we would first create a cleaner presentation layer based on WinForms, then migrated business logic off the HP3000 to a Win 2003 server ( in C# code), and finally move the database to SQL Server. But.. none of us have experience with a legacy migration/reengineering process (particularly from such an antiquated code base.) Further, given our meager start-up funding level, we cannot afford to hire expensive consultants who specialize in this area. Does Microsoft provide resources with advice on the reengineering process? Whitepapers? Web resources? tools? Also, would anyone recommend good books on this topic? Or any other websites (other than just Microsoft's)? Are there conversion tools to convert Basic to C#? And, my MOST IMPORTANT question (pardon the all caps)... are there "rules of thumb" for estimating programmer resource requirements for migration based on lines of code, database schema complexity, etc.? I know how to do it off of a dataset, but I would rather not incur the overhead since it is just a display field that is used to populate other information from the key value (ValueMember).     - SYNCHRONISING ALL OPEN FORMS - WINFORMS I have a client-server application using ADO.NET datasets where the user can open several forms - and as many copies of a form as they care to - and edit the data on them. How do you synchronise all the open forms when the user changes a value on the currently active form? For example: * user opens a ViewOrders form which shows a list of Orders including the SupplierName for each Order * user opens EditSupplier form which shows a list of Suppliers * user edits a SupplierName The corresponding SupplierName on ViewOrder form should now change to reflect the edit. I need a general pattern for this - there are hundreds of possible fields the user can edit and any number of different forms could be open - any of which may (or may not) need to be "synchronised".     - WinForms / ODBC.net security Using the ODBC.net data provider to access dbase V tables. Everything works fine on the develpment system, but I get a security error on the production system (running XP on both, so MDAC=2.7) here's the code block that generates an UNHANDLED sercurity exception.     - DataGrid and Wheel on mouse Using VS 2003, VB.net, msde... I have a databound datagrid that works fine. The form also has several combo boxes that determines what the datagrid displays. When data is displayed, if you highlight a row, or click on a cell, and use the mouse wheel to scroll down, it immediately gives focus to combobox tab stop 1, scrolling down it's options. I would anticipate the wheel to simply scroll down the datagrid (like hitting the down arrow on the scroll bar), not swich to another control and scroll its options.     - WinForms app passes DataSet to remoted type: possible bug Our DAL (Data Access Layer as a dll) is hosted by IIS. We use binary serialization to pass a DataSet into the DAL from a client exe. Our client exe calls GetChanges on DataSet and passes the changes to our remoted DAL. On inserts we have an output parameter for the primary key. After the call to DataAdapter.Update, we watch the insert sproc run and return the output param value. We watch the DataRow change from Added to Unchanged. We watch the source column for output param get set to the outparam's value. The DAL then returns the DataSet to the client exe. Once back in the client exe, the DataRow is still marked as Added and the source column is empty. This is exactly the way it looked when it was sent to the remoted DAL. Now, if we run the DAL locally in a private folder, we see the same results in the DAL. However, back in the client exe the DataRow is marked as Unchanged and the source column contains the output parm value. My interest is in generating forms with my own app, but I need for those forms to be compatible with the VS.NET form designer.     - events in multithreaded application Hi, I want to create a class that creates a thread internally to do some work. It will interact with winforms using events. What happens when the code that is running in a seperate thread raises an event? Will the code in the event handler that is attached to the event run in the internal thread, or will it run in the GUI thread? The MSDN documentation says that all interaction with the GUI from other threads have to go through an Invoke method. The user shouldn't know that the class used threads internally.     - datagrid horizontal scrolling Hello: Hope you could help me on this. I have a datagrid with 12 columns. I am displaying 8 columns and then I scroll to the right to see the rest of the columns. When I scroll to see the rest of the columns, the first columns are not visible unless I go back to see them.     - PropertyGrid not updating correctly Hi, I've made a class containing a public int and a public Point. I also created a TypeConverter (in fact an ExpandableObjectConverter) supporting InstanceDescriptorInfo. This results in a nice expandable property containing the integer property and an expandable Point property. So far so good. Further I've found out that in order to inform my control that a sub- property has been changed then I have to override GetCreateInstanceSupported and CreateInstance. Now the control catches the updates. However: If I expand the property in the PropertyBrowser like this: -MyClassProp - PointProp X Y IntProp and then enter a new X value and press Enter then the PropertyGrid somehow gets confused and displays something like this: -MyClassProp + PointProp IntProp Y IntProp Ie. the Point-property is collapsed but still partially drawn as expanded! Collapsing and expanding the MyClassProp updates the PropertyGrid.     - WinApp Deployment Hello All, I am frustrated with the concept of No-Touch Deployment. This was a big marketing aspect of the .NET development model, but there are many ways to do it, and none of them are working for me. The Updater Application Block requires BITS, its own service, a script file, etc. This is a deployment issue to begin with. The 'navigate to an '.exe' file doesn't seem to work on my W2K3 Server, through an ISA firewall. (no idea where the issue is, just nothing happens when I navigate to the URL from my network. It works on the server itself. The server is in my Trusted Zone. I don't want to go opening huge holes without knowing how to approach this). Will W2K3 Server server the EXE over the net by default? Is my ISA Server preventing it? When I do run it on the server itself, I then get security issues related to the fact that my app hits a web service. Is this an effective means of deploying an application that will need to hit the user's hard drive, as well as a database / web service? How would I go about implementing it? Or, am I better to use the Updater Application Block?     - Crystal Reports: Database connection problem. Highly Urgent Hello All, I have a windows application that is using Crystal reports. The database for the application is located on a different machine than the machine on which the application is running. Currently, we are using the IP address of the database server in the DB connection string. But when the user tries to pull up the reports, there is a request for the login information for the database server. I am completely at a loss to understand as to why this is happening. The System.Windows.Forms.Timer fails because of the UI-operations it executes in my program. So the program crashes when it is being closed. The solution was to replace the System.Windows.Forms.Timer with an implementation of SetTimer and KillTimer.     - Problems binding control data types to a dataset I've run into a problem with binding form properties to data in an xml file (through a dataset). As it turns out, I can easily bind if the data type of the property on the control is a normal datatype such as a string or integer. If the datatype is not one of the built-in types however, things go horribly wrong. Consider this xml file: <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?> <SettingsData> <one> <Text>Center</Text> </one> </SettingsData> If I create a normal winforms application and add the following code to the form's constructor, it works. I get "Center" in the text box. Here's the code that works: DataSet dataset; dataset = new DataSet(); dataset.ReadXml(@"d:\development\bindtest\form.xml"); TextBox textbox = new TextBox(); Binding binding = new Binding("Text", dataset, "one.Text"); textbox.DataBindings.Add(binding); textbox.Width = 150; textbox.Height = 50; textbox.Top = 50; textbox.Left = 50; textbox.Parent = this; this.Controls.Add(textbox); I hardcoded the size and placement of the text box, but I can easily get that from the xml as well. I encountered a problem when I tried to pull TextAlign from the xml file though. I know that this would require the use of Format, so I implemented that. Then I get an unhandled exception from the Application.Run(new Form1()); Error creating window handle. Can anyone tell me what's happening and how to fix it? I foresee I'll have the same problem trying to read the font name and size from the xml file. I have a workaround, but it's very unelegant.     - No Touch Deploy creating EMF's problem Hi, I have a No Touch Deploy application that I want to create and EMF File and serialize it back to the Server via Web Services. When I test the client application running from a local directory (MyComputer zone) it works fine. But when I launch with NTD from my web server I get a Security Exception in the CTOR of the emf. Is there anyway around this. I have tried several of the different CTORs available and the all have thrown the exception. It doesn't make sense that Creating a metafile would be a security violation.     - CheckedListBox and ItemCheck Event Is there an event similar to ItemCheck, within the CheckedListBox class, that is called after a list item is checked and updated with the new check value? I currently have a method that iterates through the CheckedItems collection of a CheckListBox control.     - weird bug on buttons I created 2 buttons and in the .Text property in teh designer I set one to "load..." and the other to "save..." The "load..." button was fine but the save button was displayed as "... save" on the form with the eplipses BEFORE the text, but the property for .Text was AFTER the text. Really odd.     - System.Windows.Forms.ListView: OnItemCheck method called when displaying the form Is there any way to know whether the OnItemCheck is being called in response to a user action (mouse or keyboard) as opposed to the form loading? I have a class which derives from System.Windows.Forms.ListView. Among other features, it enables the checkboxes and overrides the OnItemCheck() method. I have placed this ListView on a form and use form.ShowDialog() to display it whenever the user presses a certain button. If the user ticks any of the items in the ListView, and then presses the button again, the form displays okay, but it calls the OnItemCheck() method twice for each item that was previously checked (once to uncheck, and again to check the item). The problem is, that I keep track of the order in which the user checked the checkboxes, and when OnItemCheck is called it effectively changes the order to be the same as the insertion order in the list. I have a baseform, which contains an own made component that implements the IExtenderProvider interface, so that this component provides properties to the controls in the form. The IExtedenderprovider is kept in a seperate project (project reference). Then I try to inherit from this baseform. When opening the screen at design, (after putting some extra controls on it), all the controls disappear, and in the task list I get messages like: Method System.CodeDom.CodePropertyReferenceExpression.SetDataTag not found. Eac control's DataSource is a different DataView from the same DataTable Each control has its own binding context. I want to let the user edit those. So I put a DateTimePicker whenever the user clicks on that column. That's all working fine. My question is, how can I detect that the user clicked "on something else"? There's lots of other things the user can click on -- tabs, menu items, scrollbars, etc... I wouldn't want to have to catch each of those other components' click events... But, the DateTimePicker doesn't seem to have "lost focus" event...? I am running into a problem, each time I loop to a control on the tab page not selected it does not fire the validating the event.     - Internet Explorer is bleeding through when using MDI Forms We are using MDI Forms. We have an MDI parent w/ a navigation panel to the left. (Similar to the toolbox panel in the .net environment) Then we click on a link in the navigation panel, a new form is loaded inside the MDI parent. There is a rule about not creating a Windows control on a non UI thread isn't there but what exactly is the rule. Is it I shouldn't construct a control on a non UI thread or I shouldn't Show a control on a non UI thread. If I have a callback method that is invoked when a worker thread completes. The callback method needs to display a form with some information obtained from the worker thread. Now, the callback method is actually executed on the worker thread, not the UI thread and so I'm creating the UI control on a different thread. I do however have a ShowControl() method on the main form that I call to display the newly create control and this method checks the Form.InvokeRequired property before calling Show(), calling Invoke() if required. Hello!

I've got a problem. When I maximize my mdi and try to open some mdichild
forms maximized too, sometimes
appears more then one control box. And when i try to close them, it just
leave one of them opened, and no way to close it.
as it shows in the attachement.
Anyone knows what problem is this?

It's a known bug. I added a menu and tool bar to the MDI parent and to each
child to get rid of it. On some forms, like an about, I just have a menu
with Exit. Seems to address the problem.
