    - Config problem: appSettings not found by other dll's I am running a wizard style application which uses other assemblies. One of these assemblies uses an appSettings section for configuration. My understanding is that the configuration systems uses a config file named after the hosting process executable? However, this isn't being picked up from this file..     - "Autohide menu bar" in Media Player I want to add the "Autohide menu bar" feature to my form like the Windows media player. (Menu bar is shown only when the mouse is over the non-client area. i.e. title bar, menu bar) However, seems the MouseMoved event is fired only when the mouse is moved over the visible area.     - Vertical scrolling for windowsforms in c# hi all, i need to create vertical scrollbar dynamically for the controls that are created dynamically in the form.     - label.visible does not work I'm developing a quite comlex form containing a user control in C# In the user control I'm trying to set a simple label to be visible: labelState.Visible = true; The debugger showns me, that the labelState.Visible is false before entering this line of code. But it is still false after this line of code!!! Can anyone please explain, how this can happen? I have double checked that I have not defined an event on this label that resets the value to false. Is there any posiible condition that does not allow to set a label's visibility to true?     - child mdi forms in different threads Hi, I want to open up a number of child forms in my main mdi container form, but I want the processing that will happen in each child to happen in a different thread. I tried something like this: ChildForm childForm = new ChildForm(); shildForm.MdiParent = this; Thread thread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(childForm.Show)); thread.Start(); It workd fine for the first childForm, but the next one doesn't open up.     - ListBox, items get corrupted. Hi there I've implemented a modification of the common ListBox control. It's used for displaying a collection of fonts - eigther system fonts or fonts from a custom folder. But somehow, if I'm displaying custom fonts retrieved using the PrivateFontCollection, and I'm resizing the form or overlapping it with some other window - the items get corrupted. (Items are actually just Font-objects). At first it draws perfectly - but after some time resizing the window it crashes throwing the ArgumentException withing the item's (Font object's) name field. I've got no problem at all displaying system fonts. Resizing as wild as possible doesn't make it crash. Any suggestions? Tag: BIg Problem Tag: 83983

    - PrintDocument and PrivateFontCollection Hi there... I'm writing a tiny utility to display various fonts - system fonts or custom fonts chonsen from some folder. Also I want to give the user the ability to print all the fonts - and that's why I've implemented a print (preview) function. But I've got the following problem: When trying to print and display fonts that aren't installed in the system - it doesn't work. I'm creating a PrivateFontsCollection from all font-files from a custom folder, and then drawing some certain string with each and every font in this collection - but it won't draw using the custom fonts, but automatically switches to "MS Sans Serif" It seems like I'm able to retrieve name, size, etc - but it just wont draw with the correct font face. I've got no problems drawing fonts installed in the system - retrieving them via InstalledFontCollection. That works like a charm. I was having the same problem using a RichTextBox to display the fonts at first - but then I implemented my own ListBox-thingy custom made for my purpose, and that worked fine as well.     - WinForms Interaction Hi, I want to have interactions between two forms. A will sample with next lines: 1. The program user has a main window with a Listview control on it 2. The user selects an item from the listview and selects some 'details' option. 3. The program responds showing a child window with details for item selected on the main window. 4. In order the user selects previous/next item without have to close the child window, there are two buttons (up/down) to navigate between items. So my concern is even the child window is the active window the user requires to see which item is selected on the Listview control of the main window, so what I need is to keep highligted the selected item on the main windows without the user select it as the active window.     - MenuItem and KeyDown Event Hi all, I have a form with a main menu which contains a MenuItem with a shortcut. (Ctrl+C). In the form I have a datagrid that overrides the KeyDown event and if it's the Ctrl+C combination it performes some task. Now it seems that whenever the shortcut of the MenuItem is defined the DataGrid DOESN'T receive the event, but when the shortcust isn't defined in the MenuItem the DataGrid acts well and receives the KeyDown event.     - ListBox resize problem Hi, Iam new to windows forms so maybe this problem was discussed already (tho I could not find anything on google). I have added and docked to the left a ListBox, now when I resize Form, list box resizes correctly in Width, but in Height it does not change its position smoothly. I mean that bottom size changes its position like it was computed modulo 10 - it looks like it snaps to grid points. I hope this is informative description. Thanks for any help.     - Mouse capture for custom context or drop-down menus Hello, I'm implementing an undo/redo drop-down menu similar to the undo/redo menus in VS.NET 2003. The idea is that when the drop-down arrow is pressed, a floating ListBox control appears under the pressed button, and disappears when the user chooses an action to undo or clicks anywhere else in the form - meaning that when the ListBox is open, I need to handle every MouseDown event on the form. I tried attaching an event handler to the MouseDown event of the ListBox and then setting ListBox.Capture = true, but unfortunately that didn't do the trick (why I couldn't figure out). Mouse events were raised for every control on the form that handles them, and my ListBox.MouseDown handler was only called when the mouse was over the list box - i.e., capture wasn't working. Next I tried P/invoking SetCapture and ReleaseCapture, but with the same result (unless the mouse button was still pressed, in which case ALL system mouse events were captured - far from ideal). After lots of searching I found a message on this group saying that only in a MouseLeave event handler will Control.Capture = true actually make any difference - that turned out to be true and I finally got capture to work. The only problem was that since the ListBox first appears when the cursor is still on the drop-down button, capture wasn't set until the cursor was moved over and out of the ListBox. I finally solved it by some ugly cursor position fiddling. I (programmatically) move the cursor position over the ListBox and then move it back. I'm sharing this here in case someone gets stuck on a similar problem.     - Changing DataViewManager.RowFilter has no effect - Sample Northwind Code Attached - Northwind.zip (0/1) Using a strongly typed dataset, a DataGrid and some bound text controls where the user selects a row in the DataGrid and the bound controls display it here is the problem: If I bind the grid and the controls to the tables DefaultView and I change the DefaultView.RowFilter the grid changes as expected. If I bind the grid and the controls to a DataViewManager and I change the RowFilter nothing happens. The attached sample code has a checkbox below the DataGrid that will attempt to filter the Northwind.Customers.Region field for NULLS. There are two forms one that binds using the DataViewManager (NOT WORKING) and the other using the DefaultView (WORKING). I need to use the DataViewManager so if anyone can figure out why this isn't working or point out the error of my ways I would be most appreciative.     - Lareg fonts - detect BOTH methods of changing AFAIK, there are two different ways of getting large fonts in Windows: 1. Increasing the DPI setting on your display adapter. Display Settings -> Settings -> Advanced. 2. Scale the fonts in you current display theme (in XP) or scheme (in Win2K). Display Settings -> Appearance From Chris Sell's book and article (http://www.sellsbrothers.com/writing/default.aspx?content=winformsautoscaling.htm) I know that WinForms handles 1. above fine on its own and scales the fonts and controls properly using the AutoScale property. However, what about method 2. above? Changing this setting doesn't seem to fire the DisplaySettingsChanged event and WinForms doesn't scale apart from the text in the window title bar getting bigger. What I would like to do is what VS.NET 2003 does when you change this setting - all of its fonts get bigger.     - Winforms Datagrid - detecting SORT I'm trying to find an event that will help me keep a status area updated for the grid row under the cursor. For the most part when a user clicks somewhere in the readonly grid I am responding to the cell change event, and selecting the entire row. A custom paint reverses colors. This works great. Even after sorting, I see how to use the currency manager to find the right dataset record to show status for the right record in a separate area. But when someone uses the built in sort feature, I don't get a change position type event. I've fiddled with mouse-down, and mouse-up, and the sort has not occurred yet. I am always showing stats for the PREVIOUS highlighted record when I click a column heading for auto-sort. My status window is always behind by one. But if the user picks a cell after the sort, then everything is back in synch. So I am looking for an event that I can respond to AFTER the sort has actually happened, that I can update my status area for the new "current row". It doesn't seem to be coming easily.     - MessageBox bug? I posted this in microsoft.public.dotnet.languages.csharp with name of "Bug in Framework?" Drop a timer on the form, set it's interval to 1000 and put this in for the timer event: timer1.Enabled = false; MessageBox.Show("TEST"); Run the application and make sure to take focus away from the form/App. I just select my News reader. Once you do this and the message box displays the form is selectable.     - Forms inheritance with UIP 2.0 Hi, We are using UIP 2.0 and we encountered a problem when trying to inherit from a form that inherits from UIProcess.WindowsFormView. Our base form have an onLoad event handler that call its controller: private MyController myController { get { return (MyController)this.Controller; } } private void Form1_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { this.myController.DoSomething() } The problem is that the inherited from will not open in the designer as long as we have this call to the controller in our load event.     - Losing data Not sure how to explain this problem so here it goes... I have two forms and I want to copy data from one form to load into another. Now this seems to be working but the problem is the various controls seem to be populated before the bindingcontext is finished. Therefore erasing my preload data.     - Example of IsInputKey in VB? I am trying to figure out how to use this and every example I can find is in C#. On my form, the user hits the enter key and the focus moves from a textbox and selects the appropriate row in a datagrid. When the user hits the enter key again, I want it to the focus to jump from the 1st datagrid to a second datagrid. The keypress and keydown event don't fire so I think the IsInputKey is what I need to use. If anyone has an example, or any other idea about how I can get this to work please help. I also want to capture mouse events that occur on the browser (Mouse Down). To do so, my class implements IMessageFilter to pre filter messages and do special stuff on Mouse Down events on the browser. My problem lies in the fact that I can't get the Handle of the browser, therefore I can't tell whether the mouse events occurred in the browser window or anywhere else... Since I can't find any answer on how to get the Handle of the WebBrowser Control I was thinking of creating a dummy/invisible window over the browser that would capture mouse events but would not hide the Browser...     - How do I Bind to a DataView instead of a DataTable I have a strongly typed dataset that I have been able to bind to a DataGrid and other associated controls such that selecting a name in the DataGrid displays the record in the associated controls using DataBinding and the CurrencyManager. Add, Update and Delete are all working great. Above the DataGrid I have 26 LinkLabels A-Z where (hopefully) the user will be able to filter the names in the DataGrid. I'm pretty sure I need to use a DataView in order to filter the records based on the users Index (A-Z) selection but I am confused as to how to bind everything to a DataView instead of the DataTable. My Strongly Typed DataSet is goDS. I use the following sample code to bind the controls: txtFirstName.DataBindings.Add("Text", goDS, "tblGuests.FirstName") To bind the DataGrid I use: grd.SetDataBinding(goDS, "tblGuests") To retrieve the CurrencyManager I use: CType(BindingContext(goDS, "tblGuests"), CurrencyManager) How can I bind everything to a DataView instead of a DataTable and still have it all work in concert?     - Asynchronous calls Three quick (I hope) questions regarding async programming in a windows form: 1) When I perform a BeginInvoke on a delegate in my own thread (actually the main GUI thread) in the midst of a message event handler (say OnMouseUp), does the implementation basically work the same as the BeginInvoke from another thread, i.e., a message is posted, the event handler completes execution, then when the message is dequeued, the target method is invoked? 2) Is there a complete list of how synchronous paint calls can be generated? I know that doing an Invalidate() simply queues a paint message, but adding an Update() causes a synchronous paint message.     - Databinding Null (VB Nothing) values I have a listbox who's dataSource is an array of Classes of the type Discount. and this listbox is bound to a Customer's Discount property. Customer c = CustomerFactory.GetInstance(2342); Dicsount[] d = DiscountFactory.GetAll(); ListBox1.DataSource=d; ListBox1.DisplayMember="Description"; Listbox1.DataBindings.Add("SelectedItem",c,"Discount"); This works beautifully. However, for some customers there will be no discount. In this case, I would need a "No Discount" option in my listbox whose value is null so that the customer.Discount property is set to null. Can this be done somehow? Can you add an item to a listbox os combobox that sets a databound property to null? I know that I could ass a Discount instance to the array whose description is "No Discount." However, that's kind of sloppy. There is a lot of logic in my app that checks for things like "if(myCustomer.Discount==null)" and checking for "if(myCustomer.Discount.Description=="No Discount")" is effectively hard-coding database values into your app (baaaaad idea) So, any thought? anyone?     - Strange exception behaviour Examine the following code fragment used from within the main form of a windows forms application when clicking a button: private void button1_Click(object s, System.EventArgs e) { try { Form2 f2 = new Form2(); f2.ShowDialog(); } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show ("Error catched"); } } Form2 also contains a button and when the button is clicked, a divide by zero exception is created by the following code: private void button2_Click(object s, System.EventArgs e) { int i,j; i = 0; j = 1/i; // Divide by zero } Because the exception is not catched in Form2, I expect this exception is catched by the code fragment in the main form by displaying the message "Error catched", but the behaviour is very strange. 1. When running the application from within VS2003 using F5 (=debug), the error is catched, so my messagebox is displayed. This is the same for both running in release mode and debug mode. This is the expected behaviour !!!! 2. When running the application from wihtin VS2003 using ctrl-F5 (=no debug), the standard "unhandled exception" window is displayed. This is the same for both running in release mode and debug mode. This behaviour is also the same when running the application outside the studio (= the behaviour when the application is deployed). Question: Why is the exception in -2- not catched by the implemented catch. I expected the same behaviour as in -1- I know I can use Application.ThreadException to catch the unhandled exception, but this is not the requested functionality. Is this because the computer does not have enough memory to store the complete file? or could it be something with the web page that is responding to the request? or could it be something else. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated and even modifications to my code above. I am not sure how to make the memory stream write to the file every Meg to test the theory.
