    - First chance exceptions Hi When running my app in vs 2008 IDE I get the below messages in the Immediate Window repeatedly. A first chance exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' occurred in MyApp.exe A first chance exception of type 'System.Runtime.InteropServices.InvalidComObjectException' occurred in MyApp.exe A first chance exception of type 'System.IO.FileNotFoundException' occurred in System.Drawing.dll A first chance exception of type 'System.ArgumentNullException' occurred in mscorlib.dll They don't crash the app but it seems the app slows downs when one of these errors occurs.     - Form-to-Form Control I am using C # .NET Framework 3.5. I have a calling form that invokes dialog box (called form). I want a button in the called form to change the value of a property in a control in the calling form. Clearly I could set a return code in the called form and have it acted on when control is returned to the calling form.     - Can I create a Windows Explorer Icon type object in .NET I am trying to create a Windows Explorer icon type object in .NET that will display an icon image and have a label that works like the label on an icon in Windows Explorer; maximum two-line display that expands to full-size when selected and is editable. I would also like to be able to have it contained on a Form and be able to reposition it by changing a "Location" property. I have experimented with PictureBox and Panel box objects without any success. Is there such an object available in .NET (or natively)? The editable label is especially interesting. For now I have implemented a static display use the various Graphic class methods; DrawImage and DrawString but they really do not replace the advantage of having a true icon type object that I could click and manipulate. I changed it to a details view, so I have a mixture of text boxes, combo boxes and a check box (no dgv). However, I am not able to adjust the size of the group box to fit the content. Is there a simple solution to this problem?     - Pagefile on iSCSI Disks I'm having problems creating large pagefiles on os disk conencted via MS iSCSI Initiator.     - Slow app response Hi I have replaced an ms access app with its vb.net version at a client site. Now the clients keeps complaining about how slow the app response is. The complains they have are for example when app is minimised and then trying to maximise it after a while takes a while for app to get maximised. Also form painting of controls is slow and app is generally slow in terms of response to user clicks. I am using Infragistics controls and my feeling is that makes the app bit sluggish compared to the original controls shipped with vs 2008 but I need the Infragistics controls for their features. I have also ngen'd the app but surprisingly only the main app executable gets ngen'd and not any of the dependency dlls such as Infragistics dlls.     - Converting a DataColumn's Datatype on the fly Hi everyone, I have one dataset that gets built dynamically from XML, I parse a large soap message and extract the schema from XML( I am working in .NET 1.0, sorry for the pain). anyway, by default the dataset resutling from this process has a data type of string for all columns. My question is : Is there a way to convert the datatype of columns from String to Double, or to any other format, on the fly? I know for a fact that all values in that datacolumn are all doubles. One thing I am doing is creating a new column with a datatype of double, and then looping through all existing row in the string column and then converting them, but this is a nightmare as the size of the table grows.     - Driving me nuts! How to do two-levels inheritance under UserControl? I have a few types of panels (each with different controls), which I will create dynamically and place on a form. I can make them UserControls if I need to.     - ToolStripComboBox.ComboBox What is the deal with this property? As long as the ToolStripComboBox is visible on the ToolStrip, it seems to work fine. However, if the ToolStrip gets shrunk to a size that the ToolStripComboBox is only accessable through the extension button, the ComboBox property starts behaving in a manner that I do not expect. In particular the SelectedValue property does not work. Is this by design? I can not find any articles explaining why the ComboBox would not always just work. The service needs to use a OCX (I hate to use OCX in a service but, without OCX, you wont be connected to the base station).     - RichEdit control not processing Return character I have a control inheriting from RichEdit. All is well except that it is not processing carriage returns. Meaning, when you hit Return, you will not get a new line. The previous developer overrode the WndProc, and intercepted the return character message, doing some fancy selection coding to insert a CRLF, but that's causing some other problems with the formatting. My question is, why won't the control handle the return message as I expect it to? The Multiline property is set to true. Normal, vanilla RichEdits added to a form handle the message properly, so the prev. developer must have set some property that's blocking the normal CRLF functionality.     - None GUI thread (common problem) After two years of developement, we start to realize that there is a threading problem in our application. The cardinal rule - "you should not interact with a control's properties from a thread other than the one that created the control" - has been broken a couple of times, and we're having trouble with application hang. Now there are a few places in our code that need to be examined to get rid of the problem. But there seems to be at least two things, out of our control, that can cause the same problem. First, we use a third party library of GUI components from DevExpress, and according to their knowledge base, there is a problem with the XtraForm which all our forms inherit. And second, there seems to be a problem in the .NET Framework 2.0 according to this article: http://ikriv.com:8765/en/prog/info/dotnet/MysteriousHang.html As there are potentially three sources to the hang problem, and the hangs seem to appear only infrequently, it's extreemly difficult to know for certain if the changes we make to our code make it 100% safe. Because of that I need to get the best possible resource on how this problem should be solved (or how to program GUI using multiple threads in the first place). 1. Is there some good article on this topic at MSDN, or maybe MSDN Magazine? 2. I also want to know if there is a way to get rid of the problem in .NET 2.0 Framework, described in the MysteriousHang article. Sorry to be so blunt but I'm getting nowhere and I thought I'd reach a wider audience here than in project.developer. Also I'm running out of time. All I want to do is create an instance of MS Project 2003 in Dot Net 2.0 (Winforms) and then command it through the Interop to load a project, in this case from a SQL Server db. The FileOpen command is crashing with a 'The argument value is not valid' error, and I can find virtually nothing coherent on line concerning this.     - Storing string with variable as app setting Hi I have a string expression which is evaluated based on value of a variable like this; "MyTable.MyField = (" & MyVar.ToString & ")" I need to save this expression as app setting so I can change it without having to recompile and reinstall the app every time. How do I do this? Creating and app setting say X as "MyTable.MyField = (" & MyVar.ToString & ")" does not work as My.Settings.X brings the whole expression as a literal and does not evaluate the value of variable MyVar.     - Child controls visible before dialog frame I have a dialog that takes a few seconds to load. While in the form's Load event handler, several of the child controls will become visible for a couple of seconds before the form's window frame becomes visible.     - Click once issue & desktop shortcuts Hello, The location of the Click Once Client update was changed (Cert expired), while the users desktop shortcuts remained from the Original install.     - DPI issues Are there any suggestions for developing large windows form applications (1000+ forms some with 30-50 controls on the form) in .NET 2.0 that scale properly in 96DPI and 120DPI. Microsoft ISV is discussing to switch to WPF but am curious on others have handled this. We are seeing labels show up incorrectly, headers in Data grids, or other images shown incorrectly. With all the new laptops today coming in high resolutions for their native resolution and 120 DPI it is getting harder to support just 96DPI.     - How to read sequentially from a random point in a large Xml File. Hello Have a huge XML file with multitudes of "LogEntry" nodes / text lines. A small sample of this xml/text content is below. The file could be anywhere between 200 to 2000 MB. My questions comes in two parts. (A) I would like a solution (or ideas for it), in C#, -- to randomly access a really huge xml file, and to sequentially read only the "memory permiting" number of nodes into memory, from a place randomly selected in the huge file. The application otherwise returns an out of memory error or gets very slow, if i try to load the entire file, because the user like to "scroll" through the file, viewing different parts. Like when scrolling through a huge Word document. How is this (best) done? (B) What is, and/or how would i estimate, the max amount of xml or text from the file that the application can have in it's memory? The application is both a web applicatin and a windows standalone. On a 32bit machine with 2GB Ram, the virual memory is 2GB, which gives an answer. But i have a Java app that goes in a unhandled heap error already when loading xml from a 200MB size file. Any ideas, solutions, or links concerning the above (especially (A))? One avenue is to try to base a sequential reader on a random access stream. I tried this idea. I based the XmlTextReader (for seqeuntial read) on the FileStream (for randon access), but this didnt work. There is some test code at the bottom of this email that shows some of this. I used the FileStream for random access via the FileStream.Seek(..) method. But the XmlTextReader.Read() didn't start reading from the new position. The following: FileStream.Seek(<Random NewPosition>, SeekOrigin.Begin); FileStream.Read(); would read from a the new position, but it didnt effect the positioning of XmlTextReader.Read(). Even though XmlTextReader is based on the same FileStream. It caused though the last read of the XmlTextReader to validate the xml erroneously (when the xml was actually ok). An alternative is to base a StreamReader on a FileStream. The StreamReader.BaseStream is available for random access, and the StreamReader is there for sequential read. But i think the same problem is there, as when basing the XmlTextReader on the FileStream. As a side thought to the problem, - it could be more easily solved if MicroSoft offered an indexing mechanism (for application purposes) on NTSF files. But this isn't the case. Or if i could load the huge file into a database table, but the requirement is only to use xml files (or flat files), so this isn't an option. This question involves several "technologies". So i am posting it on several newsgroups.     - HResult E_Fail Error I am just learning WPF and created a window and added a stack panel to it ( I am using the book: Pro WPF with VB 2008 (.Net 3.5) by MacDonald - in case anyone else is using this book). I added a label and a few buttons to the stack panel, experimented with a few property settings, and suddenly experienced this error when trying to add an additional button to the stack panel: HRESULT E_Fail has been returned from a call to a COM component. I am using VS Studio 2008. After this error, no control can be added -- the cursor has changed to a circle with a backslash. Recompiling the project would let me select a control from the toolbox but dropping it on the stack panel created the same error. I deleted the form and recreated it without any problems. I shut down VS2008 and got this error: VS 2008 has experienced a problem and needs to shut down . . . My first question is COM component? What does VS 2008 have do with COM?     - GUI definition in external file Hi, A little part of my (.NET 2.0) WinForm GUI need to be configurable by a user. The user can specify a variable number of items which should appear on a form like this: <Label> <Label> <ComboBox> <Label> <Label> <ComboBox> <Label> <Label> <TextBox> <Label> <Label> <CheckBox> etc. I want to store the (user changeable) definition for this in an external XML file. My 1st thought was reading the XML file and filling a DataGridView, but you can't seem to mix Edit/Text/Checkboxes in a single grid because you set the type by column. Ow well, I think I can generate the GUI dynamically placing the controls in a panel with AutoScroll set to True. But the user needs to be able to add a little dynamic behavior too. For example, if combobox1 has value "SomeValue1" and CheckBox2 is checked, TextBox1 should be disabled. Any thoughts on how I can achieve this?     - Refresh data source not working? I have data sources in my UI project, tied to collections in my library project. If I add a new property to an object, I cannot get the data source definition to reflect the new property. I try clicking Refresh, closing and opening the IDE, and rebuilding the solution.     - Forms inheritance and templates I have a project that brings up numerous forms that all follow the same format both in the way they look and work. I need to find a solution that saves me time recreating a form from scratch and at the same time allow me to make UI changes that then apply to forms that have already been created. As I understand it, templates allow me to create a base form but any changes to that base form won't be reflected in existing forms - only new ones. Inheritance seems ideal but once the form is setup, for instance with a header panel and a tabcontrol then I can longer modify these controls by adding tabs or text/buttons to the panel. How can this be though? I allocate the referenced in the "set" property of NumRows. Moreover, if I close the designer and reopen it, then all is well.     - drawing custom control In my control's constructor I set: SetStyle(ControlStyles.UserPaint, true); SetStyle(ControlStyles.AllPaintingInWmPaint, true); My reference book, "Programming Windows Forms" by Charles Petzold says this means that all painting logic is performed in the OnPaint method. I override OnPaint and do my custom drawing code. However, I noticed that if I add child controls to my UserControl, those are painted automatically. Can someone explain how the drawing of child controls works? This behavior is fine--I'd rather them automatically be drawn then have to do it myself, I just wasn't expecting it since I figured I had to do all the drawing for my custom control. At the moment, I could do by sending keys to Outlook and opening it.
However, just wondering there is better ways of doing it...??
