    - Create custom cursors in vs2005 Hello, I've tried to find something on this in the newsgroups but came up with nada: I'm trying to create a custom cursor in VS2005. I have a .cur file that I have put in my "Resources" folder. The resource manager does not recognize the .cur extension and puts it under the generic "Files" category (vs. "Images", "Icons", "Strings", etc.) When I try to refer to the cursor, like: Properties.Resources.arrowTrans, apparently it comes out to a byte[]. How can I convert this into a Cursor object? I used to have code in 2003 that used the GetManifestResourceStream method, but that doesn't work. And how does the "BaseApplicationManifest" option work in the "Build Action" item (vs. "None", "Embedded Resource", "Compile", and "Content") in the file Properties window?     - URGENT: VS2005 Text Rendering Issue First up, sorry for cross-posting. I have what is (to me, at least, an urgent issue) with the look/feel of my applications. I have been using VC# EE Beta2 until about a week ago and I have just bought VS2005 Professional RTM. All programs I've written in VC# EE now do not render text correctly. The labels and controls render much the same way as they do with .NET1.X, ugly and about 1.5 spaced. New projects look fine, like a native Windows program and don't suffer the rendering issue. For my upgraded VC B2 apps I've made sure that UseCompatibleTextRenderer = false and I've done a clean build. Can some one *please* help me with this problem. Thanks in advance, Annette. Using the new DataGridView in .NET 2.0, can the look be configured so that the days of the week are headers and the rows are subdivided into 30 min. time intervals much like Outlook allows you to schedule appointments. I'd like the same look and feel. As an option, I'd like to be able to add multiple "Customer" objects to any given cell and click on a single customer to bring up his history/appointments, etc... For example, cell at location 5,4 may contain 4 "Customer" objects, and clicking on one of the objects in that cell would bring up another for with customer information, etc...     - Application window gets smaller than MinimumSize Hello, I am writing an application in Visual Studio .NET, C#. Application is set to maximize after start. I set in Form properties MinimumSize to 800; 600. Everything is OK - I can't resize application window to be smaller than 800 x 600. But, when I set screen resolution to 800 x 600, set task bar to be always visible (and also has height of a few heights of standard task bar height - that working area of the desktop is maybe 800 x 500), application window is smaller than 800 x 600 (which was set as minimum). Application window fit working area of screen (screen size minus area of always visible task bar) which is smaller than minimum size set in Form properties. When I click on Maximize Box, application window gets bigger and fits all the screen size (some area of my application's window is then under task bar) -- it is what I want. I tried to manually set form Height to 600 on Resize event, but it did not help. How to cause that application window is always not smaller than 800 x 600 ? Looking at the MSDN2 documentation for the DataGridView.Sorted event I found the note "the current cell is not automatically persisted when sorting".     - CCeDocListDocTemplate on Windows Mobile 5.0 Problems Hello all, I am currently using the CCeDocListDocTemplate class, however, I'm having problems with it on a Dell Axim 51, which uses Windows Mobile 5.0. When the widget is used, it displays the list of files in a mangled format. The format appears to be the first character of the filename followed by the creation date of the file: So for a file named "survey.srv" it would show up as: "s11/12/17". This works fine on the Dell Axim 50, which does not use Mobile 5.0. Are there any known issues with this? Should I be using something else for the Dell Axim 51?     - ClickOnce Install returns XML .... I have deployed an application with ClickOnce Publish wizard to a web site. But when I click web page Install button the web server just returns the content of the .application file as XML to the browser on my own client. I made a quick try on two other clients and it seems that they are capable to interpret the web page correct ..... My Client: Win2000 SP4 well patched, VS2003, VS2005 Server: Win2003 version 5.2, .application MIME type added, directory configured as virtual directory or application. NO Framework 2.0.     - Send RTF formatted e-mails with outlook Hello, I want to send an RTF formatted e-mail with Outlook. I read somewhere that just assigning some rtf-code to the Mail.Body property won't work. So I tried the code that I found on http://www.outlookcode.com/d/formatmsg.htm#wordmail (I added this code at the end of this message) Making a new RTF-formatted e-mail works just fine, but the receiver of the message always sees the e-mail as plain text (no matter which e-mail format (plain text, rtf or html) he/she selected). Does anyone know how to send RTF e-mails, so that the receiver also sees the e-mail as RTF?     - Toolstripmenu and -items don't use menu system color setting I've got a customer who has set his menu text to white on black. When using a new VS2005 toolstripmenu (tsm) we run into all sorts of problems, because the tsm doesn't automatically use the menu system backcolor. The menu's all have white text on light grey backgrounds and are totally unreadable. Is this a bug? Seems like it, since they *do* take over the menu text system color as forecolor. I've tried using a small routine to walk over all toolstripmenuitems (and since they're not members of the forms controls that's tedious as well) and set their backcolors, and it works, but now the highlight color and the checkmarks remain stubbornly purple. It looks awful and annoyingly there are no properties available to set those. This way the entire toolstripmenu becomes utterly useless. Has anybody got a clue how to fix this?     - TabPage Alignment property change at runtime problems/bug Hi! When TabPage.Alignment property is changed at runtime tabs are not displayed correctly i.e. text is not displayed and visual style changes to something not seen with any of the available styles. It has been reported many times by different users. After googling for some time (can I use this word on MS forums?) I found short explanation for a reason. Setting Alignment property causes control to be destroyed and recreated with new handle and setting it with container causes the whole mess.     - Question about IComponentChangeService - OnComponentAdded() I am trying to create a service that will hook to the events fired by the IComponentChangeService. I will use this new service to automatically position controls based on their size and location, the controls have to stay for example within an area of 300, 300. So if anyone created a control outside this area the control will automatically be moved to the new location within the 300, 300 area. When you listen to the event ComponentChanged of the IComponentChangeService you get the components name, the property that changed, the new and the old value of the property. Thus when a user changes the location of a component or the size and its bounds are outside the 300, 300 area I can successfully roll back to the old property value. But now for new components you can hook to the ComponentAdded event but there is one big problem. When this event is fired the component does NOT have the location property set yet. Therefore I am wondering where or when is the Location property actually set? And why doesn't the ComponentChanged event get fired when the location property is set afterwards because that would have also fixed my problem. Klappt auch alles soweit, nur da in der anwendung vorgesehen ist, dass jeder Kunde mehrere Adressen angeben kann, wollte ich die Adressdatens=E4tze zu einem ausgew=E4hlten Kunden der =FCbersichthalber in einem TabControl darstellen. Sprich, die Tabpages werden zur Laufzeit generiert und die Textboxes erhalten alle ein Binding in der Art: txtOrt.DataBindings.Add("Text", this._ds.Tables["tblKunde.KundenAdressen"], "Adr_Ort"); - es gibt ein Tabelle Kunde mit Name und eine Tabelle Adressen mit 1:n beziehung. KundenAdressen ist die Relation - wird jetzt eine Tabpage selektiert setze ich die entsprechende Position mittels CurrencyManager fest, sodass der richtige datensatz angezeigt wird. alles ok, aber beim zur=FCck schreiben der daten in die datenbank mit der methode Update() wird nur der Datensatz gespeichert der zu dieser zeit sichtbar ist.     - How do you limit a Form's container area without changing the sze? Basically I have a form that is 400w and 400h in pixels. I want all children added (either by the designer or programatically) to be layed out within say a 300w x 300h sub area, so that the outlying 100x100 pixels are ignored as a container but still available for me to paint on.     - Use Running App All - I have used mtux to check for a running app and close it down if it a previous app instance is running. Now, when a user double clicks on one of the saved application files, I'd like for the existing instance of the application to come to the front and use the file the user double clicked. However, the code that ran fine under VS 2003 throws a run time error. The system.Windows.Forms.Application.CompanyName and ProductionName are empty. They worked find under VS 2003. GdipFillRectangleI method causes a lot of page faults We just profiled our application and noticed that SafeNativeMethods.GdipFillRectangleI method (called by Graphics.FillRectangle) in System.Drawing causes 88% of all of our -soft- page faults. We are soft faulting on an order of 2000 spfs/sec with 10 charts - with one charts we are to 600 SPFs/sec. Both numbers are high. We are a charting intensive, real-time trading .NET application that plots real time trading data on a high frequency basis.     - DataGridView Update Hi All, I am using VS 2005 and would like to accomplish the following: Assuming I have 3-4 grids on a given Windows Form. I would like to update these grids individually on a specified timer interval without blocking the UI thread. When the info is available for a specific grid, it is updated with the latest values from the SQL Server 2000 database backend. What would be the best way to do this? I think I'd need to start a new thread for each grid's Update/Refresh method or maybe even use the new BackgroundThreadWorker object. Any ideas, hints, code tips (VB.NET). Regards, Giovanni P.     - Handling the Windows "No Disk" MessageBox I have a Windows application that reads images from a CD or DVD. If the media is removed from the drive and the user selected an image to in the DataGrid, then Windows will display a MessageBox informing the user that no media exists. This MessageBox also prompts the user to Cancel, Retry, or Continue. I don't know anything about this MessageBox except that my application crashes a horrible death if the user selects Cancel or Continue. I would like to be able to handle a Cancel selection if possible. Does anyone know what this MessageBox is that Windows (XP) displays automatically? If so, do you know how to read the DialogResult from it? The crash comes when my application proceeds with trying a call that will absolutely NOT work without the media.     - Transparent label flicker when drawn on form I am having troubles with forms that have a large number of labels with transparent backgrounds causing a good deal of flicker while originally drawing the form. I have created a new label class which inherits from Label and has UserPaint and DoubleBuffer set in the control styles, and this makes no difference. In 2.0, I set double buffering on the form and this also made no difference. Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this? A form with 100 transparent background labels should not flicker the way it does on my PC (Athlon 64 3500, 512MB) - you can see each label being drawn individually.     - RadioCheck Menu options Hi, I have an application (written in c#) where I am using a context menu for some custom objects on the screen. The context menu has a sub-menu which consists of 4 options, on which I have set the RadioCheck option to true, as I want these items to function as a group of radio buttons. Since I couldn't find any option to set which group each of the items was in I assumed it would work as it is. However, when I test it, selected an item on the menu does not de-select the one that is currently selected. Surely I don't have to do that myself do I? Have I missed something?     - MSVS Forms Design View Problems Hi I am getting some unusual problems with Visual Studio design view and I assume that as an inexperienced user I am doing something wrong: 1) tabPage control page order randomises after edit -- no matter how hard I try to get the page order I want it keeps jumping back to a random order. This seems to occur only after a reasonable number of pages and added controls on each page but I have done quite complex tabPages without any problems also. 2) intermittent deletion of custom user controls from the main form after edit (usually graphical edit in the surrounding area of the user control -- even simple things like nudging adjacent standard controls for better alignment can have this effect). The worst part is Designer does this without warning and sometimes the code will build but throw an exception on run. 3) Design view lock up - on certain windows forms apps Ive attempted the design view locks for up to 60 seconds on opening the solution in VS with the form in design view or after edit + change to selected viewed document. I would be grateful of any suggestion for any of the above -- Im pretty sure Im not editing any Designer generated areas of Form1.h, however there may be other stupid little things that Im doing wrong. By happy coincidence, the topic coincided with some work I was doing, so I was able to spend some time looking at the problem. At Ron Jeffries' request, I thought I'd write a little 'thing' showing how this might work in practice. For this little example, we're going to write an application whose main form displays some text in a font the user specifies. Just to make sure we're close enough to the original post, we'll have a button that when clicked, launches a font selection dialogue. Naturally we'll proceed test first. House keeping: I'm writing this using VS2005, C#, NUnit and a modified version of NMock, the modifications to which I'll include in the source code to this example. I'm not going to test drive the initial layout of the form as it's just not interesting from the perspective of this example. Straight away we're into murky water. Showing a dialogue during a test is not generally considered a helpful thing. We need some way to prompt the user for some information, and we also need a way to test. What areas do we need to test? 1.. When the button is clicked, some action is taken by the form to solicit the user input. 2.. A font selection dialogue is displayed. 3.. If the user accepts the change to the font, the change is applied to the label. 4.. If the user rejects the change to the font, no change is applied to the label. This is where the User Interrogator steps in to lend a hand. We will separate the notion of requesting information from the user, and the UI mechanisms used to achieve this goal. We've already tested the interaction between the interrogator and the form by using a mock, so when we've TDD'd our concrete interrogator, it should just plug straight in. Earlier on, we swam out of murky water by delegating the displaying of the font selection dialogue to the interrogator. It's finally caught up with us, so what are we going to do? Let's write a test. We need to specify a couple of pieces of behaviour; firstly, that the ShowAndReturn method calls ShowDialogue on the font selection dialogue passing in the parent form as an argument. Secondly, that if the user clicks OK, the method returns the currently selected font, otherwise it returns null. In order to do this, we're going to need one of our mods to NMock, namely MarshalByRefMock. This is similar to the DynamicMock class with 2 differences, it can mock only those object which derive from MarshalByRefObject, but can mock all methods, including non-virtual ones. This makes it ideal for mocking Controls and Forms. First, we'll specify the behaviour in the event the user clicks cancel. Summary The solution I arrived at here after this coding experiment is different to the solution I arrived at originally on the TFUI list via a thought experiment. It once again serves to remind me to question the value of thought alone. Thinking is good, testing and coding is often better. As to the solution, there's a clear pattern here that should be reusable. Whenever a UI has to respond to an event, and query the user for some interaction, the way to test drive this is by separating the 3 concerns: 1..     - ClickOnce + extra ConfigFile? I developed a WindowsForms application that i want to distribute with ClickOnce. I usually develop my applications with a three-layer structure: Presentation, BusinessLogic, DataAccess. So far I have always put them in seperate projects. In VisualStudio2005 I found out that I can have a config-file in the BusinessLayer and reach it with typed properties through the My.Settings object. This is really nice since most config values are used in the Business layer! The problem arises when I want to use the inbuilt ClickOnce publishing wizard. It will not include the config file of the Business project. If I copy the config file manually and rename it, then everything works fine, so distribution is the missing part here. So what do you recommend: 1) Is there a way to force the wizard to include a specific file in the manifest? 2) Should I use MageUI.exe to create manual manifests? I really want to avoid this since it is seems quite complicated. 3) I tried to reach the My.Settings of the Presentation layer from the Business layer, but only succeeded to retrieve it with GetRawXML which gets quite complicated and untyped. Is there a better way that you know? 4) Should I skip the My.Settings typed properties and go for the old style appSettings which means BusinessLayer can reach values in the Presentation config? 5) Should I avoid the whole problem by populating a BusinessLayer Settings object from the Presentation layer on application start? 6) Should I restructure my code and put all classes in the same project, only separating them with namespaces and seperate folders?
