    - Making a menu disappear upon a toolstriptextbox keypress event? Suppose I have a main menu on my form. after clicking a few menu items with sub menus, you eventually come across a toolstriptextbox. You enter an id number and press the enter button. The keypress event of the toolstriptextbox verifies that enter was pressed, and loads data onto the form based on the id you entered. This all works well aside from one problem... the expanded menu, from the main menu, to the sub menus, to the textbox, are all still on the screen. How can I make the menu collapse or dissappear?     - Why does my datagrid only show from the first tab? I have a page with a DataGridView on a tab control. When that tab is the first tab in the collection, the DataGridView shows up correctly when I bind to my data. However, if I move that tab to not be the first one, the DataGridView never shows up. Moving the tab back results in everything being ok again. I do not understand why this is. Can someone please help me? Thanks.     - Making Dates with .NET .NET / Making Dates As with any other .NET data structure, you have to create an instance of the DateTime value type before you can use it. DateTime has seven different constructors, although three of them are just duplicates of some others with an extra parameter (a Calendar parameter used for globalization). So really there are only four constructors. Those constructors allow you to initialize a DateTime structure: =B7 To a 64-bit integer value representing a number of ticks =B7 To a specified year, month, and day =B7 To a specified year, month, day, hour, minute, and second =B7 To a specified year, month, day, hour, minute, second, and millisecond For example, this code initializes a DateTime to October 27, 1961 at 8:47 am: C# DateTime MyDate =3D new DateTime(1961, 10, 27, 08, 47, 00); VisualBasic Dim MyDate as DateTime =3D new DateTime(1961, 10, 27, 08, 47, 00) .NET Parsing Dates DateTime has two static methods that will parse a string to create a DateTime value. DateTimeFormatInfo contains information about different date formats like month/year, short and long date/time patterns, weekday and month name abbreviations, and other things that describe the myriad ways that dates and times can be formatted. Parse tries very hard to make sense of the string that's passed to it in order to create a valid DateTime value. It ignores leading and trailing white space, and unrecognized characters if possible, and it fills in missing information with the corresponding current date and time values. Parse will throw a FormatException, though, if it's unable to decipher the string you send to it. Overloaded versions of DateTime.Parse let you specify an object that implements the IFormatProvider provider to describe the expected date format. There are methods that let you add years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds to dates; and methods that will convert DateTime values to other date formats like a Windows FileTime or an OLE Automation date. The largest time unit that TimeSpan "knows" about is the day. It's impossible to convert a TimeSpan value to months, for example, because months have differing numbers of days. The same is true for years. So, if you call TimeSpan.ToString to output a value, it will be expressed in days, hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. TimeSpan has two types of properties: those that return whole values, and those that return fractional values. The Days property, for example, gets the number of whole days represented by a TimeSpan value. By contrast, the TotalDays property gets the value expressed as whole and fractional days. So if you have a TimeSpan that represents 25 hours, the value of the Days property would be 1, and the value of the TotalDays property would be 1.04167 (that is, 1 and 1/24 days). There are similar properties for hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. Of course, since TimeSpan is "just a number," you can use the standard comparison operators to see which of two values is larger or smaller, and you can use the standard operators to add and subtract TimeSpan values. TimeSpan, though, is not terribly useful all by itself. It's really intended to be used in conjunction with DateTime values. The difference between two dates, as pointed out above, is expressed in a TimeSpan. This code subtracts one date from another to get the time elapsed between them. I had originally planned to duplicate all of the DateTime properties and methods in W3CDateTime. As I got into it, though, I started thinking that I was needlessly duplicating a lot of effort. This is something of a judgement call, I'll admit. However, it seemed silly to implement the Hour property when I could just as easily call get the Hour property on W3CDateTime.DateTime. That is, these two calls would be identical: hour =3D myDate.Hour; hour =3D myDate.DateTime.Hour; In most cases, I avoided duplicating effort. The result is that I only implemented a handful of properties for W3CDateTime, all of them static. The properties that I implemented are: LocalUtcOffset returns the offset between the local time (on the computer that's running the program) and UTC time. MaxValue returns a W3CDateTime that represents the maximum value that can be represented. This value is expressed in UTC time. MinValue returns a W3CDateTime that represents the minimum value that can be represented. This value is expressed in UTC time. Now returns the current local time, expressed in the local time zone. Today returns the current date, expressed in the local time zone. The time portion is set to 00:00:00. UtcNow returns the current time, expressed in UTC time. All of these are static properties. With the exception LocalUtcOffset, all of these properties are duplicates of properties implemented by System.DateTime. The duplication seemed reasonable in these cases. New Methods I needed the ability to do comparisons on W3CDateTime values, and also to add days, months, years, etc. I also needed to subtract two dates to determine the number of days or hours between them. System.DateTime implements all of this functionality, of course, but it becomes difficult to use. For example, if I wanted to add days to a W3CDateTime to get another value, I would have to write: myDateTime =3D new W3CDateTime(myDateTime.DateTime.AddDays(5), myDateTime.UtcOffset); By creating an AddDays method, I'm now able to write: myDateTime =3D myDateTime.AddDays(5); Subtracting two dates was a little trickier in that I had to be sure to use the UtcTime property. Otherwise, subtracting dates from two different time zones would produce erroneous results. For those reasons, I implemented the AddYears, AddHours, and similar methods, as well as both overloads of the Subtract method that are supported by System.DateTime. For comparisons, I implemented a static Compare method as well as the IComparable.CompareTo method. For equality testing, I implemented Equals and GetHashCode as outlined in the SDK article Implementing the Equals Method. Finally, I implemented two conversion methods: ToLocalTime and ToUniversalTime.     - Drag and Drop between treeviews on TWO forms in MDI... Hi, I have two child forms in my MDI application. They both have treeviews with different data but in teh same format (fund, tran type) I want to be able to drag a node from one to the other but it seems it only works between one or more tree views on the same form, not different forms. How can I either enable drag and drop between two forms from treeview to treeview or maybe use a copy/paste option? thanks for any help.     - Referencing forms? I am trying to understand how to work with multiple forms. To aid in my understanding, I created a project with two forms each with a single button. When Form1's button is clicked, the form is hiddend via Me.Hide and Form2 is shown using ShowDialog. When Form2's button is clicked I want to close Form2 and show Form1. My stumbling block is how to reference Form1. I tried Form1.Show but this does not work. What am I doing wrong? This is standard behaviour. Question: While browsing in tree view, is there a possibillity for a mouseover that determines the tablename of the tablelink where the mousepointer is positioned? e.g. Tree shows links as: Table1 Table2 Table3 Table4 Now if mouse is put over Table3-link I want to know this.     - Application has generated an exception that could not be handled I have an application developed by .net framework 1.0 , the application works fine on my development machine , but on the non-development machine (the customer machine) the application sometime crashes giving this error message , note that i handeled the unhandled exceptions in my application and that also there is no a particualr scenario that produces this exception.     - How to set ListView scroll info? I have a listview whose contents are constantly being refreshed. When a refresh occurs, I delete all the items and add back. I want to maintain the scroll position before deleting all the items, and then want to restore it once the items are added back. I'm using P/Invoke Get/SetScrollInfo to get and restore the scroll information. GetScrollInfo is working fine - it returns expected information. SetScrollInfo has no effect - the scroll positions are unchanged (both horz and vert are 0). I also tried Get/SetScrollPos - no luck there, either. Is this the correct way to do this?     - MonthCalendar - display problem when selecting a date range I am using VS 2005, .net Framework 2.0 When I select a range of dates, the selected dates are whited out except for 1/2 of the first and last date (these are highlighted in blue).     - Scrollbar problem with RichTextBox Hi, I don't know if this is a bug or is it just me not finding the solution? In VC# 2005 (running Windows2000) I have a multiline RichTextBox with ScrollBars set to "Both", but not forced. So I want to see no scrollbars at the beginning, and then, while filling up the Box with text, they should appear with a proportional thumb as usual. When deleting some text, the bars should disappear again. Well, instead of that, I get the following: As long as I don't resize the window, I can type in text without problems, but no scrollbars appear when arriving at the bottom or at the right. Only when I then resize the window (might be by only 2 mm), the scrollbars appear as they should, and from then on, everything works fine untill I close the app. But when I resize before reaching the margins, then dysfunctional scrollbars appear, with nonproportional thumbs, and the stay there until the text reaches the margins, for then to turn to normal scrollbars for the rest of the app's life. This behavior is independently for the horizontal and vertical scrollbar, each of them waiting text to come to its corresponding margin (right or bottom) before starting to work as it should, provided a resize has been done once.     - TextBox AutoScale in VS 2005 designer I've recently moved to VS 2005 and .NET Framework 2.0 (from VS .NET 2003 and .NET Framework 1.1). And I have a trivial problem in designer: 1) I create a new project with default settings (C# Windows Application). OK. 2) And on the main form I put a TextBox. I set its width to 100 pixels. OK so far. 3) Now I change TextBox font to Courier New, 12pt, bold. OK. 4) I want to set the TextBox'es height to 24 pixels. And I can't. It sets its height back to 26 pixels. 5) So I want to change the property called AutoSize. TextBox inherits such a property from TextBoxBase. But it is TextBoxBase's property, not TextBox'es, so the property window doesn't show it. 6) So I modify the code generated by designer, I add a line: textbox.AutoSize = false; and change height to 24. OK, it works for a while. But when designer makes any changes to code, it removes the line above that I added and returns back to 26 pixels. Now what I can do is change the AutoSize property and Height somewhere else in code, where designer won't mess up. But: 1) It's not optimal to change the control's size twice: once when it is created with the size forced by designer, and then again change the size to what I want it to be 2) When I change it in code I lose the possibility to view visually how the final effect will be, because designer will show something different from what will be set during runtime. I want to layout controls in designer. I don't want to set all the sizes and positions at runtime in code without preview, because it's too much work with over 30 controls. And if I can't do it in designer, then VS 2005 is a useless tool. I can write code in notepad. 3) I had no such problem in .NET 1.1 and Visual Studio .NET 2003 4) I have no problem with other controls, such as Label, which has a property AutoSize on its own (not inherited) and I can change that property in designer's property window, and all works fine.     - Trouble with BindingSource I've gone through a few demos and walkthroughs trying to become familiar with the new binding in vs2005. I'm having some success, but not every time. I've create a dataset with the datasource configuration wizard. I have 3 tables in this dataset (expense, category, and type). I drag each table onto a separate form. Visual studio creates a datagridview and binding navigator on each form. When executed, the grids on each form populate correctly. The problem is that one of the tables doesn't get updated when I press save, the other two save correctly.     - Cursor on ListView Hi I have a form in which there is a treeview alongside a listview. Now I have certain conditions when the Listview control is disabled. When this happens I would want the Cursor to be of type "NO" only when the mouse is over the ListView. It should be default over the other controls on the form. I have tried many things but nothing seems to work. I am able to set the Cursor to No when the Listview is disabled ...but the cursor does not change to default if I leave the Listview control... The mouse events dont seem to help either. Next I tried using the Cursor.draw(graphics, rectangle) method with the rectangle being the size of the Listview control. I thought this would limit the No cursor only within this rectangle. But Nope did not work! I can easily, as expected, switch betwenn them with no problem. Each modeless child form must be able to create a single Modal form. I know the solution of setting the "Everyone" option by default at time of setup installation, by modifying the msi in the ORCA editor. Now, I have to create the msi with no dialog boxes(no start or progress interfaces), the problem is there's no way to change the default setting from 'Just Me' which is default to 'Everyone'. This seems like it should be simple - on the double-click event of a tablelayoutpanel, I want to know which cell was double clicked in. I can't see any of the properties that look relevant to this, could someone give me a pointer where to look? I can see various properties to give me the cell of a certain control and so on, but some cells might not have a control in yet (by double clicking the user will instigate the creation of a control in that cell - or at least that's the plan!)     - Hosting word on a form - supported My searches have not turned up anything, but is there a way to host winword on a form? It looks like the other office components are there, but word seems to be missing. Yes, I might use the browser control and navigate to a file but that seems fishy. I found some notes on SetParent and it being unreliable. Is there any official word? (Sorry for the bad pun.) The component that I am trying to interface (Dragon naturally speaking) likes word way more than it likes the richTextBox. (It has the habit of always inserting at position 2 in the rtb.) Unfortunately, all of the examples I have found only allow you to click on the button for the currently selected row. Below is a class that I wrote that displays clickable buttons for each row along with a sample form that uses the class. Hopefully this will help some people out. If you try this code, please post some feedback on suggestions for improvements or bugs. This has been in use in a few applications for a couple months and seems to be stable and reliable.     - ListView SelectedIndexChanged Firing Twice, possible solution? I know that by design, the SelectedIndexChanged event fires twice when the SelectedIndex changes, once for the unselection of the previous index, and once for the selection of the new index. This is somewhat bothersome to me because I have listeners for those events that toggle the enabled states of other controls on the form based on whether an item is selected or not, and this creates an ugly blinking effect. Is there any way to peek into the message queue and see if there is another SelectedIndexChange event coming? I know I can't see into the future, but I'm hoping the messages will be placed into the queue simultaniously and that they will both be in the queue when I recieve the first event. My current solution, which I'm not really that pleased with, is to have a Timer t on the form with a 100 millisecond interval. When the SelectedIndexChanged event fires, I check a flag to see if the timer is running. If it's not running, I start the timer and set the flag. On the Tick event of the timer, I fire my own SelectedItemChanged event, stop the timer, and reset the flag. Basically what's happening is I'm only allowing one SelectedIndex event to fire within any given 100 millisecond window.     - Width of textbox on a FlowLayoutPanel Hi, I have three textboxes on the same row on a FlowLayoutPanel. I want the one on the left and right to have a fixed width but for the one in the middle to fill any remaining space depending on the width of the FlowLayoutPanel. Is this possible? (The widths of the left and right boxes aren't known until runtime). I was thinking that I could handle the SizeChangingEvent and work out the width to set the middle text box to. This would basically be: width of FlowLayoutPanel - width of left text box- width of right text box.     - SplitContainer Transitions Folks, I am using the very helpful SplitContainer (horizontal) to show a list of items on the bottom panel and the details of a chosen item on the top panel. The top panel is initally collapsed. The user sees the details by chosing a menu item (as in File, Item Properties). When this occurs, the top panel is "un-collapsed." Our client is requesting a softer transition from not seeing the panel to suddenly seeing it (as fading in/out from the top of the form). Could you point me in the right direction as to whether this is possible? I add columns to the datagrid programmatically, each row has a few textbox column and a few combobox columns. One combobox colum is key field. If user choose a value from the key combo box, then I want the value in other cells changed accordingly based on certain logic. I could change the value of text box cells by changing the value in datatable, but the difficulty is how to change the value of combobox at the same row. After the save process the document should be saved as a MHTML stream to a database for our intranet.     - Troubles with Garbage Collector. I'm having trouble cleaning up memory in a datagrid. I have a datagrid that is set a datatable as its datasource every 5 seconds - each datatable assigned has the same structure but different content. When I perform the following line of code: this.dbgEvents.SetDataBinding(e.Table, ""); the data on the datagrid is changed to reflect the new data. The problem I am experiencing is that memory is not being cleaned up properly. I'm getting the following objects hanging around: System.WeakReference System.Windows.Forms.BindingContext.HashKey I've found these by using the .NET Memory Profiler application. As the application loops and assigns a new datasource to the datagrid these objects build up and consume memory. Hi,
I am building an application where I use a splash screen when loading the
application and I have a setting in My.Settings to control if the splash
screen should be shown or not. My problem is that when I try to check this
setting in MyApplication_startup sub it seams like the settings are not
loaded or something because the setting is set to True but when it reads it
from the startup sub its False.

Any clue?
