    - Custom form drag, does not work... why? Hi, I have a borderless form and I try to drag it. When I do it, the form start to jump from position to position even when I don't move the mouse... Hello all, After programming in C# and VB.NET for 4 years, it finally dawned upon me that something Very Fishy is going on when you create a second form. Why does it stay in memory when the form-variable goes out of scope? In FormMain I have a cmdOpenFormTest with this event handler: cmdOpenFormTest_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { FormTest frm = new FormTest(); frm.Show(); //for this test we do NOT do frm.Close() or frm.Dispose() //you may leave next line out, doesn't make a difference frm = null; } FormTest is a form with nothing on it, not even a button. I could even have done, with the same effect: Form frm = new Form(); A second button on FormMain allows me to do GC.Collect(); GC.WaitForPendingFinalizers(); GC.Collect(); Now the questions: * why does FormTest stay visible when its variable has gone out of scope a long time ago? Even after GC.Collect()? * Why doesn't the garbage collector kick in? * Why doesn't base.Finalize() run, that is, the base-base-base class's destructor? * Why don't we see .Dispose(false) running? ---------- There is a lot of interesting talk in the newsgroups about what's going on after frm.Close() and frm.Dispose(). frm.Close does a this.SendMessage(WM_CLOSE), just like in a Charles Petzold C Windows program. This comes back to the form in the WMClose() handler. Here, if I'm not mistaken (can look it up in Reflector), after some work .Dispose() is called, leading to Dispose(true), leading to the cleanup of all the unmanaged resources, underlying windows & window handles, and the like. There is also interesting talk about mem leakes related to a static hashtable with MenuItem's and references that don't go away. But in my case I do NOT call Close() or Dispose(). Who is keeping a root reference to FormTest? In the old days, using Access 95 and 97, the behaviour was as expected: if you created a second form with a local form-variable, the newly created form would immediately disappear after the local var went out of scope. I tried to figure things out with the CLR Memory Profiler from the msdn website, but I saw a lot of colourful lines and no clear call stack. Any ideas?!?!?!?!?     - SHDocVw in Separate Process I am using the SHDocVw.InternetExplorerClass in a windows console application. I assign this as my Webbrowser1 and call methods and properties from this (like Webbrowser1.Visible) and it works fine for what we need so far. However, when we start another instance of the application on the same machine, the 2nd Internet Explorer instance runs in the same process in task manager although the application grabs it's own PID with each instance. We are using Windows XP Pro (SP2). Is there a way to use the SHDocVw.InternetExplorerClass and run IE in it's own separate process with each instance of the application? Help appreciated.     - load an .exe (windows) programmatically I'm trying to write a windows Forms VB application which takes other windows applications (i.e. .exe file) as input. It then loads the .exe programmatically and looks for the Windows Forms in the .exe.     - Question about MDI child form... I have an MDI main form that shows a child. WHen the child is shown it maximizes to fit in the space available in the main form. FOr some reason when I set the window property of my child to maximize when the app runs it shows the controlbox buttons (minimize,maximize). I have disabled all the properties that would allow this to happen yet it still occurs. If i set it to run as a normal window it does what it is suppose to but that is not what I want, I want it to be maximized, is there any explanation for this? Tag: Frozen Tag: 102891

    - ProcessCmdKey up to parent form Hello, I have an MDI application which manages smaller tool windows (implemented as separate, modeless Forms), sort of like Adobe Photoshop. The menu items in the main app form can be activated using shortcuts. When I do something in one of the tool windows, keyboard focus changes to the tool window. Is there a way I can have the shortcuts for the menu items in the main app work when keyboard focus is in the tool window? I was hoping there would be a solution like overriding ProcessCmdKey, and calling the tool window's ParentForm.ProcessCmdKey(), but obviously I can't.     - Limit to range of colors displayed by Label control? Hi, I was just curious to know if there was a limit to the range of colors a label control can display. For instance if I set a label control's ForeColor to 28, 23, 15 it renders black (on my system, at least - but I'm running an nVIDIA GeForce 440 MX 64MB card running in 32-bit color, which should be plenty able to render that properly). Do I need to wrap the changes with calls to DataRow::BeginEdit and DataRow::EndEdit? After I have added the DataTable to the DataSet and, set a DataGrid to refer to the DataSet and display the DataTable I setup, can I still change stuff then? If I do, what is the proper way to update things? Should I call DataGrid::Update()?     - Windows Service and Threading What is the proper way to terminate a Thread in a Windows Service? I have a windows service which starts up three threads which run in a while loop as long as a boolean flag is set to true. These threads each sleep for X ammount of time then start processing again. Since this is a service it's basically running in an infinite loop. When the user goes to stop the service, I have been calling the Thread.Abort() method, which throws a ThreadAbortedException. I've also tried using the Thread.Interupt() method to wake any sleeping threads, but that too throws a ThreadInteruptedException. What is the proper way to kill these threads in the 30 second timeframe that the windows service framework gives a service to respond back? If catching these Exceptions are the correct way to stop the service, what is the correct way to know if the service actually dies on it's own for some reaon (i.e. god forbid locking)?     - TLB using problem I created very simple Class Library in VB 2005 (let's call it COMInterop). I set Register For COM Interop property to true to make it accessible by VB6 program. After I compiled it, I got COMInterop.dll and COMInterop.tlb files, I have no problem with using both of them on the machine where the project was compiled - TLB with VB6 clients and DLL with VB 2005 clients. I copied the tlb and dll files onto another machine and registered TLB file with regtlib.exe. I've got a message about successful registration. I created a new VB 2005 Windows Form project, added the reference to COMInterop.dll and it works fine. I created VB6 project, added a reference to this TLB. I'm trying to use it with the simple code which works with VB 2005, but produces an error in VB6: Run time error '429': ActiveX component can't create object The code in client: Private obj As COMInteropTest.COMInterop Private Sub Command1_Click() Set obj = New COMInteropTest.COMInterop 'The error occurs on this line MsgBox obj.myFunction End Sub What am I missing?     - Interacting with modal and modeless forms Hi all I am writing a piece of control software that monitors data from a data source and controls the data source peripherals. I am using a Modeless Form to monitor the data and to change the data source parameters in real time. I am using Modal Forms to control the peripherals, because these are popped up, used and closed again when required. My problem, is that whenever I open one of the Modal Forms, the Modeless Form no longer responds to input. I could do this in C++ / MFC by giving the Modeless Form a NULL owner, but it seems as though in DotNet a NULL owner impies the Main Application Form.     - Cached Configuration Data Hello, I have stored some new values in the .config file of my app. They were stored using a configuration object. If i read the value from the config object i can get the lastest values. But if i read the items using ConfigurationManager, i get old 1.1 behaviour, in that values appear to be cached.     - ClickOnce and login on as a different user Hello group I'm developing an C# Windows Forms application that I would like to deploy using ClickOnce. One of the computers that the application is deployed on, is a computer that is always loged on as a generic "controlroom" user. This is necessary for some of the other applications running on the computer. On my application, the user should always logon as himself or herself. Therefore I need to present a login form to the user as the first thing. I have been considering using RunAs, but I'm not sure that is possible along with ClickOnce, at least nok using the GUI of RunAs. I have looked at the Windows API LogonUser, but that seems to be requiring unsafe code permissions and FullTrust, and I was hoping that I could avoid giving those permissions to the application, especially when I'm deploying it using ClickOnce.     - How to find the parent form for a ContextMenuStrip Hi, I have a ContextMenuStrip that is used on various forms. When somebody opens the context menu on a specific form (e.g. Form2) and clicks a menu item, I need to execute some action on that form. The font that it returns allows singles and I can't really find anywhere that explains why this might be.
