    - CurrencyManager.AddNew - Cancel ?? Hey Gang, I posted this on .DataBinding, but that is a dead group (no activity) so I retracted it. I am actively overcoming my fears and prejudices toward DataBindinding, and have come across another issue. My setup is like this: 3 textboxes bound to a table in the dataset (tbl1). A listbox that shows all records in the table. 3 more textboxes bound to tbl2 in the same dataset, the child table of tbl1. I have 2 currency managers, one for the Parent, and one for the Child tables. The AddNew button for the child calls cmChild.AddNew I need to havdle the case where a user then clicks another record in the listbox. I get an error thrown about tbl2 fields not allowing nulls. This occurs before any events on the CurrencyManager, and After my Listbox's Click event. How would I handle this (what event), and do I just call 'CancelCurrentEdit'? Thanks!     - ActiveX Control property missing I've placed an ActiveX control on my Form and that all works OK. The one problem I'm having is that the property Location is needed, but when it's converted to a windows forms control, the Location property is now meant for the location on the form.     - Webclient and Gzip Hey, I'm trying to set up a webclient to download a couple of DLL's and an .exe file. I know my server will be set up properly to accept gzip request and deliver the content gzipped... I know how to add the accept-encoding header to the webclient. The start parameter I do set to RichTextBox1.SelectionStart -1 (remeber, the last character entered was a blank, which triggerd the event, so the last word entered ends at SelectionStart -1.     - Getting Strongly Named Flash Shockwave dlls for use with No-Touch Deployment Smart Client I am attempting to a Windows Forms application running as a Smart Client (e.g. No-Touch deployment). I found that unless I strongly named my application assembly, IEexec used by No-Touch deployment would load multiple copies of application in the download assembly cache (which would cause InvalidTypeExceptions in my application). However, my application has a Flash movie in it. The Shockwave dll's I have are not strongly named so I get the following error: "Unable to emit assembly: Referenced assembly 'AxInterop.ShockwaveFlashObjects' does not have a strong name" Strongly named assemblies cannot contain non-strongly named dll's. Does anyone know how to get or make strongly named versions of AxInterop.ShockwaveFlashObjects and Interop.ShockwaveFlashObjects? I tried using the tlbimp.exe utility, but it gives the following error: TlbImp error: The input file AxInterop.ShockwaveFlashObjects.dll' is not a valid type library. Using the picturebox Graphics object, the user can draw lines, circles and so on onto that image.     - printdialog extra copies when pointing to framework 1.1 from 1.0 I ran into a framework 1.0 printdialog problem where you always get 1 copy, no matter how many copies of print are requested. I heard that there was a fix in framework 1.1 for this problem. I used the 'supportedRuntime version="v1.1.4322' tag in my app.config file to point to framework 1.1 from my vb.net application, which was assembled under framework 1.0. I then started getting the number of copies squared. I you enter 2 copies, you get 4. If you enter 3 copies, then you get 9 copies and so on.     - Flicker and dispose Hi all Got a problem with my application. Whenever I close a form that's been shown through ShowDialog() and go back to the parent form, whatever is running behind my app (Usually VS), appears very briefly - and creates a flickering effect I've enabled double buffering on all my forms, and it has improved it somewhat, but it still occurs The problem I think is that I am calling Dispose() on each form in the Closed event. This is because we've found that DotNet often doesn't garbage collect instances of forms if they aren't explicitly disposed, so we call this.Dispose(true) GC.SuppressFinalize(this) in the Closed event. If we don't do this our app quickly starts chewing up memory and on low-end machines causes thrashing.     - Programming Methods - Separating UI & Data I have a general "programming principles" question on a project I'm currently working on. I figured I'd take a bit more of an object-oriented approach than usual since the application is pretty big. I thought that if I created one project, housed all of the classes I needed to manage data, and then created another class library project to hold all of my custom controls, I'd be set. Just reference the control project, use classes to keep track of controls and event handling for those controls, and voila. Display and data are separate entities. However, it was OK for much of the first few forms and controls. The controls were pretty transparent and did what the management classes told them to do and threw events back at the management classes. But then the inevitable "little things" started creeping in and now I have some controls processing data, events flying every which way between projects, etc. Now if I were to diagram the structure of how this works (and it does work... in some twisted way, but I don't think I could live with myself as a programmer if I left the code like this) it would look like a spider web built by a spider on crack. For those who have used this approach in it's correct form (no pun intended), are there any diagrams or articles you can throw my way that might help? Do you create arrays on the management classes side and keep track of instances of controls in the arrays, or just poll controls via For Each loops, events, etc.?     - Question about use of Hide method Is this a proper technique or just a newbie hack? I was looking for alternatives to globals I have a project with a main form I add a form X. I add a property Y and a button to X. I call X.ShowDialog() from the main form In form X, I press the button which sets the value of the property Y and then calls Me.Hide() I then retrieve the value of the property Y from X and then call X.Dispose in the main form (I came up with this myself.     - Problem with attaching help file Hi there, i have a strange problem in where i have attached a help file using the helpProvider control, and when i press F1, it loads the help, but puts it behind the actual application form. Then when i click between the help and application window, it switches between them eratically and i cant figure out why its doing this?     - Having an optional variable in the constructor causes error Hi, I am trying to pass the name of a grid I create in a form through to the grid control class I have created. I am doing this so that I can setup the grid according to the settings I store in a database. The grid I created inherits the Datagrid. I tried mybase.name but that doesn't work I just get an empty string back. My second Idea was to include an optional variable in the constructor. Just running the code this works however I do get an error message saying: 'Public Sub New([Name As String = ""])' and 'Public Sub New()' cannot overload each other because they differ only by optional parameters.     - Create an Icon from an Image safely I am building a "smart client" WinForms executable that will be launched directly from a webpage. I do not want to require any client-side installation, or .NET security policy configuration. I am trying to dynamically generate the image for a NotifyIcon. I could not find any way to get a Graphics object for an Icon, so I decided to create a Bitmap. I can create the Bitmap and generate the image: Bitmap iconImage = new Bitmap(16,16,System.Drawing.Imaging.PixelFormat.Format24bppRgb); Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(iconImage); g.Clear(Color.Transparent); // image generation is simplified for this example g.FillEllipse(Brushes.Orange, 0,0,16,16); g.Dispose(); but now I cannot figure out how to use the image in my NotifyIcon. I tried: trayIcon.Icon = Icon.FromHandle(iconImage.GetHicon()); but that throws a SecurityException when the code is run from a webpage. Apparently the Icon.FromHandle() method is considered UnsafeCode. So then I tried: System.IO.MemoryStream iconStream = new System.IO.MemoryStream(); iconImage.Save(iconStream, System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Icon); trayIcon.Icon = new Icon(iconStream, 16, 16); but the iconImage.Save() line throws the following exception: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. Parameter name: encoder at System.Drawing.Image.Save(Stream stream, ImageCodecInfo encoder, EncoderParameters encoderParams) at System.Drawing.Image.Save(Stream stream, ImageFormat format) Do I need some special Icon encoder codec installed, or is this a bug in the Framework? It looks like the ImageFormat overload is trying to call the ImageCodecInfo overload, but it is passing a null value for the encoder. Does anyone know how to make one of my approaches work? Or is there a different approach that will allow me to dynamically generate an image for my tray icon (within the security constraints of untrusted code launched from a web page)?     - No Touch Deployment and Unknown Resources Files Hello, I have a smart client application that we have launched using no-touch deployment. Everything is working fine. However, while running some performance tests, I was running an HTTP sniffer to monitor the requests being made to and from the server. I noticed that when the application is launched, it makes a series of requests for each assebly for files that do not exist. The requests are for files with .resources extentions such as: http://myurl/myfolder/en-US/myapp.resources.exe and http://myurl/myfolder/en-US/mylib.resources.dll The server returns a 404 not found which makes sense, because the files do not exist. It then procedes to make requests for different permutations of the above request as if it is trying to find the file. It makes up to 16 different requests per assembly! I am trying to get down to the bottom of why IEExec is requesting these files. My application has a fair amount of assemblies, so the startup performace is noticeably slower because of this problem. Basically, I want a listview with a bunch of items (standard ListViewItem with string values and icons to the left) but one of them needs to have a flyout menu, similar to what you see in the WinXP Start Menu's Control Panel and My Recent Documents. So some items would be shown as the normal non-expandable listview items such as 'Search' and 'Run' but then others could expand, similar to 'Control Panel and My Recent Documents' with the icon to the left and also have the triangle icon to the right.     - Control.Dispose hangs in SelectNextControl Hello Situation: WinForms 1.1 application has three Non-Modal Forms being shown at the same time: - formA is the main form (started with Application.Run) - formB has an ActiveX control on it and is minimized - formC is an ordinary form, which is activated formC now wants to close formB using formB.Dispose. somewhere in the Dispose method of formB, the ActiveX control gets disposed too. The system now hangs with 100 % cpu time on the call to Dispose of the ActiveX control. The system seems to perform and endless loop in SelectNextControl. It repeadly calls GetNextControl and CanSelect, but never gets out of this loop. This is reproducable behaviour within my application - but can't be reproduced in a simpler sample app. Also, it only hangs if formC is of a certain type (one which implements a wizard) - if it's of a simpler type, there is no hang. If anybody has experienced this already and knows a workaround or a patch, please help.
