    - Resize-thing in bottom right corner There are quite often a few small diagonal lines in the bottom right corner of applications. They indicate/suggest that the window can be resized. Also, with this code when i try to hook the MouseUp event of my panel1, i am not able to do so. After i perform a mouse click, the control doesnt transfer to the event handler.     - View a table with headers and footers Hello, I'm currently implementing an application which should display in a table. But not just a table like a ListView or a DataGrid, the table should have a footer row too. That means, there are headers, like the ones the other controls have, below follow the rows and on the bottom of the table, a footer row is displayed. The footer row must (like the headers) always be visible, while the rows between header and footer can be scrolled by the user. Has anyone of you an idea, how to implement this feature best?     - setting a default value for a column in code or XSD I want to set a date column in a datagrid view to default to today's date. I have tried two approaches and am curious about a third. Please help. 1.) How do I set the DefaultValue property of a column in and XSD? The current value of the property is <DBNull>. I want it to be today's date. I do not know the syntax and I have been unable to discover the syntax. Microsoft is not friendly in that way (or I have not yet discovered how to coax it to help me discover such things). How do I default the date and/or how do I perform a search to discover this myself? I am assuming then, that the when the user does not enter a value this defalut value will be used. Also I understand that that date will not be displayed until after the save. 2.) A preferred approach to me would be to have the datagrid view populate the value when the user begins data entry on a new record. I tried the following code but this did not work.     - Inheritance When Compiling for x64 I have several classes which inherit from classes in the NET FrameWork, e.g. ListViewEx, TreeViewEx and a BaseForm which includes elements I use in all applications. When trying to view these inherited classes in the designer I keep getting the error: The designer could not be shown for this file because none of the classes within it can be designed. The designer inspected the following classes in the file: JSysTreeView --- The base class 'JGFileManager.JBaseTreeView' could not be loaded. Ensure the assembly has been referenced and that all projects have been built. I am using the base classes from links, not from a DLL so it isn't because the DLL has been compiled for the wrong platform. Despite these messages the apps build and run correctly.     - ComboBox Binding Confusoin I have a WPF combobox in which I'm binding the SelectedIndex to a model class I've developed. Assume something similar to the following (but with different names, etc... this is a simplified version): <ComboBox Name="myCombo" ItemsSource="{Binding ComboSource}" SelectedIndex="{Binding IndexOfCombo, Mode=OneWay}" /> In my model I occasionally will set IndexOfCombo back to 0, and will then publish a NotifyPropertyChanged for IndexOfCombo. This sets the selected index of the combobox to 0 as I would expect.... UNLESS the user has already selected something int he combobox. For whatever reason, it's as though the combobox will ignore the NotifyPropertyChanged if the user has selected an item in the combobox. Is this behaviour expected? Is there a way to prohibit the combobox from ignoring the NotifyPropertyChanged event? I'm very confused as to why this is happening.     - sendkeys not working in a user control Hi, I tried an example of sendkeys to simulate pressing {ENTER} in a form.     - propertygrid browsable attribute after a lot of googling and trial and error, I now can change the browsable attribute of a field in a propertygrid. But it does not update the window directly. I tried to use good old friends Invalidate and Update, but it does not help. Only when I select a different object and then the original again, the change is visible. Anyone can tell me what I am missing?     - Child controls are visible & take up layout space but will not draw I have a user control that contains a FlowLayoutPanel. At runtime I dynamically add other controls to this panel (I've also tried using a regular Panel with manual positioning but run into the same issue that follows). When I first launch the application, my control has -- as an example -- 5 regular buttons laid out horizontally. I then navigate to another section of the UI (another TabPage, the important note being that the custom control is now hidden) and perform an action that causes the user control to add more buttons to its panel. When I go back to the user control, all the new buttons that were just added are not visible. They take up space in the client area of the FlowLayoutPanel, and if I query their Visible and Bounds properties they show up as True and well within the ClientRectangle of the containing panel. However, their OnPaint methods are never called (I've used custom controls to track this). The original 5 buttons, which I never removed, are still visible and interact correctly, and they even more to the right to make room for the new invisible buttons in the FlowLayoutPanel. But the new buttons don't show at all. Here's another good twist. If I launch the application and don't view the user control in the first place, simply skipping to the step where I cause it to rebuild its controls, then all the new buttons will show up perfectly. Something about viewing the user control causes all newly added controls to disappear (even though the controls think they're visible). It's frustrating to say the least. I've actually seen this before in a similar situation: a user control losing one or more of its children after adding/removing controls at runtime.     - Creating and returning a form from a thread - C# 2.0 Hello All, We have two applications in .NET 2.0 C#. App1 communicates with App2 throught App2's COM layer. App1 has the ability to load some of the forms exposed by App2. The problem is when the user tries to load the form from App2 for the first time the whole GUI freezes up as the UI thread gets busy in loading all the dlls etc and it sometimes takes up to 2~3 mins. to load one form. Once all the Dlls are loaded the performace of loading forms from App2 improves. I tried to put the form loading calls into a worker thread and am showing a progress window, this keeps my main thread responsive and when the form is created I save its reference in a class level variable to access it from main thread after the worker has stopped. The problem is when the worker thread is done loading the form and I call the Thread.Join, the form that I got from App2 also gets killed. I think it is related to that windows rule that says the control will only exist in the thread that creates it. Any ideas how to solve this problem? Tag: Exporting A Project As A Template Tag: 118096

    - design mode null object reference error I inherited a nightmare WinForms app ... One problem I'm having is design-time null object reference problems. This particular problem is related to a form "Form1", instances of which are instantiated and displayed on other forms. Form1 has a property ( get set ) "Property1" that is somehow getting referenced design-time and throwing the error "Code generation for property "Property1" failed. Error was: 'Property accessor 'Property1 on object 'form1' threw the following exception: 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object." I searched the entire code base for "form1.Property1" and I find it in two places. I wrap those two references in code that detects if currently in design-time mode : if ( !IsDesigner() ) { // do whatever with form1.Property1 } The IsDesigner() method is as follows : public static bool IsDesigner() { bool result = false; try { result = Process.GetCurrentProcess().ProcessName.ToLower().StartsWith( "devenv" ); } catch { } return result; } This is not solving my problem.     - Return keypress not detected A strange issue is occuring in my application. I have a user entry process with a series of steps, guided by msgs and a single splash form. The app checks that the user follows the required steps and stores data at the end of the process, during which keypresses (rtn or esc) are required at certain points. After completing the process once, the user may choose to repeat the steps followed. On the first attempt all keypresses are detected and handled in the form keydown event. However, during the second pass, detection of the Return keypress ceases. All other key presses are caught and processed correctly (I can assign the rtn processing to another key and it is processed), but Return does not even raise the keydown event. I have checked that the form keypreview is set true. there is no modification of the form's AcceptButton property. No errors are thrown during the process.     - Localization problem I have implemented localization in my windows forms application using resource file. A text file is created with <value>=<string> combination for each langauge and named beased on cuture like Resource.ja-JP.txt. Resgen is used to create .resource file from this text file. After setting the currentculture and currentUI culture to the thread, created resource manager like ResourceManager rm = ResourceManager.CreateFileBasedResourceManager("resource", path, null); After that i am reading the values like string name =rm.GetString("0288"); My application is quite big and contains lot of localized info, all the data is stored in seperate files for each language, but even a single file is around 50k in size. sometimes after doing so many operations on the application,the localized info is not getting read from the resource file, not sure whether the file is getting locked or not. I just want to know is it the best way, or is there any improvements can be made here, or is there any issue if i go ahead with the current approach. If i use satelite assembly i will have to keep them with project manifest and extra recompilation would be required. thats why i choose this approach, if any have a good idea please help me thanks.     - Keeping global stuff in a windows program. I have done lots of stuff with ASP.Net but am now starting to do stuff with VB.Net. My question is how do you keep stuff around that is global? I mean things like the user name and what not? In ASP.Net you'd put it in to Session variables but there doesn't seem to be anything like that in Windows. I want to keep things like connections to databases, user info, ... all in one place and have them persist (especially the DB connections because our connection to the DB is slow so it is slow on the open and close.)     - WebBrowser Control Hello I'm using the WebBrowser control to show some HTML content. I managed to restrict the URLs that can be opened to some known domains. Unfortunatly i can't control a file dialog popup if the HTLM code contains something like this: ... <input type="file" name="datafile" size="40"/> ...     - I can not turn on the Automatic updates and System restore fails I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop with Windows XP Professional SP3 and starting few days ago I accidentally noticed the following: 1. the Automatic Updates feature is not operational. When going into the Windows Security Center, I noticed that the Automatic Updates feature is turned off. When I clicked on the "Turn on Automatic Updates" tab I get the following message : "We're sorry.The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself , go to System in Control Panel. On the Automatic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK ". Then I went to the System - Automatic Updates : I noticed that the "Turn off Automatic Updates" tab is checked/ticked and that this tab and all the other tabs [ "Automatic (recommended) " , "Download updates for me , but let me choose when to install them" and " Notify me but don't automatically download or install them" ] are not active - that is the headings of the respective tabs are translucent, and therefore I can not check/tick any of the three tabs for turning on the automatic updates. 2. I tried to do a system restore using several earlier dates but it failed. 3. The letters "i" and "l" of the name of files within the folders appear with BROWN color. I did ful scans using Avast, Spyware Doctor, Spybot Search and Destroy and Norton Security Scan but no virus or spyware were detected. I should add that so far I managed to successfully download and install mannually all the updates using the Microsoft Update web site. Also, a couple of weeks ago I started to use Windows Steady State but 3-4 days ago I decided to remove it because it takes to much time to do the changes when restarting the computer. I also used Systernal Rootkit revealer but nothing significant was detected. I should add that I successfuly update my computer using the Microsoft Update and Windows Update websites.     - Single connection used in multi thread environment Hi all, I am using infragistics windows controls version 2007. I have used desktop alert control on a thread. New thread is work in background and fetch data after every one minutes. and if any alert data is found it generate alert window for that. I am using background worker control for secondary thread. and alert window generation code is in background worker's progresschanged event. Its working fine most of the time. But some time it creating problem i.e. some error is orroured and full of screen fill with the alert windows. and at the last application stoped working. I am not able to find out the root of this problem. why that so much of screens are generating and when screen is going to close it give index of range error.     - Disk imaging software I have Media Center 2005 rollup installed on my pc in a raid 1+0 array. I would like to create a disk image to a separate drive so that I can move to new hardware and then resetup as raid 1+0 without losing my O.S. install and media files because it would be a real pain to have to reinstall everything from scratch. I have not found any disk imaging software that says it supports media center can anyone recommend a reliable software? Also any best practices on making the hardware move I listed above?     - Help with Impersonation and GetDirectories I'm issuing Directory.GetDirectories(MyPath) and it returns an access violation error. It is a windows application (not a web application) and running locally at my desktop, not across a network. When I skip over the impersonation step, it runs under my account and works fine, because I have rights there. However, the account I am impersonating is an administrative account, and also has permissions to this directory. (All directories, in fact.) The only thing I can think of that is unusual about this is that MyPath points to a network drive: G:\projects\...yaddayadayadda... Is there a known issue with requesting a list of directories while under an impersonated session? If so, is there a workaround? Any help would be incredibly appreciated.     - Is it a bug or I am doing something wrong. Hi Guys, Sorry if I am posting it again. My first mail did not go through looks like. Please help me. I am having a strange issue. Not sure if I am doing something wrong or this is a bug. This is a sample code. This contains 2 text boxes(txtName, txtPhone) and 2 buttons (btnAdd, btnSave) Table(dtCustomers) contains three rows, with customer name "a", "b" and "c". Now I press "btnAdd" button to add a new row. I type "d" as name and "123" ad phone number. Now I press save. That's when the problem occurs. Momemt I press cm.EndCurrentEdit, it not only changes the position but it also change the row. Instead of staying with customer "d" it goes to customer "b". And I have no clue why it goes to customer "d", when it should only change the position based on the sort. Please help me. I am stuck on this for some time now. Let me know I need to include something. Please also let me know if you cannot duplicate this issue.     - Clickonce and license question question We have an application that we are using Clickonce to install on client computers. Once the application is installed, the user runs the application and is required to register the application with a license key that was e-mailed to the user along with the ClickOnce link. The registration process updates the SQL server at our ISP that the license key is now in use. We are having problems with some of our corporate users who have strict firewalls. They are unable to register the application and they get an SQL error. We switched the registration so that it now uses a webservice instead of directly linking to the SQL server but we are still having problems with some corporate users / firewalls. I am wondering if there is a better way? Basically, we want to limit each user to 1 installation per license key and we want to document when the license key has been used. The application is updated very often, so we also keep track of which version the users have installed. The added problem is that everytime we have an update, the user basically re-registers the application with the new version. It doesn't happen in the first instance of Form A though, but only after I close it and open it again. However, if I make this a static string this problem seems to be solved. Can someone please explain why is it? Is it related to b being public in A? Another question is whether I can create another class C that will function in a similar way to class A and will also be able to receive events from class B. How do I do it?     - How to disable menu shortcut keys I have shortcut keys to my menu in VS 2008 windows forms. I disable the menu item when the menu is clicked; that works fine. But the user can still press the shortcut key. What is the PREFERRED way to handle shortcut keys and when pressed, check them to verify they are valid.     - User settings two different folders for MyApp ClickOnce and .exe Hi, I have MyApplication published through ClickOnce. MyApplication has 2 functionalities: can be restarted if user chooses so, and user can save one custom user setting, i.e. his/her name. User installs MyApplication from the ClickOnce location. Then runs it using MyApplication ClickOnce application reference. User types in his name and clicks "Save". Then user clicks "Restart". Now, here comes the twist. In MyApplication I perform the restart by using: Process.Start(<relative .exe file path>, <parameter>); and so, notice that it is not relaunched by using the ClickOnce app reference, but I do it purposefuly because I want to be able to pass in a parameter on the restart. So, now I have MyApplication restarted, however I notice that the name (that user has just typed in and saved) appears to not have been saved. Why? it turns out that user settings are saved in two different locations: for MyApplication run through ClickOnce app reference, and when it is run by directly calling .exe file. Can I make ClickOnce to somehow use the same location for user settings as .exe file? Or vice versa? Has anyone run into this problem? Any solutions?     - COM1 not working Hi, I have a Dell laptop with XP Pro SP3 for my business. I have a program (Doors) that uploads data to a security system. I do these uploads about once a month. I connect to the security system via an AOpen external modem thruogh the COM1 port. It all worked fine for years but...I had to reinstall XP and now I can't get it to work. Windows recognizes the modem and prompts me to load the install CD and the drivers do get installed, according to device manager. I've uninstalled/reinstalled that program, can call my cell through hyperterm, device manager has a query to test it and it seems to pass. The program comes with a "COM port loopback test plug" and a program to test the port. The port fails that test saying that there must be either another program using that port or the port is no good. I don't know what to do. Any thoughts?     - ToolStripSplitButton how to set as checked Let me first give some context so you know what I'm trying to do. I'm building a Table PC app and I want a ToolStrip that contains three buttons, one is a pen that has a drop down to select the color, one is a highlighter that has a drop down to select the color, and the third is an eraser. The buttons should indicate which tool is selected. This is something similar to what is in the Windows Journal tool strip. The problem I'm having is that ToolStripSplitButton does not have a checked property so I cannot indicate that the button is selected when a user clicks on it.     - BUG in TabControl Mouse Events? There is an area between bottom of tab header and top of tab page that does not receive any mouse events. Area's height is 2 pixels. Any clicks, mouseover and etc events are received by control that is UNDER tabControl. Problem exists only in .NET - not in win32. In the snippet : Run the program and slowly move mouse from tab control header ("tabpage1" text) to the tab page and backwards. There is a label that shows on which control was last mouse move event. When mouse is between tabpage and tab header the label shows GroupBox despite the fact that we are on tabcontrol. The same is with click events. The snippet prints to console control on which click is performed. When we click exactly on the 2 pixels between tab header and tabpage click is also on GroupBox control that is under TabControl. Is this a bug?     - Creating a WINPE boot CD I am trying to create a WINPE boot cd so I can use ImageX to store images of the system we setup. I have downloaded 3 different set of instructions. @ I have followed all the way through. When I try to boot from the CD with the ISO file on it the system will not boot from it. The last set os instructions talk about using a BCD store to boot from. I followed all steps up to were it states "The last command returns a GUID value. Substitute GUID with this value in the following examples." The command before this line said it created the file successfully. It created a value contaning numbers, dashes and letters, total 35. I then place this number in the next comand line were the <GUID> is in the command. After I hit enter i get " THE SYSTEM CANNOT FIND THE FILE SPECIFIED."     - Continuation of Keeping a window on top...... So I created a project with just a windows form in it. I put a shockwave player on it. I added an event for keyup to grab key strokes. It didn't respond to key strokes. I took out the flash player, the key strokes work. So it looks like the shockwave player is grabing the keystrokes. How do I make this not happen.     - Keeping a window on top and having it respond to keystrokes. I have a window that I'm forcing to stay on top. The window is full screen with no border (I am running as a kiosk). I have some keystrokes that the window is supposed to respond to. I have it make itself topmost about every 30 seconds and force it to be the topmost window. Problem is - the menu doesn't respond to keystrokes. And it worked up until about two months ago and apparanetly I did something to it so it won't work.     - WMV stream seeking? I originally posted this in the microsoft.public.dotnet.general group but haven't gotten a reply. Thought I'd give it a try here. Any info at all would be appreciated... I'm writing a Netflix Watch Now player application that will be used by special needs kids. The transport buttons need to be fairly large and their function more obvious than those used on the Netflix ActiveX player control. My thought was to use a WMP control hosted on a Winform with a seperate transport bar that includes play, pause, stop, ff, and fr buttons. The stream plays back fine in WMP11 with the exception that the stream position can't be altered. In other words, it's not posible to rewind, fast forward or alter the stream position using the trackbar (it snaps back to its original position). The Netflix control allows seeking the stream using its trackbar control. I've had a look at the http traffic using Fiddler2 and can see that dragging the trackbar thumb results in requests being sent to the server that include a "Content-Range: bytes nnnnn-nnnnn/nnnnnnnn" header. Does anyone know if it's possible to do something similar using a WMP control? I've had a look at VLC and while it allows advancing the stream using the trackbar, playback is a scrambled mess so using the VLC ActiveX isn't a viable solution.     - WindowsFormsSynchronizationContext.Send: how does the delegate I did look under the hood and this method is calling Control.Invoke(). Digging deeper down I've stopped at the RuntimeMethodHandle._InvokeMethodFast() method whose code I cannot find. I know that the delegates invoked via Control.BeginInvoke() will use the window's message pump to send and retrieve the delegate and its arguments, so the control/form will not react to Windows messages while it is executing the delegate. That is the behavior I want to have as well when the delegate passed to WindowsFormsSynchronizationContext.Send() executes. For a bit of a background, I want to have this behavior in order to make sure that a grid control will not repaint itself while I'm re- populating the DataTable it is bound to. If you have other suggestions on how to ensure that the grid will not read from the DataTable at the same time a worker thread reloads it, please send them my way. We have noticed that the application crashes if a grid reads from a DataTable at the same time the worker thread is busy clearing and repopulating it. The worker thread runs the queries and then merges the results in the DataTable the controls are bound to. It is the merging of the data only that I want to execute on the UI thread. I am using VS2008.
I have created a 'base project' which includes references I commonly use
and a form inherited from my own base form. I also added some links to my
library file to try and make it easily available in all my projects.
Although I can export/save the template, when I create a new project based
on the template all the links point to a temporary folder, not to where my
library file lives. Is there a way round this, perhaps trying to persuade
VS to use absolute or relative links?
