    - Switching localizable forms language messes up design I have a C# windows forms project that was designed in Visual Studio 2003. It works great. I have recently decided to upgrade to VS 2005 and .Net 2.0. I opened the project in VS 2005 and it converted it fine. I fixed the odd obsolete line of code and it compiles and runs. The problem is that my previous design was done with the systems display set to Large Fonts. My new dev system is set to Samll Fonts because this is the default setting in windows. These means I have had to go into each form and modify it slightly but that is fine. Now, my program is setup to be localizable between english(default) and french. Whenever I need to make a change to a french version of a form I just change the language in the form properties to french and boom, there it is. Now this worked perfectly in VS 2003 but in VS 2005 when I try to change the language back to english(default) after making a mod to the french version, my whole form gets screwed up. The background colour of the form and almost all of the text box properties get reset to the windows default settings. The biggest problem about this is that it is a big form with over a hundred labels and text boxes so to have to change it back all of the time can be very time consuming. I have tried everything imaginable to get it to stop doing this. I even removed the french resx file, and switched my form to not localizable, then I switch it back and re-create the french resx file, and whenever I go back to english, it is all messed up. Does anyone have a clue as to what is wrong? Unfortunately I cannot post the code for the form as it is secret in nature.     - MDI windows list not updating I have an MDI form and multiple MDI Children. I used MdiWindowListItem to display the list of my MDI Children in my MDI's Windows menu. If I change the Text property of a Child window (Form's caption) the menu that shows the list of the Childern doesn't update ; it shows the old title. I tried to set the Child's MDIParent property to null and then back to my MDI form but it's time consuming and it's flickering. Any (other) ideas? Thanks allot.     - Zorder and splash screen Hi, I have a form which is a splash screen. A static method is used by my main program startup to show the form, which creates the form on a seperate thread and shows it using Application.Run( splash ). The problem is when my main form shows and the splash hides, the main form ends up behind any other window display (such as my web browser or explorer windows). I've read this is because the first message pump that ends causes the application to deactivate, but I haven't been able to find a solution to this. I had replaced Application.Run with this loop: while ( !shouldClose ) { Application.DoEvents(); } Where should close is a boolean that indicates if the form should close or not. Hi, Since 10 days (the first time was the 10th of november) I have some weird exception happening in an application here: All (except 1 of the total of 5) users had this error now 1 of 2 times during the last 10 days. It happens mostly during startup or closing of the application, but sometimes just in the middle of nowhere. It doesn't point to anyting special. I don't get a clue... It's a Windows Forms VB.NET 2005 application. I roll out updates regulary (once a week), but nothing special has changed in the last update before the first error. Does anybody has any idea why this happens?     - Help with double-click and drag-drop Hi: I posted this 3 days ago in another V-Studio2005 group and got no replies. There seems to be better response to requests in this group. Hope nobody minds me trying for an answer here. I have windows forms .Net 2 app. in which I was using double click to activate a form. I also wanted to be able to drag items out of one form onto another. I got both working separately, but I can't seem to get them to work together. The mousedown event is trapped by my drag-drop routine. This prevents double-click. As soon as mousedown fires, the app thinks it is dragging out. The datagridview control will not accept to have both double-=click and drag-drop both as possible user-actions. Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and have a great day!     - Can Borderless forms have a context menu in the start bar? Hi I'm currently developping a skinnable form by using a borderless form (Form.FormBorderStyle=None). Is it the right way to go in the first place? if it is.     - cType error? I'm using several routines in my program that work on properties in a textbox. The KeyPress is one of them. They all work fine for all of the textboxes listed in the Handles ... part of the sub shown below. Except for one. I have one text box, txtAdd2, that ends up being passed to the subs as 'Nothing'. So when I try to reference the object in my subroutines I get the following error: "An unhandled exception of type 'System.NullReferenceException' occurred in system.windows.forms.dll Additional information: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Here is the KeyPress event code. Stepping through the program the error triggers on the Me.SelectNextControl line because the sender is 'Nothing'.     - filtering DataGridViewComboBoxColumn contents 2 seperate but related questions 1) I have a DataGridView filled with an employee schedule, the employee is selected from a ComboBox column. Everything works fine so far. Over time, employees may be deactivated (but not deleted). The ComboBox dropdown is to list only active employees (i.e. filtered by an Active bit). This works too, but if an employee with existing lines in the schedule is deactivated, the name displayed in the ComboBox on the schedule DataGridView goes blank. It's just a display problem, the underlying data is OK and no exceptions are raised. In other words, I need the ComboBox to display ANY employee, but the dropdown to show only ACTIVE employees. What now? Custom control? --------- 2) Same project, different screen. The (nontechnical) customer decided to do some GUI designing on his own... yikes. He wants a DataGridView where the first column is ComboBoxes filled with inventroy item categories. Then the second column is to be a ComboBox of inventory items, and its dropdown should be filtered by the category selected in the first column. Usability-wise I think that makes good sense - but unfortunately I think it's not possible... is it? I suppose you could create a hidden column of BindingSources and set the filter when the first column validates, or something like that. Has anyone been through this? The inventory can contain thousands of items, even a sorted ComboBox column won't really get the job done. We almost need a "dropdown tree" column to drill down to the right item. Suggestions?     - DataGridView always displaying a Vertical scrollbar I have managed to always display a vertical scrollbar in a DataGridView by subclassing the DataGridView and handling the VerticalScrollBar.VisibleChanged event. The problem is that the horizonal scrollbar appearance is based on the visible DataGridView view without the vertical scrollbar. So if the user does a resize, about half of the last column gets covered before the horizontal scrollbar appears. It seems that DisplayRectangle tracks the correct visible size but I can't find a way to change it that will effect the horizontal scrollbar. Overriding DisplayRectangle did not work. Thanks.     - Scanning she drives Hello everyone. My problem is that I have a small network connected through a router. My problem is, I am unable to scan the other drives on the network. I am running windows XP home on two machines. I know, my friend who is running XP professional, at least on one machine is able to scan the other computer on the neck work with Norton antivirus. When I have tried it Northlands has found the drive but only scan seven files I am wondering if it is something to do with not running Windows XP professiona my friend gave me this command l\\<Computer Name>\C$ (we're computer name is the name of the drive) to test the network it could not find the path. Even though the path is correct I would appreciate any feedback on what I can try. And if that is something to do with Windows XP professional.     - Opening a browser window from a Window Form Hi there, I'm trying to open a web page in a browser. I wanted to open the default browser on the computer, rather than limiting it to IE, so I did the following (web page has been changed to protect the innocent! ;oD) // botch - this gives an error if blocked by zonealarm or other firewall try { System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("http://www.google.com/"); } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show("Error while opening browser window. Check your firewall permissions.\nError returned was : " + ex.Message); } As the comment shows, if the .NET application's access to the internet is blocked by ZoneAlarm (or a similar 'outward bound blocking' firewall) then the Start() fails - but it does not return an error or exception, or indeed return at all. Stepping through in the debugger shows that the Start() never returns and the next line is not executed. Strangely, the UI keeps working, kind of; if you then do the above a second time then it gives an exception of 'The system cannot find the file specified'. Of course it works fine if the firewall allows access, but that's not much comfort. Does anyone have a solution? Failing that, can someone suggest another way to open a web page in the default browser that does not have the above problem. Failing that, can someone suggest the best way to open a web page in IE without the above problem? Thanks tons - this one's driving me crazy...     - Get access to cookies from windows forms Hi there, I need to access cookies stored on a client computer from a windows form (in C#, .NET 2.0). I know that I can find the Temporary Internet Files stored in the Local Settings using TempInternetDir = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Cookies) + "\\"; and then use standard System.IO functions, eg string[] cookies = Directory.GetFiles(TempInternetDir); string contents = File.ReadAllText(TempInternetDir + cookieName); Unfortunately with that there are several problems, specifically (a) I can't read cookie specific details, such as expiry date, internet address, etc., and (b) the system is 'glitchy', for example deleting a file with File.Delete(TempInternetDir + cookieName) deletes the underlying text file but it's still listed in Temporary Internet Files. Can anyone suggest a way to access 'Temporary Internet Files', and cookies contained within it, legitimately, and so read the details, edit files, delete files, etc. Thanks for your help in advance.     - Different Column Widths I am trying to do a 'simple' task in a DGV control. The problem is this. I have an unbound DGV with all 'AllowUser' options disabled. RowHeader.Visible=False ColumnHeader.Text is labelled as needed. For simplicity the DGV has 7 columns and 15 rows. The 15 rows are populated and the DGV is made visible. Everything is just fine. But now I want rows 6,7 and 11,12 to have different column spacing to the other rows. I have not been able to find a way.     - Unexpected events being raised when button is disabled I have 4 buttons ( 3 in one tab page 1 in another tab page) of a windows form. There is also a group of radio buttons. The single button on the second tab page is called Run. When RUN button is clicked, there is code to disable all the 4 buttons including the run button. However, the moment the line of code, run.enabled= false is reached the radio button clicked event gets fired.     - problem with DataSet.GetXml() method Hi guys! i've filled the DatSet object and was trying to get xml data from it. i used GetXml() method for that. it worked fine when all columns of the datatable has data. it generates perfectly fine xml but when if one column in datatable has no data(null), the method doesnt generates xml for that column. for example : i've table in sql server database called temp1 which has 4 columns but sometimes only 1,3 column has data and 2,4 column doesnt has data. which looks like this col1 col2 col3 col4 1 NULL 1 NULL when i fetch data from the database into the dataset and try to get xml of that data, it looks like this: <NewDataSet> <Temp1> <col1>1</col1> <col3>1</col3> </Temp1> </NewDataSet> another thing that is happening in process is, after fetching the data into the dataset i'm extracting the datatable from the dataset and insert into another dataset and then i call the GetXml() method of the dataset. can anyone tell me what i'm missing or is there any other way to do this? thanks Lucky Tag: Dynamically view fonts not installed Tag: 106762

    - WebBrowser DocumentCompleted and Print() Hi, I am using the WebBrowser control in a winform app (.NET 2.0, WinXP SP2). I am loading a local file which contains Javascript which dynamically modifies the layout of the page when it loads. When I set the URL to this file and then call Print(), it prints correctly (Javascript is executed). When I call Print() in DocumentCompleted, it prints incorrectly (as though the Javascript is not executed) even though the page displays correctly in the embedded browser. I have tried testing for IsBusy and WebBrowserReadyState.Complete but it does not make a difference. Does anyone understand why this is happening? Am a forgetting to set something?     - Dynamically adding controls to tabcontrol I'm trying to dynamically position a combo and label on a tabcontrol. The old Infragistics tabcontrol made this easy, but I'm trying to do it with VS2005 common controls. Well, I cannot dynamically add a control to a tabcontrol directly -- as the message says, "Cannot add 'ComboBox' to TabControl. Only TabPages can be directly added to TabControls." Sooooo .. what I am doing instead is to Add and Remove the combo and label to each of the 8 tabpages as the tab is selected. This I *can* do, but I'm not sure if this is the correct or best approach -- just one that works. What I'm doing is to only create the combo and label in code, not in the designer. I instantiate the control in the InitializeComponent then as each tabpage selection is made, Add the combo to the tabpage and ALSO Remove the combo from ALL the other tabpages. Any thoughts from anyone who has been through this?     - Display SELECT results on two dates (datagrid and textbox in vb) I dont know why I am having so much problems with this. I cant find an example anywhere. I have a datagrid and I want to fill it using two textboxes, one with start date and the other with end date. I've even tried to Dim variables for the txtStartDate.Text and txtEndDate.Text and placed them where the ? are but when I run it a green bar highlights the .Fill(DataSet11) below and stops but I can place my cursor on the variable and see the content (ie #3/12/2006# and #3/22/2006#) but will not fill the datagrid. Let's say I have a document loaded in a RichTextBox - I want to see how it
looks with a certain font, however, the font is not loaded (in another
directory)

Is there a way, with VB.Net, to view text in an application (set the
RichTextBox's Font), with a non-installed font?
