    - Overlapping panels Hi, I have a form. On the form's client area I place a panel control.The form is panel's parent. I create buttons and place them on the panel. The panel is parent of the buttons. I create second panel and place it on the first panel. The problem is that the buttons of the first panel are visible and operative, popping through the second panel. I can hide the buttons programatically but shouldn't they disappear by themselves after a new control is placed on them (or their parent)?     - Msgbox Appearing BEHIND application Form We have a weird problem, where we are popping up a msgbox, and intermittently it is displaying BEHIND the main app form. Basically, our form is up, we call a simple msgbox, and 97 times out of 100 it pops up exactly right. 3 times out of 100 it pops up behind the app. It panics the user, as they can no longer click on the app. They must minimize the app, click on the dialog, then restore the app. We have tried "MsgBoxStyle.MsgBoxSetForeground" and "MsgBoxStyle.ApplicationModal" to no avail...     - Troubleshoot Possible Memory/Slowdown Problems We have rolled out an app, and are experiencing complete application and system slowdown as users open and close windows forms in our app throughout the day. It usually happens about 50 or so form opening/closing cycles. If the user notices the app is slowing down, and they exit the app then go back in, it works fine for another 50 or so open/closes. If they keep pushing it, and go another 20-30 times, it will eventually be so slow the form takes 2-3 minutes to redraw, and will eventually lock their PC, forcing a reboot. The forms do have quite a few controls on them. They do talk to a database, but not using bound forms, and the data access is pretty small. We have tried setting all objects to nothing at the end of all procedures, doing GC.Collect, other things, but can't quite nail it down... The client machines are all WinXP SP1, P4 2.XGhz, 512MB RAM or better. Version 1.0 of the framework, VS2002. Any ideas on troubleshooting this? Is there a specific memory counter somewhere I can monitor or display on the form, so I can see if it goes down? The task manager memory for the app grows and grows, but I understand that may not be a real accurate gauge of memory usage. Thanks!     - Moving a control on form with mouse event? I am new to VB.Net and have done a little VB3 &4. Whith the advent of the Net aspect oto OOP I would like to use a standard winform that a user can do several things. 1. Place predetermined line shapes on the form and save their location with the closing of the form. 2. I would like to add a saveable text/label control that is movable around the form with the mouse. In other words I wlll want to drag the control from one spot on the form to another location. Preferable the locations will dock to the line image drawing on the form back ground.     - Problem showing records in Columnar view I've been using dotNet for some time now and understand the basic concepts of data binding using datasets and DataViews. However, I am experiencing an odd behaviour in my program which I would like to explain below in plain English first. I can post the code later on if required. Please be patient with me as I try to explain my problem. It's been haunting me for days. First the basics ... I am using VB.Net with an MS Access database in the backend. I am using OleDbDataAdapter to populate my dataset. Also, there are no 3rd party controls being used. My Access database contains 2 tables - qMaster and qVersion. For the sake of simplicity, let's say that each record in the qMaster table can have anywhere upto 9 records (I'll call them Versions from now on) in the qVersion table. The key field in "qMaster" is [QuoteNo] and the key fields in "qVersion" are [QuoteNo] and [QuoteVr]. "qMaster" and "qVersion" are linked to each other via [QuoteNo]. I am able to create the OleDbDataAdapter, populate it with data from my tables and fill the DataSet with no problems at all. The problems start thereafter ... Here comes the first problem ... I would like to display all 9 versions (records) side-by-side as columns just like you would see in a spreadsheet, instead of showing them down the rows (for which I could have easily used a DataGrid). To achieve this goal, I created 9 DataViews against the DataSet where the RowFilter for each DataView is set to "QuoteVr=1", "QuoteVr=2", ... and so on. I've created a User Control with assorted text boxes (let's say 10 in total) in it for each of the fields in the "qVersion" table plus some extra calculated ones. I copied the UserControl 9 times onto my form and DataBound each UserControl to a different DataView. I've already created properties for each of the fields/textBoxes in the User Control so I can assign values and perform DataBindings easily. These 9 UserControls are sitting on the first TabPage of a TabControl on my form. On the second TabPage of the TabControl, I then went ahead and created 10 textBoxes same as what I did in the UserControl. These 10 boxes on the second TabPage are bound directly to the DataSet, so that I can navigate through the DataSet using the DataBinding's Position property. I am then capturing the "Enter" event of the UserControl (which is data-bound to the DataView) to determine which Version it is bound to and automatically navigate to the desired record on the second TabPage by setting the DataBinding's Position to the desired record position. So far so good. (Just as an aside - is this the best way to achieve my goal or is there an easier way to do it, i.e. display records as columns! I do not consider myself an expert and any help would be greatly appreciated). The problem starts when I start updating my textboxes. If I do any direct input into any of the textBoxes either within the UserControl on the first tabPage (bound to DataViews) or to the textBoxes on the second tabPage (bound directly to the DataSet), the values change properly between the two tabPages. However, anywhere that I use textBoxes to display calculated values end up behaving oddly. The calculated values show up properly on the 2nd tabPage (bound to DataSet directly) but when I hit the Update button, here is what it does ... it will go ahead and save any changed data that was directly input in the textBoxes but will not update any of the calculated textBox values. I know common logic dictates that you do not need to save any calculated values back in the database as you can recalculate these on-the-fly. However, my application demands this for other reasons. Also if I were to switch between the 2 tabPages I would loose all my calculated values, but not the ones directly entered. That's funny - I don't know how to explain this. Say I had to work with 3 fields only, 2 input and 1 output - and initially the 2 input fields show the values 2 and 3 and the output box (which just adds the 2 numbers) shows 5. Now if I change 2 to 4, the output box correctly shows 7 on the 2nd tabPage but if I switch to the 1st tabPage it reverts back to 5, but the input boxes are still showing 4 and 3. If I save the value 4 is correctly updated but the calculated value is not. I'm at a total loss here. I've tried using EndCurrentEdit but to no avail. I am guessing it has something to do with the CurrencyManager but don't know what to do. Please help.     - databinding not working for lookup combobox, please help! I'm having the worst time trying to get a combobox to synchronize with a datagrid. I have two tables: Products and ProductLines. One of the fields in the Products table is ProductLineID. I want a form that displays a datagrid showing the Products, and a separate combobox down-down control that shows the available product lines from the table of that name. When the user selects a row in the grid, I want the combobox to update with the correct value, and when the combobox is changed, I want the data for the selected row in the datagrid to update. Sounds easy, and I can get textbox databinding to work like a charm. I followed instructions from a Microsoft article on doing this combobox lookup, but it didn't work. This code runs when the form loads: SqlDataAdapter1.Fill(DataSet11) SqlDataAdapter2.Fill(DataSet11) DataSet11.Relations.Add(New DataRelation("Relation1", _ DataSet11.ProductLines.ProductLineIDColumn, _ DataSet11.Products.ProductLineIDColumn)) For the combobox, I set these properties in the Properties window: DataSource = DataSet11.ProductLines DisplayMember = ProductLineName ValueMember = ProductLineID I set the value member to the ProductLineID because I want to store the ID in the Products table, not the name text. Under the (DataBindings) section, it now reads: SelectedValue = DataSet11 - Products.ProductLineID When I run this simple app, the datagrid works fine. The combobox populates with all of the product lines, but when I select a product in the datagrid that has a different product line, the combobox doesn't update; and when I change the selection in the combobox, the ProductLineID field in the datagrid doesn't change. The problem is that Winforms bubbles ProcessDialogChar up to the top level window, which in this case, is the MdiContainer. MDI child form (call it form A) has a hot key assigned (say, for example, a command button that says 'Message', hot key on the M (text = &Message) which just displays a message box, and another button which opens a second MDI child form (call it form B). That all seems normal - here's where the app is behaving badly: 1) Open form A. 2) from form A, open form B 3) when B has focus, press Alt-M You will see that the hot key will be processed by form A, which DOES NOT HAVE THE FOCUS!!!! Not sure if this behavior is specific to MDI children forms and some sequence of opening them, but it should not function like that.     - Controls don't overlap on design form, but do at runtime I left a Microsft DevDays some months ago with the idea that if you anchored all of your controls to all four sides, then the screen would size up proportionally when the form was maximized or made larger. My current test form most emphatically does not do this - controls overlap on each other in a most ugly fashion. My scroll bar next to a multi line text box ends up half the width of the screen. The data grid on the top half and the edit box on the bottom half both expand to well over half the screen. Does anybody have any ideas on how to make a form size up gracefully?     - Newbie question/gripe I'm in my first couple hours with .NET 2003. I created a C++ project and started working on a Windows Form. Should .NET not be totally inappropriate to my purposes, I'll gradually start migrating a monolithic/Client Server app (currently using ADO) to it. On my first attempt to run my form I got a browser with a message that I should change the Web Services namespace for my project. My reaction was "What the h*ll are you doing in my face?". I intentionally chose Windows Forms over Web Forms because I don't want to run in a browser or over the web. I sure didn't get the form I had designed. What should I do to write applications that don't try to invoke HTTP without my permission and simply work on the machine they are running on?     - invoking on UI thread I understand the notion that a UI thread should be responsible for managing the UI elements; therefore, worker threads need to call invoke on a control. I don't understand the technical reason for this. What is it about the Win32 message loop that doesn't like worker threads to update the UI and why does it work anyway (at least most of the time)?     - Unloadable Control Is it possible to implement a control that can be loaded into, and later unloaded from current the process when it is no longer needed? I've been able to do this with other classes by subclassing MarshalByRefObject, putting it in it's own assembly, and loading it into its own AppDomain (which can later be unloaded). But as far as I can tell, this isn't as easy with a System.Windows.Form.Control descendant (even though they descend from MarshalByRefObject). The first problem I've run into is that as soon as I try to use the control (which was created in a different AppDomain), I get a SerializationException because the ControlCollection class (of the parent) is not a descendant of MarshalByRefObject (or serializable). Apparantly, controls need to reference that collection in some way, when they are added to the parent (which is in the original AppDomain in this situation). So my question is, is there some way to implement an unloadable control, where all it's code is in an assembly that can be loaded-into/unloaded-from the process? There may be workarounds, like just making the code behind the control's events unloadable, and not the control itself. But for my purposes, the control wouldn't be generic enough for something like that. A good analagy would be a user control for implementing a propery sheet.     - Rich Text Box control ( RichTextBox ) Drag and Drop problem Hello! I have tried a few things to get drag and drop to work in the rich text box control. The best example I have come across is point 22.3 of: http://www.syncfusion.com/FAQ/WinForms/FAQ_c89c.asp#q572q However, there is a slight problem in that the drag and drop does not work if the *very first* drag and drop operation you do is from within the control itself (i.e. dragging from and dropping into the control). The drop cursor changes to the 'prevent drop' cursor (/). After this first attempt though, drag and drop works fine! Can anybody help? Even the MSDN help isn't useful (to be honest it just doesn't work - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814309) Thanks, Al.     - Drag and Drop between ListView and TreeView.?! I've got a treeview and listview program which i would like to add a drag and drop utility to it. i've managed to drag and drop items from the treeview to the listview, from the treeview to itself. but i cudn't do the same from the listview to the treeview.?!! i would like to be able to drag and drop items/nodes from both to either one of them and update the data automatically and refresh the controls.     - Strange ComboBox Binding Behaviour I am trying to bind multiple comboboxes here to the same datasource. The problem for me is, after each DetailPanel is created for each row retrieved for the Grid DataWindow, I have to set the ComboBox.SelectedValue to the value in the DataBase. When i go to do that, i find out that there are no Items in the ComboBox. This is how the events have been organised in my Control For Each DataRow 1) Create Host DetailPanel for the Row 2) Replicate all the ChildControls for the Row (using reflection) 3) Bind ComboBox's on the new DetailPanel 4) Set values of the Current Row in the DetailPanel End For I have double checked that these two functions are the only place where anything related to ComboBox is happening in my application. Anyone who is aware of such problems / has any idea why is this happening / any solution.     - Print with feed tractor laserjet and customized papersize Hi, I have a problem with a laser feed tractor printer, paper size is 8.3 X 11 inc.. For print in windows xp home from a c# application i use a custom paper size added at the printer server properties. The problem is that i have to print a value near bottom margin (sheets are pre-printed), but if i use custom papersize this value will not printed, i think because there is a bottom margin, but in my custom paper size i have set all margins to 0.00 . Is there any solution? Is teher any way to set bottom margin to 0 (is a feed tractor printer!)? If i set custom paper size more height the bottom value is printer but the printer don't stop exacly at the end of the sheet, and the next print begin with a bigger upper margin. Also: - how can i user c# to add a custom print from to SO? - i have to use a print from, or i can simply use c# code to specify custom paper size? - how set printer papersize and papersource from c#?     - MDI Child Form Not Releasing DataSet I have an application that creates MDI child windows to edit different datatables in the same dataset. At one point in the application cycle, users have the opportunity to log off the database server (so they can reconnect to a different one). As part of that log off, I clear the dataset. Unfortunately, if an MDI child form has been opened and then closed, the datatable for that form hangs on the clear (i.e., aDataTable.Clear() stalls forever). This problem does not occur if that table's form has not been opened and closed. This seems to be a problem where the MDI child form, while "closed", is still maintaining a reference to the datatable (probably through databinding?). How do I get rid of this reference so that datatable can be cleared? I've tried setting the MDIParent property of the MDIChild form to null in an event handler for the MDIParent form that watches for MDIChild Close events, followed by a call to MDIChild.Dispose(). Unfortunately, that does't solve the problem. Any leads or workarounds would be greatly appreciated. - Mark p.s. BTW, this is looks to be the second "silent failure" of the NET Framework I've come across in the past week (the first had to do with the way the Framework's handling of DBNull values for bound DateTimePicker controls breaks the BindingContext.Position code, with no outward sign of a problem). I'm beginning to think the NET Framework design team didn't take enough advantage of exception handling in developing the Framework.     - automatic code generation I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but it has to do with the automatic code generation of a WinForm for the Compact Framework. Anyway, I thought I'd report an issue I've been having. I subclass a control to define my own button class that can draw custom images (since the CF does not permit this as is). Anyway, to add it to my winForm, I manually add it in among the automatically generated code, adding it to the proper tab control, etc. I build it, run it, and it works fine. Sometimes if I then hide the automatically generated code (w/ my newly added code interspersed) and proceed to edit the WinForm through the GUI interface provided in VS .NET 2003 C#, at some point, the code I intertwined w/ the automatically generated code disappears. I haven't nailed down the exact procedure that causes the problem b/c each test I have to re-write the inter-mixed code. Right now it isn't a big deal for me, but in the future it might become an issue. I suspect that at some point, the compiler may be re-generating the automatically generated code but doesn't realize I've edited it? Oh, and before it removes the code, an error might pop up saying my class is uninitialized, but if I build my project, it sees that it is initialized (among the auto-gen code) and builds fine.     - Alternative to TransparencyKey property? Hi, I'm trying to convert an application from C++ to CSharp. Under C++ I used the SetLayeredWindowAttributes() API to make parts of my form transparent. Now in CSharp, I was trying the forms TransparencyKey property. However, it doesn't work on my system with 32bit display and I found this confirmed by other posts on this topic.     - Mouse Events in Nested Controls Hi all, I am wondering what the "normal" behavior for mouse events(click,down, etc..) within nested controls is. Do the mouse events fire for the container control and the child control if you click on the child control? Or only the child control? or only the parent control? The reason I am asking is because I have a Panel which has many child Panels within it. When I hook up a mouse event (mousedown,click) to the parent, it does not fire when I click on the child control. I was hoping it would fire so I could use GetChildAtPoint to access the child control. The event DID fire when I clicked on part of the panel without a child control. I then opted to hook up the mousedown event inside my child control and simply have it act upon the parent control to do the work. Unfortunately, the event does not fire here either!?     - DataGrid and unbound text boxes I'm building a VB.Net Windows form application. I have a DataGrid and 5 unbound textboxes on a form. The DataGrid is populated with a OleDbDataAdapter and is using a table called Clients. What I want to do is have the users fill in the unbound textboxes and click a button and have those values inserted into the table clients. I will then refresh the datagrid and the new values will appear. I created a New Connection, A New DataSet and A New Select Command to the table Clients.     - Memory Issue I am developing a application and I think I have a memory leak, but I am not sure.     - how to set focus on a combobox on a tab when the form is loaded? Hi, I have a form with 3 tabs and each tab has a combobox on it. When the form is loaded, I determine which tab to display based on parameters passed into the form's New() method. When the form is loaded, I would like to place the cursor in the combobox of the selected tab, place some text in the combobox, and highlight the text. However, not only am I unable to get the cursor in the combobox (combo.focus () executes, but does not do it), assigning the text to combo.text does not show the text in the combobox. combo.SelectAll combo.SelectedText = [my text] creates an error, apparently because combo has not been fully loaded yet.     - .NET DataGrid vs. 3rd party controls I have not done much work with .NET yet but we are trying to decide whether the grid that Microsoft provides is going to provide enough functionality for us. generation of rows in the datagrid (last row shouldnt be
the new row with empty values)..in addition to this the
datagrid should not be readonly..that is I should be
allowed to edit the values in datagrid.
