Hi, 1. Main form creates other top-level winform windows at run-time (new window parent == null) from a pre-defined form template as : secondaryFormTemplate newSForm = new secondaryFormTemplate(); // set formborderstyle, set to topmost, toplevel, etc. newSForm.Show; 2. On each secondary winform you create there is treeview (which has public accessor); you subscribe to the After_Select event of each Treeview IN THE MAIN FORM with the same event handler in the main form like so : newSForm.myTreeView.After_Select += new System.Windows.Forms.TreeViewEventHandler(secondaryTVHitHandler); 3. so the handler for all secondary treeview selection in the main form looks something like this : private void secondaryTVHitHandler(object sender TreeViewEventArgs e) { // do whatever, get the node from e.Node, etc. } This compiles okay, seems to work okay most of the time, but once in a while it appears that node selections in some of the secondary windows are not reported to the subscriber in the main form. So, I switched back to the more "classic" paradigm of having the secondary form template implement an After_Select event which raises a public event, which I then subscribe to in the main Form. Intermittent problems of some selection events went away. My question is : were the glitches I observed using the first technique possibly a result of threading problems involving separate independent top-level winforms ? Another hypothesis : the .net TreeView (now, like me, so long in the tooth :) is, as we all know, a wrapper around a COM control ... issues related to COM ? My sense is that it is "best practice" to have objects raise public events from their own internal private events, rather than have "alien objects" subscribe directly to events of objects, but in the case where the secondary objects (winforms in this case) are being created at run-time by a "master object" it is "tempting" to just subscribe to their events there.     - Overriding dataset connection Hi I have a windows form app with one master table and several details (grids). As I am filling both the master and details using vs 2005 generated dataset and data adapters, there are multiple connection open/close during the whole operation (one connection open/close per adapter fill). Is there a way to override the vs generated connection management code to open the connection only once at start, do all fills and then close the connection at the end, to speed up the whole fill process? As dumping the vs 2008 dataset altogether will involve too much code writing, I am reluctant to let go of it and would prefer to only override the connection management if I can.     - Problem Drawing in a ListBox Subclass Good afternoon, everyone. I've subclassed ListBox to draw an icon next to each line, and it works! Except for one thing... when drawing items, it seems that SelectedItems and SelectedIndices is not perfectly current. This means that if I use it to draw, in some cases I may draw an item highlighted when it shouldn't be, or vice-versa. This mostly happens when dragging to select multiple entries. My temporary solution is to force a Refresh after every SelectionChanged event, but this makes the list less responsive. Basically, I'd like it to paint just like a normal listbox. So far I've only used this with an extended multi-select list box. This is the relevant code in my subclass: // Constructor: ...     - Draw PDF onto GDI+ Surface I have a WinForm application. I would like to be able to read a PDF, and draw it onto the GDI+ drawing surface, along with other commands that I would draw on the surface, to then print it. But is it OK to construct, show and update new Forms inside the thread? While it's great that Microsoft has released the .NET Reference Source Code, you can only get it one file at a time while you're debugging. If you'd like to batch download it for reading or to populate the cache, you'd have to write a program that instantiated and called each method in the Framework Class Library. Fortunately, .NET Mass Downloader comes to the rescue! Using .NET Mass Downloader Open a command or PowerShell prompt and navigate to where you extracted the current release. The tool itself is NetMassDownloader.exe and when run without parameters shows the following help screen: .Net Mass Downloader 1.0.0.0 - (c) 2008 by Kerem Kusmezer, John Robbins Batch download the Microsoft .NET Reference Source code. Usage: NetMassDownloader [-file <file>] [-directory <directory] [-output <directory>] [-vsver <version>] [-force] [-nologo] [-verbose] [-?] -file - Download an individual file's PDB and source code. You can specify multiple file parameters. (Short -f). -directory - Download all the found PDB and source code for all files in the specified directory. You can specify multiple directory parameters (Short -d). -output - The output directory for PDB and source files. The default directory is the cache directory set in Visual Studio 2008. By using the cache directory, you'll have the PDB and source files available to Visual Studio 2008. However, to use the .NET Reference Source Code with VS 2005, use the - output switch and in the Options dialog, Debugging, Symbols property page, add the specified output directory to the "Symbol file (.pdb) locations." Also, add the directory to the Solution Properties, Common Properties, Debug Source Files, Directories containing source code location. The Visual Studio 2005 debugger will automatically load the source code. (Short -o) -vsver - The Visual Studio version number to use for finding the cache directory. The default is Visual Studio 2008, but if you want to use the cache directory for Visual Studio 2005, you would pass '-vsver 8.0' (without quotes) (Short -vs) -force - If specified, forces the downloading the PDB files into the symbol server. When downloading to a symbol server if the PDB exists, it's not downloaded. Using the -output switch will always download and process the PDB. (Short -fo) -nologo - Don't show the logo information. (Short -n) -verbose - Do verbose output. May be worth turning on as the downloading source code can take a long time. (Short -v) -? - This help message. The only required arguments are -file or -directory, both of which can be specified as many times as you'd like. When you specify a directory, only the .DLL and .EXE files from that directory will be processed. If you wanted to download all the source code from binaries in the .NET 2.0 32-bit and 64-bit directories, the command line you'd pass is: -d C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 -d C:\Windows \Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727. The main purpose of Net Mass Downloader is to populate the source code download cache for debugging, the default download location is the cache you specified to Visual Studio 2008. The -vsver switch to account for future Visual Studio versions so Mass Downloader could work with future CTPs and versions. While it's great to see the .NET Reference Source Code in Visual Studio 2008, there are a lot of developers out there who can't upgrade yet, but would love to be able to debug into the .NET Reference Source Code. If you specify the -output parameter, the PDB and .NET Reference Source Code will be written to the specified directory. In Visual Studio 2005, place that directory in the Options dialog, Debugging, Symbols property page. In the "Symbol file (.pdb) locations" list box as the first item. Also in the Options dialog, Debugging, General property page, uncheck "Require source files to exactly match the original version." Finally, in each Visual Studio 2005 project go into the solution property pages, Common Properties, Debugging Source Files, and in the "Directories containing source code" add the output directory to the top of the list. That's enough for Visual Studio 2005 to debug into the .NET Reference Source Code. When you first run Net Mass Downloader, you will be prompted with the current EULA for accessing the source code. If you don't agree with the Microsoft EULA, clicking the Decline button will not download the source code.     - Invisible MessageBox? On grid DoubleClick I call MessageBox.Show to display some information. The instruction will be executed but the dialog box is nowhere on the screen!!. The main application is now disabled, pressing ESC "closes" invisible dialog box and focus returns to the application. I added a button and on Click I do what DoubleClick should and all is OK.     - Dynamic Menus + Click Event Hello, I am trying to create a contextmenustrip with drop downs dynamically. I have everything visually working. Each menu appears across the screen as well as each of their corresponding sub (drop down) menus. My problems has become that I need to put some sort of onclick event on these drop down items so that they actually do something. I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. Any advice?     - MDI Parent Child Maximize form issue Hi, I have a situation where I have a MDI Parent form that contains a menuStrip control at the top. When I launch a Child Form I specify: frmChild.WindowState = FormWindowState.Maximized; The problem is that the maximize/minimize buttons on the Child Form appear above the MDI Parent's menuStrip...not below it where I would expect it.     - Relative path that works in development and after deployment I was wondering if somebody could show me on how to use relative path in windows application that will work during DEVELOPMENT as well as after DEPLOYMENT. In short, here's my situation. During development the files in my project are located as follows: MyProject\bin\Release\MyApplication.exe MyProject\Settings\MyXMLFile.xml During development I use this syntax to load to MyXMLFile.xml from the .exe: xmlDocument.Load(@"..\..\Settings\MyXMLFile.xml"); Everything was fine until after I deployed the project whereas the file location now changed to: C:\Program Files\MyProject\MyApplication.exe C:\Program Files\MyProject\Settings\MyXMLFile.xml Now I started to get an error message stating that file 'C:\Settings\MyXMLFile.xml doesn't exist'. Please keep in mind these limitations: 1. I do not want to hard-code the relative path in app.config, I just want to use relative path. 2. I cannot use resource file because I need to change the MyXMLFile.xml during runtime. 3. Basically what I need is the relative path that can point to the project folder instead of the .exe, much like ~ sign to point to application root folder in web application.     - Fast control for bus monitor I am writing a bus monitor / protocol analyzer using VS 2005 C++/CLI. Currently I am using a RichTextBox to display the messages. I am adding each message with AppendText. This seems to be very slow; the RichTextBox cannot keep up with the speed at which the messages come in. Is there a faster way to append new strings to the RichTextBox? Alternatively is there a better control to use?     - NumericUpDown ValueChanged not firing - scrollwheel+shift key pres Hello, really hope you guys can help. I'm using a standard NumericUpDown control on a form, and trying to change the increment depending if a Control.ModifierKeys is pressed when the mouse scrollwheel is moved. Default increment is 0.5 When Keys.Control is pressed and I roll the mousewheel, the increment is adjusted to 5 and the ValueChanged event firest. Great. But when Keys.Shift is pressed and I roll the mousewheel, the increment is adjust to 1 BUT ValueChanged does not fire, so the value in NumericUpDown doesn't get adjusted. Not so great. I'm really confused as to why Shift would not cause ValueChanged to fire.     - problem with excel hi, i'm facing a strange problem.. In my requirement , I'm suppose to load the data from datagrid into excel file. make the required changes in the file and load the file back into the datagrid. i'm able to export to excel but after i make changes in the excel and load it into grid, my changes are not visible..i'm getting null values.. i've datetime columns,decimal columns in my file...The values are visible in the file but when i load into grid..i'm seeing blanks spaces.. has anyone encountered such problem.?     - TabControl stealing focus I have some code in the form that processes a change event for a textbox. It modifies a property of an object which causes a separate visible TabControl to rebuild the tab pages. The tabcontol is calling rebuilding the tab page collection for the new object generated based on the property change. The problem is when I remove or clear the tabs my textbox loses focus and the TabControl gets focus. Is there anyway I can prevent this?     - DragDrop from one dataGridView to another (C#) Hello, I have a form with two similar DataGridViews. They have identical fields. I want to drag multiple selected rows from one to the other. I have spent the evening looking for sample code for this with no success in finding a complete sample. I have tried for hours to work together incomplete samples to make one work for me without success. Could someone direct me to a working sample or provide one for me? It is not important where in the second dgv that the new rows are placed. It will start empty and be used like a shopping cart.     - UserControls? I am a web developer by trade, but have done a little with winforms. How can I add a winforms user control to an application without having to create a separate project for each control? From what I have been reading, you need to create a project for the user control, build it, and then add it to the tool box. Once it is in the tool box you can drag it onto the form or other control.     - DataGridView & TabPages Hi, This is my first message to this group. I've already search the web, google, this group, found some clues to my problem but found no solution or workaround. So please let me explain my problem: I'm developing an application, which has custom UserControls containing DataGridView controls being put inside TabPages of a TabControl at runtime (I hope this made sense). Well, those are being added dinamically at runtime simply because VisualStudio keeps deleting my controls due to a bug in the designer. This is a issue, but the problem I'm facing now is other. Please check those images: http://www.comp.ufscar.br/~cesarsouza/archive/CSharp/bug/ The first image is of my application, windowed, in normal mode, with the DataGridView loaded. Then, the window is maximized in the second image, and you can notice the grid didn't resize itself. Now, the third image reveals that the 'gap' produced is indeed not being redraw at all. The DataGridView is anchored on the four directions inside the UserControl, which is set to DockStyles.Fill inside the tab page. An interesting thing is, everything happens normally _before_ the data has been loaded and the data is bound. The same occurs backwards, i.e. If I load the data when the window is maximized and then resize it, the DataGridView gets bigger than its container control and becomes corrupted. I'm pretty sure this is a bug in the framework (I'm using 2.0) dealing with DataGridViews being put inside TabPages. If someone has already face this problem, please let me know. If nothing else works, I would like to know how I could force a complete redraw, or a re-bind after I completed a resize move.     - Table Adapter parameters I was successfully calling a TableAdapter.Fill command in code which was tied to an SQL stored procedure. I changed the stored procedure to include two additional parameters and it stopped working in code. The stored procedure works when previewing it in the dataset designer. But the line of code comes up with an error stating 'Expression Expected' and the comma after the first parameter is underlined. Can't find the problem.     - Dynamic event handlers Hi, I am trying to dynamically generate a menu, based on entries on a text or xml file. The text file contains the "tree" after which the menu will need to be created. What I'm having difficulties with is deciding on how to handle the events for each of the menu items. I might be wrong here... 1. What's the best way to generate event handlers dynamically? I've read about runtime IL generation, which makes sense but is a bit complex. 2.     - managed Multimedia development I may be missing something, so I'm making this a general question. I need to do some multimedia work. Essentially display a movie image (or two in one windw) plus some text and overlay text. For the overlays to work I'll need to be able to identify the movie frame being shown (ideally via an event). I expect to use Windows Media Video 9 movies as a minimum, though Flash support would also be nice, and Quicktime support nicer still. The end devie will be semi-embedded, and run on XPe at least, though I'd love to be able to compile onto the .NET CF and run under CE6.0. I've been working with the Quartz library and a public domain managed code wrapper for that library. To the question - there must be a better way than this! Have I completely missed some .NET class? Yes, I've messed with the Media Player DLL but that just doesn't have the fine control of the Quartz functions .. but the Quartz functions are not managed and the process of calling it from a .NET environment is .. well .. kludgy.     - ComboBox binding trouble In a contacts app I have a company combobox setup like this: DataSource = ds.Company DisplayMember = "CompanyName" ValueMember = "CompanyID" The SelectedValue property is bound to the Contact table Company field. companyComboBox.DataBindings.Add( "SelectedValue", contactBindingSource, "Company"); The problem is the CompanyID is not being set in the Contact table's Company column.     - DNS-less Connection String Using VS2K5 Datasource Connection Wizard The quick question is: when creating an SQLdatasource using the wizard in VS2K5 which requires a new connection, does VS2K5 create a DNS-less connection or not? The long question is: I've been told that DNS connections strings (Datasource=DNSName) are old news and that I should be using a DNS-less connection string (like Datasource=ServerName); however, none of my connection strings created with the wizard work anymore now that I've deleted the DNS ODBC connection with the same name as the SQL Server.     - Copying data between two forms, allocated memory continues to grow Hi, I have a simple memory problem with two forms on a MDI project. The first form (MainForm) open a second one (ImageForm). Both the forms have an instance to a dataset (DataSet1). On the ImageForm Form_Load event, I wrote code to copy all the records from the MainForm.DataSet1.TB_Images dataTable to the ImageForm.DataSet1.TB_Images dataTable. Note that TB_Images has an Image Field. I can't understand why opening and closing ImageForm many times, the allocated memory continues to grow.     - DataGridView Column Resizing Just Quit On Me?? I have a DataGridView "grid" filling a splitter panel and have set: grid.AllowUserToResizeColumns = true; Until just recently the column resize worked perfectly when I drug a header column divider. Now, it has just stopped allowing me to grab the column divider? I can still reorder the columns by dragging them around ... so that feature is still working. The sorting by column feature works too. Any clues? How do you troubleshoot such a problem? I've been working on various other portions of the program ... but none of that work should impact the grid's settings.     - UserPaint problem with TextBox Hi, I am deriving my user control from TextBox . As I want to do some drawing within the textbox , I am doing the following :- 1) SetStyle(ControlStyles.UserPaint , true ); 2) Overriding OnPaint The drawing stuff works fine in OnPaint . The problem happens with the font ; Though I have set the font property to "Arial", 12 pt . the effect is not there when ==> SetStyle(ControlStyles.UserPaint , true ); I want to have the Arial font as well I need to do the drawing. Specify the 'ToolboxBitmap' attribute on the class.
