    - Creating a scrollable container control I would like to create a custom container control which can scroll its child controls. I know that the AutoScroll property of ScrollableControl can mimic this functionality, but AutoScroll causes some behavior which is EXTREMELY obnoxious to my users, and I haven't been able to find a workaround. Consequently, I would like to be able to scroll a control without using the AutoScroll property. Is there any way to accomplish this? I've created the appropriate scrollbars, and now I just need to get the child controls to move.     - InvalidCastException: (DataSet) DataGrid.DataSource I need some help please. Say you have a DataGrid and a DataSet, and you create a dataview to handle sorting and filtering and then you assign the dataview to DataGrid.DataSource. Once you did that you will get InvalidCastException if you do this: DataSet dataSet = (DataSet) dataGrid.DataSource; But I need to do that because I need to get the DataGrid's dataentries in a dataset and use XmlDataDocument to load the dataset and then write it to an xml file.     - Changing grid cells programatically I have a DataGrid and I'm changing the value in one of the cells programatically. Problem is, my change isn't being picked up (and saved in the underlying data source), unless I manually tab off the cell in the grid.     - TLSStream object problem I have an application that needs to send a HttpWebRequest to a secure server via https on a non-standard SSL port, I need to use port 5004. The error I get an the stack is shown below. The code works fine using the standard SSL port, but fails using port 5004, not a firewall issue.     - DataGrid: Custom ComboBox column problem Hay there, I'm writing my own DataGridComboBoxColumn because .NET 1.1 does not have one (I hope .NET 2.0 supplies one). I based it on this article: http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/03/08/DataGrids/default.aspx I have a problem when there are two DataGrid's on one form, and when I switch focus from one grid to the other. To be more precise, when I'm editing a combo box column in one grid, and then click in the combo column of another grid an exception is thrown stating "The ListManager's position must be equal to rowNum. Parameter name: rowNum". I will post the code if anyone feels like digging into it. Anyway, perhaps someone has a better link with a how-to?     - Want to check condition before switching between child forms In My MDI Application (One Mdi Parent and around 50 mdi child forms). On each child form is a database driven form, it means user can add,update etc. record in the database. i want to check certain condition before switching between mdi child forms, if condition is true then user should be allowed to move another mdi child form otherwise not. Steps to duplicate. 1. Open first child form1 2. Open second child form2 3. Press add child form2 4. now user tries to move on form1, and i want to validate (if operation is complete : Want to complete) if yes then focus should not be moved to form1 else it should be move to form1 I was able to acheive this in vb6 but not in vb.net , can you please suggest which event should i use? i tried with leave,enter and validating but could succeed.     - changing a data type for a field on a report, using VS 2K3 and CR Hello, I have an app that uses Crystal Reports for .Net. I needed to change a data type of a field in the database and on the report. I thought it would work fine, however now the field is always blank on the report. The field is actually a fomula field based on a Date/Time datatype. I am assuming that because the field is no longer a Date/Time datatype in the database that this showing up blank. Does anyone know how to reslove this type of issue? Also does anyone know of any good books/reference material for using Crystal Reports bundled within .Net?     - Interactive tooltips I want to extend the tooltip control to handle interactions with the user via clickable links within the text.     - The object is currently in use elsewhere I have a splash screen that is displayed as the application starts. The splash screen has text dynamically added to it to indicate the authorisation mechanism and start-up progress. Due to the nature of the splash screen graphic we have to draw the text onto the splash screen instead of assigning text directly to each labels text property. When I minimize the form, the form minimize, but there is a symbol on the windows desktop for the minimized form. This symbol is the same as for child windows which are minimized to its mdi-form.     - How to give initial focus? Hi, I've programmed a simple form having some panes and one button. There is a basic thing I can't find a solution for: 1) I gave the button a TabIndex of 0. The main pane has a TabIndex of 1. Still the button doesn't get the focus when the form opens. Why? I tried to give focus to the button at Form_Load(), but CanFocus is false at that time.     - How to set Form.Height > screen height? I have a irregular form having height > 600 pixel which can be moved when any part of it is clicked and dragged. Under resolution 800 x 600, the form will appear "truncated" when i move it upward... Later I found that the Height property will be automatically set to a number slightly larger than screen height (probably screen height + title height, sth like that) whenever a set a large value to it.     - Need good design for startup project I'm building a winforms app using vb.net 1.1 and have 3 basic tiers on the client side. the UI, BLL and DAL. Currently everything is in one project and at some point I'll parse it out to a separate project for each Tier. Currently the startup object is Sub Main in the form called frmMain. frmMain is open through the life of the application session. What happens is from Sub Main it runs this code to get things started correctly: Shared Sub Main() Try System.Windows.Forms.Application.EnableVisualStyles() System.Windows.Forms.Application.DoEvents() System.Windows.Forms.Application.Run(New frmMain) Catch ex As Exception ErrLog(ex) End Try End Sub Then the Load event opens the login form before frmMain has a chance to be visible. If the login succeeds, then frmMain continues to open. If the login is canceled, then frmMain exits and the application quits. ============================ What I want to do is parse the login form into a new project and make that the startup project. Then as the user logs in it can check for updates and more easily replace any of the other DLLs (UI, BLL or DAL) with out having to replace its self (if I left the login form as part of the UI exe then I think it would be more difficult to upgrade the UI exe as it would have to replace itself.). I know there are new things coming available like no touch deployment, but I'm thinking that this design will still make things easier down the road when I use a better technology for automatic updates. So my question is: Can anyone give some advise on this strategy and; if frmMain is in the UI dll rather than being in the startup project, how can I make the login form go away and have frmMain persist as the main form through out the application session?     - Simple question: Updating a datasource This might be a simple question, but I havent found a solution anywhere: I do some stuff, and fill a DataSet from a database. After the tables have been processed (rows inserted/deleted/updated) I want to write the DataSet back to the database. My DataTable shall replace the table in the database. Consider the original DataAdapter disposed. My current workaround is to create a new DataAdapter and new DataSet, fill the new DataSet as I did from the start, replace ALL table rows with the rows from the first table, and finally call the Update() method to write back the changes. This strikes me as not the proper way to do things. I don't see the point in retrieving all rows from the database if all I want to do is overwrite the table. Can't I create a new DataAdapter and simply tell it to update the target table with my DataTable? Secondly, how do I insert a single row into the target Table?     - Windows Forms Panel Hi! We're developing a Windows Application kind of project under the Visual Studio .NET 2003 platform. This application has 3 main parts: - Element explorer developed with TreeView - Group of elements that show certain data - Document Viewer In the previous sections we show data from a codified XML file. This XML file is compound by static data and a group of MHT documents Base64 codified. These MHT documents are the documents viewed in the "Viewing" Section. It is in this section where we find the problem we want to ask about. In order to view this MHT document, we first transform them into HTML text, this HTML text is the one that's going to be viewed in the section. This section is formed with these elements: - Main Panel - Title Label - Controls Container Panel: in this panel the controls are added depending on the elements number in the XML file. - To show the title we use the Control Label - To show the MHT content(converted to MHT) the Activex AxDHTMLEDLib.AxDHTMLEdit is used. As we go through the data in the XML file we add the controls we just described, and also we have in mind the positions of the controls we added before, for example: Label1 X=0 Y=0 Height=30 Label2 X=0 Y=35 Height=30 Label3 X=0 Y=70 Height=30 DHTMLEdit1 X=0 Y=105 Height=60 The problem arises when we include a DTHMLEdit control. The problem is the DHTMLEdit added element does not respect the coordinates established in the code, appearing at any place in the containing panel. In the "Elements Explorer with TreeView" section there's a button placed half the way of the dark bar that collapse that section. The moment we collapse that section, the bad placed control, is placed in the right place and it gets correctly the coordinates we established previously. The error happens again when: - We start the application - We right click over the tree second node and we select "copy" - We right click over the tree first node, we select "paste all". The moment when it add the elements to the viewer, all the elements are out of place. - We right click over tany tree node save the first one, we select "add...". When the empty element is added to the Containing Panel and realocate all the elements in the Panel with valid coordinates, the Panel doesn't respect these coordinates and place the element in a non valid place. Same way when DHTMLEdit controls are wrongly placed, if we click on the arrow image in the scroll bar, those controls get placed correctly in the indicated places. For example, with the labels that are also included in the container panel, this problem doesn't appear, getting all of them rightly placed in their position.     - Installing dll in the Global Assembly Cache Hello, I would like to do the following: Place my own DLL file on a server, install it in the GAC of some cliënt computers and use the DLL file in a VB.NET program that is also located on the cliënt computers. When I make a small change to the dll on the server, every cliënt program should use this updated dll directly, without having to rebuild and redistribute the program. I was told that this could be done my placing the dll on a server and install it in the GAC of each cliënt. I have created a strong name for the dll and I use a fixed versionnumber for it. I have installed the dll in the GAC, but when I make a change to the dll, the executable program still shows results from the 'old' dll. Does anyone know what to do about this, so my program automatically uses the new version from the dll?     - problems with restoring minimized MDI child form Hi Everybody, I've got a strange problem: While searching the newsgroups for something else, I've come across a post that discusses a bug with restoring MDI child forms. (for any body who is interested, the post is in microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.windowsforms by Scott Abel, the title is 'Form Message Question', from 2003-08-12 09:43:42 PST ) Briefly, the problem is that if you use Form.WindowStyle to restore a minimized MDI child that was maximized when it was minimized, the form will be restored as maximized (as it should) but then when you click on the restore button of the from it will be restored to the minimized size. That post also included a workaround for this bug (to use SendMessage to send a SC_RESTORE message to the form instead of using Form.WindowState). I have implemented this in my application. However, I've run into a strange problem: I have several child forms in my application. Some are opened using a menu, and some have buttons in a toolbar to open them. For some reason, this work around works when the code is called from a menu, but does NOT work when the code is called from the event handler of a button in the toolbar. I even created a menu item that calls the event handler of the toolbar button. When clicking on the menu item the form is restored, when clicking on the button it is NOT restored. Later on, I will try to reproduce this in a small application and will post the code. If anybody have any ideas why this happens or how to fix it, please let me know. The problem is when the user selects a value from the combo , when the user clicks the combo in another row i need to remove the previously selected value from the combo list. So the user has only the left available values to be selected.     - simplest way to use scrollbars without Autoscroll? Hi, I would like to use Form's AutoScroll property, but only partially. Everything is ok except scrolling when ActiveControl changes (the first part of "AutoScroll"). For example my code calls someControl.Focus() which results in scrolling even if the someControl is partially visible. Tab key and mouse click behave in the same way :( Is it possible to disable that part of autoscrolling features and still use built-in scrollbars? Maybe some WndProc() trick?     - Binding on non-default property sets datarowstate modified Hi, I've got the following problem with databinding: If I bind a column of a dataset e.g. on the Text property of a Textbox, everything acts as expected, i.e. if you don't make any changes to the text in the textbox, the rowstate of the bound row stays unchanged. On the contrary, when you bind e.g. the Tag property of the Textbox, instead of the text property, the rowstate turns to modified when leaving the textbox (or by calling the bindingmanager.endcurrentedit method), even if you haven't changed a thing. This is very inconveniant because it causes unnecessary updates of the database. It seems that binding on the non default property (Text) causes changes of the underlying dataset. You can find the test cde below (button1_click fills a datasource where the control is bound to; acceptchanges ensures that the rowstate is modified) The button2_click writes out the rowstate before and after the endcureentedit call of the bindingmanager.     - icons on XP and W2k I have a .NET application which is targeted at both W2k and XP. My form's icons are XP style icons 32-bit. When it is running on W2k, the icons do not look correct. I understand that W2k does not support 32-bit icons with 8-bit alpha channels. My question is what can I do so that when my app is running on XP - it will display the XP icon and when it is running on W2k - it will display a 256-colored icon? Would I have to resort to detecting through code if I am running in W2k and then switch the icon property through code? Or is there a better way?     - Collection properties in User Controls I'm trying to create a user control that would have a ListDictionary property. When trying to use the property and set values for this collection, the dialog box that appears has everything disabled. I'm unsure of what I have to have set in code in order to enable this.
