    - Handling the Windows "No Disk" MessageBox I have a Windows application that reads images from a CD or DVD. If the media is removed from the drive and the user selected an image to in the DataGrid, then Windows will display a MessageBox informing the user that no media exists. This MessageBox also prompts the user to Cancel, Retry, or Continue. I don't know anything about this MessageBox except that my application crashes a horrible death if the user selects Cancel or Continue. I would like to be able to handle a Cancel selection if possible. Does anyone know what this MessageBox is that Windows (XP) displays automatically? If so, do you know how to read the DialogResult from it? The crash comes when my application proceeds with trying a call that will absolutely NOT work without the media.     - Transparent label flicker when drawn on form I am having troubles with forms that have a large number of labels with transparent backgrounds causing a good deal of flicker while originally drawing the form. I have created a new label class which inherits from Label and has UserPaint and DoubleBuffer set in the control styles, and this makes no difference. In 2.0, I set double buffering on the form and this also made no difference. Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this? A form with 100 transparent background labels should not flicker the way it does on my PC (Athlon 64 3500, 512MB) - you can see each label being drawn individually.     - RadioCheck Menu options Hi, I have an application (written in c#) where I am using a context menu for some custom objects on the screen. The context menu has a sub-menu which consists of 4 options, on which I have set the RadioCheck option to true, as I want these items to function as a group of radio buttons. Since I couldn't find any option to set which group each of the items was in I assumed it would work as it is. However, when I test it, selected an item on the menu does not de-select the one that is currently selected. Surely I don't have to do that myself do I? Have I missed something?     - Question about Form appearance... Ok, I know this is a silly question, but why don't form created by VS .NET (2003) look the same as form in other MS apps like IE and Office?     - Another CreateObject C# question My question is how can I in C# call methods on a COM object without having an interface or a RCW referenced. I have a COM component that I cannot import into .NET, it throws a bunch of errors. In VB.NET I was able to do the following: Dim instance As Object impromtuApplication = CreateObject("Impromptu.Application") impromtuApplication.DoSomething("Paramters") In C# I have somewhat the equivelant code: string progId = "CognosImpromptu.Application"; Type comType = Type.GetTypeFromProgID(progId, true); appInstance = Activator.CreateInstance(comType); appInstance.DoSomething("Paramters"); // this line fails because it says no method like this exists So I know I have to cast this object to an Interface or COM object, is there anyway to do this WITHOUT having the RCW or Interface.     - MSVS Forms Design View Problems Hi I am getting some unusual problems with Visual Studio design view and I assume that as an inexperienced user I am doing something wrong: 1) tabPage control page order randomises after edit -- no matter how hard I try to get the page order I want it keeps jumping back to a random order. This seems to occur only after a reasonable number of pages and added controls on each page but I have done quite complex tabPages without any problems also. 2) intermittent deletion of custom user controls from the main form after edit (usually graphical edit in the surrounding area of the user control -- even simple things like nudging adjacent standard controls for better alignment can have this effect). The worst part is Designer does this without warning and sometimes the code will build but throw an exception on run. 3) Design view lock up - on certain windows forms apps Ive attempted the design view locks for up to 60 seconds on opening the solution in VS with the form in design view or after edit + change to selected viewed document. I would be grateful of any suggestion for any of the above -- Im pretty sure Im not editing any Designer generated areas of Form1.h, however there may be other stupid little things that Im doing wrong.     - Large treeview scrolling I have a large treeview with more than 100,000 items.     - textBox as a scrolling trace buffer Hi I would like a text output control (such as textBox) to have a fixed number of lines and operate in a similar manner to the old DOS console i.e. text lines added to the bottom, previous lines shift up and when the area is full the topmost lines that get shifted up are discarded. Basically Im looking for a non-persistant trace buffer on an ASCII data stream so that the text can be viewed in real-time but without a permanent history building up.     - Workaround for TextBox AppendText 32767 character limit Hi Ive seen plenty discussion about the textBox AppendText signed 16-bit character limit and I presume that it has not been fixed as I am getting it in a noddy project I am working at the moment.     - Move a form while shown Hi, I'm trying to move a form while shown changing it's location or top,left properties without results. I'm doing a simple loop like this (VB): Dim r as integer dim frm as new Form1 frm.top=600 frm.left=100 frm.show() for r= 600 to 0 step -1 frm.top=r application.DoEvents() Next This code executes from a button in other form and don't works. I have tried insertting a delay inside the loop without success. Sometimes I get strange behavior, like the form doing partially a movement, then dissapearing... How should I do this? TIA Pucara. By happy coincidence, the topic coincided with some work I was doing, so I was able to spend some time looking at the problem. At Ron Jeffries' request, I thought I'd write a little 'thing' showing how this might work in practice. For this little example, we're going to write an application whose main form displays some text in a font the user specifies. Just to make sure we're close enough to the original post, we'll have a button that when clicked, launches a font selection dialogue. Naturally we'll proceed test first. House keeping: I'm writing this using VS2005, C#, NUnit and a modified version of NMock, the modifications to which I'll include in the source code to this example. I'm not going to test drive the initial layout of the form as it's just not interesting from the perspective of this example. Straight away we're into murky water. Showing a dialogue during a test is not generally considered a helpful thing. We need some way to prompt the user for some information, and we also need a way to test. What areas do we need to test? 1.. When the button is clicked, some action is taken by the form to solicit the user input. 2.. A font selection dialogue is displayed. 3.. If the user accepts the change to the font, the change is applied to the label. 4.. If the user rejects the change to the font, no change is applied to the label. This is where the User Interrogator steps in to lend a hand. We will separate the notion of requesting information from the user, and the UI mechanisms used to achieve this goal. All we're interested in at this stage is showing that when the button is clicked, the form calls the GetFontFromUser method on the interrogator object. We'll add a new test to ensure that the form uses the returned Font correctly. OK, but we've got some duplication here between the tests. Our new test method is implicitly doing the job of the first test, so let's remove the first test. The next step is to provide a real implementation of IUserInterrogator for the form to use. We've already tested the interaction between the interrogator and the form by using a mock, so when we've TDD'd our concrete interrogator, it should just plug straight in. Earlier on, we swam out of murky water by delegating the displaying of the font selection dialogue to the interrogator. It's finally caught up with us, so what are we going to do? Let's write a test. Looking at the implementation has also brought to my attention the need for the current font to be sent to the GetFontFromUser method, so lets make the necessary changes now. In the event of the user clicking on 'Cancel' on the font selection dialogue, we'd like our ShowAndReturn method to return null and we want our GetFontFromUser method to return the initial font. We need to specify a couple of pieces of behaviour; firstly, that the ShowAndReturn method calls ShowDialogue on the font selection dialogue passing in the parent form as an argument. Secondly, that if the user clicks OK, the method returns the currently selected font, otherwise it returns null. In order to do this, we're going to need one of our mods to NMock, namely MarshalByRefMock. This is similar to the DynamicMock class with 2 differences, it can mock only those object which derive from MarshalByRefObject, but can mock all methods, including non-virtual ones. This makes it ideal for mocking Controls and Forms. First, we'll specify the behaviour in the event the user clicks cancel. Whenever a UI has to respond to an event, and query the user for some interaction, the way to test drive this is by separating the 3 concerns: 1.. Responding to the event and conceptually asking the user for input. 2.. Creating the UI elements to present to the user. 3.. Displaying the UI elements. Hopefully, this strategy should help in the noble pursuit of TFUI. Usually, descriptions of test driven user interfaces suggest a thin layer of untestable GUI code at the top.     - ClickOnce + extra ConfigFile? I developed a WindowsForms application that i want to distribute with ClickOnce. I usually develop my applications with a three-layer structure: Presentation, BusinessLogic, DataAccess. So far I have always put them in seperate projects. In VisualStudio2005 I found out that I can have a config-file in the BusinessLayer and reach it with typed properties through the My.Settings object. This is really nice since most config values are used in the Business layer! The problem arises when I want to use the inbuilt ClickOnce publishing wizard. It will not include the config file of the Business project. If I copy the config file manually and rename it, then everything works fine, so distribution is the missing part here. So what do you recommend: 1) Is there a way to force the wizard to include a specific file in the manifest? 2) Should I use MageUI.exe to create manual manifests? I really want to avoid this since it is seems quite complicated. 3) I tried to reach the My.Settings of the Presentation layer from the Business layer, but only succeeded to retrieve it with GetRawXML which gets quite complicated and untyped. Is there a better way that you know? 4) Should I skip the My.Settings typed properties and go for the old style appSettings which means BusinessLayer can reach values in the Presentation config? 5) Should I avoid the whole problem by populating a BusinessLayer Settings object from the Presentation layer on application start? 6) Should I restructure my code and put all classes in the same project, only separating them with namespaces and seperate folders? I am not sure why I have to create a DLL-Library for my base Form in VS2005, but this is what I did.     - Transforming Controls? Hi, I'm trying to draw a standard windows forms control onto a form with a transformation. Before drawing the control I'm applying a world transformation to the graphics object, but the results seem to be unpredictable. Depending on the control my transformation seems to be applied incompletely. For example, buttons are translated as I'd expect but not scaled or rotated.     - Keeping a form on top of its application I'm trying to keep a form on top of all other windows in its own application, but not on top of all windows in all applications. I can get it to be on top of all applications by setting "TopMost = true", but can't get it to only be on top of its own application (i.e. when I select another application the form I've made TopMost is still on top of everything). I've tried setting the MdiParent to be the application, but then the "TopMost" property seems to have no effect (the code I was using for this is shown below).     - Hosted Winforms control in Internet Explorer Hi All, I've got a WinForms control that I host in IE to allow certain people to upload a directory structure to my Intranet. The control is signed, strongly named and the web site it's running from is Trusted and Trusted sites have been given full permissions in the .Net configuration tool. It works perfectly if I only have Framework 1.1 installed, as soon as I install 2.0 - it stops working entirely, the placeholder on the page never disappears.     - Text looks bold when i manually double buffer to a bitmap Hi Thanks for taking the time to read this post and offering any suggestions/advice. I have an owner drawn control that uses the standard setstyle method to double buffer my painting. Everything works fine and looks as intended. I am now in the process of expanded my rendering class to support internal scrollable sections. I decided to do this by creating a wrapper class to handle the painting. The wrapper class creates a new bitmap and passes the graphics object from it to the original paint event of the renderer. It then works out what section of the paint needs to be blitted onto the real canvas and does so using the drawimage method. It all works great apart from any text that is rendered to the new bitmap looks really bad. It almost looks like it is bold but it is also nowhere near as smooth as a bold font would be. I believe I have ruled this down to the new bitmap being created with a transparent background using black pixels. If I change the background to white using the setpixel method and make it transparent using this colour (a straight fillrectangle and anything other than white does not work) then everything looks like it should. Obviously this is a very slow method and totally unacceptable in the final product. Can anyone shed any light on the standard practice used to eliminate such problems?     - Smart Client - always slow Hello, I'm facing a problem with the smart client technology. We have a smaller application (around 5mb) which we want to deploy with smart client technology. This works but the problem is, the exe and dll are downloaded each time the applicaiton is started. It's logical that the very first time the whole stuff has to be downloaded. But without any assembly change, the exe and dll are downloaed every time the applicaiton starts.     - Adding a common componet to multiple pages... Hi, I have a common control that I want to add to two tab control pages. When I do this it only shows up on one tab page (ie. the last page it was added to). I've noticed in the C# code that the control count for the page is correct when added to the first tab page, however when I add it to the second tab page, the control count is decremented, which is why I am not seeing my common control on both pages.     - Exception Running App under NTD I have a .NET 1.1 Winforms application I am running via no touch deployment (HTTP link from web app). On some workstations we get the following error at launch: "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled." I have already increased Intranet trust to Full, and even signed the assembly and granted it Full trust as well (via .NET wizards). The app does work if the currently logged in user is given admin privileges on the domain, so this issue seems to be permissions related.     - Alpha blended, Double buffered non-client areas. How? Please help! Hi, I am deriving from Panel and I paint the client and non-client area of the panel myself. I am drawing a bitmap in both the client and non-client area. The bitmap has an alpha channel so the edges are neatly anti-aliased. I am using the WM_NC* messages to distinquish between the client and non-client area. I set the ControlStyles to both OptimizedDoubleBuffered and SupportTransparentBackColor and set the BackColor to a transparent color. All of this works fine, except for the fact that the non-client area does not use double buffering or transparency. It seems that the control styles are used for the client area only? I have read Bob Powell's faq on Windows Forms and he also has a section on transparent forms. However, if you set the WS_EX_TRANSPARENT style, you will never be able to use double buffering, since Bob's technique will invalidate the parent's window, causing flickering. Microsoft's approach for copying the parent's background into an offscreen surface, and then copying your own graphics over it sounds like the only possible way to deal with double buffered transparent controls. The frustrating thing is that .NET has everything in place with the background painting. I've checked reflector and OnPaintBackground indeed paints a piece of the parent control into the graphics object, when SupportTransparentBackColor is set and the backcolor alpha is not opaque. Great, but it seems that OnPaintBackground only paints the client area and not the non-client area... Did I miss something? Bottom line is: does anybody know how to handle double buffered, transparent, alpha blended non-client area's? I'm counting on you, Bob :). Hi All,

I am using VS 2005 and would like to accomplish the following:

Assuming I have 3-4 grids on a given Windows Form. I would like to
update these grids individually on a specified timer interval without
blocking the UI thread. When the info is available for a specific grid, it
is updated with the latest values from the SQL Server 2000 database backend.

What would be the best way to do this? I think I'd need to start a new
thread for each grid's Update/Refresh method or maybe even use the new
BackgroundThreadWorker object. Any ideas, hints, code tips (VB.NET).
