    - Transparent labels Hi, I have a control of type Panel which hosts other controls of type Label. The user can click on a label and drag it around. It may happen that when a label is dragged it overlaps another label. I want the label on the top to be transparent so I can see the label underneath.     - Detecting which key has been pressed Hi all, I"m making a small WinForm application in VB.NET. It has 2 textboxes on the form which can only contain numbers > 0. On the right of each textbox there are 2 buttons which when pressed increment or decrement the values in the textboxes. To make the program more user-friendly I want them to be able to press a key on the keyboard which in turn will increment or decrement a value. For example, if they press "a" then TextBoxA will increment, if they press "A" then TextBoxA will decrement.     - Drag N Drop from managed -> unmanaged & vice versa Our product has implementation both in managed & unmanaged code. So also, user interface dialogs are both in managed & unmanaged. Currently, I'm working to support drag & drop across the interop boundaries & am running into some problems with custom data formats. So far, I've discovered that if I create a DataObject in managed code for my custom data format, then on the unmanaged side, I get the DataObject as a COM object. What is the way to extract the actual data from this COM object? I've tried various ways to decipher the COM object, including defining my own unmanaged COM DataObject & calling Marshal.GetObjectForIUnknown to wrap the unmanaged COM object, but so far I haven't been able to figure out the proper way to extract my data correctly on the unmanaged end. I suspect I will run into a similar situation when trying to drag & drop from an unmanaged dialog to a managed dialog. I will appreciate any pointers to resolving this problem. Isn't the registry still better suited to store app data? my favorite usage pattern are [TAPI based] CTI apps: - there is a country specific part (numbering scheme) - there is a location specific part (hardware device settings like dial tone, getting an outside line...) typically defined by the office's PBX - there is a hardware/PC specific part (the ports connecting the CTI hardware, headset connection), defined by the PC on the desk - there is a provider specific setting like billing data cost computation - there is something personal to the user (my favorite numbers, speed dials, histories) - employees share multiple desks (it's a n:m relation) how does a .NET app config file looks like that handles all those parts automatically as far as possible? so all I want is: I log in and tell the app where I am n(or my phone does this), the app then loads everything automatically. thanks herbert Tag: Custom Control Tag: 85253

    - window border disappears Hi, Sometimes when my app goes from maximized to normal via the provided button in the upper right hand corner next to the close button, the window border disappears.     - menu event questions Hi, I have two questions concerning menu events: 1) I want to share the same handler between three menu items. Can I send menu event with a parameter so that the handler would know who sent it? 2) How can I raise a menu event in my C# code?     - Creating a long string This should be so easy it's embarassing, but I've looked & looked on the inet... What's the equivalent in VB .NET of the old Basic String$() function? To create string of 1000 zeros, you'd do a$=string$(1000,0) which you don't seem to be able to do in VB .NET. I thought Dim s As String = Microsoft.VisualBasic.string(1000,0) but it doesn't like it.     - Intercept Shift+Tab in Datagrid By overriding the InputKeys and KeyDown methods on the datagrid, I can intercept the Tab. However, this is not the case with the Shift+Tab. What I need to do for this particular datagrid/app is to disable the ability of the user to tab through each cell in the datagrid. Basically, when the datagrid or a cell gets focus and the Tab key is pressed, the focus should go to the next control on the form, instead of to each individual cell. I've got that part working, but when a cell gets focus and Shift+Tab is pressed, I haven't been able to intercept it. I've tried the InputKeys/KeyDown as I mentioned above and have also tried overriding the ProcessCmdKey method but no luck. I was thinking about overriding WndProc but was told that the Shift+Tab happens even before that so haven't tried it as of yet. Anyone done this before?     - app.config Updates With No-Touch I'm deploying a windows form application using no-touch deployment and Rockford Lhotka's NetRun app. The first time I run the app everything is fine, the config file downloads to the client. But, if I edit the .config file on the IIS server (running MS Server 2003, .Net Fw 2.0), the client doesn't download the new version the next time I run the app. I checked the output of fuslogvw and it says the config file is from the user's temp internet file directory.     - Refresh on form startup My form startup implements some logic that takes a little while, but my form isn't showing fully until it has all finished.     - Starting out Hi, I've just started using Windows Forms, .NET and C#. I have Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition and I am looking to develop an application to consume the Amazon SOAP web service (fetching product information based on ISBN etc). Visual Studio creates form and program C# files and everything appears quite straightforward in creating a user interface (drag and drop etc). However I'm unsure how to structure my application. Does the form C# (Form.cs) represent a single form or should it represent the entire UI? I would like to use multiple forms and pop-up dialog boxes. Also, I guess the program C# (Program.cs) class should be used to implement the business logic (e.g. web service access etc) and reference the UI class (Form.cs)?     - RichTextBox printing problem Hi I have post this question all over the net but no one seems to be able to help me with this issue. Please help me, it urgent that I finish this printout but this problem is just driving me crazy? Im currently using the FormatRange function to print out RichTextBox contents. My problem is when I have finished printing out the text of the control I want to get the Y-pos on the printing area where the last char was printed out. I need that pos to put more text on the printing area, not by adding more text to the richtextbox that Im printing out. I just want to write more text on the printing canvas.     - Serializing System.Windows.Forms I am working on a form designer. I have defined my own controls to list into a IToolBoxService, and the PropertyGrid, but I am having a difficult time Serializing a Windows Form to XML. Bascially, I want to take the form & Properties, and Controls within the form & Properties and place them into an XML file for later use. The ResXResourceWriter is fairly straight forward to use, but as a resx files, it doesn't store all of the property information about the form.     - Missing the 'Expandable' TreeNode property The MSDN has an article titled: "HOW TO: Dynamically Add Nodes to a TreeView WebBrowser Control by Using Visual C# .NET". The article exploits a property of the TreeNode control called 'Expandable'. However, the property is available only for the Web Controls, and to my surprise I couldn't find it among the TreeNode Windows Forms properties. This Expandable property is crucial if you want to develop a smart, dynamic tree view which doesn't load all the data at once, but does it automatically as the user requests to expand the node. This is especially important if you want to bind the tree view to a database which can contain thousands of rows and you don't want to load all the nodes if the user doesn't even request it. Without the Expandable property the node doesn't have the ability to expand if you don't feed the sub-nodes during the tree creation. In other words the node doesn't have the 'plus' box to trigger the 'Expand' request. If the subnodes are supposed to be provided only on the expand request, then you are stuck.     - DrawImage I don't know whether this item should go here but I can't find out where it should go. I have a custom control that draws icons at various locations on the form. When I use an 8 bit icon then I'm ok but when I use a 32bit Icon with Alpha blending then it seems ok until I do something else then when GDI tries to draw the image it throws a NullReferenceException. The code is a bit complicated to put here but the painting part seems relativly straight forward. If anyone has had something similar then I'm willing to try anything to get it working correctly, only it looks rubbish with the 8 bit Icons a great with the 32-bit ones.     - pointers on creating app like Computer Management Hi, I would like to create an app that has the same layout as Windows Computer Management where clicking on a treeview item (in left pane) loads a different panel/control in the right pane.     - Get caret pos in TextBox The documentation states that you can use the SelectionStart property of the TextBox to get the position of the caret in the TextBox. Well, what if the selection is BEFORE the caret? Say you have the word â??TEXTâ?? and you want to select â??EXâ??. There are 2 ways you can do this. You can click before the E and drag to the X so the caret is now sitting after the X. You can click after the X and drag to the E so the caret is now sitting before the E. In both cases the SelectionStart property has the value of 1 and the SelectionLength has a value of 2, yet the caret is in two different places. Using the SelectionStart property alone canâ??t always give you the correct caret position. How can one get the true caret position and be absolutely sure itâ??s correct?     - Problem using a UserControl in a DataGrid Hi In my Windows Form application I created a File Browser control that was derived from System.Windows.Forms.UserControl. It contains a single line text box and a button. The user can enter a filename in the text box or hit the browse button which pops up the File Open Dialog box and lets the user select a file. The subsequent selection is placed in the text box. This control is placed in a DataGrid using a column derived from DataGridColumnStyle. Everything works great except when Iâ??m entering text in the text box of my File Browser control, hitting Left, Right, Home, or End moves the current cell in the DataGrid instead of moving the caret in the text box. Iâ??ve found that if I derive a class from TextBox and use that in my UserControl instead of using the stock TextBox, override the ProcessCmdKey() method, and move the caret myself, I can get this to work correctly. This seems really sloppy though. I donâ??t know why the TextBox is not using and keeping the keys instead of ignoring them and letting the messages bubble up to the grid control.     - MouseDown, MouseUp Hi, I have trouble understanding why this fails but here is what I'm trying to do: I have 1 form with 2 controls in it. I created a MouseDown handler for both controls (setting up different internal things each) and 1 MouseUp handler for the form since both controls can use the same code. Now, what I was excepting was: - The 2 controls would catch and call their MouseDown handlers: that works. - And as none of the controls have no MouseUp handler the message would be propagated to the parent form where the form MouseUp handler would be called: that doesn't work.     - how to change printer settings Hi All, Does someone knows how to manage printer settings programmatically? System.Drawing.Printing.PrinterSettings class allows to change them for a custom document but I need to do it not for one document but for an installed printer in general, the same way I can do it manually by opening Printers folder on my local computer, selecting printer and changing it's settings. When I do it manually there is no difference if a printer is local or network one. Is there a convenient way to do it via .NET?     - Should I store Graphics object ? hi, We are currently porting our project from VB6 to VB .NET. Earlier we used to make scale transformations on objects like pictureBox , forms etc.Now Such transformations are made on the graphics object of the form/pictureBox. Should It be better if make a graphics object from my pictureBox in load event handler of the form and store it as member variable of the form , make transformations as and when required(we really require such transformations from mils to pixels.).     - MDI child problem (switching between MDI children) Hi, I have an MDI container with several MDIchildren. When more than 1 childform is opened i get a problem when clicking another form to get to it (take it to foreground). It only works when a control is clicked in the other form, otherwise, the first form just stays in the forground and the other form doesn't get selected. I hope this is kind of clear.     - Label controls inside rich textbox Hi all, i have a situation to place label controls inside rich textbox control and i have done that using richTextbox1.controls.add method. But the problem is the controls are not part of the text which i type it is overlapping my text.In simple words, Is it possible to make a label control work just like a text inside the rich textbox. The window is being shown by "name.Show();". As the window is being opened, it is being closed immediately.     - Items in Combo Box list are not visible I am using Visual Basic .Net with Windows XP Professional. I have added a Combo Box to my form and changed the drop-down style to DropDownList.     - Embedded form and Anchor property The following situation: Panel control with Dock=Fill, inside a panel an embedded form with controls in it. The code embedding the form into the panel is this: pnl.Controls.Add(form1); Everything is working perfect, except the Anchor property of controls on the embedded form is not working. The form has a grid that should be anchored to all four sides, however, because the form is embedded into the panel, this whole design is not working. Am I missing anything? Any workaround?     - Bug in DataGrid.CommitEdit (.Net v1.1) After many hours of debugging, I've finally come to the conclusion that there is a bug in DataGrid's CommitEdit. I have the following situation: I've a custom DataGridColumnStyle (for a ComboBox, who hasn't done one of these?). If no selection is made (e.g. SelectedIndex == -1), I want to abort the commit. Problem is, when my DataGridColumnStyle.Commit override is called and returns false, DataGrid.CommitEdit causes a NullReferenceException to be thrown. Turns out that the first if statement evaluates to false. On the second if statement (if (this.editColumn.ReadOnly ...), DataGrid.editColumn is null, hence the exception. Oddly enough, if I cancel editting by clicking a control outside of the data grid (e.g. not causing another cell to gain focus), no error occurs until the data grid once again has a cell gain focus.     - Cannot set form background image I recently started using VisualStudio.Net for the first time. I started a project and created some forms to gain an understanding of how to use C#, Visual Studio, and the .Net framework. One of the first things I did was to create a non-standard window with rounded corners and set the background image of the form. I set the background image by simply opening the form properties and clicking the "..." button next to the BackgroundImage property and selected an image to use as the background, in this case it was a JPG, and all was fine. I could see the background image in Visual Studio and when I ran my application. Sometime later I created a new project and started developing a small and real application. I decided to add a splash screen. I wanted to use a bitmap I created as the backgroud of the splash screen. As before I opened the form properties and clicked the "..." button next the BackgroundImage property and selected the bitmap only to receive an error "Empty path name is not legal". I tried selecting several different images with the same result. I then copied images to c:\ and tried selecting from there with the same result. I thought I must have been doing something differently then I had done with the first project in which I sucessfully set the background image. I tried setting the background image in the first project, thining it would work, but it did not. I got the same error. So I closed everything down and rebooted, thinking this might help, but it did not help. What the heck is going on? Has anyone ever encountered this problem? Set this.Cursor = Cursors.IBeam, for the CustomControl.
