    - SHGetFileInfo I am using SHGetFileInfo to get the list of icons for a bunch of files, and taking those icons and putting them in an ImageList. The ImageList is then being used with a ListView control to display the list of files and their associated icons. Unfortunately the alpha transparencies appear as black in the icons. To resolve this I tried (as per the microsoft article: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa289524(VS.71).aspx) to add a manifest to the exe file, I also changed the colordepth of the ImageList to: ColorDepth.Depth32Bit. The icons still have a black border. I am using VS2005, .NET framework 2.0 on an XP machine. The manifest I used is below. Can anyone suggest anything else I can do to get the icons without the black border?     - Error when calling a webservice from a windows service Hi, I am trying to call a webservice from a windows service application. It works only if I launch the windows service app from VS.Net 2005 (Worked around from Main()) or from a winform test application. However, it generates a kind of security error after I install and start the service in my Window Server machine. I believe that it is related to authentication.     - Two-layered image control Hi to all. I need to create a custom control which does the following: - It should contain a first, fixed image. - It should manage a second image, which will change programmatically. - It should display the second image on top of the first one, updating it in response to user events; the second image will of course have a transparent background. - The second image should be accessible outside the control, and wil be used for printing on some paper forms which are, as you probably guessed, the same as the first image; this is the reason for having two separate images. I'm trying to develop this, but I'm quite confused about the various System.Drawing classes and which Windows Forms control is the best to use as my control's base class. I don't thoroughly understand the process of painting a control, and the relationships between an Image, a Drawing object and the control. My initial guess was to use a PictureBox, set its BackGroundImage property to the fixed image and use the Image property for my drawing... but I don't know how to do manual drawing this way. Is this a good approach, or there is a better one? Also, I know very little about printing with Windows Forms. What do I need for printing? An Image? A Graphics object? What else?     - Using Win32 API to track file changes with username I am trying to write an app that uses the FileSystemMonitor class. I can successfully track changes but have now been asked to add the username associated with the change. I have used DLLImport to add Netapi32.dll to the project and I can successfully get the username for create and change events but it does not return anything for delete events. After debugging the code I believe it is because the file is gone before the NetFileEnum function can get the information. Does anyone know of another place I can hook to get the information I need that may be more reliable? I am not locked into using the NetFileEnum or even the Netapi32.dll library at this point.     - Global Variable I have a handfull of variables that I'd like to make Global to my application In the old VB6 days, I'd create a Module, and put them there, accessible from any form in the application However, in VS.Net 2005, I added a module, and it acts somewhat like a class, in that, to access a Public variable, there, I must precede the variable name with the module name, like: mdlVars.MyVar Is this pretty much how it's done, or, if not, what's a more acceptible approach?     - Winform blinks when Java application is activated. Hello, We are having an unusual issue with a .NET 1.1 Winforms application. There is one particular Winform within the application that blinks, or quickly diappears and reappears on the screen, when a Java application is maximized and sharing the screen with the Winform. It almost looks like a timer, with each second causing the Winform to quickly disappear and reappear. This only occurs when the Java application is also sharing the desktop screen with the Winform. When the Java application is minimized, the Winform stops blinking. What is interesting is that this is one of three Winforms that are open and visible from the same Winform assembly, but only one has the blinking issue. So far we are able to give the users a temporary fix by changing the refresh rate on their displays to anything, then back to their original refresh rate, and the problem then completely goes away until the PC is rebooted or logged out. I've done some searches, and have found that there are bugs in the transparency of Winforms, and that setting the Transparency Key property to a Color usually resolves the issue. I tired this, and it didn't work. I'm going to try and create a project with just this Winform, to see if I can recreate the issue.     - problem with inherited Windows Form I wrote a screen that has a grid on it and a few controls. Later I needed the same screen but with a few more controls...but I still needed the old configuration. Since this was the case and since there was alot of code driving the grid I created another windows form that inherited from my original one. This worked great at the time. Today I went in to the original windows form and made a change and when I tested it out I noticed that if I open the inherited form that the grid wasn't right. In the inherited form I had made the grid a slight bit shorter because I need some room for the new controls. This size change is being ignored now. If I look at the window in the designer its showing the Grid as being locked. Its the only control that is locked....and it was set to protected not private on the original screen.     - ClickOnce Deployment in a Plug-in architecture context Hi all, I've been browsing through the different posts for a few days now but I didn't found the answer. We are considering the use of the ClickOnce deployment framework for a C# application that has a plug-in architecture. Plug-ins are developed as independent DLL projects. The plugins are loaded at run-time and are not really known by the application. The plugins offer different services used that can be used by other services registered to a service broker in our application. Our main application can be easily deployed with ClickOnce but we are wondering what to do with the DLL plugin projects? I saw some posts talking about manualy updating the code with the deployment API to get optional file groups for example. Those groups of files would have been added via the MAGEUI.exe tool for example. I understand how this could work. But, what happens if we want versionning also on the DLL projects? Each time a DLL is modified, the manifest files needs to be updated and our main application version incremented? Causing software update on our users computers for the whole application eventhough only a DLL has changed? Our plug-ins are role based also. Some users won't have specific plug-ins because they don't need to. So triggering a full update on the application would cause these clients to try to update for nothing right? Is there a way to successfuly and easily manage DLL projects versioning? Is this method the only way? Anybody successfully deployed this kind of project architecture with ClickOnce? Any ideas on how to resolve this? Should we still consider ClickOnce? Another question we have, is it possible to create an MSI deployment that includes all external components (databases, etc..) and that would be able to update the application via ClickOnce updates? Is it only to provide manifest files during the installation? Does someone has documented such process? I hope my questions are clear enough to inspire you answers! :) Thanks!     - Generated Program.cs uses special way of disposing native resource Hi, To properly clean up native resources, one should always use "using (Blah blah = new Blah())" for types "Blah" that implement IDisposable. It seems to me that the code generated by Visual Studio in Program.cs doesn't live by this rule? A form is always IDisposable, so who calls the .Dispose() method on the form? I'm not sure the normal Application.Run() because I'm trying to use Microsoft.VisualBasic.ApplicationServices.WindowsFormsApplicationBase.Run() instead, in order to get a clean implementation of "single instance application". My question is, why isn't the Form1() instance in the generated code wrapped into some kind of "using" statement? Is there some kind of special case going on here?     - Login window vs Main window I have developed a Windows application which is started with a Shared Main object. The first thing it does is launch a login window. If the user types in a correct company, username and password, the login window is disposed and the main application is run (Application.Run(newprg)). This works nicely as it is. However, for the user to switch companies, he must exit the application and re-launch. How can I make the login window work with both the Shared Main and the application itself? Once the application loads, it displays items specific to the newly logged-onto company. If I could just make the application re-load itself after the login screen is launched from the app!     - How to read Default Values from App.Config for User Settings? Hi all; How can I read default values for user settings from the app.config file? I've seen someone mention using the .DefaultSettingValueAttribute and reflection, but I don't know how to use them. I am trying to do the following: 1) Create a simple Windows App that has one user setting named "SupportAddress" and a default (string) value. 2) The default support address is in the App.Config file. 3) Make a form which allows users to modify and save the setting. This creates the User.Config file in the Application Data folder. 4) This I don't know - If the users mess up the support address value, I want to allow them to read the default value for the SupportAddress setting from the App.Config, not from the User.Config file.     - Draw in form titlebar from external code? [.NET 2.0] I want to be able to insert some text into the active form's title bar, from code that is external to the form. It's essentially a timer showing time elapsed since something happened in the application. I have seen posts about using the WM_NCPAINT message, but that requires code in the forms themselves. Ideally I don't want to have to add any code or anything else to the target form(s) - I want this to be completely driven from the external code. The forms themselves don't even need to know it is happening. Can this be done? It seems to me I should be able to get hold of a Graphics object, device context, or something for the form's outer window, then just draw the text into it at the appropriate place.     - Databind a nullable date to a masked textbox Is there a way to databind a nullable date to a masked textbox? I have a nullable date defined in a business object and have bound it to a masked textbox, but when I clear out the date in the field, it will no longer let me exit the field, and gives me an error that it is an invalid format for a date. (duh!) I bound it using the designer, and when that didn't work, tried doing it in code. Here's my code: Binding b = new Binding("Text", PlanListBindingSource, "StartDate", true, DataSourceUpdateMode.OnValidation, "00/00/00", "MM/dd/yy"); this.startDateMaskedTextBox.DataBindings.Add(b); Frankly, I'd be happy with 00/00/00 or even an empty string; I can check it before storing it back to the database if I need to. I just want my user to be able to blank out the field if (s)he wants to, but also be able to use the masking so they don't have to enter the slashes. Also, did the Autotab feature that was in VB6 with the Masked Edit Control not get carried into the one in .Net 2.0? I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give me.     - Newbie question: how to set focus to a usercontrol I have a usercontrol that contains another usercontrol, which in turn contains a PictureBox control. Under a certain condition, I need to set the input focus on the outermost usercontrol. But once the PictureBox control (the outermost usercontrol's grandchild) has got the input focus, I cannot transfer the focus back to the outermost usercontrol (at least not by simply invoking its Focus() member function). Why is this? What can I do to take away the keyboard input focus from that grandchild, the PictureBox control, and transfer it back to the outermost usercontrol? (I have tried to find information about keyboard focus handling that seems relevant to this question, but what I have found seems rather far removed from what I need to understand here...) Note: My application requires very little keyboard input: mainly a few keyboard-accelerators, and the copy/paste/ cut/delete key. But the copy/paste/cut/delete key must go to the right usercontrol, because copy/paste/cut/delete must be handled differently, depending on which usercontrol has the input focus (or, rather, should have it, from my point of view). In essence, I am trying to base input focus on the position of the mouse pointer: if that grandchild PictureBox control does not have the mouse pointer within its bounds, it should not receive keyboard input, i.e. should not have input focus.     - Datagridview help I'm looking for help with datagridview. I have a form that works with a Databale bound to a datagridview. However I only want to display and edit a few colums (in a different order than they appear in the underlying datatable). When I set autogeneratecolumns to false, as in the example below, the columns show up with no data in them and are not bound to the underlying datatable. The example below works fine when I allow autogenerate columns. Howver I get a datagridview which includes all of the columns in the underlying datatable. Does anybody know what steps exatly autogeneratecolumns takes, so that I can replicate them to create the databinding manually?     - Font problem when subclassing TextBox I've subclassed TextBox to create a version that will paint default text on its background when the control contains no text. Everything works great, except the font changes to bold or something when I select the text in the control. If I move the focus off the control, the font changes back to what I set it to.     - Graphics dpi not correct I am in the load event of a user control. I get its Graphics with this.CreateGraphics() The DpiX and DpiY are both always 96.0 This does not vary, regardless of the actual resolution of the screen. I have tested the value in code that is executed after the load event, and the value is the same. The docs say that Dpix is "the horizontal resolution supported by this Graphics". I don't know if this is supposed to mean the current resolution. If not, it doesn't seem to be a very useful datum. I have to draw accurately on the screen regardless of resolution.     - Dynamically add menuItem - reflection and System.ErrorHandler Using .Net 1.1, C# I am trying to add a MenuItem with information from a database. I am not sure how to create the reference for the ErrorHandler.     - Problems with BackGroundWorker Hy, I have a backgroundworker doing some work when the user presses a button, the problem is when I quickly start and stop the backgroundworker, after 3-4 starts the DoWork event doesn't fire anymore.     - Is it possible to set a TextRenderingHint for an entire appplication? Hello, I would like to be able to have my app use Clear Type (or at least antialiased) text rendering. Is there a way to enable this for an entire application? I don't see any properties that allow for setting a TextRenderingHint on an individual control (Label for example), but since this is supported by GDI+ I don't see why Windows.Forms in general wouldn't support it. I could derive my own controls of course and override their Paint behaviors, but that seems like a lot of bother for something the standard controls should support. Is there a way to do this?     - How to capture my form I am developing Windows Forms application in C# using VS 2005. The application draws some shapes on the panel. I need to change color intensity on pixel-by-pixel basis (to compensate for monitor flaws).     - Validating event not fired on form close Hi, i use the compact framework (mobile 5) with a form containing several text boxes. I want to validate the text boxes when the text boxes lose focus and therefore I set an event handler for this Evenything works fine when tabbing from one text box to another within the form. But when the user hits ok button (on the top right) no validation takes place. Question 1: Why is validation not called when the user hits ok (NOT cancel!). Question 2: I googled through the newgroups and found something about CausesValidation = true (as default for windowsforms). I couldnt find the property in the properties list of my form?     - Grabbing window messages I've got a WinForms app. Essentially all this app is is a notification try icon with an optional configuration form. I am trying to capture the WM_SETTINGCHANGE window message coming to my app. Since the app has no form, I'm doing this by adding a MessageFilter to the form. In my MessageFilter class, I implement the PreFilterMessage method to grab the event and test for the WM_SETTINGCHANGE code (0x001a). however, I don't seem to ever get that message, even though I know its getting sent. Not sure what I'm missing. During debug, I know I'm getting some window messages, but not the one I need!     - Tabcontrol I have a tabcontrol on a form. The controls on the tabpages are bound to a dataset. Before the record is updated I check that the textboxs on Tabpage2 aren't empty. All works fine if the tabpage has been selected. If the page hasn't been selected 0 length is returned. If I set the selected index to the second tab page before validating it works fine, but this causes the form to show the second tab for no reason.     - SmartClient - ASP.NET Issue Greetings, I have an aspx page where on it is a link that calls my smartclient (a windows form) that opens up. When the user is done in the form, he or she hits a button that saves data and closes the form. I want the smartclient to call the opened browser (IE6 and maybe 7 down the line) and refresh the aspx page. The page contains a datagrid control that gets populated on the page's load event.     - Invisible GDI+ window stealing focus Got a focus problem with a simple windows app. When running this application in a logon script before explorer has started it doesn't receive focus.     - Problem with class inherited from DataGridView (VS-2005) In my app's form there are 8 instances of the same (functionally same) grid which should handle data of URL type (same 3 columns, same validations, same data classes, same visual behavior). Instead of recreating in VS Designer this grid 8 times, I wrote a class UrlGrid which inherits from standard DataGridView. In constructor of UrlGrid I added 3 columns to it and set all properties. All is good for now and the new control even automatically appears on Designer toolbox. But when I drop this grid on a form and save it, all the columns are doubled! I figured out why it's happening and fixed this but adding the following in UrlGrid: [DesignerSerializationVisibility(DesignerSerializationVisibility.Hidden)] private new DataGridViewColumnCollection Columns { get { return base.Columns; } } The DesignerSerializationVisibility attibutes tells Designer not to save Coulmns property in MyForm.Designer.cs file. It helped a bit: in terms of getting rid of doubling the coulmns. But still the columns still are created in the form as form's variables. They are not added to the grid instance but keep being generated on every change-and-save of MyForm.cs[Design], resulting in extra 24 (8*3) "hanging" objects of type DataGridViewColumn and about of 300 lines of code where their numerous properties are set. By "hanging" I mean that these objects are not used anywhere. But still, after 2 weeks of working on the form, its designer-file has become more than 120,000 lines of code and about 1MB in size, dramatically increasing total time of edit-save- compile-run cycle. So, the question: how to tell Designer not to generate Columns variables for this custom grid class? I tried [Browsable(false)] and some other attribute but it didn't help. I am using the crystalreportviewer on a windows form, works great, but my
question is I want to view the report using continuous pages, not having to
go to the toolbar to say next page. how can this be done? i see in the web
version of the viewer a "seperatepages" boolean property, but don't see this
in the forms version.
