    - All capitals by Key Press Hi I am trying to build a windows forms control which derieves from TextBox. The added functionality that i want is that I want every character that appears on the TextBox should be in Capitals.     - Slow WinForm 1st launch I've got a simple winform app written in C# that takes almost 5 seconds to start after a reboot. The from was previously written in VB 6 and took less then 1 second to start. I've tried NGEN but it didn't seem to make a difference. Has anyone been able to solve the slow first launch problem?     - Controls in a panel are shown in incorrect order Hi, I've got a graphical application where some child controls are rendered inside a panel. This controls are user drawn and are transparent. The transparency works OK, I've been using Bob Powell tricks (http://www.bobpowell.net/transcontrols.htm). However, there's a big problem: child controls are drawn BACKWARDS its order. For example, if I add two controls and then I execute BringToFront() in one of them, it draws behind the other, but when I click, the mouse events are fired on it (so it is really in front). Below is the most important code from the control, the panel where controls are added is just a simple Panel with a transparent background, I hope if someone could help me.     - Datagrid - Windows Forms - Can't see what is in the grid The grid has rows but you can't see them. You see the grid but all rows are completly blue but when you click on a column in the row you see the text that is in the row. I sprinkled datagrid.refresh and application.doevents around but it did not help. It seems like it's memory or video card related.     - Embed PDF in Winforms Good Day, Gentlemen: I've been tasked with creating a screen that allows users to double-click items from list of filenames. Each filename in the list corresponds to a PDF file. On double-click, the corresponding PDF file should be displayed. The catch is that the PDF viewer needs to be embedded *inside* my WinForms app, as opposed to being externally launched. The user needs to be able to scroll through the PDF and optionally print it.     - Access 2002 like Combobox in .NET 2003 We are trying to rebuild a current Access 2002 (XP) mdb program to VB.NET with a SQL database - we are having problems with a suitable combobox. There are many threads discussing multiple column comboboxes in .NET. We are having success with the multiple columns similar to the combobox from Access 2002 (XP). Our biggest problem is speed. In a form in Access 2002, our combobox is able to load data in a table in separate Access database file in a fraction of a second. This table is already sorted in the proper order, and has 65,000 records (almost the limit of items in the Access combobox). For this speed test, the table consists of one field. The records are just integers counting from 1 to 65,000. The Access combobox is filled with data by setting the combobox.RowSource property to equal a SQL Select Statement: SELECT field1 FROM table1 IN 'c:\pathto\database.mde" We tried to do a similar test using the VB.NET combobox with Microsoft SQL Desktop Edition 2000. Same table as above. We tried several approaches including binding to a DataSet, binding to an array (filled the array with DataReader), and using the combobox.Items.AddRange(array). The best result we could get with the 65,000 records was to use a DataReader to fill an Array, then use the combobox.item.addrange - but this was approx. 7 seconds - still slow compared to Access, and too slow for our purpose. This 7 second was during the AddRange step, not during the looping through the DataReader to fill the Array. Filling the Array was very quick. All of our tests indicate the the slow down is getting the information into the combobox, not get the data from the database. Is there a Microsoft suggestion get a large list of data into the combobox quickly the way Access could do it? Is there a third party combobox that can work in VB.NET and load the data quickly, preferable with multiple columns? Any other suggestions? VB.NET solutions are preferable, but we do have VS.NET Pro 2003, so we can support other languages as well. Thank you for all that took the time to read this long message. PS - it was suggested that 65,000 records are too many to be showing to a user. The purpose of this list to allow the patient to select a client/patient from a large and growing list in a medical lab setting.     - Closing an application before it's opened. I've written a C# Windows Forms application. Now I've decided that it needs to check that the user is a member of certain groups as it's opening and close if they're not. A bit of research suggests that I won't be able to close the application before it's finished loading. this.Close() doesn't work in these situations. What's the recognized way of achieving this? I like to do things properly. If I was starting from scratch, would I create the project as a Console Project and use something like: Form1 form1 = new Form1(); form1.ShowDialog(); to display the form? (And find some way to hide the Console window.) Or do I create it as a Windows Application and find run the group membership checks as part of the first (somehow hidden) window and then call the main window with code similar to that above?     - Mapping from DataGridView to the actual DataRow Hi, I have a DataGridRow which i fill with data from a DataAdapter. Now when the user selects a row in the grid, how do I find out which row datarow in the dataset is "selected"? I got this to work in asp.net 1.1 fairly easy, but how do i do it in winforms 2.0? I know I can just use SelectedRows[0].Cells[0].Value to get the value of the first cell in the selected row, but this is not what I want. The problem is that ExtendedProperty is not an property but a set and get method. When I bind the control, I don't want anything selected.     - Interthread communication? Hi, I'm fairly new to C# and .NET. I'm trying to write winforms app that simulates a piece of hardware that our company develops. The hardware behaves as a TCP server and processes commands received from clients. The winforms allows a user to change the state of the simulator, to simulate faults, state changes etc. What I've currently got is a simulator class that will run in its own thread and processes client commands. When the user makes state changes in the winform I need a method to inform the running thread that it needs to reload its internal state. I was hoping to avoid using semaphores by invoking an update method on the simulator thread, but I can't seem to find a way to do this (only from a thread pool thread).     - Crystal Viewer Control Bug ? Hi, I've used the crystal report viewer in Window forms several times and have got the hang of logging into servers and passing parameters at runtime. I've written this new crystal report which works fine in the Crystal design editor during preview but on the same dataset it dosen't work in the dotnet windows form control. The report loads fine into the control it's just the Crystal scripts I have put against events inside the report EG suppress group and suppress fields don't run if I view the report through the viewer control.     - Flicker Problems when Drawing a Custom Radio Button Hi All, I have created a radio button that uses images instead of the silly "circle" for a touch-screen kiosk application where users will have to use their large fingers to select radio buttons. Create a new Windows project and a button on it, on the click event of the button add the following code: Cursor.Current = System.Windows.Forms.Cursors.Cross; Run the project and click on the button, It was my understanding that the cursor should change but it does not, it only changes as long as the code is running for example, replace the previous code with the following: Cursor.Current = System.Windows.Forms.Cursors.Cross; System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); This will change the cursor for one second.     - Problem Solution Explorer and forms I just noticed a very bizarre situation. In Solution Explorer, some of my forms did not display their forms icon, but rather a class icon. (This particular solution is under VSS control.) Therefore, I cannot see the form in the forms designer. Most of the forms are inherited from FormBase, which only contains a status bar with panels. Most of the forms are locked. I checked-out one form, and immediately its icon changed to the regular forms icon in Solution Explorer. I then undid the check-in, and the icon remained as the forms icon. I don't mind this 'work-around', but this technique worked on all the forms except for one. Any ideas?     - HDC System.ArguementException in IE emdedded control Hello, I am having a problem on a a PC where it throws an unhandled exception in in a embedded control in IE. The exception is a System.ArgumentException and I cannot even catch it to find out where it is coming from... I have a try..catch in loading the control, so that should catch all the errors.     - How to find what control is under the mouse pointer Hi, Does anyone know any way to find what control is under the mouse pointer? In my application (MDI forms application) I need to track mouse move events and find what control is currently under the mouse, it can be MDI child form, button, label, etc. Maybe some Win API function which finds Handle of the object so I could convert it to Control using FromHandle method?     - Issue w/ Property Grid and unhandled exceptions I am having an issue with the Windows Forms Property Grid control. Unhandled exceptions that occur in my custom TypeConverter are being suppressed. Example, I have created a custom TypeConverter that inherits from System.ComponentModel.ExpandableObjectConverter. I have a coding error in the ConvertTo function. When the Property Grid control fires the ConvertTo method, an unhandled exception should be raised, but it isn't. The only thing that happens is that the ConvertTo function stops executing at the point of the exception and the next statement on the call stack is executed. Now obviously, if I have no coding errors, this wouldn't be a concern, but I am human and do make mistakes (rarely, LOL) so this does concern me because I could look over coding errors during testing since the IDE/debugger is not reporting the unhandled exception.     - DRAWIMAGE() -> TONS OF PAGE FAULTS! Originally, I thought this was due to DoubleBuffer, but ran some further experiments and discovered that page faults occur when calling DrawImage(). For example, create 2 images about 800x800, then call DrawImage to copy from to the other (on say a mouse click). Notice about 600+ page faults occur each time (the larger the area, the greater the number of page faults). I have an application that calls DrawImage() once a second to update the main screen, so after a few days, the page fault count is monsterous. I swear this bogs down my system too.     - DataGridColumnStyle issue I've hit a wierd issue with the DataGridColumnStyle. I've got a DataGrid that has a DateTimePicker column. Using the example from the msdn i've created a class that inherits DataGridColumnStyle to host the DateTimePicker: public class DataGridTimePickerColumn:DataGridColumnStyle { private DateTimePicker myDateTimePicker = new DateTimePicker(); } and of course it includes all the other methods needed to make it run. I also used the same method to add a ComboBox column to the datagrid. These classes worked just fine until recently, the datagrid would load you could click on the column and get a DateTimePicker object and select a date. Today I noticed that when I click either column all I get is a TextBox. So I checked the class and found that Design View is now showing the following error for both classes: The designer must create an instance of type 'System.Windows.Forms.DataGridColumnStyle' but it cannot because the type is declared as abstract. I have done several updates lately for ASP.Net and and the Framework. I also had an Office XP update that messed with this project, the solution has 2 projects and after the update I loaded it and only one project was present so I had to re-add the second project. So I subclassed RichTextBox, and overrode WndProc looking for WM_PASTE and WM_CUT (0x0302 and 0x0300). But I don't get these messages on Ctrl+X or Ctrl+V. If I subclass a TextBox, I catch the messages as expected, but not in a RichTextBox. I do get these messages if I call the Paste() and Cut() methods directly, but not on the shortcut keys.     - IExtenderProvider and Type Property I've spent several hours on Google and founds 100's of entries that get close to the answer, but can't quite get there. I'm creating an component that acts as an ExtenderProvider for other components. One of the properties that it exposes is a class I've created that itself has a number of properties. I've created a type converter that is based on ExpandableObjectConverter. Overrode the GetCreateInstanceSupported, CreateInstance, CanConvertTo, and ConvertTo methods. Here is the problem: The only way I can get it to work correctly is to create an InstanceDescriptor based on a constructor that has ALL the properties. The class is pretty complex and I'd rather not have to have to reference all the properties in a constructor, InstanceDescriptor, etc. Is there a way to do this with an ExtenderProvider, just use a few key properties in the InstanceDescriptor and have any other properties serialized the usual way (i.e. the DesignerSerializationVisibility.Content? If I set DesignerSerializationVisibility on the GetXXXXX method of the ExtenderProvider, it seems to treat it as a property of the actual component. I would like to be able to set this property in the PropertyGrid by choosing from a list of UserControls that inherit from MyUserControlBase. Create a new basic windows app, C# will do. In the forms constructor put this before or after the InitializeComponent call: this.SetStyle(ControlStyles.OptimizedDoubleBuffer,true); build and run the app. Use task manager to observe the processes PF delta. Vertically enlarge the form. It will be observed that the process generates many thousands of page faults per second, with a full screen app at 1600 x 1200 I have seen in excess of 50,000 PFs per second! The problem is always present. The problem also happens if we set DoubleBuffer property; although this s described as Obsolete in the latest beta documentation. The problem occurs with both 16-bit and 32-bit color settings. It occurs at 1600x1200 and 1024x768 It occurs with desktop style set to Classic or Windows XP It occurs when I use the NVidia driver for my GeForce FX 5200 or if I boot XP in VGA mode (thus forcing it to use a different driver). It occurts on both Win XP Professional (32-bit) and Windows XP Proferssional 64 for AMD (The OEM version, NOT a beta) I am using an Athlon 64 3400+, 1Gig and Asus K8V-SE DeLuxe motherboard. Basically the fault seems to be independent of driver, color depth, resolution, refresh rate and operating system. By not calling SetStyle for DoubleBuffer or OptimizeDoubleBuffer the problem goes away, but the app then suffers from very bad flickering. Setting both styles has no effect either. This was first reported in bug: FDBK23039 but was then only seen in a test version of a complex app that also uses some sophisticated class libraries (under development) and some complex unmanaged (unsafe) library (also under development) and naturally this was the main suspect, since it access lots of memory and could have lay behind the page faulting. Since the problem can very easily be reproduced with almost no effort, it is now clear that it lies somewhere in the Framework, GDI+ or possibly some component of XP (common to both 32-bit and 64-bit ?) I have reported this to MS, althoung I cant disguise my intense frustration at the apalling quality of their bug reporting system, after entering this detailed report (that took me several hours to carefully test and document) the stupid web based bug system refuses to accept > 2000 chars, forcing me to hastily edit and break it up and making almost impossible to now follow.     - Background shows while switching between forms I have an multi-form application, which uses owner drawn buttons that use bitmaps. The flicker-like effect is also present on the PC, but much less so, probably because of the faster hardware. I have tried double-buffering drawing the whole form, using the form's OnPaint() rather than the controls' OnPaint(), but this seemed to slow down the drawing further, and the flicker is more pronounced on the desktop but shows a white background, rather than what is behind the form. And the bitmap buttons dont even show up on .NET CF, just the background. Looks to me like double-buffering is out. It seems to be working OK in my computer but I am wondering if other people
will have a problem. I am going to assume that you would have to have a very
old computer to not support these color depths, is my assumption correct?
