Property Grid
The .NET Property Grid control has a PropertyChanged event
which fires when the property was changed, but the user has to move the
focus from
the current property to other location in order to trigger the event.
This is not quit enough for my need ( since the user has to move out of
property being edited ).
Does anyone know about the "editing" event.

ComboBox DropDown does not display list item
Problem: If I click to display list items in ComboBox, all list items are not
visible to select. However, if I select one of them, then I can see it on
ComboBox.
This problem only happens in Windows XP. In Windows 2000 it does work fine.
I can work around using DrawMode.OwnerDrawFixed and OnDrawItem event. But, I
don't want to add them to all of my source codes.
Environment: Windows XP ServicePack2, Visual studio.net 2003 with .NET

datagrid preventing new rows
hi,
i am using 2 datagrids tied together with datarelations. That part works
great.
i need to suppress the new row on the datagrid but cannot use the readonly
properties on the datagrid so i can allow the user to check off on bool
columns.
I know dataviews can prevent it with allowNew set to false but i can't
seem to use dataviews with the relationships

Vanishing Dialog Boxes
I have an application where the Font Dialog box does not appear until I
alt-tab away to another application, then alt-tab back to mine. Suddenly,
then it is visible. This also happens with the "File exists. Overwrite
Yes/No" message in the Save dialog box.
I am using VB.Net 2002 on Windows 2000.
I have reduced this down to a tiny sample application. Create a new
application, add a font dialog, two picture boxes, and a button. Then, use
the code supplied below. Run the application and click on the button to
display the Font Dialog box. But, the dialog box doesn't appear until you
alt-tab to another app, obscuring our program, then come back. Suddenly,
then the dialog box is visible. If you remove the Image.Clone code from the
Paint event, it works fine.
Note that the image I am using comes with Visual Studio.

TabControl - Owner Drawn TabPage Dividers
Hi,
[ BTW I'm using C# ]
I am trying to create a custom style tab control. I've managed to code it
so far so that I can custom draw the TabPage dividers ( the buttons at the
top of the TabControl that select the TabPage ).
My ultimate goal is to have fancy style TabPage dividers which overlap.
I've created a Polygon ( GraphicsPath ) to draw these, but cant work out how
to perform the HitTest of overlapping dividers ( the standard control works
off rectangles only - which is useless for my overlapping dividers!! ).
Can I intercept the HitTest message - so that I can test against my Polygon
( GraphicsPath ) and then set the SelectedTab myself ? If so a bit of sample
could would be great.

Newbie question about system font size
After increasing the system font size (e.g. 96 -> 120 dpi),
the form will becomes larger.
How can i know by what ratio the form is enlarged?
At first i think it is 120/96 (= 1.25) but seems i'm wrong...

Running Macro in windows form application
Hi All,
I was reading msdn documentation pertaining to macros. It says that VS
macros currently do not support win forms. Actually I need to write a macro
which will call a COM component and pass it two parameters. I need to use
this macro in a winform application. Is above statement apply in this case?
I mean could this be done ?
FYI I am using .Net framework 1.1 with visual studio .Net 2003 on Windows XP
professional OS.

Messenger service
I created another service application to replace the Messenger service.
This application will be listening to \\.\mailslot\messngr for incoming
messages.
I do a net send from another client machine, i get this error
"An error ocurred while sending a message to [my computer]
The message alias could not be found on the network"
Besides listening to \\.\mailslot\messngr , what else does my applcation
need to do for it to emulate Messenger service?

BeginInvoke / EndInvoke race condition
Because the results to BeginInvoke occur async'ly, it stands to reason
that each call of execute is actually a record on a queue, and
therefor, each asyncResult must actually be a separate item on that
queue. Conceptually, the nicest place to put the IAsyncResult to use
for EndInvoke is with the queued item itself, that is, in the execute
method that BeginInvoke enqueued. BeginInvoke fires as needed, and the
"invoked" method cleans itself up by calling the matching EndInvoke.
But, there's no way to actually make this work as above. BeginInvoke
can hit execute before any possible asyncResult assignment takes place.
Consider this pseudocode example:

SelectedIndexChanged fires erroneously in OwnerDraw ListBox
I have a listbox with the DrawMode set to OwnerDrawVariable.
If the listbox is half full, and I click inside the listbox but not
directly on an item, the SelectedIndexChanged event fires. The selected
index is Count-1. NOTE: This behavior is not seen with OwnerDrawFixed
or Fixed.
Anyone know a workaround?

i have 2 forms and i would like to make the 2nd form listen for a change in
the first form. is there a way to do this? i'm already passing "this" to the

Worker Threads, U/I form, BeginIvoke, PostMessage like thread completion

This snippet shows how a worker thread can be set up that properly
calls the parent form back. The basic jist is that an asynch delegate
is used to run the worker thread, and, the worker thread in turn uses
the forms BeginInvoke to effectively "PostMessage" back to the calling
thread.
To illustrate propogating exceptions from the worker thread to the
parent form, two buttons are used. One forces an error, and the other
does not.

Error in Form Constructor
We are hitting a problem that we can't explain and wondered if anyone has
seen this before or can suggest how we can stop it happening :
Form 'A' inherits from System.Windows.Forms.Form
Form 'B' inherits from Form 'A'.
Form C inherits from Form B.
Form B (the one in the middle) has a TextBox component on it.
The constructor of Form 'C' attempts to assign a string value to the 'Text'
property of the TextBox. It does this after all form initialization has
taken place.
Occasionally (we haven't identified a definite pattern), when the code
assigning the 'Text' property of the TextBox executes, it falls over with an
exception 'Object variable not set to an instance of an object'.
The problem definitely lies with the assignment (i.e. does not lie with the
value being assigned). We've also tried Me.TextBox.Text = value and
MyBase.TextBox.Text = value but still the same. We've also tried assigning
values to different components (such as CheckBox.Checked = True) and the
same thing happens. The component can be read; i.e. code like
MsgBox(TextBox.Text) works fine.
We thought we had solved the problem when discovering that if the component'
s properties have anything assigned to them at design time, then this
run-time issue would occur fairly frequently (but seemingly randomly).
Ensuring nothing is assigned at design time (i.e. the 'Text' property or
'Checked' property is not assigned at design time) seemed to halt the issue
occurring. However, now it is occurring again and we can't fix it.
This does seem to be a form inheritance issue as I haven't seen it on any
forms that are just inherited from System.Windows.Forms.Form.

Saving windows state
I have an MDI application and save the states of the forms when they are
closed. This works correctly if each form is closed independently but if
the MDI container is closed the form states are incorrect. Basically the
first form to close is shows maximized but the rest show normal.
Currently I am using FormWindowsState to determine if the form is maximized
on close.
Is there another method?

ApplicationContext class question
I have just come across the ApplicationContext class and I am wondering if
it might not be a best practice to use this object for the purpose of
encapsulating the logic that controls when the main form in an application
is actually displayed. For example, in my app, I would like to display a
login form (and maybe a splash screen) prior to actually giving the user
access to the main form. Right now, I display the login form from within
the load event of my main form. But, I am wondering if I could encapsulate
logic to display the login form, accept the user's login credentials,
authenticate the user, etc. in the ApplicationContext object, and then only
display the main from after the user has been authenticated. This way, if
the user is not authenticated, the main form never gets loaded and the
application exits.
It just seems like it would make sense to keep the logic that "oversees" the
display of forms out of the main form itself.
Has anyone done anything like this? Is there a design pattern for doing
this?

MDI Child icon...
HI all! I have a problem with MDI forms... I have a parent form in
which I must show different child forms, but only one a a time. So
when I open a new form, I check if a form is already open and if it's
so, after some checks, I close it. The problem is that since I don't
need to open multiple forms, I always want the child forms to be
maximized. But if I set the windows status property of the child forms
to Maximized and set all the icons to false, whhen I open the forms I
can see the icons in the left part of the parent menu. When I click
the minimize icon the child form WindowsState switch to normal, that
is the user is free to move it inside the parent form, but the problem
is I cannot see the maximize and minimize icons so I can't maximize it
again. Is there any way to hide the icons when the child form is
maximized? Or it would be good to catch the minimize event in some way
and preventing it.

How to save preferences for an app?
Before .NET, I used to use the registry to store app preferences. But
apparently now there's some other way.. like storing the data in .xml
files in \Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\<your app name>.
Could someone point me in the direction of some info or tutorials on how
to save app prefs in .NET? I found some docs on XML, but man.. it went
way over my head.

WebBrowser in MDI form messes with other controls focus
Hi All,
If I place a com "wrapped" WebBrowser control on a form - it works fine if
NOT and MDI child.
If it is an MDI child, then the other controls (text boxes for example) -
will not take mouse input correctly, etc.
I researched and found a fix to call form.Activate() if WM_MOUSEACTIVATE is
called - but it did not work.
I also found a fix to additionally subclass the WebBrowser to call Focus() -
which did not work.
If you switch to a different MDI child, and then switch back - everything
then works correctly.
If you switch to a different application, and then switch back - everything
then works correctly.
This is very frustrating - I have not found any useful info so far.
- Again - the Activate() on WM_MOUSEACTIVATE does not work

how to expand and collapse rows in DataGrid to create parent/child
Hello al,
I am new to Windows Forms and for the past week or so, I have been
pulling my hair out, trying to figure out how I can implement
expand/collapse in the DataGrid.
I do understand that if I setup relations between two tables in a
dataset, and then assign the primary table to the DataGrid, I get the
+/- buttons and I can expand and collapse, but this is NOT what I want.
I don't have two tables. I have 1 table, where there are rows of data,
some of which are childern of other rows. This is indicated by a colum
in each row, which has the ID of the parent row.

Basically, this person (in the link above) has implemented EXACTLY what
I want to do, by adding a colum with the +/- buttons, and then hiding
all rows that are NOT supposed to be displayed and displaying those what
ARE supposed to be displayed, using the Visible property of the row in
the datagrid (setting it to true/false as needed).
I have looked all over the internet to try and find out how to do this
in Windows Forms DataGrid, have had no luck so far. Your help would be
GREATLY appreciated.

Hello,
I am writing a Windows Forms application for users with a variety of screen
resolution settings (800 x 600, 1024 x 768, etc.) What is the best (fastest)
way to design an interface in which the controls will be positioned in an
appropriate scale regardless of the screen resolution? I started declaring
all the controls in my code and setting size properties, and testing logic to
determine where the controls should be positioned, but Iâ??m thinking there has
to be a better way.

How to display application build time at runtime?
I am using VS.NET 2003 and C# to develop a Windows Forms application targeted
at Windows XP. I would like to automatically capture the build time and date
such that it can be displayed by the application, for example as part of the

How can I load embedded resources from any namespace in my WinForm project?

Asychronous events and rendering contexts
Hopefully this is the right newsgroup. I figured you guys would be the best
experts on this.
I am learning C# and .NET and went a little crazy with the events. Now I am
not sure how to isolate this problem. Here is my architecture, I have:
1. an OpenGLPanel class derived from UserControl that handles the repainting
using OpenGL. A render event is published for subscribers to paint into the
window.
2. a Manipulator class that handles mouse and keyboard events to cause
rotations, scales, etc. using events.
3. a Camera class that rotates, zooms, etc. based on any subscriptions to a
Manipulator and posts view update events.
Okay, simple scenario, I have a form with two OpenGLPanels, visible. Each
has a camera and listens for the camera events. The camera listen for the
manipulator events. The manipulator listen's for the form's mouse and
keyboard events (a complete cycle!!!!!). The main form has a method to draw
an object and subscribes to the OpenGLPanel's render event.
Things work great in a serial world. I even could attach a manipulator to
both cameras, etc. Pretty cool!! I was just started to really like this new
environment. I decided to switch from just firing the event to doing an
asynchronous call (as a first step to remoting the camera). I would really
like a OneWay approach for the camera, but both of these destroy the OpenGL
context or something. Right now, I am only processing the camera updates to
the OpenGLPanel's asynchronously, but would suspect that all of the mouse
events are also handles asynchronously. The render events will always be
sequential, but I would also like to have the manipulator events happen
OneWay to the cameras.
The problem with the render made sense to me at first, if I set the active
rendering context and then the thread got bumped, etc. I added
[Synchronization] in front of the OpenGLPanel class. It and the Form1 class
are the only ones that make OpenGL calls. I get one of the Panels not
redrawing. The calls are all happening, but I think something in the state
got messed up. The other panel starts off blank and then when I force a
particular event (set of events) it shows up and works properly. Changing
the subscription order seems to reverse which panel works and which one does
not. Pretty much every method is atomic and nothing is left in a bad state
(if I programmed it correctly). I decided to add [Synchronization] before
all of my classes, but nothing helps. BTW, I never create any threads, just
those (two) from a default Windows form. I am running on a single CPU
machine.
Okay, now for the question(s):
1) Is this a correct way to protect a shared system resource?
2) Is there a better way?
3) Any guesses on what might be going on before I attempt to boil the code
down to a simpler test case (or assugn it as a midterm question :-) )?
4) I can see the High priority thread preempting the other thread, such that
mouse calls are continually triggered before any updates to the display can
finish. I would expect, that after I release the mouse and wait idle for
awhile the display would redraw.
Some other questions on multi-tasking:
4) My counter indicates I am still getting 70-90 frames-per-second, but
visually, it is more like 1-2 fps.
5) Are the events queued, or do I always just get the most recent event? If
they are queued, is there an easy way to only get the latest. I want to
display with the latest camera, not march thru all of the events.
6) How does a Windows form split up its tasks into threads? I know you want
the user interface thread to be at a high priority, is everything in the
form then issued at a low priority? This would include control updates and
displays, so ...
This is all educational code for my own amusement, so I happy to give the
entire project to anyone interested in looking into this further.

Good Practice on ListBox
Greetings
I want to display a listbox on the form which will include two columns from
the data table" FirstName" & "LastName"
What I've done now, is modify the DataAdapter to include two additional
colums as:
[FirstName] + " " +[LastName] As NameFN
[LastName] + " " +[FirstName] AS NameLN
I've selected NameFN as the DisplayMember of the listbox
However, I've also selected the Sort option to be true
So what I see on the listbox doesn't correspond to the record selected on
the form.
The record is selected automatically on the form because my DataSource
Property is bound to the dataset object.
Is this a good practice ?
Or its better to create a dynamic Array List on loadup and use that ?
If that is the case how can I make the list selection, make the record on
the form change ?

Problem positioning controls within a panel with autoscroll=true
I don't know if this is a bug or if I am doing something wrong, but hopefully
somebody could help me.
I have a panel with autoscroll=true, and I am trying to position controls
within it, however they don't position correctly.
According to MS's documentation Panel.Left "Gets or sets the distance, in
pixels, between the left edge of the control and the left edge of its
container's client area."
Here's the sample code for you to reconstruct it real quick.
Essentially its a form with a panel with autoscroll=true,
a textbox of any size outside of the panel,
and a button with the following click event handler.

It should draw textboxes diagonally toward the right, with a scrollbar
eventually appearing. However, if you move the horiz/vert. scrollbars any
bit after creating a few of these diagonal boxes, it jumps a huge gap, then
creates the textbox. What I think should be happening is that it should
create a lot of textboxes diagonally with no gaps between them regardless of
whether or not the scrollbars have been moved at all. I have tried using the
commented out location line above and I have tried setting the positions
before adding it into the panel. Nothing has worked for me so far.

Problem/Bug: poor C# windows forms accessibility for disabled?
Hi,
Because the blind are unable to use a mouse, keyboard navigation is
key. A major difficulty is that not all windows forms controls are
keyboard 'tab-able' or 'arrow-able' or have "tab order".
The application is built and the next step is to create the custom JAWS
(Freedom Scientific)screen reader script to read the application. The
application uses the accessibility properties for controls provided by
C#. JAWS reads properties these fine --using a mouse for access. For
example, JAWS can read ComboBoxes and DateTimePickers that are placed
into DataGrid cells without any problem. The problem is the lack of
keyboard access.
Using Microsoft's accessibility SDK 2.0 tools: AccExplorer32,
Inspect32, AccEvent32, I can gather a great deal of information. It
appears that C# controls can not be given individual unique IDs. JAWS
can navigate to IDs. Is there something that can act like a unique
identifier? Different classes/objects are simply labeled
WindowsForms10.Window.8.app3. This is too ambiguous. JAWS has a
limited number of recognized classes it understands, but a substitution
could be made if an unknown class was unique.
What about custom controls? Is there a way to uniquely ID C# custom
controls? There are many very interesting controls being developed in
the .NET world, that could be read if there where more identifiers.
Looking for help at MSDN and the Knowledge Base it seems that there is
a significant difference between C# and C/C++ functionality in this
context.
How can I have keyboard access to my C# windows forms application?

Embedded Control in IE, control loads but get System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission request error in IE...
Hello, I have been posting lately on my embbeded control. I have made
some progress.
My control is strong names, with allow partially trusted callers
attribute. I have created a custom code group with full trust for my
assembly.
Before, my control would not load at all due to security issues. I
would get exceptions outputed into my IEDebug log. Now i get no errors
in my IEDebug log but in Internet Explorer (Exclamation mark at the
bottom left of IE), I get an error:
Request for the permission of type
System.Security.Permissions.SecurityPermission, mscorlib,
Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089 failed.
I do not even know where to begin if I need to assert. What calls
would require me to Assert a SecurityPermission??

Forms with no title bar - Microsoft Money 2005
Hello folks.
I´d like to build a application with the same look and feel of the Microsoft
Money 2005. As you can see, the first screen is maximized with the control
buttons (minimize, maximize, close window) but the title bar, of the window,
is not showing blue, as Windows standard, it´s showing a part of a background
image, giving to the user the sensation that it has no form title. How can I
do that in C#? Is it possible to do that? Do you have a sample?

Hi,
I must design a method that receive a Control object and return a single
value if it is a TextBox object, another value if it is a ComboBox object
and so on.
If I try a "if-else-if" loop, this will be very unhappy! Can I use a foreach
to make that? How declare and create the array for use in the operator "is"
(for test a Control, like "cont is TextBox")?

Current record of datatable in dataset
Hi
I have a datatable which I have linked to a combo control, via the
datasource property of the combo control.
I have also set the displaymember property of the combo, to ensure that my
description is shown in the combo.
However, I want to have another value of the same row of the datatable (as
selected in the combo), displayed in a text box. ie. so that when I change
the value in the combo, a text box displays a value from another field in
the same datarow.
Can anyone offer any tips, or code samples?

Creating a dynamic grid
Hello,
I have a question about creating a dynamic grid layout.
The grid should have the following:
- a rowheader(12 columns). (0)
- a detail row with also 12 columns (contains the data). (1)
- a second row with 3 columns where the first column is empty, the second
column has a description in it like the rowheader above and a third column
with the value of this row. (2)
- a third row which has the same layout as the second row. (3)
row (1), (2) and (3) should be created multiple times depending on the data.
Is this possible to create this within C#.
At the moment I draw this "grid" with seperate labels. I do this when I
retrive the data for it. The data can change when clicking an other row in a
different grid.
My "label-grid" works fine but it is to slow when redrawing it when
selecting other data because the labels must be removed from the form and
created again within the code.
I have also a screenprint how it must look but can not attach this.

Howto trigger validation of a form

The ContainerControl.Validate() method is documented to:
"Validates the last invalidated control and its ancestors up through, but
not including, the current control."
How to I, from a form (more precisly a base form) trigger the validation of
the form itself.
I want to ensure that the Validation events is triggered and all values
transferred (trough databinding) before I peform a Save operation, however,
calling the Validate() method does not cause the validation events to be
triggered on the form itself. But it does case all data to be transferred
for the controls on the form.

Problem with indexed pixel format/
I know alot of people have the problem with indexed pixel format. I hope
someone can show me the solution to this.I am have problem with graphics

I have a datagrid on which I want to completely remove the scrollbars. At

Docked panels and Z-order problem.

I have two panels docked on the right of the form (p1 on the left=
and p2 on the right) and I want third panel to slide from right=
to left into a view between p1 and p2 (Just like Solution=
Explorer window in Visual Studio ? if it is in auto hide mode=
its slides to left when mouse is over it), but when I put my=
third panel on Controls list of the form, set it child index=
between those two and start to slide I have opposite effect ?=
the p1 is visible and p2 is hidden ? it is a way to do this=
right ???

UserControl? When I try to send a WM_CLOSE to the window, I get a
