    - Impact of Verisign Timestamping Service on ClickOnce deployed Apps We have a number of applications that are deployed using ClickOnce and we use the VeriSign timestamping service. The VeriSign timestamping service is being upgraded to use SHA-1 instead of MD5 and I need to gauge how this will affect our applications. From what I understand when the application is signed the TimeStamping Service is called to generate a hashed timestamp that is inserted in the code with the signature. When the client verifies the signature it verifies the timestamp and if it is valid it ignores the expiration date of the certificate. This means that nothing should change on the deployment side but it will affect client machines with older operating systems (Pre Win2k) that don't know how to deal with SHA1 timestamp.     - class libraries and components I'm posting here rather than in the controls group because mine is a multi-part question, only partially involving components. It's more a design issue. The environment is VS2008, BTW. I am a long-time C++ MFC consultant (who also does native code Delphi), stepping temporarily into the dotnet world to solve a specific problem. For our new system I have developed a communications interface, the details of which need not concern us here. Suffice it to say that you talk to this beast via a DLL, using messages in a fixed (binary) format. That works fine for the C++ server apps. But C# client-side programs will now also need to talk to this interface. Obviously the C# message objects have to be marshalled into this binary format. I already have the code to do a subset of the necessary marshalling developed for an earlier prototype which talked to an older version of the comms utility, using the old obsolete DDE format (it used the NDDE DLL that some kind soul published). That code was standalone classes within a single project. Now I need something that can be shared among multiple developers. So in essence, I have a bunch of classes to represent the messages, which C# apps need to use, and a bunch of functions which implement the DLL interface, which C# apps also need to use, passing the one into the other. For the sake of simplicity, it seems to me that the connection to the comms subsystem should be handled via a component which C# developers can just drop onto their form. This would be a non-visual component, which would encapsulate the DLL interface. I then thought that the classes would form an ordinary class library... but it seems like the only way for multiple C# apps to share code is via a referenced assembly. There seems to be no equivalent of a simple shared unit of code, like a Delphi unit. Also, because of the interop issues, for a C# app the DLL interface only makes "sense" when viewed via the classes implemented in the class library, so it looks like the classes really belong inside the component. C# apps certainly can't send the binary format that the DLL expects, so the component needs to do the marshaling as well. I am _really_ lost in this alien enviroment.     - How to make it use 5th version of comctl32.dll Hi, For some reason my .NET application uses the 6th version of comctl32.dll and not the 5th which, according to Microsoft, should also be present in Windows.     - Newbie question: Improving graphics rendering performance. Hello everyone, I've recently picked up a project that involves rendering 100s and potentially 1000s of individual objects onto the screen. They vary in shape, size and color and some of them involve computations before they can be rendered. I'll summarize my methodology for brevity: In the Paint event I've added code that renders my objects. The objects are stored in memory (in either arrays or collections of some sort). Each object has a "Draw" method which knows how to draw the given object. I loop through all the objects and 'draw' them onto the graphics object. So ar pretty standard stuff and to be honest I haven't really noticed a problem with the rendering (I'm double buffering). I may potentially need to render many more objects. I was hoping if someone could explain what, I imagine, must be a basic concept. Imagine I have a 25 objects that I'm rendering on the screen like: o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o Currently I'm looping through all 25 objects and adding them to the Graphics object. Suppose I only need to show the middle 9 so (x represents NOT rendered): x x x x x x o o o x x o o o x x o o o x x x x x x I could just create a Region object and mission accomplished (from a rendered point of view), however, from a algorithm point of view I'm still looping through 25 objects and calling their "draw" method. I had thought about checking if the object lies in the Region before doing my computations thereby potentially saving some cycles per object but some objects are complex and trying to determine if it lies partially in the rendering Region and partially outside it would probably take up just as many, if not more cycles. So I guess my question is am I stuck looping through all my objects and adding them to the Graphics object regardless of were they lie (in or out of the rendering region) or is there a more standard method for accomplishing this?     - MessageBox sounds behaving strangely I understand that the MessageBox icon enumeration values map to system sounds. This seems to be fairly predictable, even if the mapping sometimes don't make sense. However, I've found a scenario in which it doesn't behave correctly. In a textbox's Validating event, when I call a MessageBox.Show, the first time it plays the System's Default sound, no matter which icon value I choose. I know, that i can control the type of cell created when the DataSource property is assigned via the DataGridViewColumn.     - Thumbnails & Listviews Hi there, I'm currently developing a program to manage my image collection. The main form contains a llistview in which the location and filenames of these images are displayed. When switching the listview to Tile mode, I want to display the thumbnails of these images. My image collection contains over 4.000 images so it doesn't make any sense to populate the needed imagelist with over 4.000 thumbnails. It makes more sense to populate the imagelist with thumbnails of the images which are currently visible in the listview, but how can determine which images (listviewitems) are currently visible in the listview? Further more; how can determine changes in the visibility (after scrolling or browsing)? It should be possible, because I think that Windows Explorer (in tile mode) uses a same sort of technique, but I can't figure it out myself. Can anybody help me out?     - Sort DGV after edit, reposition grid doesn't work when user hits Enter or Tab I have a DataGridView bound to a binding source which is bound to a BindingList<obj>. The first column is [Name], and the user can edit this column. I have it set to be edited programmatically, and have DoubleClick event calling BeginEdit. When the CellEndEdit event is fired, I save the record, re-sort the binding source, go find the record, and set FirstDisplayedScrollingIndex to that row. This works great if the user clicks somewhere else on the grid or the form while he is editing. If the user hits Enter or Tab, it ends up on the next line, or one column over on the same line, and not on the line where I asked for it to be repositioned. I think what is it doing is repositioning programmatically, and then processing the Enter or Tab key and putting the user back in that location. Any ideas how I can handle this to suppress the Enter or Tab keys in this instance? Or if I am wrong in my supposition, what is wrong and how I can fix it? Thanks, RobinS.     - Assembly missing in GAC after Publish? Hi, We're using ClickOnce alreaddy more than a year for a given applicaiton, doing more than 50 publishes without any problem. Yesterday we made a minor change to one of our components (let's say with the name MyAssembly), and incremented it's version (AssemblyVersion: from 0.1.7.0 to 0.1.7.1). We did the Publish with ClickOnce, but when the users know want to run the application they get this error: "Unable to install or run the application. The application requires that assembly MyAssembly Version 0.1.7.0 be installed in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first." This is so weird, especially when knowing we had alreaddy inremented this version number without any problems in the past. Anybody has any idea? Your help will be really appreciated!     - The data area passed to a system call is too small Hi all, I'm trying to create an app that will process several files at once, dropped onto its icon in Explorer. But if I drop too many files at once (e.g. > ~30 files, which equates to 2048 bytes of command line args), the app isn't even launched and I get an alert box saying "The data area passed to a system call is too small". Now I know of several apps that can accept a huge amount of files dropped on them, like for instance Winrar. Is there a trick to increase the internal buffer size for the command line args ?     - No activity on a form... What is the easiest way of tracking whether there has been any activity on a form at all in a specific time ? I want to have a form that automatically "timeouts" after a period of no activity. I don't really want to have to go through every button, box and catch every mouse-click etc. to know that the user is actively using the form - I just want to be able to somehow have a function called which can then close the form if there has been no activity for a few minutes. I don't actually mind if the "no activity" is just on that form, or I have to rely on no-activity on the whole pc for a period of time.. I have also tried reproducing animations through GDI+ using a single transparent container to add/remove graphical controls, however, there are massive problems with controls not getting destroyed properly.     - funny look to tab with bottom alignment When a tab page is made with the tabs aligned at the bottom instead of the default top one gets a funny look and feel. The rounded parts of the tabs continues to be at the top and the square end is at the bottom. One would expect it to be inverted.     - Databinding problem - DisplayName empty I'm having some trouble getting databinding to a ListBox to work correctly. I think the collection I'm trying to bind against is a little odd, so I'm wondering if that could be part of the problem. Below is a sample of the databinding code. AxisCollection axis = GetAxisCollection() myListBox.DataSource = null; myListBox.Items.Clear(); myListBox.DisplayMember = "Attribute.Name"; myListBox.ValueMember = "Attribute.AttributeID"; myListBox.DataSource = attribs; AxisCollection is a collection which derives from List<Axis>. The Axis class looks something like: Attributes Name AttributeID DisplayNumber Attributes is a reference type property for the Axis class. After setting the DataSource property, I notice (using the debugger) that the DisplayMember property changes to an empty string. When I look at the displayed values in the listbox, they are just the name of the class (repeated for each element in the collection). Interestingly, if I change the myListBox.DisplayName to a value type (i.e. "DisplayNumber") on the class, the value is displayed correctly in the ListBox and the DisplayName remains after setting the DataSource.     - TooStripComboBox.Validate event: setting Cancel = true doesn't prevent other toolbar controls from being clicked I have a toolbar with a buncha buttons and a combo box. When the program starts, the combo opens and its mandatory that the user make a selection before continuing. I'm trying to do this with the Validate event, but its not working. If the combo is open and the user clicks a different toolbar button, my code sets Cancel = true and maintains focus on the combo box, but the Click event of the other button still gets executed.     - Form created on BackGroundThread Hi, I have some generic module that handles exceptions. simply you call it like this: "LogManager.ErrorMessage(ex)". Worked great, until we now discovered that it isn't Thread-safe. What actially happens is this: A Form is made, labels and buttons are made etc with the exception-details, but when trying to show the Form (MyExceptionForm.ShowDialog) we get an System.Security.SecurityException (see udnerneath for more info). Seems completely normal to me, because we are accessing the UI from another Thread. But how to find a solution? Thanks a lot in advance, Pieter PS 1 : I see 2 possiblities: 1. Call InvokeRequired with Invoke like we usally do when accessing controls from another thread (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171728(VS.80).aspx).     - deadlock when using waitOne in a STA thread Hi, I have the problem described bellow with the calls to WaitHandle.WaitOne causing re-entrancy on main GUI thread (STA) of a .NET application and I would like to find out: - did anybody else run into the same problem? - is it a known issue? is there a fix for it? - is there a workaround for it? - if no fix/workaround I would like to find out the complete list of messages that are being handled (dispatched by ole32.dll OLE/COM message pump) when doing WaitOne on a STA thread. The problem is: I have 2 (or more) calls pending to execute on the main gui thread (I am actually doing Invoke on some control) the first call, at some point does WaitHandle.WaitOne. at this point, if a Windows message comes to the app (like WM_POPUPSYSTEMMENU - 0x0313 ) triggered by a right-click on the task bar icon of the app the following happens: - the app processes this message - the app starts processing other pending messages - like my second invoke - at this point my app is deadlocked, because it is not supposed to enter the second call before finishing processing the first one. - also at this point the entire system is not behaving properly - for example I cannot bring up any window by clicking on the taskbar icon important note: if I would not do right click on the taskbar icon of my app, and just let it work in background, everything would be ok. After investigating this issue for a while, I found that WaitOne is not actually a blocking call when called from an STA thread. The only reference I found related to this matter in MSDN pages is here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/74169f59.aspx . Quoting from that page: "WaitHandle..::.WaitOne,WaitHandle..::.WaitAny, WaitHandle..::.WaitAll, Monitor..::.Enter, Monitor..::.TryEnter, Thread..::.Join, GC..::.WaitForPendingFinalizers, and so on are all responsive to Thread..::.Interrupt and to Thread..::.Abort. Also, if your thread is in a single-threaded apartment, all these managed blocking operations will correctly pump messages in your apartment while your thread is blocked." If the apartment state is STA this function actually creates a message loop that is processing some events (for now I have been able to identify 2 of them (WM_POPUPSYSTEMMENU and WM_ACTIVATEAPP). The problem is that these messages triggers processing of other messages in the queue (like the registered messages used for invoke in .NET ). I have attached a simplified application to demonstrate the issue. In this app I have created a thread from where I am calling multiple times the same function which is suppose to execute on the GUI thread. I have put some console prints to show that it is executing another invoke on the main thread even if it is supposed to stay in the wait.     - ProgressBar and Form loading Hello, I don't know if such question was already posted but I didn't find anything through different posts. I have the Main MDI window with a StatusBar. Inside my StatusBar there is a ProgressBar. When I click on the menu in my MDI Parent, a child form is loaded. I would like to know if there is a way to increment a progressbar value while child form is loading ? I tried to use background worker but i had some cross thread access exceptions. any ideas ?     - Redirecting to ClickOnce application fails Hello, We have implemented a few years ago a "zero touch" deployed smart client application for .NET 1.1. We ported now this application to .NET 2.0 and deploying it with ClickOnce. Because we have still .NET 1.1 clients around, we made a small ASP.NET startup application that checks host header values and redirects (Response.Redirect(...)) to the .application file in case the client has .NET 2.0 installed. Otherwise it will launch the old smart client on a web page. This all works fine as long as we start the ASP.NET startup page (let's call it StartClient.aspx) from within Internet Explorer. If we put a link to the startup page into an e-mail or just on the desktop launching the ClickOnce client with this link fails with a "Cannot Start Application" message box. The details say: SOURCES Deployment url : https://myserver/Client/StartClient.aspx ERROR SUMMARY Below is a summary of the errors, details of these errors are listed later in the log. * Activation of https://myserver/Client/StartClient.aspx resulted in exception. Following failure messages were detected: + Downloading https://myserver/Client/StartClient.aspx did not succeed. + The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden. The deployment url is the startup page and not the .application manifest file as we would expect. When checking IIS logs, we can find first a request to StartClient.aspx, second a request to https://myserver/ClickOnceClient/MyApp.application (the manifest), and a third request back to StartClient.aspx. This third request doesn't happen when we access the aspx page from within Internet Explorer (where, as mentioned before, everything works as expected). I have placed a ClickOnce installation package on a Windows 2003 server. I
am able to install from this location to a Windows XP client. However, when
I attempt to install to a Vista client, the installation is unsuccessful.
The log shows the error message "Unable to connect to the remote server. No
connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it."

Vista has no problem obtaining and displaying the publish.htm page, so I
know this client has access to the server. The server is capable of serving
up the install properly to an XP client, so I think the server is configured
properly. So what needs to be changed so I don't get this error on a Vista
client?
