    - Display Confirmation MessageBox, but only if conditions met I have an ASP.NET application with VB that I would like to use a confirmation box with, but only if certain conditions are met. In my case I would only want this msgbox to show up if a user entered a start and end range in a form, where the difference between the ranges is greater then 10. However, only the start point is required, so no confirmation box is required if the ending point is not entered. I downloaded a nice confirmation control from here: http://www.timstall.com/Code/ConfirmButton.aspx However, it is an all or nothing approach, the confirmation button always shows up when the form button is submitted. I usually started them within an object, like so: Public Class Program Private Shared _mainForm As MainForm Public Shared ReadOnly Property MainForm() As MainForm Get Return _mainForm End Get End Property Public Shared Sub Main() _mainForm = New MainForm Application.Run(MainForm) End Sub End Class I did this in order to have easy access to my mainform's components from within child forms. However it is no longer possible to do this in VS2005, It gives you a choice: Either you lose your WinXP theme support and use startup object. Or you use startup forms and have XP themes.     - stop dbconnection in InitializeComponent() Is there any way to change the order code is generated in InitializeComponent()? Or to keep designer generated ADO.NET code from trying to connect? If im dropping data adapters, connections, etc.. in the designer, as soon as the connection string is set any following code that references the connection object initiates the connection. I dont want any connection happening until I ask for it with a Fill() call. I dont want to have to wrap all my constructors with database exception handlers.     - Detach SQL Server Exress 2005 Database on Form Startup I am developing a windows application that uses a SQL Server Express 2005 database back-end. I am currently connecting using user instances and I am also using a data access layer. I am trying to implement some automatic program fixing techniques during application startup; i.e. if the previous time the user ran the application it crashed and left the database connection open, then it could safely close and re-open the connection on startup again. To reproduce this problem, I'm intentionally throwing an exception in my application so that it can't exit properly. I notice that when I use the SSEUtil.exe program, it shows the database as still being attached after a crash. I would like to be able to check to see if the database is already attached, detach it, then attach it again with my current data layer (connection objects). I have 2 questions for this problem; On the startup of my application Is there a way to check to see if a database is currently attached and... - just use it in my objects in the SQL Server Exress 2005 environment? - detach the current connection and re-attach my own instead? I don't want to have to implement the SSEUtil during install if possible. My application is going to be deployed as a Windows Service AND a Windows Application. As a service, it is going to monitor files and write the logs to the database. Then, when the user logs into the machine, it will open the client application and access the same database as the service. Since it is possible for both the service and the client app to run at the same time, is it possible for both of them to access the same database at the same time on the same machine?     - .NET Splash Screen Thread Problem I am writing a VB.NET application that has a Splash screen. .NET has autogenerated MyApplication Class. In that class OnCreateSplashScreen calls a shared property to get the Splash screen. In this shared property I instantiate the splash screen object. On this Splash screen I have a DevExpress MarqueeProgressBarControl or just in short a progress bar control. When I start up my application I get an exception: "Cross-thread operation not valid" When I debug this I notice something strange 1) .NET Calls OnCreateSplashScreen and in turn my shared property, that instantiates the splash screen, on one thread. 2) .NET then shows the splash screen on a different thread! I tried to show my SplashScreen form as a regular form (not as a splash screen) and it worked fine. So my conclution is: The progress bar I am using is obviously creating a timer that is associated with a different thread than the progress control it self because it is instantiated with one thread and shown with another. This timer is then sending OnTimer to the progress bar and I get the exception. So my questions is: Why does .NET use two threads to Create and Activate a Splash screen? I would think a form object should be instantiated and shown on the same thread so I am surpriced that the .NET framework (or the VB framework) is doing it this way.     - Array of table adapters? By the looks of it, the design of the table adapter makes it very hard to deal with a bunch of them in a generic way. Let's say I have a typed data set with 10 tables and relations between then. Am I supposed to hard code every fill and update for each table? Ideally I would do this: for (int i = 0; i < adapters.Count; i++) adapters[i].Update(tables[i]); or this: for (int i = 0; i < adapters.Count; i++) adapters[i].Fill(tables[i]); But that doesn't seem to be feasible.     - Is is possible for the owner form to be from a different thread? I am working on a multi-threaded application. Say I create a Form1 on the main thread and call form1.ShowDialog. This Form1 is only displaying status information. There is no real user interaction going on. I do all the background processing on a worker thread and I only update Form1 using Invoke commands. If I create a form on the worker thread is there a way to make Form1 the owner of the new form? Also, if I want to display a MessageBox on the worker thread is there a way to make Form1 the owner so the MessageBox belongs to the main form and doesn't get lost or buried? I was trying to do: newForm.ShowDialog(form1); and MessageBox.Show(form1, "message"); With .NET 2.0 I get the "cross-thread operation not valid" error.     - Text in drop down list of combo box is not visible I am unable to read any text displayed in the drop down list of a combo box. Once an item is selected, the text is displayed in the text box area. I have tried changing all the text properties for the combo box to no avail. Other (non winform apps) display fine on my system.     - Control invoking w/o creating a delegate Hi, I'm building a smart device windows app that performs some background operation and that requires updating a progress bar. Since I need to use the progress bar thread, I call MyProgressBar.Invoke() method where I pass a delegate object. The syntax is quite painfull since I need to create a custom delegate for each modification of any control.     - Minimizing and then Maximizing my application prevents windows from appearing! Hi All - I have a problem that I cannot for the life of me solve. I hope someone can help me out. .NET 2.0 / C# I have an application that is a touch screen application, and as such, I have a main window that is borderless and its initial WindowState is set to Maximized. On top of this main window, I have 3 additional windows that are placed in specific positions calculated using the Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds. All of these windows have their Owner property set to be the main window. (Not sure if this info is relevant) Because I do not have a form border, I offer a "Minimize" button that when clicked sets the WindowState of my main window to FormWindowState.Minimized. When the user maximizes the application (either by ALT-TAB or clicking it on the task bar), it maximizes fine, but ---sometimes--- dialogs and forms that I Show() will no longer appear. I believe that the dialog did indeed show, but it is behind my main form. This I find wierd because on every dialog and form that I use, it's owner is set to be the main window. Further, and what is even more confusing, is that when this strange problem occurs, not only can I not bring up any dialog from my application, but I can no longer "ALT-TAB" any other application (i.e.: Windows Explorer, IE, etc.) to bring it into view. When I select it via ALT-TAB or by the task bar, it gets selected, but nothing seems to be able to appear on top of my main window. I am lost and it seems that Windows itself is having issues on bringing a window or application to the top of the Z order. Does anyone have any suggestions?     - Problem with form control's repaint after migration to .Net 1.1 I have a large application with the complicated UI. The main form is filled with the dockable custom controls. it works like this: custom controls deriving from Panel was created and serves as a placeholders, regular panel with some enhanced functionality. The user control consisting of regular .Net controls (labels, buttons, datepickers) was created and dropped on the custom Panel control. The application was built with the .net 1.0. Currently, I'm upgrading the application to run on the .Net 1.1. Everything is fine, but some of the custom controls are not getting repainted at proper times (minimize/maximize/another form over it, so on). Each control is designed as a separate class, with the Invalidate() triggering OnPaint() method and the proper repaint code in the overriden OnPaint(). Like I said, everything works fine on the 1.0. Some additional info: not all of the controls are not repainted. Another control (TabControl) that was also derived from Panel refreshes just fine. The code from the OnPaint() is rather long, that's why I'm not posting it. But it works fine on the .net 1.0. The testing machine has the same configuration (XP SP2). Please advise. An additional piece of information. At one time, I used Application.DoEvents() to repaint the invalidated area. Once I converted the app into 1.1, the execution of the program alsways stopped during the execution of the Application.DoEvents. Later I changed it to Refresh(0 and it works fine now.     - User Control's childcontrols have wrong size Hi, I have a c# usercontrol that embeds two buttons as children. The buttons are not normal visual studio buttons but usercontrols themselves made with vb.net if that matters... At runtime the control works ok everywhere and the size of the childer is Size(114,48) In design-time, the user control works in many Visual Studio projects, but not on one project! The child buttons are way too big at design time. Something like Size(190,76). I actually set the Size of the child controls in the contructor of the user control to Size(114,48), but something overrides it in designer to larger size. This is annoying since of course the form does look funny at design time with too large buttons inside a user control. Hi, From MSDN documentation, it implies that any cross ui thread calls will result in InvalidOperationException when one tries to access a UI object from a non-creation thread. I have a situation where someone is executing some code in a thread pool (Threading.IsThreadPoolThread is true and so if Form.InvokeRequired is true) and yet when it calls // this.mainTabControl.InvokeRequired is true TabControl tc = this.mainTabControl.TabPages[i]; it does not throw the InvalidOperationException, why?     - Accessing an Exchange/Outlook e-mail from our application ... We have a WinForms v2 application whereby users need to take incoming customer e-mails and place them into the customer's record in SQL Server 05 using drag and drop. We've finally managed to get most of the DnD issues resolved. Now, we need to figure out how to best get a handle to the e-mail messages. The way we see this working is the user will have their Outlook client running on their desktop, along with the WinForms application (it's a customer service app). The user will open and read the e-mail - to see who it's from, subject, where it should be stored, etc., etc. - then "drag and drop" the message on to the Customer's record in our application. We have never programatically worked with Exchange, or Outlook, before and are curious where best to start? I'd say we need to get to fields like Sender, Subject, Date & Time, and the Body.     - Installer Dialog problem Iâ??m trying to create an installer for an application. The installer has a custom dialog with two checkboxes determining if shortcuts should get created on the desktop and in the Start menu. Regardless what I do, and what I check the shortcuts always get created in both. In the User interface Setup I have: Checkboxes (A): Checkbox1Label Desktop Checkbox1Property CHECKBOXA1 Checkbox1Value Unchecked Checkbox1Visible True In the FileSystem/Userâ??s Desktop I have the shortcut defined and the properties are: AlwaysCreate False Condition CHECKBOXA1=Checked Transitive True I have tried all permutations of the condition I can think of (Checked, 1, 0, nothing) even named the checkboxes differently.     - Drag & Drop ... getting a handle to the file that was dropped. We are attempting to allow our users to use Drag n Drop onto a control in a WinForms v2 application. Within the control_DragDrop() event handler we want to determine the name and location for a file that was dropped onto this control. We are moderately familiar with performing DnD from within our application - we do this between various controls within the app itself - but, a lot to learn when it comes to DnD and external files from outside our application. We are successfully determining that the user is trying to drop a file onto the control with the following code in the DragEnter() event handler: if (e.Data.GetDataPresent( DataFormats.FileDrop )) { Console.WriteLine("A file was dropped ......."); } What we're trying to do now, is create a File object (or something similar that you might recommend) using the file the user has dropped so that we can get to its contents, file name, date it was created, etc., etc. Just not sure how to get the handle to the file??     - Word Wrapping ListView ToolTips Mostly I'm happy with the default behavior of the ListView ToolTips in the app I'm working on. In detail view, they display the subitem text if it's too wide for its column. What's silly, however, is that the ListView's ToolTips won't word wrap if the text is very long... they'll happily exceed the screen width, in fact. Using some interop with SendMessage, I can send LVM_GETTOOLTIPS to the ListView's Handle, then send TTM_SETMAXTIPWIDTH to the returned ToolTip handle. I can even verify that the width I'm setting is being set is being stored: on a second SendMessage to the ToolTip of TTM_SETMAXTIPWIDTH, the value I set is being returned. So everything looks good. Except... it doesn't actually work. The ToolTip still won't wrap the text, which does contain plenty of spaces. That's a little puzzling, so I thought I'd pose some questions here. First, would there be more than a single ToolTip control associated with a ListView, so that LVM_GETTOOLTIPS is perhaps returning something other than the control shown when hovering over subitems? And if that's the case, how do I get the correct handle? Second, if I am indeed sending TTM_SETMAXTIPWIDTH to the correct control, why wouldn't the setting be respected?     - Datagridview databinding/refresh I have two questions. 1. Is there a way to keep the datagridview datasource constantly bound to a sql db? So that as soon as a change takes place in the db by any user, it is updated on all screens. If so, how is that done? If not, what is the best practice to perform this type of function? 2. In refrence to above, I have a timer that refreshes the data every 3 minutes. One problem here is the screen flickers when it refreshes. How would i resolve this?     - Disabling rows in datagridview Hi, I am new to the forms world and have a silly doubt. I have form with a DataGridview and an "Add" button. When the user clicks on the add button, one row gets added to the datagrid. Now I want that when the user hits the "Add" button, then new row should be added and all the previous rows should be disabled for selection/editing. What I want to do is to change the update location from client side. I am deploying the updates manually meaning I am creating manifest files by hand. Forexample think of 3 servers.     - Repaint order of invalidated child controls Hi, I'm developing a hex editor control, and it displays the hex and raw views into the document using a number of subcontrols. This is great, but now I'm seeing a bug when I scroll my control very fast. This, however, would be OK if I could just get Windows to redraw the least recently repainted control first (the flicker would become unnoticable). The problem is that this doesn't seem to be possible. The order in which I issue Control.Invalidate calls is irrelevant!     - Question regarding MDI Hello, I am VERY new to WindowsForms but VERY eager to learn. I am in the process of creating an MDI application to manage High Sensitivity Customers within our organization. I am working on the first form which will host the login controls to the application. I noticed that when I change the type of the form to an isMDIcontainer to TRUE the background color of the application changes to dark grey. No matter what I do I cannot change the background color. This is really ugly. I even tried a background color however, when I change the controls background to transparent, they are wrapped with that dark grey color instead.     - ListView ownerdraw column headers I have a question for anyone who might be able to help... I am in the process of building a custom listview, and am dealing with sorting, and wanting to use the asc/desc sort indicators in the column header... i have tried setting the parent's SmallImageList property and using those images as sort order indicators, but the ListView items also try to use those images, which screw up the way the ListView renders in some situations. Drawing the column header is an easy enough way around this, but I am running into trouble with dealing with the mouse over behaviour. I attempt to access the MousePosition, and then test if the bounds of the columnheader contain that point. This works just fine - however... When you are moving from one column to another, from right to left (this is the important part), the rightmost column (the one you just came from) still evaluates the e.Bounds.Contains(this.PoiintToClient(Control.MousePosition)) expression to 'True'... Additionally, in the same Right to left motion, the columns' "hover" seems to be off by one (delayed) as you mouse over... So, if we have 4 columns {0,1,2,3} and we are moving Right to Left, without leaving the vertical bounds of the ListView's column header... If the mouse cursor is over column... [3] --> [3] is "highlighted" [2] --> [3] is "highlighted" [1] --> [3] and [2] are "highlighted" [0] --> [3] [2] [1] are all highlighted. I don't understand entirely why this might be. Since it doesn't exhibit any of this behaviour at all when you move over the columns from Left to Right, I am guessing that the column header might "virtually" extend all the way to the left, or something like that... Is there a better way to determine whether or not the mouse is hovering over the specific bounds of the column header? Find the ColumnHeader OwnerDraw code below...
