    - binary serialization of application files I have a web service application inwhich I serialize,compress, and encrypt data. Upto this point the data I work with exposes its own serialize method so I can both serialize and deserialize the data from and to it parent application. Now I am interested in serializing other files, in particular large media files .wmv, .wma. I guesss this question would also extend to how to serialize and deserialize data to and from power point, project, word files, etc. What I am after is the procedure and code for serializeing application files such a .wmv. Here is where I am at present, Dim MyObject as Object = "C:\MedialFiles\BigVideo.wmv" or BigFile.doc or BiggerFiler.xls,etc Dim DataByteArray() as byte Dim ms as New MemoryStream Dim bf as BinaryFormatter bf.serialize(ms,MyObject) ms.position=0 ms.write(DataByteArray,0,cint(ms.length)) ms.close At this point, I would compress and encrypt the byte array and send it to my web server for storage. Where I am confused is when I recall the data from my web service and deompress/decrypt the data back to the origional application file that can be played by Window Media Player. Here is where I am stuck, I have just downloaded the bytearray from the web service dim ms as new MemoryStream dim bf as binaryformatter ms.read(databytearray,0,cint(databytearray.lenght) Here is where I am confused. I need to be able to deserialize the recalled data into something that my application, in this case Window Media Play can open and play.     - Code for finding manufacturer serial number for hard drive in C# Hi, If you understand the subject of my post that means you would know why i want this. Please dont give me the code for Volume number as i am talking about manufacturer serial number. I am working on C# and I know about win32_PhysicalMedia to retrieve the manufacturer serial number but that does not work for Win 2000 and I want something that works for Win 2000. Even if there is no solution in C# but you have something in C or J# that could help me that would be great too.     - Running a winform from Scheduler I have a winform that starts from the scheduler. It performs a task, prints a status message on the screen on waits for the operator to terminate the program by clicking on the exit icon in the upper right corner. There is only one problem.     - dropdown filter in datagrid shows null-value Situation: Datagrid with two dropdownlists and some other boring values The list are: 'company' and 'project' What I was trying after picking a company then update the 'project' dropdown (filter the dataview that holds the values) with only the projects of that specific company. If I do this in the a specific row, all the other rows (with other companies) the project-dropdown will display a null value. I understand WHY, but can someone tell me how to prevent this?     - PATH in Debug mode Hi, in my win application I've a file named myFile.xml at the root of my application: in debug mode, when I try to read this file, the runtime application searches it in the path bin/debug... and it doesn't find it because there isn't there, so I've used the function: Path.GetFullPath("../../myFile.xml") thanks to this function it works, but when I try to deploy the application, it doesn't work anymore, because path is different...     - data access tier for win form Hi, I want to create a data access logic component for a win form app... I saw some example DAL components in web and groups. And I am surprised to see that all methods of DAL component examples return a dataset. For ex., we have a GetEmployeeById method on the DAL comp. And it returns a dataset containing a table with the employee info (fields) that we requested by Id. Is this a valid approach in designing a DAL component. I mean, my question is what happens when the user navigates from an employee to a different one. Every time a new employee is accessed, a new dataset is returned by DAL layer. Does this create a dataset inflation in the app.? What happens to old datasets then? Should they be disposed before navigating to a new employee... Then another problem is databinding. You can not use visual data binding facilities of Win forms because You are returned a new dataset each you request a new employee from the DAL... So, you have to databind in code every time the user navigate to a new employee record.. Is there anyone with experience on this subjects...     - Problems when toggling between MDI child and owned child window I'm developing an Windows Forms application using VS.NET 2003 and .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP SP 1. The application is an MDI application where the user can make an MDI child form 'floating'. The child form is made 'floating' by setting its MdiParent property to null and then setting its Owner property to the parent form like this: Form form = ActiveMdiChild; if (form != null) { form.MdiParent = null; form.Owner = this; } If the user wants to make the form 'non-floating' again, the MdiParent property is reset in the child form like this: MdiParent = Owner; I experience two problems in the application: 1. When a child form is made 'floating' and then toggled back to 'non-floating', I cannot activate any of the MDI child forms by clicking with the mouse in the child forms client area (but it works if I click on the child forms title or border). I found a workaround for this in this newsgroup (thanks Ying-Shen Yu!). 2. If I set the MdiList property to true for the Window menu in the MDI parent, I get an unhandled NullReferenceException in Unknown Module after a child form is toggled to 'floating' and back and then dragging the MDI child forms around a few times.     - Form Security - Disable controls on a form As part of our security implementation, we want to disable some controls on some forms for some groups. This information will be kept in a database. when the form will load the security information will be read and controls on the form will be disabled or enabled depending on the security information kept in the database. After a control has been disabled on a form, we want to prevent any code on the form being able to enable the control again. However, if I send them an update, it tells you have an instance of the program installed, remove it by going to add / remove. How does one copy a custom object onto the clipboard and then retrieve it? I can do this with standard types and collections of standard types, but if I use a custom object the retrieved objects are always null.     - MessageBox problem Hello, When I use MessageBox.Show(owner, ...) to display a modal dialog box the 'bong' sound is made immediately but the message box is not painted. For some reason, pressing the ALT key will cause the message box to appear. The application contains around 15 windows forms, spread over all the screen space on three monitors. I know that the message box is not being painted behind one of these forms as I deliberatlely left space on the screen where it would appear and it appeared when I pressed ALT, but not before. So it is not an issue with the Topmost property of the forms. Any ideas? The problem occurs with every message box in the application. I think it is related to the amount of painting going on since if I minimise all the forms in the application except the one that will display the message box it works.     - winform fails to set size correctly! There must be something happening behind the scenes to "help" me, but I've got a real problem. I've embedded an AxWebBrowser directly onto a form, and I'm trying to set the size of the form to accomodate the contents. The width sets to a predefined number of pixels (816) correctly, but I can't get the height to work. The code setting the height is below. You can see what I'm doing is trying to set the form to be so tall that there's no vertical scrollbar. I do that by asking for the size of the scrollHeight, and growing the form so the client area is as large as the value of scrollHeight. But this code fails. The value of desiredHeight comes back with 7409, and the currentHeight is 293, for a delta of 7116 and a targetHeight of 7436. But when I set "this.Height = 7436" the form only grows to to 1036. That number is always the same. My screen resolution is 1280 * 1024. Does that affect the maximum possible size of a winform? Would I get the growth I need if I rendered this offscreen?     - employee application - disconnected model problem. I want to write an application for employee tracking. But, I am confused with the disconnected model of ADO.NET ... It was easy with Delphi's connection oriented approach... Selecting all the employees into a dataset at start-up seems to be time-consuming and unnecessary.     - Has the EnableVisualStyles bug hit me? Hello All, I have a .NET application running on Windows XP. I have quite a few forms, some modal and some modeless. Once in a while we get a wierd exception in the application and most of the time the code is transferred to the top level 'ThreadExceptionEventHandler'. It is difficult to get the information on actual exception. Most of the time it seems to say "External component has thrown an exception' and the source of the exception object is 'System' Doing a bit of searching on the internet, I came across the known bug in EnableVisualStyles( ). I do not call the Application.EnableVisualStyles at all. but I do call Application.DoEvents (this was suggested as a fix somewhere) I tried looking for the comctl32.dll. In the System32 folder the dll has version 5.82. One of the articles on the internet said, XP uses 6.0 by default. Where would this dll be? I do get rounded corners for my form's title bar, does this mean that my application is using visual style? If yes where is it getting set? Is it the default under Windows XP (SP2)? Can somebody direct me to information which will lead to better understanding of visual styles and the related bug.     - Displaying a regular windows app inside a control window What I am trying to do is launch a windows application from within my WinForms application. Once this is done I want to have this external application behave like a control on my WinForms app (no longer appears in status bar, no frame etc.). I remember seeing a Code Project article describing how to do this, but hours of googling for it has not turned up anything. Does anyone reading this remember the article? While I can launch an application using System.Diagnostics, find a windows handle using an API call I wouldn't have a clue how to modify it. I want to have a tooltip for each item in the combobox. I know how to make it work for a listbox, but not for a combobox.     - Double buffer a form Is there some trick to double buffer a whole form without having to subclass every single control on it to make each control double buffered? I've noticed that when I resize my form the controls on it starts flicking so much it's not even funny. I thought I could be clever and do something like this foreach(Control c in this.Controls){ // Set the value of the double-buffering style bits to true. c.SetStyle(ControlStyles.DoubleBuffer, true); } but that won't work since the SetStyle method is declared as protected in Control. We wasted a couple of days debugging a slow list view control in .NET and we realized that if you try to update the listview's listitems from a class other than the form on which the listview is placed, it will get REAL slow!     - C# namespace for SQLServer connection dialog et al. Are there any C# namespaces that encapsulate the "Connect to SQL Server" dialog that appears when you launch the Query Analyzer?     - Maximising window using shortcut I created a windows form (using J#), set the BorderStyle to FixedDialog, and disabled the maximise box. All I wanted was that the user should not be able to change the size of the window. After my application was built, I created a shortcut to it. In the shortcut properties, I set the Run: property to "Maximised" from "Normal Window". When I started the application from the shortcut, it was maximised. I could neither resize the window, nor "restore" it (as expected). I think this behavior needs to be looked into. It has 3 child forms and each form contains 4 panels each. Besides this I have a login form which is not the MDI children . At run time the application start with a class (which ensures that there is only one instance of application), then control comes to login form and then comes to MDI parent form. I am using this smartphone device;

am having problem deploying smartphone app from vs 2005. The error I get is
that this version of activesync is not supported. I have downloaded and
installed version 3.8 but still get the same error. I was not able to deploy
using vs 2003 as well. The device works well otherwise and syncs fine with
outlook via activesync. I am using Norton Internet Security 2004, in case
that has any effect.

How can I deploy my smartphone app to the SDA device?

to post the question. Check to see if other people are experiencing the
same bug. If they are not then report a bug and try including as much
information as possible. Unfortunately Microsoft's VS.NET has a long
history of having deployment issues both to PDA's and their emulator
