Broken solution
Hi
I tried installing and deploying some of the application templates in WSS
v3. Most of then worked however i tried to deploy one of them using the
command line and it errored out. I see it in the list of solutions however I
cannot delete it.
Any ideas ?

Hi All,
I made some improvement regarding restoring site from .fwp files. There were
some 150+ .fwp backup files (each averaging around 20-30 MB) which were
numbered in sequential fashion. I ran smigrate program to restore these
files into SharePoint Portal Server 2003 blank site (created by using
SharePoint services which comes along with portal server).
The restoration starts fine (takes around 40 minutes) performing various
tasks and then comes to a section where it has to upload files into the
site. It successfully uploads around 2000+ files before encountering a
problem. There around 16000+ files which needs to be uploaded (according to
smigrate console message). Smigrate keeps out putting this message "Web
server is busy. Please try again. Retrying, bad file <lists the file name>"
This message keeps repeating for rest of the 14000+ files (I think so..never
had a chance to verify this). It then proceeds with successful site
restoration message before coming out of the smigrate.
Nobody is using the web server as I am restoring this site to a dedicated
server with plenty of HDD space and 1 GB RAM. Smigrate is the only program
working with the web server for site restoration. I also checked the site
settings on the web server and everything looked fine. I have set the
connections to unlimited in the IIS.
I haven't applied Service Packs to SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or
SharePoint services. Do you think the above problem was because SP was not
applied? Or was something else wrong? Can somebody please guide me on this?

remove delete permission from contributor (wiki site)
I am starting up a wiki site and I was wondering if anyone has figured
out a way to allow people to add and modify content without allowing
permission to delete said content. I am worried about someone getting
mad and going through and deleting all of my pages one day. It seems
foolish of MS not to have taking this into consideration.
The idea of wiki is to allow everyone to modify content freely, but I
don't want someone to be able to destroy all of that content in a fit

Data View: how to follow lookup field link to document?

My scenario: I'm on Sharepoint 2007 Portal Server. I have a custom
list, HRPolicy. In this list there is a lookup field - policy - that
lets the user select a document from a document library, HRPolicies.
On a page I have added a Data View Web Part to show the information
from the list HRPolicy. By default the value of the field policy is
formated as text only. I would like to have it as a hyperlink that
displays the document when click, exactly as if you were to add a list
directly as a web part. How can this be accomplished?
I have tried to use the ddwrt:URLLookup using the GUID of the list,
the field and the ID, but this doesn't work. In details I have the
exact same problem as this guy:

Seems that this worked on Sharepoint 2003, but not 2007.
I would guess that it is really simply procedure, but somehow I cannot
figure out how to get it done. I currently only have the name of the
document, in the policy lookup field. If I could get the ID I could
make the link by going
http://server/HRPolicies/Forms/DispForm.aspx?ID={@ID}&RootFolder=*
(where {@ID} would be the ID, but I do not know how to get this.

Can't publish Infopath form...
Hi Everyone!
I posted that question to microsoft.public.infopath group but with no
luck.interest. Maybe here I'll get more... ;]
I'd like to publish my first form template to Sharepoint but two
things appear:
1. After creating a simple form i Infopath I'm trying to publish it
to
"Sharepoint server with or without Form Services" (WSS 3.0 don't have
these services as far as I know...). When asked for URL of my site i
tried various verisions of URL (http://server/ or http://server/sites/ThatSite/
or http://server/sites/ThatSite/FormLib/Forms/AllItems.aspx or used
IP
address of the server). I get questioned for the user/password,
give'em (with farm administrator rights) and still I cannot
connect :/
"The URL is incorrent"
What format of URL is correct here?
2. If I'm trying to add a new template from the Sharepoint (in
FormLibrary i click New->Document and have the opportunity to choose
XSN file) it also gets strange. Nevermind if I chose my simple form
or
those template exaples from Office12 folder I cannot publish them
because:
"The Element 'comment' is used but not defined/declared in DTD
schema". I dont recollect using on purpose anything like 'comment'
myself. What;s that?
I tried to save my template to source files and after searching
through them i found only one place where word 'comment' appears:
In file: upgrade.xsl
At the begining:

Sharepoint Error
I am running MOSS '07 on a windows 2003 server. After troubleshooting and
rebuilding a portion of a site, the following error started coming up. It's
currently spamming itself about once a minute. If you guys have any ideas as
to what this issue might be or a fix for this issue It would be greatly

Missing AllItems.aspx contents
I did not think this was possible from GUI, but a user managed to delete the
ListViewWebPart in the PlaceHolderMain(Custom) so that the AllItems.aspx
page of a Library has nothing (no web part, ergo no Toolbar, no View:
selection) and no way to undo that I can find. He was simply trying to
delete folders he created. I know enough to open SharePoint Designer, look
at the page and compare it to another Library to see what is missing and
tell you it is the ListViewWebPart in the PlaceHolderMain(Custom) spot, but
I don't know enough to get it back. (Just learning SPD on my own)
If I add the Library web part (Edit Page, Add Web Part) from the GUI like I
might add to the home page to display the Library, I don't get the View:
drop down menu. (btw, there are no Closed web parts). If I copy the
ListViewWebPart from my new view (see next) from in SharePoint Designer, I
just get my new view not the original All Items that I want back.
I created another AllItems which got named AllItems1.aspx, so the site users
can get to the documents. Two issues with that view. It does not show the
folders that still exist (just docs), and "View:" drop down does not show
All Items (the original) as a selection though it does show Explorer View as
a selection. (Explorer View does show the folders that still exist.)
How to revert All Items aspx page to original state?

UpdatedConcurrencyException in WSS 3.0
I'm getting errors in my trace logs (and in the application event log) about
a concurrency exception. It happens every 5 minutes and has been doing so
for quite awhile it seems.
There is a critical exception:
The Execute method of job definition

Several site owners brought to my attentions that number of hits displayed
on usage reports are correct to ASPX files, but for PDF and MS Office files
(e.g. Word) the numbers are not right. For example we know for a fact that
several users viewed Doc file but it shows 0 hits for it.
I did a â??controlledâ?? experiment myself. I created 3 files in document
library â?? ASPX, PDF and DOC. For next several days I was opening each one
equal number of time, using different accounts and recorder what I did it
each day. No one except me and 2 test accounts has access to test files.
When I looked at the usage report, the hits for ASPX were matching what I
did, but for DOC and PDF they were â??god knows whatâ??.
I have WSS 2.0 and SP Portal Server 2003. I've tried both
/_layouts/1033/usageDetails.aspx and FrontPage. No difference.

Versions in WSS are not working correct
Hello everybody,
I have a problem at a customers in Shrepoint Portal Server 2003 in a
document library of the WSS:
- We have the Versioning activated
- But there is a version of an Excel document created by a user who was
definitely not in tha company at this time
- Although is a version missing of a user who checked the document out,
saved it and checked it in again, that means all of his changings were lost.
- The Eventlog says nothing at this time
Does anyone have an idea how this could happen?

Having a list linked to another list?
I know you can create a "lookup" link field in a list which works great.
But if I have two lists and one list has id, name, address and another list
has id, salesperson, number of calls. Is there a way to list the salesman
list but instead of displaying "id", display the corresponding name from the
other list? This a sharepoint designer solution?

Seeing activities from another site?
In designing our company WSS 3 site, I have a "home" site and a "products"
site for product announcements and information. When I post a products
announcement on that site, is there a way for this to also display on the
home site? I've noticed in designing that getting "too deep" is something
that I have to becareful about. Otherwise people won't know what is going
on.
Any recommendations? Should I post all announcements, even for other sites,
on the home site or should is there a way to post announcements on my
product site and see it also on the home site? I know alerts are an option
but I also don't want too many emails flying around for every change or
update. Any thoughts?

Problem accessing Sharepoint from Internet
Hi, I am having problem acessing my sharepoint site from the internet.
IF I put in https://companyname.com/default.aspx it works fine but if i just
use https://companyname.com it asks me to log in once I log in it give me
error: "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"
The page redirects fine on inside of the network.

Can't edit images in picture library - please help!
Hi!
We are using WSS 2003, Office 2003, and IE 6.0.
In explorer view, I cannot open jpgs. I used to be able to do so in WPFV
(windows picture and fax viewer). SP tries to use PM (Picture manager),
though my default viewer is WPFV. PM shows an error due to group policy. It
can't open pix in a picture library.
In all documents view I can open jpgs in the browser
Once a few folders into the tree, I cannot switch views from explorer to
"all documents" without getting an error.
Could you recommend a way around this problem?

Wiki Docuement Templates
My company is using the SharePoint WSS v3 wiki functionality to
capture corporate knowledge. We have have experts, who know a things
about things, write "articles" in a wiki document library.
One requirement was to give the experts article templates from which
to choose from when writing the articles.
I'm posting this topic to get opinions from people who know what will
work to meet this requirement.
My way was to add javascript to the CreateWebPage.aspx file which
redirects the user to a custom_CreateWebPage.aspx based on the
requested url. The user only gets redirected if they are navigating
to a specific wiki doc lib. I did this because while I was able to
implement a feature that redirects the user to a
custom_EditCreateWebPage.aspx, I could never get the feature to work
for the CreateWebPage.aspx
To get an article template for the user, in the
custom_CreateWebPage.aspx, I added javascript which called a web
service I created that returned a string containing an Article
Template. Next, I used javascript to write the string on the Wiki
Text field.
This works, but I am concerned that I made it too complicated or that
basically there is a better way.

stsadm vs sql server backup
Running WSS 2.0 and SQL Server 2000. We have a simple setup, one server, one
database, and everything under one site collection. In terms of disaster
recovery, I'm trying to figure out the difference between backing up using
stsadm and creating one backup file every night or just using the sql server
backup. The sql server backup runs every night regardless. From what I've
read it appears that I should be able to restore everything from the sql
server backup, is that true? Do I miss anything going with the sql server
backup vs stsadm?
What about 3rd party web parts? Does stsadm do anything this these or do
these have to be reinstalled?
Any insights would be appreciated.

E-mail Notifications
Good Morning,
I've got a WSS 3.0 server running on Windows 2003 R2 (SP1), if a user
subscripts to Alerts they correctly recieve an e-mail from the server
informing them they have correctly setup an alert. However when adding a new
user/changing document security settings, etc the user recieves and error
stating that the operation completed successfully but the e-mail
notification could not be sent.
I've checked the Application Log and have the following errors each time an
attempt is made to send an e-mail:

WIKI best practices
We installed the Sharepoint WIKI on our intranet. I would like to have
some policies/procedures for following best practices before all users
who have access to it start adding/modifying pages in a random way.
Can anyone point me to resource that will help me organize things
around WIKI better?
PS: We already have 143 WIKI pages in place. I would not like to spend
time reorganizing existing information, instead would like to have
some procedures in place for the future.

FBA breaks sometimes
This is just a general notice/warning to folks using Forms-Based
Authentication (FBA) -- changes to the Authentication Provider through
Central Administration causes changes to web.config that can break FBA
and cause the dreaded "Unknown Error" on log-in.
This gave me hours of headaches trying to figure out. The solution is
to make a backup copy of your web.config after you get FBA working,
then be sure to do a test log-in to the site any time you make a
change to the Authentication Provider for the web application.
Central Admin seems to make changes to web.config without making a
backup, so look at the file date if you start getting Unknown error on
log-in.
I've seen this on two machines now, so I don't think it's just my
environment.

Creating a custom list by importing a spreadsheet
We are using Windows SharePoint Services Version 3. We have Microsoft Office
2003 with SP2. When I am trying to create a custom list by importing a
spreadsheet the process completes without any errors. However, when I go to
customize the columns, the first column, the "Title" is set as a "Single line

Unsafe Control Exception when using SPWebPartManager.GetClassResourcePath
I've been fighting a problem for the last couple of days concerning an
UnsafeControlException that occurs when calling
SPWebPartManager.GetClassResourcePath. Any ideas on the source of
this issue. I'm new to WSS 3.0 so it's probably something silly.

Redirect sharepoint webapp to defined managed path
I have a web app called portal.mysite.com I want that site redirected to
portal.mysite.com/home. I have tried setting the home dir in IIS to the path
which just breaks both sites. When I type in the portal.mysite.com I get
prompted for a username and password but then a 404. I really want to do this

WSS vs. MOSS code comparison?
I would like to install WSS for my users, but am getting a great deal of flak
from infosec folks. They have approved MOSS, but are in the dark about WSS.
I've argued that WSS is very likely a subset MOSS, (like SQL Express is to
SQL2005) and should be approved on that basis. Was I telling the truth? Can
any MVPs provide authoritative information?

AD in SharePoint problem
Hello ,first i'm sorry about my poor english!
I use SharePoint create a site,and then i should unite a web site which used
asp.net dev by us at past.I set the both tow site use the AD authentication
on IIS. In IE6,It's OK ! But in IE7,it still pop-up the Windows Login
Form,require login.I don't know why?May be the IE7 need some set?Somebody can

MOSS 2007 Site Navigation Option Missing
I am trying to create a MOSS 2007 site following the SharePoint Server 2007
Help and How-to > Site management > Creating and deleting sites > Create a
subsite under the existing site. Our create site screen does not have step 8
"In the Navigation section, select whether you want the new subsite to be

Transferring WSS site to separate partition
Let me start with the fact that I am no expert in the field of IT
infrastructure, networking, etc. I am a web developer that has had
the opportunity to explore WSS on Windows Server 2003. I have a
running site on the C partition but 90% of the space on the hard drive
is on the second partition (D).
Does anyone know how difficult it would be to clone the site and move
it over to that partition? Or if that is even possible?

Approval function and workspaces
Hi,
When a document is in pending mode? it seems that I can't make a workspace
for that document? I get the following error: Value does not fall within the
expected range.
When the document is approved then their is no problem.
I think that's weird I want to work on a document until it's ready and then
from the workspace to the site and get an approval.
Are there any solutions?

WSS, SSL and Document Libraries
We are having issues with WSS and SSL...we have WSS on two web servers
and load balanced with the ssl cert and ssl termination running on the
load balancer. All traffic to the WSS site is converted from http to
https.
The users can not download/open documents from any libraries.
So far no workaround...
In addition, they can't upload documents to the root of a document
library
(ie. not a sub folder). However, we've found a work around that if
they
upload a document to a subfolder, they can then (during the same
sessin)
upload a document to the root.
The only thing we can notice is when we view the source of the page,
the
"RootFolder=" value on the querystring is blank when it doesn't work,
but
when it does work (after the work around), it says
"RootFolder=[LibraryName]"
Any ideas? I scoured the newsgroups as much as possible
and didn't see anything that hinted at the answer.
I saw a previous post about this from a few years back and the answer
was the WSS didn't support SSL termination, but that was pre
sp2....this should be handled now. Can anyone please help. Would be
greatly appreciated.

Allow All Authenticated Users in "Active Directory Account Creation Mode"
Hello,
I'm using Active Directory Account Creation Mode and for some reason,
I can't allow All authenticated users to access my site. The form is
just simply disabled (greyed) and defaults to "No".
I simply would like the form to be enabled so that I can switch it to
"Yes".
Any help would be much appreciated. I have been looking for hours for
a solution without succeeding.

I know it's possible to open up two separate document libraries in
explorer view to copy/move files, but I'm wondering if there is a way

Get 404 with Web Services when multiple sites running on the same box
Hello. I have an application which access a List on a Windows
Sharepoint Services site.
The client and the server are on the same machine. When I browse to
the URL (http://localhost/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx) from the machine with
IE I can see the services listed. However, when I try to call the web
service from code I get a 404.
Interestingly, it starts working if I shut down all other web sites
running on IIS. I think that what is happening is that it doesn't
know which site's lists I'm trying to access. The sites are
configured with their own IP addresses, so I thought "O.K., I just
need to reference the site with its IP address". However, when I do
that I get a 401 security exception.
It appears that the problem is with having multiple sites using the
same Lists.asmx URL on one box. What is the correct way to configure
this so that my call to the web service knows which site and list I'm
trying to access?

Site dir default behavior
Hi All,
I've created a site directory in WSS 3 that will aggregate all projects.
In it, I've created a new custom Tab.
I want the portal users, that once they click the Project Tab, they will go
to my custom tab, instead of the Category tab. I've changed the sort of the
tabs but still it goes to the Category by default.
Any suggestions?

Email Approval URL for a Form
Being new to Infopath and WSS, I have a senerio that I wanted to see
if these applications could help solve.
I would like to design a form to be filled out be users (users of a
customer of mine) that will request certain types of Web access
(access is filtered with URL filtering applications - like Surf
Control or Websense). The form will require them to state why they
need access to specfic web sites or categories of websites.
Once the form is filled out, an email will be sent to a manager in the
same company that will contain notification that a form was
completed. Along with the email, a URL will be included that the
manager could click on to see the completed form. After viewing the
form, the manager will then either approve or decline the request. If
the manager approves the request, another email will be sent to me or
my company to notify me that an approved form is available for me to
act upon (at which time I would assign appropriate permissions to the
user so that can view the web page(s) in question.
Is this senerio an appropraite use for Infopath and WSS? Most of the
users and managers completing or approving the forms will be using
Macintosh PCs and thus will not have InfoPath available to them.
If this is an appropriate use of Infopath and WSS, could you provide
me a very high level overview of what would be needed to implement
this?

deploy. Not withstanding SQL connection licenses is the app still
freely distributed?
(Usual additions though - cost of server; cost of SQL Server if you use
it; and an Internet Connection license at ca 2K *for the server*) if not
used just for the Intranet.

WSS is not exactly free. You still require a valid license of Windows Server,
a Windows Server CAL for each client and the proper SQL licensing if you use
a full licensed version of SQL on the back end.
For MOSS you need the server license, the CAL and the premium CAL if you
want to use the premium features above and beyond WSS.
