Can someone explain how to use a file server as a backend server for WSS 2003?

Hi all,

I currently have a file server with approx 300 GB of data on it. my
company wants to set up a sharepoint site that users can save docs to,
etc. the problem is if they start doing that, then we will have tons
of duplicate data, as alot of the files are already saved on my file
server. can i set up sharepoint to point to the file son the file
server? and help on this would be awesome.

No because all files are stored in SQL... not a file share.
