I'm new to SharePoint and have a (hopefully) easy question.

Why is there a distinction made between sites and document/meeting
workspaces? It seems like they all have the same available web parts and
functionality, and they all specify new URLs; it seems like they are all new
"sites." Do the differences only lie in the templates?

Thanks,

Robert Zahm

There's more than that.

For instance Document workspaces have the restriction that you can't nest
them because it was seen in the beta to be stupid to create a document
workspace to discuss a document then to create a document workspace below
that to discuss (again!) the same document etc.

You also can't use List templates from one type of site/workspace in another
type of site/workspace.

and so on.

On an abstract level they are of course really all sites as you write but
there's more to it than just the different name. (In the beta the meeting
workspace was actually called meeting workplace ... [trivia])

Mike,
I have many projects that uses document workspaces, and they are
hierarchical. Meaning, I create document workspace called sharepoint, and I
can create a document workspace under sharepoint called windows sharepoint
services, and I can create another document workspace under windows
sharepoint service called development. Is that what you mean I can't do
below?

If you require many people editing the same document at the same time, you
will need document workspace. Team sites don't support this feature. Note
though, this feature is not straight forward to use. Document workspace also
have membership webpart, which I think you should be able to add it into
team site as well... Right Mike?

Maybe they changed it back. Beta-1 had unlimited levels of "create a
Document Workspace then click the document in the document workspace and say
you want to create a document workspace for it <loop>". (which is what I
meant); Beta-2 then restricted that to you being able to do it once. I never
checked on RTM but I've always assumed that was the same as Beta-2.

Kit,

I'm still not exactly clear as to the differences between a site and a
document workspace then. Since they can both contain document libraries and
subsites/workspaces, what is the difference?

Thanks,

Rob

They are almost the same... Except that document workspace supports
collaboration better because it allows many people to edit a same document
simultaneously. Meaning, when two people opens the same document, edit it,
both side can see the changes. However, this feature is not straightforward
to use.
