Hello,

I have a site setup in WSS that was assigned as an IP based site with
a unique IP. I want to point a domain name at it now and have pointed
the domain at the IP but now when I try to bring up the website via
domain I get a page that reads:

The Web site that is referenced here is not in the configuration
database.

Instead of the site. Whereas, if I bring the site up via IP it works
fine.

Anyone have an idea how to resolve this?

Thanks,
Jess

Addresses are the identities of SharePoint sites.....changes in them are
fairly high impact. There are methods of getting into the configuration
database but I would strongly reccommend that you look at migrating the
site. Setup a new Vserver and use host header recognition so it can coexist
with your IP based VServer. Then follow the migration procedures outlined in
the Administrators Guide.

This will provide you with the most supportable results in the long run.

Gregg, thanks for the reply and the help. But this seems like it was a
topic overlooked when WSS was developed.

So there's really no way to point more than one domain at a single
sharepoint site then? That's fine for an internal network but
impractical in a hosted environment. That would mean anyone looking to
host a sharepoint site will need to either point their domain/url at
the server before they develope the site or they are going to get
stuck using some temp url like:

http://user.server.myhostingcompany.com/ or worse yet an ip based
site.

This is a real snafu for commercial hosts looking to offer sharepoint
services.
